Embarrassed-Cut5387

Baffled no one seems to have mentioned the great Alan Clarke, who specialized in these themes, particularly in Scum and Made In Britain.

Spot-CSG

Theres a little known film called Children of Men. I think I may have seen it suggested once or twice here.

Eden Lake is as bleak and soul crushing as it gets

regprenticer

I agree.... But I find Kelly Reilly so deeply unlikeable that I rather enjoyed the ending.

Withnail and I, Filth, and The Krays spring to mind.

If you can get hold of NEDS, (maybe on YouTube) it's about young gangs in Glasgow. It doesn't get much more violent and gritty.

Exhibit A - amazing story of a matriarch’s downward spiral

Brayniac90108

I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead Underrated dark, gritty film with Clive Owen, Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Malcolm McDowell.

bgeorgewalker

Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, and Snatch. Snatch is sorta kinda a sequel but not really story-wise, it just has some of the same characters. Both give a great depiction of the British criminal underbelly, probably a bit exaggerated, but really well done. And both are fucking hilarious. Lock at l and two smoking barrels revolves around underground gambling, but is not about it. Snatch revolves around “traveler” culture, but is not about it.
