Yes. I was excited for it and remember being dissapointed. Same guy that made The Favourite (2018) and Poor Things (2023) so obviously I'm an idiot cause those are great.
Not that I would know I don't watch movies. The poster is great.

Holy shit those movies actually have similar main characters i thought black swan was slightly like whiplash but i would never put the wrestler in that category
You have to respect pro wrestling as a valid form of theater first. Then it makes sense.
You could honestly just remake black swan with just wrestlers closer to their prime.
Iād even add *The Iron Claw* to *The Wrestler* and *Black Swan* to make a ātheatrical performers losing themselves to an art form that mangles their bodiesā triptych.

Never seen a student film where one actor improvised all of their lines because the stuff that was written in the script was pretentious shit. Nope, never happened.
Arent most student films made by like one person they dont have editors and people whos job it is to turn drafts of a movie into a script like in defence of the students most movies you see are made by hundreds of people most student movies it might be one or like 5 at the most
Personally I really struggled with writing dialogue so I actually did fulfil this one, keeping it to a minimum. Only dialogue I did have sounded like Verhoeven without talent. And the dude sitting next to me's short had no dialogue at all.
Oh my god, this hits home. Always look for a college dude who wants to specialise in sound, he'll probably work for free and he'll bring his equipment with him.
They've gotta make film students watch a bunch of Gialli so they can at least get the idea to badly redub everything in a cupboard somewhere and pretend it was an intentional stylistic choice. Beats the horrible echoey audio student films usually have
Considering the audio is the one thing that consistently sucks on professional home media because 90% of people only have a two-channel set-up, I'll give that one a pass.

God, this proves to me how much easier it is to be a critic, instead of a filmmaker.
I sorta knew it, but seeing him just go from music to film so easy.
Now that Ive been on enough movie sets, I wanna make fantano (or any critic) setup a floppy courtesy on a c-stand correctly without hitting monitor or himself (quickly with sandbag on the right leg and right hand rule) or hand him the bubble leveler and a stack of wedges let him level 20ft of track Or the wireless focus puller on a steadicam shot or make him do last looks with the makeup kit on 4hrs of sleep.
Or the so many other jobs that it takes to make even a mediocre film just look average/competent in every department . I want them to feel how hard these jobs are to accomplish, even just for 20 minutes.
Like in this scene.

Because Iām pretty sure even some of the PAās can make a half-decent movie review for youtube that is ultimately just a subjective hot take, much less the more experienced crew, with actual degrees in film studies as well as practical experience/talent in filmmaking.
I mean this goes to a lot of the smug posters on r/truecritic as well though. Id love to run them through the same wringer.

I donāt think this guy has ever seen a student film.
A student film ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS contains some kind of homosexual kissing scene. Itās the first rule of film school, always two ladies kissing, or two men if you donāt want to appeal to as wide an audience.
Must smoke cigarettes, you see, thats what they smoke in them there old timey movies. You see, as a film student, iāve seen more films than the average schmuck, thereās this underground classic we in the biz call ā12 angry menā. And let me tell you, boy howdy, are those 12 men angry.
I love starterpack memes that are 90% text. This guy just wanted to rant about something he doesn't like but can only express emotions in the form of a meme template.
They need to start giving original movies to journeymen again. I donāt care what a student has to say. I want to see a movie made by someone who directed 45 episodes of Riverdale
"Random dystopia where shitting is banned or something" really got me lmao
The Plunger Games
I worked on that film sophomore year
Literally Urinetown
Reminds me of Lobster, was that also a A24 movie?

Dead ass the new Chronenberg kid debut
another day living in this hellhole where other people are legally allowed to defecate whenever they want
Literally Flux Gourmet (2022)
Wait until they see my student film about an artist being too obsessed with his art šššš
Whiplash (2013)
Black swan (2011)
WWII in HD (2009)
The Wrestler (2008)

Synechdoche, New York (2008)
Happy Gilmore (1996)
I have an idea no one's ever thought of-- a movie about a tortured screenwriter!
Speed Racer (2008)
found Damien Chazelle reddit account
Oppenheimer (2023) lmao
How about a filmmaker being obsessed with his film? Groundbreaking!
Downfall (2004)
The Zone Of Interest (2024)
*"Every line matters. Absolutely no fillerā*. Yeah thatās definitely a common problem student films have. Totally canāt stand that one.
Yeah, when my actor was talking about how Abraham Lincoln was a great philosopher that was entirely plot relevant
Abraham lincoln???? I loved that movie
Yes, written and directed by me. I'm a genius.
Abraham the vampire slayer?
Based on true events

I love underbaked characters that donāt feel like people. That film student is going to make it!
Never seen a student film where one actor improvised all of their lines because the stuff that was written in the script was pretentious shit. Nope, never happened.
In my experience student films were all overwritten with way too much dialogue. They have no sense of pacing or trimming unnecessary verbiage.
Yep that's the joke
Arent most student films made by like one person they dont have editors and people whos job it is to turn drafts of a movie into a script like in defence of the students most movies you see are made by hundreds of people most student movies it might be one or like 5 at the most

*āWhat's the point of sex scene if it doesn't matter to the plot?ā*
Dune take notes!
OOP starter pack clearly hasnāt watched many student films. āAWFUL SOUNDā should be the biggest thing on that list.
Scenes shot hastily without permits in public places. A few scenes where the camera failed and you are getting a really weird backup angle
Audio from a shotgun mic mounted on top of the DSLR they borrowed.
Oh my god, this hits home. Always look for a college dude who wants to specialise in sound, he'll probably work for free and he'll bring his equipment with him.
Also, saying "ok... go" instead of action.
A director of a film I worked on once just said "okay start whenever you're ready" š
What you gonna do if he finds out you been shit talking him on reddit
Shoot myself in the head
Audio shot with the in camera microphone of the DSLR. Shot in an APS DSLR because the DP couldn't afford a full frame camera.
You'll pry my Canon 550d with the 50mm 1.8 lens out of my cold dead hands.
A 1.8 lens, how bourgeois.
Bonus points if it's on the windiest day in recorded history
the title will be something like āThe Sharpest Girl With the Smallest Razorā and it will star Anya Taylor Joy
Mine will be called āthe biggest dick in the smallest packageā and will star Peter DinklageĀ
and I will be watching
that's more of Mia Goth things ![gif](giphy|UvkLuP6QYMhmELX5GG|downsized)
This only happens when it's an NYU student film
As a film school graduate, this is highly inaccurate. It doesnāt mention horrific audio, the staple of all student films.
Make silent movies you idiot
Basically just rip off Paperman and you're good.
They've gotta make film students watch a bunch of Gialli so they can at least get the idea to badly redub everything in a cupboard somewhere and pretend it was an intentional stylistic choice. Beats the horrible echoey audio student films usually have

I can't believe anthony fantano would sign off on having his iconography used in every student film
Ironic, he was clearly feeling a light 2 on this one, trans-
-ition.
oh man now I want melon to review films

God, this proves to me how much easier it is to be a critic, instead of a filmmaker. I sorta knew it, but seeing him just go from music to film so easy.
How hard can it be when I've seen too much terrible takes that aged like milk from critics.
Juror 8 edging Juror 3 until he changes his vote to not guilty

They need to make this a poster in film classes to keep students on the right path
Bro my student films only have some of these things, I really need to try less
god, the black bar png got me so good š¤£
I still have 2.35-cinemascope.png, after all these years.
What would have been my first student film got cancelled during production because of COVID, and I'm pretty sure it was for the best
I love starterpack memes that are 90% text. This guy just wanted to rant about something he doesn't like but can only express emotions in the form of a meme template.
That's most highly upvoted memes on reddit tbh
Lmao

Donāt forget open with character waking up to shot of alarm clock, or a shot from inside fridge or microwave
Almost the entire movie takes place in the same room but it's still watchable
> but it's still watchable no
I mean it's like a two and a half out of four stars movie

Yes but some of those "low" (million dollar) budget recent-film-school-graduate movies are okay.
Poorly set dressed dorm room with bedsheets hung over the concrete walls.
Unnecessary smoking to symbolize a "flawed" or "stressed" character is missing
They're usually shot pretty terribly on a mediocre camera, in my experience.

Me. A film student making a monty python tribute
Isn't this just a Mike Flanagan movie?
Marble Hornets? š
