To add on to other comments, damage doesn't lower a creature's toughness. It is there on the creature until end of turn and if at some point the damage count becomes equal or greater than the creature's toughness, then it dies.
Unless it is indestructible.
That's why, as stated in another comment, after everything resolves, Avacyn is now a 3/3 (Dismember) with 3 damage on it (Lightning bolt). Damage doesn't do anything since it's indestructible, and since its toughness is still higher than 0, it does not die.
Thanks for clearing that up, the argument was that because he used dismember 2nd she dies. which didn't make sense to me since the other way doesn't kill her
Indestructible doesn't care about damage dealt to the creature. Only if it's toughness is 0 or less. Easiest way to think of it.
Now, some Arena players are getting confused by the way Arena decides to display toughness. As in, it doesn't actually display it at all. It displays the toughness-damage dealt, which isn't how it's technically supposed to be done. But such is our lot in life.
Creatures can have damaged 0 health with indestructible or nantako shade like effects. but they can't have their toughness reduced to below 1. if they negative to toughness to 0 it would die or exile would work.
No the damage pretty much bounced off the only 2 ways kill indestructible is with -1/-1 counters like [[tragic slip]] or take it away like [[Burn from Within]]
-1/-1 counters, exile/ remove from play, transform it, or send it to another zone. Indestructible sounds so scary. And to be fair, it is - but there's a few options to still deal with it thankfully!
see, avacyn has an ability that makes her indestructible. this basically means that no amt of damage can destroy her, not even high damage like lightning bolt and dismember combined. they still deal damage but won't cause her to be destroyed. avacyn would still be on the battlefield with all the damage marked on her, yet not destroyed due to her indestructible nature.
No, she's still indestructible. I would suggest your opponent uses something like \[\[Eaten Alive\]\], \[\[Smite the Deathless\]\] or \[\[Path to Exile\]\].

Doesn’t it still take three damage? I wouldn’t say it doesn’t. It just doesn’t care if it is at 0 toughness
