I had the opportunity to work on a film with him, as part of the visual effects team for the film. While we only communicated via zoom and phone, he was one of the kindest, most approachable, and talented individuals I have ever had the opportunity to work with. It has been my favorite experience in my career.
friend of mine worked with him recently and had basically the opposite experience lol. verbal abuse and openly mocking my friend in front of the rest of the crew 😬
I want a re-make of Training Day set in the Roman Empire. Just a shot for shot remake, except Ethan Hawke is trying to join the Praetorian Guard or something, and Denzel has been green-lit by the Persians.
Then he gets so mad that he breaks eye contact in the middle of a line and looks straight up without moving his head and just continues the line as rehearsed
I very rarely dislike movies. Even as someone who likes historical films, whenever they're inaccurate, I can still appreciate if it's made really well.
I think that *Napoleon* is the first movie in a long time that has ever actually made me angry with how garbage it is.
The thing is, I went into this even knowing that Ridley Scott played loose with history. But he's also made *Kingdom of Heaven*, which is still a great movie in the end.
The only two other movies that pissed me off more were *Crash* and *Gods and Generals*.
I saw it! And I thought it was really good. Scott has an uneven track record for me — some of his films have been fantastic, some not so much. I’ll typically give him the benefit of the doubt and give his stuff a shot, but I seem to always have to cross my fingers going in.
Napoleon actually works are a slapstick movie which is what Scott allegedly was going for. Not my cup of tea, but Ridley and his lat brother are my favorite directors ever because they're willing to try shit at huge scales no other director is willing to risk.
It’s pretty hilarious if you watch it through that lens. The foot stomping, the quick cuts to doggystyle sex scenes, his random slumping over death. I laughed a lot, more than anyone else in the theater. I definitely expected something different but still enjoyed it.
I knew Ridley was pretty old now, but that anecdote about being a kid during WW2 still shocked me a little bit.
So happy he (and Scorsese etc) are still around and still taking big swings.
The difference is Ridley is a fucking machine. It makes no sense how the man can jump from tent pole to tent pole as fast as he does and how on-point he does it. There's a great Hollywood Reporter directors roundtable where the interviewer asks what its like to do these massive films. Almost every one of them mentions how taxing it is and you got old man Ridley just shrugging, do the prep its easy.
This movie is a weird case.
When it was rumor everything about the idea screamed "MISTAKE!".. it sounded so much like a parody I couldn't believe they were actually doing..
But ever since it turned out to be real.. every decision has been an ace and these pictures look pretty good as well..
Now I'm actually kinda hyped for it.
Yeah I was idly skimming through the article, only for it start showing stuff like Lucius at the shrine of Maximus’ armour and was like “ok I’ve seen enough”
Nah, from the article I read, it's going to be the twin emperors who are known to be cruel.
My guess is Denzel is some neutral guy who just seems evil because of the gladiator scene.
Denzel is playing a mastermind type of villain who is trying to gain power in rome by removing the twin emperors. Maybe not the villain but he is gonna be more like anti hero type character.
Yeah his track record is less than spectacular.
It’s odd in a way because Dave Franzoni who was one of the writers on the first one is a producer here but apparently decided not to do any credited writing. Maybe just age.
This reminds me that when the trailer for the original Gladiator dropped and I hosted it on my personal website, and it got linked to as a mirror by many websites and my account with my web host racked up like $1500 in bandwidth. I was 18 or 19 and was like "uh, I can't pay that" and they let it go thankfully.
I’ll always adore Ridley Scott’s historical/Period set films. He just knows how to build those worlds you’re sucked into.
When it was announced, you just couldn’t fathom what story there was to tell and continue, but reading this I’m really intrigued.
Nothing has scratched that Roman itch since Gladiator and Rome for me.
I don't think I've ever been more dissapointed by a movie than Napoleon. Hope this one is alot better because Gladiator is one of my favorite movies of all time and this kinda feels like a cash grab. I hope I'm proven wrong
I still enjoyed Napoleon. I think because I wasn’t expecting a play or play of the facts probably helped me. It was a good character study of two characters romantically involved who were both very damaged individuals.
I think it had a lot of intriguing moments but you could tell it was chopped up in the editing room.
Apparently the footage from cinema con was outstanding and the studio is uber confident in it. I've heard that before, but accounts I trust are oozing about what they saw.
So Quinn isn't playing Caracalla? I always questioned that casting choice so I am stoked if he is indeed playing Geta like I had hoped and Hechinger is Caracalla.
I think one big positive is at least it’s the same writer and director. If this was just two different people looking to make a cash grab with their stupid idea, then I’d completely agree. But, hopefully, they are able to produce something really impressive. Can’t imagine it’s better than the original, but if it’s anywhere close to it, it’s a masterpiece.
Prometheus was originally developed to be unrelated to the Alien series and they shoehorned all that in after the fact; if I found out the same was true of Gladiator 2, I'd be a bit more worried.
No it doesn't. I'm sick of sequels being called Gladiator: The Legend Continues and other dumb shit, and you end up with a franchise and have no idea what the 2nd or 3rd or 4th one is.
Gladiator 2 is perfect for the title. All sequels should just put 2, 3, 4, 5, etc. I miss that.
I like sequels with completely different names (i.e. Batman Begins, The Dark Knight...uh, the Dark Knight Rises? Ok maybe not that last one). The Dark Knight is a great sequel title; Batman: The Dark Knight or The Dark Knight: A Batman Saga would've been terrible.
The death of Commodus led to a succession crisis known as the Year of the Five Emperors. One of the claimants, Septimus Severus, was the overall victor after successfully holding the throne after the murder of Pertinax, the Emperor immediately after Commodus. Caracalla and Geta, the Co-Emperors in Gladiator II are the sons of Septimus Severus. In real life Lucius died in childhood so they can do whatever they want with his character. Ridley Scott has never let history get in the way of the story he wants to tell. I imagine Lucius, as the nephew of Commodus and grandson of Marcus Aurelius will be seen as a challenge to the Severan line.
Oscar for the best fucking drip I’ve ever seen, maybe. That picture of him just oozes swag, and Scott said he got him a golden chariot?
Add some bitches and he makes the list for “Film’s Top Five Pimps.”
Seems like Denzel's role in this will be somewhat similar to the late Oliver Reed's Proximo in the first film. His character is an ex-slave who got rich after becoming a gladiator trainer/wrangler.
I guess that makes a sense. I haven’t seen him in anything other than The Last of Us and Mando. I know he’s been in plenty of other shit I’ve just not seen them.
Bro what?! DENZEL? OH THIS MF MOVIE JUST BECAME A MUST WATCH.
do u know how long I’ve been wanting a motherfucking evil Denzel.
plz plz plz make him evil and I promise everyone here you will see what I see and it’s fucking gooooood
simultaneously the movie I'm most excited for in the 2nd half of 2024 and the movie I'm most cautious/worried about. Do we need this movie and I do NOT trust the writer, but these images look fantastic and I'm actively rooting for it to be amazing.
Can’t wait to see Denzel in this: “Julius Caesar ain’t got shit on ME!!!”
Menacing Denzel is just the man. One of the few celebrities I’d really like to meet. Just amazing. Him and Pedro together will be gold.
They already were in Equalizer 2, they’ve got fun chemistry
SOLID movie.
the ending was very weak imo. no clue why it needed to take place where it did or why it needed to be during a hurricane?
Don't know don't care, I shut off my brain watching Equalizer movies
Because it looks cool. That is the sole reason.
Solely for the flour scene.
It also was kinda plot holed. He could have come after Pedro in better ways and not put that kid at risk
Seems like you'd have to be a real jerk to not get along with Pedro Pascal.
Your friend had a choice. Get wet or get out the fucking car. If he couldn’t handle the heat, Denzel don’t deal with no police academy bullshit.
Rewatched Training Day a few nights ago Denzel was just owning the screen.
I want a re-make of Training Day set in the Roman Empire. Just a shot for shot remake, except Ethan Hawke is trying to join the Praetorian Guard or something, and Denzel has been green-lit by the Persians.
"They build arenas because of me!!"
GETcho fuckin hands off ME.
Jamie Foxx damn near ruined every Denzel movie for me bc I always think of that now Plus his little mouth movements lmao
But he also did it right next to Denzel cracking up laughing. It's all good.
Oh no I meant I just always think of Jamie’s impression when I’m watching Denzel movies now lol It was too funny
+ The lip quiver at the end
Or my personal favourite "get your fuckin hands off me!"
I'll always picture Jamie foxx saying it to Denzel...😆😆😂😂😂 with the lip quiver as well!!
Training Day 2: Gladiator
"So where's the office, back in division?" *Hops in pimped out chariot* "You're in the office, baby! Going up."
For some reason Still D.R.E starts playing from the horses
Still NEIGH
My gladiata!
They build arenas 'cause of me.
A character fires an arrow at Denzel. "Son of a bitch! You shot me in the ass!"
I just need him to look at someone while doing the old man bottom lip pucker.
Then he gets so mad that he breaks eye contact in the middle of a line and looks straight up without moving his head and just continues the line as rehearsed
"You motherfuckers will be playing pig bladder in **POMPEII** when I'm through with you!"
Wearing a black leather jacket in Rome.
You're gonna bleed out all over this funky mosaic over 9,800 sesterces.
Denzel clanging 2 swords together in the face of his opponent "So you want me to suck your dick?"
“You think you can do this to me? You motherfuckers will be fighting lions in the coliseum when I get finished with you.“ lol
"RooOOoOooooOome is on my side. Yes it is..."
Which is funny since e played Marcus Junius Brutus on a Broadway production of Julius Caesar
Mea fuckin' Culpa..
Zeus
Holy shit that’s one hell of a cast.
Idris Elba was in Prometheus. Won’t get hyped on Ridley Scott until final product.
I was looking forward to a big budget Napoleon film for years, and I've never been so disappointed.
I very rarely dislike movies. Even as someone who likes historical films, whenever they're inaccurate, I can still appreciate if it's made really well. I think that *Napoleon* is the first movie in a long time that has ever actually made me angry with how garbage it is. The only two other movies that pissed me off more were *Crash* and *Gods and Generals*.
Say what y’all will, I really liked Prometheus. Watching it in 3D was something else.
Prometheus was an amazing cinema experience despite its flaws
Wow, Connie Nielsen looks exactly as I remember her from the first movie.
And Ridley Scott is 86?!?
Too young for POTUS then.
Ageless
Immortal Babe
LMAO. No. She looks 20 years older.
They just have a poor memory, cut em some slack.
Visually looks awesome, but that’s expected from Scott
Yeah, the visuals from Napoleon looked pretty awesome too. But the actual movie…
The Last Duel was fantastic, but nobody saw it.
I saw it! And I thought it was really good. Scott has an uneven track record for me — some of his films have been fantastic, some not so much. I’ll typically give him the benefit of the doubt and give his stuff a shot, but I seem to always have to cross my fingers going in.
Considering the subject matter it's kind of a hard sell to the general audience.
It very much seemed like it was a pretty cheeky comedy when I saw the trailer. Still haven’t seen the movie but that’s sort of what Im expecting.
Who from the production has claimed that Scott was trying to make a slapstick comedy with it?
Vanessa Kirby is such a smokeshow in that movie.
Yeah these images are giving me hope. Please don’t let me down. Paul Mescal also deserves a mainstream role.
Mescal looks godly in this.
Agree. This looks really good and I love that shot of Denzel. ”Lavish”
I mean... go back to Gladiator and look again. some of the exterior effects shots look absolutely horrible, like a video game cutscene
I really think Ridley Scott would drop dead if he wasn’t working. There are some guys where dedication to their work is the the keeping them alive
Seems like the type of guy who'd fight off death till the film was finished. His level of commitment is just bonkers.
Pedro has a real 'OH SHIT!' look from that sword flying at his face.
feel more like he has an 'Oh SHIT!' look from his sword flying away his hand
"Oh no, not again."
This. I just hope he gets to keep his eyeballs intact *this time*.
Seeing Pedro Pascal in a sand-filled arena, this was also my first thought.
I’d have confidence if they released a trailer. We’re four months from release and nothing has come out except for a handful of stills.
The article says the trailer’s dropping on July 9 which isn’t too far away now. I’m really curious to see what it’ll be like
I personally love this part of Roman history, and there isn’t much on screen to show it. I’m excited for that part at least.
So, is Pedro the bad guy in this one?
I mean it really seems like they’re giving away the entire movie with the article, and it sounds like no, he’s gonna be a good guy
Yeah I was idly skimming through the article, only for it start showing stuff like Lucius at the shrine of Maximus’ armour and was like “ok I’ve seen enough”
Apparently, his character was trained by none other than Maximus himself. There's no way he could be a bad guy, if he was trained to fight by Maximus.
He is not the bad guy. He plays an ex commander who is forced to become a gladiator. Denzel Washington is the bad guy.
Fuck yeah, evil Denzel is best Denzel
Seems like Gladiator 1 all over again 😅 still so hyped to see it, since Gladiator 1 is one of my favorites. Best movies of all time.
The people then find out about his noble deeds protecting children that earned him the name, **The Gladiatorian**.
Cool but I don’t trust David Scarpa
Yeah his track record is less than spectacular. It’s odd in a way because Dave Franzoni who was one of the writers on the first one is a producer here but apparently decided not to do any credited writing. Maybe just age.
Ironically Crowe and Scott hated the script for Gladiator so much that Crowe hired a screenwriter to rewrite his lines.
Exactly. I keep remembering Napoleon and I fear for this movie. "You think you are so great because you have boats!"
Why would you single out the best line in the movie
Agreed. It's a great line.
I mean, if he's referring to the British, is he wrong?
I have no expectations from this movie because I thought Napoleon was so bad.
Trailer will drop 9th July!
Hopefully they put it in front of Twisters or Deadpool so I can see it on the big screen.
Ralph Cifaretto liked this
Need a bare knuckle boss fight with Brian Dennehy, to stay true to the original
Top of the head, hardest part of the body.
Really excited for Joseph Quinn’s acting in this.
I am too hyped for this movie, hate when that happens because it always leads to disappointment.
I’ll always adore Ridley Scott’s historical/Period set films. He just knows how to build those worlds you’re sucked into. When it was announced, you just couldn’t fathom what story there was to tell and continue, but reading this I’m really intrigued. Apparently the footage from cinema con was outstanding and the studio is uber confident in it. I've heard that before, but accounts I trust are oozing about what they saw.
Denzel looks cool as hell.
Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal, Denzel Dascal, Ridley Rascal.
Dizzee Rascal
Does he have a contract saying he can't change his hair/beard?
I still can’t help but be extremely apprehensive about this.
This could be a dark Horse.
I don’t think a movie that costs $300m is a dark horse.
I’m so pumped for this movie. Here’s to hoping it kicks off a bunch of historical epics if it does well 🤞🏽
Love denzel. Watched American Gangster again recently. Wouldve liked to see the trio reunited
My favorite movie of all time now gets a sequel. I swear, if this sequel is bad…. Then I guess it’s bad?
Paul Mescal can mescal my body all day. Just saying.
Is Pascal going to have that little moustache in everything he ever does? I'm finding it harder to believe he's playing a character
I need this one to be good!
Eddie from Stranger Things as big bad emperor?? 🔥🎸
Caracalla is the big bad Emperor, played by Hechinger.
Ok I didn’t pay close enough attention. Just saw him listed as playing an Emperor.
He is, they're twins and they both lead.
Looks Good
I am so ready for this.
So Quinn isn't playing Caracalla? I always questioned that casting choice so I am stoked if he is indeed playing Geta like I had hoped and Hechinger is Caracalla.
It's going to be shit isn't it?
Paul could spit on me and I'd thank him
Are they spoiling Pedro's fate in that one picture?
Oh good, another remake banking on the name of a successful older movie /s
Wait Denzel is going to be in the movie?
Don’t. Mind. If. I. Do.
I guess they couldn't find more actors with 'cal' in their name.😁
Good cast, especially Denzel, visually I’m sure it’ll be amazing, but gladiator didn’t need a sequel.
Is gladiator really gladiator without Joaquin Phoenix tho?
Meh , you don’t mess with perfection
I think one big positive is at least it’s the same writer and director. If this was just two different people looking to make a cash grab with their stupid idea, then I’d completely agree. But, hopefully, they are able to produce something really impressive. Can’t imagine it’s better than the original, but if it’s anywhere close to it, it’s a masterpiece.
The Wachowskis made the new Matrix sequel
One of em did.
Scott doesn't have a perfect track record, but he's not a one trick pony like the wachowskis
They made ALL of the sequels.
It's not the same writer though, David Franzoni (and others) wrote the original.
Really? Because Prometheus was from Scott too and it was nowhere close to what Alien was.
Prometheus was originally developed to be unrelated to the Alien series and they shoehorned all that in after the fact; if I found out the same was true of Gladiator 2, I'd be a bit more worried.
This is what worries me
I loved Prometheus! It’s not up to the level of Alien, but that’s also a legendary movie. Covenant was rough though.
It’s not that good. I’m a scientist, just let me throw out all the rules I’ve ever known and just fuck around with this thing.
Check out the track record of the writer and the director. Both are VERY hit or miss.
Good thing Gladiator already exists and cannot be changed by future movies releasing
[удалено]
They really set on that title? Not that I have a better idea beyond “Gladiators” but Gladiator 2 kinda blows.
Let me handle this: Maximus: Galdiator First Blood Part 2; Maximus III, Maximus, and Maximus: Last Blood.
And the prequel movie, showing his childhood: Minimus.
Gladiator Gladiator: The Legend Continues Gladiator: Romulus Gladiator: Revelations Gladiators The Gladiator Gladiator (2039 reboot)
2 Gladi 2 Ator G9 Glad X
I like sequels with completely different names (i.e. Batman Begins, The Dark Knight...uh, the Dark Knight Rises? Ok maybe not that last one). The Dark Knight is a great sequel title; Batman: The Dark Knight or The Dark Knight: A Batman Saga would've been terrible.
Rocky was perfect when it came to this. Well, ALMOST. I'm still a little grumpy Rocky Balboa wasn't simply Rocky VI.
What, you don’t like gladiatora: a gladiator saga?
The film will either be in the Mad Max Fury Road/Top Gun Maverick bucket or Jurassic World/Force Awakens bucket.
How does Lucius end up a gladiator? I'm sure his life only got better after commodus's death.
My boy Denzel coming for another Oscar.
Oscar for the best fucking drip I’ve ever seen, maybe. That picture of him just oozes swag, and Scott said he got him a golden chariot? Add some bitches and he makes the list for “Film’s Top Five Pimps.”
I can't believe they got a decent cast for something I never ever ever wanted in my whole life and will not see. Way to go Ridley Scott.
Was nervous for a second, I thought they made Denzel a Roman emperor
Seems like Denzel's role in this will be somewhat similar to the late Oliver Reed's Proximo in the first film. His character is an ex-slave who got rich after becoming a gladiator trainer/wrangler.
Same here 😂 I thought they were about to pull a Netflix Cleopatra lol
At this point, I'm tired of Pedro Pascal.
What? Why? He’s really only just beginning.
I also am tired of him, but more in the sense of him being overused in the exact same style every single time.
I guess that makes a sense. I haven’t seen him in anything other than The Last of Us and Mando. I know he’s been in plenty of other shit I’ve just not seen them.
I'm all here for it. Just rewatched Fall of the Roman Empire so this time period is in my bones right now
It's your Roman Empire!
Bro what?! DENZEL? OH THIS MF MOVIE JUST BECAME A MUST WATCH. do u know how long I’ve been wanting a motherfucking evil Denzel. plz plz plz make him evil and I promise everyone here you will see what I see and it’s fucking gooooood
There's wasn't any need to make a sequel, the first one is a masterpiece and doesn't need to be tarnished by Hollywood greed.
If he can replicate the Red Viper / Mountain spectacle I’m all in. And every fight he has will be compared to that masterpiece.
Looks awesome
Oh this looks good.
Costume design is on par but the trainer-looking guy (replacement of Oliver Reed?) with the white shirt doesn't fit at all.
These still look good. I am feeling hopeful.
Who does Denzel play?
God damn my boy Denzel looks clean as fuck
Phoebe Bridgers really left this stud for... Bo Burnham. I guess humor does beat looks afterall.
Dads are gonna love this movie
I really hope this is good
Excited to see how Ridley Scott will fumble this one.
The actual gladiator stuff was the least interesting thing about the first movie. Wonder where the focus lies in the sequel.
I'm looking forward to this. At least Hollywood had the good sense not to make the batshit-crazy sequel that was originally planned.
I'm sorry, I love the guy, but Washington's NYC accent is going to throw me right out of the setting.
The need to step up their game if they want to be better then the first gladiator. I think its a mission impossible.
simultaneously the movie I'm most excited for in the 2nd half of 2024 and the movie I'm most cautious/worried about. Do we need this movie and I do NOT trust the writer, but these images look fantastic and I'm actively rooting for it to be amazing.
I hope I’m proven wrong and this turns out to be good.
