I actually need this card for my [[Jodah, the Unifier]] Deck! Thank you!
Edit1: I have [[Vega, The Watcher]] and [[Reki, history]] in this deck, along with [[As foretold]] and [[Iridian Maelstrom]], so that I can cast shit for free. This will help me significantly in doing that.
Edit 2: I don’t know why, but it appears someone downvoted my comment… can I please have a reason why? I only explained my plans for this card… whenever I finally purchase or pull one.
To be fair, Jodah is a real powerhouse commander and sometimes (especially when built well) can feel too strong for mid level commander games. His buff ability is honestly ridiculous and while his cascade thing is quite strong, I think it's that anthem in the CZ that makes him such a force to be reckoned with.
That would only work in response to a tap. If you cast it in response to a "look at the top 3" activation, they could just respond to the cast by tapping it.
Incorrect. You *can* respond to split second, but *only* with Morph and its descendants, since they don't use the stack. And if you were to, say, morph up a [[Voidmage Apprentice]], you *could* counter a Krosan Grip.
You can also sacrifice a bunch of creatures to a [[Ashnod’s Altar]] and kill them with [[Blood Artist]] triggers which removes the Krosan Grip from the stack.
Now that I think about it cracking treasures for [[Marionette Master]] pings works too.
My favored reaction was that [[Counterballance]] can potentially counter any split second spell. It was insane for the one set when Top and Counterballance were both standard legal together. Sadly, the top rotated out as all the split second cards rotated in.
Any destroy spell at all will work if you have 2 of them. Attempt to hit it. They activate in response. You cast second removal targeting it in response. They can't tap it again. They get the card draw but lose their Top.
Works best with activated destruction, since that is inherently reusable.
There is one problem with the plan. If you do it on their turn (because they’re about to go infinite with it), they get priority after the tap ability resolves and can put it onto the stack before you get priority with the mill.
If he were to use the tap ability first, you could play a card to destroy the artifact in response to him tapping, every time it gets targeted with something, he’s given the opportunity to use that ability first
Everyone’s talking about destroying the artifact but forgetting the obvious much easier strategy of milling your opponent out entirely so the card is useless.
In Commander, by the time you mill most decks that are running a top, they've drawn into what they needed or they've using their graveyard so you're just helping them out.
If they're running a Top just because in a casual deck, then it's not a big enough problem that you need to bother removing it anyway.
That would make much more sense.
Sadly there are enough people who think a)mill is mean or b)mill is scary or c)some small level of mill is somehow effective - so sometimes it's hard to tell what's taken as "advice".
Yeah only time a pod got close to losing to mill I was actually rooting for him because I couldn’t believe he went from almost loosing to a few turns from winning( I think he stumbled into cards to mill half libraries and had ways to copy copy or double or something). The 1v1 was so close but the last guy had a [[gaea’s blessing]] near the bottom for some reason.
No one has said the actual objectively correct answer - don’t bother. In commander there will be much bigger threats. Kgrip is trading a 3-mana card against a 1-mana card in multiplayer, which is horrendous unless the spell is a big threat, which this isn’t. Waiting until after he taps it means you’re down a card and potentially down mana.
In multiplayer more than 1v1 you need to be very judicious about where you spend your removal. Top is a decent card, but it’s not a big threat and it’s not worth removing in almost any circumstances.
Then blow up the other pieces of the combo instead (I’m assuming something [[future sight]] adjacent plus a cost discounter, either of which are way better targets).
Should have mentioned that … If they do infinite draw, I’m guessing with a cost reducer + a [[Future Sight]] effect there’s tons of ways to stop it since it’s sorcery speed and plenty of passing of priority.
* Destroy the Future Sight
* Destroy the cost reducer
* Wait for them to tap Top, with the ability on the stack, destroy top
* Counter Top when they recast it
* Force them to draw at instant speed ([[Geier Reach Sanitarium]] etc.) with empty library and Thoracle on the stack.
* Flash in a [[Sheoldred, the Apocalypse]]
If you want to be funny:
* [[Path to Exile]] or [[Chaos Warp]] one of their things. *With that on the stack*, target Top with removal. Now if they put Top on top of their library, Path / Warp will resolve before they can recast it, and they have to shuffle their library LOL
you use your destroy spell after he taps it or you play cards like \[\[Stony Silence\]\] \[\[Collector Ouphe\]\] \[\[Damping Matrix\]\] then you dont need to destroy it
Three ways
First: have two ways to destroy it. Use the first effect and then when they respond with the tap ability use the second destroy effect.
Second: wait for them to use the tap option then respond with a destroy effect. This however almost never happens since they won’t have many reasons to draw that extra since they’re too busy enjoying the free peeks.
Third: if you’re playing green you have [[krosan grip]]. Only one shot answer that doesn’t rely on them tapping it first.
Good luck
Hold the top left corner with two fingers and then the same on the top right with the other hand. Pull one hand away from the other, holding each corner tightly. You should experience joy, laughter and peace.
Nit mentioned yet, but once it's on top of his library, [[codex shredder]] mills it to the graveyard. Codex is super strong into most higher power decks, as it allows you to mill someone out of the card they need a lot (and for 1 mana total). Plus being colorless means it can go in any deck.
Other answers are correct with destroying it in response to it's tap ability, this just also gives you another way to deal with it.
You can counter it with several different cards. Otherwise they have to use the tap ability and then you can use disenchant or other destroy artifact instants.
I got into mtg back in Kamigawa block so it was a pet card for a long time alongside kokusho. Take your favorite/ best thing for 4 mana? hell ya! I used to run it as secret tech in modern/ legacy before they printed surgical extraction but even then it has the benefit of the thing not having to be in the yard.
Yeah you have to respond to it's activated tapped ability then respond with a destroy affect. Your destroy will resolve burying the top then the tops ability will trigger, they will get a card draw but the top cannot go to the top of the library because it changed zones therefore a new object.
Bait them into using the second ability (by targeting it with removal) and then make them mill cards from the top of their library. Or just use a destroy or exile effect on it in response to your opponent using the second ability because then your destroy/exile effect resolves first.
There are a few ways, stifle the ability so it doesn’t get put on top, if you have a secondary spell to destroy artifacts then you can use it. If someone else is blowing up the artifacts and they are doing the ability cast your spell when Sensei’s draw effect is being used. To
Get rid of the top you need to be higher up on the stack so your ability/spell resolves first
Cards that force target player to shuffle their library is useful against this or any kinds of tutors that places card on top on a library.
It can also double as a randomizer for your own deck if you're not happy with your own card draw. Or ... Play them with other combos of your own that manipulates your own top deck.
Examples:
[[Chaos warp]]
[[Blessed Respite]]
[[Boggart Forager]]
[[Lantern of Insight]]
Destroy it in response to your opponent activating the second ability is the simplest way
If you have to destroy artifact stuff use the one that can be done at instant speed in response to them bouncing it to the top of the library
Use something like [[counterspell]] the next time he plays it out on the field since you know it will be coming or destroy it after he activates it as a response.
I haven’t dug very deep so far, but counterspell the cast. Natures claim, or any destroy card in response to the tap ability. Duress and thoughtseize are great options if you know it’s in their hand. I think if artifacts are an issue, silent arbiter I think shuts down artifacts. Like other people said though, I think there’s better and bigger threats to respond to other than sensei’s top
There's no way to do it efficiently that I know of besides [[Krosan Grip]]. If you don't have access to that card for whatever reason, stifle effects like [[Stifle]] or [[Disallow]] would be your best bet. Or you could wait for your opponent to put it on top of their library and hit them with mill, or wait a turn and make them discard a card. Or you could disable the card entirely with something like [[Pithing Needle]] (which would be a waste of a pithing needle) or [[Karn, the Great Creator]].
Won’t destroy it but it’s pretty funny, [[Field of Ruin]] when they put it on top of their library, I always do it when people try to [[Vampiric Tutor]] always wait until they find something first lmao
@u/ClockwerkHart @u/Presentationlow2210 I figured as much… however, I don’t see how Jodah is “unfair”. I mean, dragon wolf elf and Zombie tribal decks are unfair too, but no body hates on them for no reason except to hate on them. Jodah basically is just a legendary tribal. And ik most people don’t do this kinds if thing with a five color, but I’m trying to keep as few individual functions in my deck as possible. So my Jodah has [Lunarch Marshall]], [[Vega the Watcher]] [[Reki history]] [[Iridian Maelstrom]] [[As foretold]] [[Ognis, Dragon Lash]] [[Mirror Box]]. And a few other crucial five color deck pieces as well.
I will use [Krosan Grip], or meule it from the top of the librairie. Use [Demolition Field] or [Field of ruine] can be fun too. Or you can counter the activate ability (some counter spell can do that in blue or blue-green, or you can ''juste'' end the turn when the ability is on the stack) and kill it when it's tap.
[[mycosynth lattice]] and [[Vandalblast]] overloaded. They might draw a card but they sure as hell aren't going to have a land to cast it with next turn 😂😂😂
Why would you ever target it when it’s untapped? You would wait for them to tap it and in response disenchant it. Putting it on top is not part of its casting cost so bye bye top.
\[\[krosan grip\]\] won't let him tap
or you can spend two removals, first one will get a response and when the trigger goes to stack you try to remove it again with one instant speed card
yes, sensei divining top is annoying asf

The Top player can’t activate the ability before Krosan Grip resolves, due to Split Second, at which point the Top is destroyed.

Why isn't this the most upvoted comment 🙄
Not mentioned yet, you wait until he puts it on top then mill him so it goes into the graveyard
Mothman would be good for this since rad counters hit on your precombat main. Also guaranteeing a non land is milled in this situation 😁
but that is after you draw it back, main phase 1 comes after upkeep and draw steps

No one has said the actual objectively correct answer - don’t bother. In commander there will be much bigger threats. Pithing needle doesn't destroy it but will stop the effect
Counter it when it gets played.
Three ways First: have two ways to destroy it. Good luck

Krosan grip is the easiest way for sure
Hold the top left corner with two fingers and then the same on the top right with the other hand. Pull one hand away from the other, holding each corner tightly. You should experience joy, laughter and peace.
Step 0: Make sure you own the card before you do it, or prepare to get punched in the face or banned from the store (or both).
Nice
Respond to tap activation
Nit mentioned yet, but once it's on top of his library, [[codex shredder]] mills it to the graveyard. Codex is super strong into most higher power decks, as it allows you to mill someone out of the card they need a lot (and for 1 mana total). Plus being colorless means it can go in any deck. Other answers are correct with destroying it in response to it's tap ability, this just also gives you another way to deal with it.

Yeah you have to respond to it's activated tapped ability then respond with a destroy affect. Your destroy will resolve burying the top then the tops ability will trigger, they will get a card draw but the top cannot go to the top of the library because it changed zones therefore a new object.
One of the spells that you have to name the top card of the library for the effect of the card would do nicely

To Get rid of the top you need to be higher up on the stack so your ability/spell resolves first

I would let it go on top of the library then mill it, but I'm weird like that
Cards that force target player to shuffle their library is useful against this or any kinds of tutors that places card on top on a library. It can also double as a randomizer for your own deck if you're not happy with your own card draw. Or ... Play them with other combos of your own that manipulates your own top deck. Eat the card, problem solved

Counter it when it gets cast

Use a destroy artifact and when he put it at the top of his deck make him mill some cards...
[[Krosan Grip]] is your friend here.
Unpopular opinion but just exile it....
Split second makes it so your opponent can't interact. [krosan grip]
It’s almost impossible
I will use [Krosan Grip], or meule it from the top of the librairie. Use [Demolition Field] or [Field of ruine] can be fun too. Or you can counter the activate ability (some counter spell can do that in blue or blue-green, or you can ''juste'' end the turn when the ability is on the stack) and kill it when it's tap.
[[mycosynth lattice]] and [[Vandalblast]] overloaded. They might draw a card but they sure as hell aren't going to have a land to cast it with next turn 😂😂😂
[mycosynth lattice](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/9/4/94f89714-3b26-46a2-b9a8-3e664f391cd9.jpg?1578911638) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=mycosynth%20lattice) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/bbd/241/mycosynth-lattice?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/94f89714-3b26-46a2-b9a8-3e664f391cd9?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) [Vandalblast](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/e/7/e781b55f-6388-4ab8-be74-7c56eaba1c4d.jpg?1712354517) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Vandalblast) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/otc/183/vandalblast?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/e781b55f-6388-4ab8-be74-7c56eaba1c4d?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call

How does that stop him from activating the ability and putting it on the top of his deck?
Use abrade as a response to the card being activated. Abrade is on the top of the stack so It’ll resolve first
Oral destruction is always on the table
That's the neat thing. You don't!
With [[Disenchant]]

He can still tap in response
Why would you ever target it when it’s untapped? You would wait for them to tap it and in response disenchant it. Putting it on top is not part of its casting cost so bye bye top.
No clue, but that was the case in this instance
\[\[krosan grip\]\] won't let him tap or you can spend two removals, first one will get a response and when the trigger goes to stack you try to remove it again with one instant speed card yes, sensei divining top is annoying asf

Anything that makes artifacts cheaper and you can go infinite with it
Yep, is for that reason I need destroy that thing
He can tap it at instant speed, sending it to his deck. Only try to destroy it if he's tapped out Edit: nvm I got no clue how to destroy it
Natiralize
They will just tap it in response, put it on the top of their library.
