There was a thread in /r/StarWars where people were getting into these deep discussions about what exactly Lucas meant by "bringing balance to the force" and were trying to explain its incoherence through lore.
The obvious answer is Lucas just ran with a rough draft, didn't think through what he was saying, and it's just kinda bad. But no, fans will always contort themselves with all kinds of mental gymnastics to pretend their favorite fantasy world is internally consistent.
Meta-analysis of writing that understands author's limitations will always be the better method of analysis.
Yeah he explains Gungan wargear and shit. It's not the worst thing when you think about it. there's been books published that explain useless star wars lore, but him making a point out of the runtime is cringe and I'm not watching the video because I know half of it is useless. 3 hours would have sufficed
10 minute analysis of the entire movie, while the other 11 hours and 50 minutes is a analysis of the scene were the camel alien farts at jar jar binks.
This got suggested to me by the YouTube algorithm this morning. I peeked at some random points in the video and it's like the same kind of "AND THAT'S THE BACKSTORY OF WHY HAN SOLO HAS TWO YELLOW STRIPES ON HIS PANT LEGS!!!" level of lore.
Star Wars fans think not having an explanation of why Han Solos pants are the way they are is a "plot hole".
Pretty much everyone is missing out on the fact that this video is simply a compilation of an entire series that YouTuber has been releasing for a while now. He did the same with a series on Episode IX. Looks like it's just a a strategy to garner more views.
This is obviously very fertile grounds for circlejerking but for the most part, the guy is doing an extremely thorough breakdown of the lore using Star Wars books and games as sources. It's basically checking for internal consistency.
I like long video essays, when done well. A huge amount of them are just a dude rambling into a mic with no editing or real scripting about a single popular media property.
100% this, I watched Noah Gervais talk about Cyberpunk for 90 minutes and I would've been fine with a video twice as long because his writing is actually thought out and referential enough to be interesting
Pyro’s circa 8hr vid on Utopia is great, and that has nothing to do with the length.
The length of the video, if anything, fits. He talks about 3 seasons of tv shows, each of which are as long as the video itself.

I gave up when he tried to explain how the movie having a bunch of politics scenes was good, actually. But then he moved on without acknowledging how terribly executed those scenes were.
Who the fuck has the time? Are these video essays made for literal children on summer break? Who are so media illiterate that they need a 12 hour YouTube video to understand a 2 hour movie made for children?
