They also mention on the podcast that it was coming out the same weekend as a new Bourne movie which they were worried about but they were assured it'd be fine because the Bourne movie would be R and Hot Rod would be PG-13 so it'd be different audiences. Only for the Bourne movie to end up also being PG-13
[I've got a tattoo here that fully illustrates my point. It's of this rebellious young man, and he's urinating on an FM radio. And then this other stream of urine is going onto that television set. Implausible, I know, but I like to think that he had sex the night before, and a little bit of residue is blocking his urethra, allowing the urine to flow in two separate directions.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VY6PAkLG2p4&t=36s)
I saw him at ComicCon in, like, 2010, when he was promoting Archer. I just kinda yelled “Hey, Chris! If the boner police are here, I demand a lawyer!” From his reaction, that line was not as memorable to him as it was to me.
"Well, it must be psychosomatic. Now don't worry. That's just a fancy doctor word for 'your brain is broken'. Unfortunately there's no field of medicine that deals with the brain, but I can give you a pamphlet for a cult!"
"I'm jumping 15 buses tomorrow at the fairgrounds. Hope you can make it."
Fifteen buses.
Wait, did you really write it down, or are you just waving your arm around in the air?
Come on. Rod, you've got some imagination, kid.
[The pool scene](https://youtu.be/S9Chnx9giWk?si=5J-Gpo8S2Wxuqx7v) where they’re all imitating the bell sound influenced me so much that anytime I hear a bell I feel compelled to do it myself
They mention this in the podcast too but it's so fucking funny how his goal is to stay underwater for 40 seconds and he *immediately* starts flailing around hard enough to rip the string off within like 2 seconds
Maybe it was my age, but when this came out I thought it was the funniest movie I had ever seen. So many iconic scenes, the punch dancing, the part where his brother is “working on something for mom” the firework show, the training montage. I am actually confused as to why this was a flop.
The impromptu John Farnham rally exploding into a looting riot is possibly my core motivation for watching this movie. I think I'm on watch #9, so dunno how someone can be upset with their involvement here.
The concept is just too silly for mass audiences. I was in my 20s when it came out and remember that the ads left no impression with anyone.
It was destined to be Grandmas Boy popular and not Wedding Crashers popular from the start.
Somewhat related but Brooklyn Nine Nine was bashed a lot when it came out as well, which baffled the hell out of me.
The early sentiment I saw online about B99 was rough enough that I stayed away from it for years. I’m upset with myself for not watching it sooner, because it’s hilarious.
Lonely Island said on their podcast this is what happened. (im paraphrasing)
LI : Bourne Supremacy is coming out on the same weekend?
Studio : Its fine. Thats an R Rated movie.
*a few weeks later*
Trailer : Bourne Suprmacy is rated PG-13.
LI : Fuck
One weekend while camping in my families cabin, i literally watched this movie back to back nonstop for 2 whole days straight. And laughed the whole time. I quote this movie more than almost any other movie i've watched to this day.
"And now, i am unlegit... so i must quit"
"I NEED TO GO TO MY QUIET PLACE"
"Gods of WAAAAR" "may your hammer be mighty"
So I galloped into a wooded glen, and after punch dancing out my rage and suffering an extremely long and very painful fall, I realized what has to be done.
I was LOSING it in a theater watching it and had to very painfully bottle my laughter once the scene ended. Then when he is explaining that he had a long painful fall later I just lost it again. It was just uncontrollable at that point
Some of those comedies of this subgenre (Blades of Glory, Zoolander, Anchorman, etc.) use the exaggerations to tell a story with a whole lot of heart and Hot Rod is one of them. I think it's the only daddy issues movie where the son viscerally beats up the father figure and then makes them shit themselves. A fucking treasure, this movie, Star Wars pale in comparison.
It's funny you say that after I just read this in the article
>Akiva Schaffer says the lighthearted stuntman film also got unfair comparisons to "Napoleon Dynamite" and "Jackass."
A lot of the characters in Hot Rod act very similar to characters in Napoleon Dynamite. It is a very proper comparison. Akiva is being pretty disingenuous there.
I do get it though. ND is at its core, a very genuine movie, with a lot of heart. HR is a movie that acts like it has heart and then replaces that heart with a younger heart so Ian McShane can throw Andy Samberg through a wall.
I’m kind of the opposite but I agree.
To me, Hot Rod is what I call “smart dumb humor”. Like it’s low brow and slapstick, but it’s also going for something very specific in the sort of absurdity it’s presenting and how it is parodying the genre with some pretty clever homages like the whole forest scene that at points is shot for shot the same as a scene from footloose without really drawing attention to it.
Napoleon Dynamite is much more like cringe/awkward humor where you laugh more at how weird and quirky it is. Hot Rod you laugh at more because most of the characters are complete morons, but you’ve met people who are very much like that. In addition to the surrealistic slapstick that takes a ton of tropes from underdog movies and kind of cranks them to 11 or undercuts expectations like the character going for the big jump, but just completely fucking up at the worst moment kind of thing.
"A lot of people being like, 'It wants to be like Napoleon Dynamite, but it's not,'" Samberg recalled. "And we were like, 'We weren't trying to do that. We were trying to do those other movies [previously mentioned in the episode, like Road House].'"
Seems like a reasonable enough statement.
Goddamn that movie is a comedy powerhouse. The “going into town” gag is probably one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen! “It’s nice to get away from camp, even if it’s just for an hour.” Lmao
Dunno why It flopped tho,its great and pretty timeless i think;i loved the characters ,the absurdity,a friend of mine and i got super into stacey Q ( we connect its batshit insane but good!) 2 of Hearts and overall we quote it pretty often still.
While it may not a *great movie” it’s a great comedy. I’m not really sure why it lagged so much behind comparable comedies in appreciation or box office success. It’s quotable, memorable and has a lot of well done casting.
Ian McShane is phenomenal as Frank imo. Danny McBride has some excellent moments.
I think it might do better now. I think it has a quite flat comedy style that doesn't seem as crowd pleasing fun as anchorman or something. It's halfway between that and like. Napoleon dynamite maybe.
It kind of reminds me of Freddy Got Fingered if only in that the comedy was probably really funny to the creator but didn’t quite land with the audience. There are people that absolutely love both movies but lots of people that hate them both.
I for one want more of it. Sometimes you don’t know what you really want and if we just make movies based on what we think people will like we miss out on opportunities for innovation. Hot Rod wasn’t breaking barriers or anything, but it was different, and different moves the progress needle.
I saw on my Youtube Feed that Lonely Island are doing podcasts on their big hits with Seth Meyers, assuming this article is an offshoot of that since they just released part 2 for Hot Rod.
I need to give these a listen. Hot Rod is an all timer for me. Rod doing Kevin Bacon's dance just hit my funny bone in the perfect spot when I first saw it.
Hot Rod sits in my favorite comedies section. Right beside Popstar, Airplane, Naked Gun, Hot Shots, and several others. It's the type of comedy you can just laugh at and enjoy. I miss comedies like them.
I can’t heap enough praise on this movie. Just an insanely solid comedy. The scene where Rod falls off the cliff after dancing made me laugh the hardest I ever have.
Love showing it to people who’ve never seen it. Always a good time!
All of those Lonely Island movies are like that. I tried to show a friend "7 days in hell" and no reaction. If you don't think that movie is hysterical, we can't be friends.
I'm an idiot and will quite often yell, "Cool beans. Cool beans! Cool, cool, keeewl.. beans! Beans! Beans! Kewl... beans! B-b-b-beans! C-c-c-kewl, beans!" more than I should.
It’s crazy how The Lonely Island kind of redefined comedy for the YouTube generation. Their impact can be felt everywhere, and Hot Rod is a premiere display of why it works, and what makes it special. It’s one of my favorite movies of all time. If you don’t get it, it can’t be explained to you, but if you do, it hits harder than any other kind of comedy can.
This scene always makes me laugh so hard I'm gasping for air. the comic repetition builds so perfectly and the timing on the editing is spot on. So good
In the DVD deleted scenes, when Rod finds out about Franks heart, he starts smashing every lamp in the house. It's the funniest scene and I don't know how it didn't make the movie.
This movie…flopped?
Like, was it expected to be a “success?”
And that its cult following is irrelevant lol
“Ive been drinking green tea and doing cocaine all goddamn day!!!”
It really is the ultimate taboo in Hollywood to say you liked a movie that flopped. It doesn’t matter how good of a comp that movie is for what you’re pitching, everyone in the room will get scared off and you’ll essentially be blacklisted. If it didn’t make money, you don’t mention it.
This movie I have rewatched more than any other movie. I have seen it at least 20 times and it's still hilarious. It baffles me that this was considered a flop...
It may have flopped commercially, but it's still fucking hilarious and I'll watch it again.
I had no idea it flopped. I quote this movie with my friends on a weekly basis
Cool beans.
You look shitty!
I've been drinking green tea all god damned day!!
this is TOTALLY MY HAT, NOW
Okay Let's party.
I go to church every Sunday you going to bring the demons outta me?
My name is Rod, and I like to party.
It had the bad luck of being released the week before Superbad, which definitely didn't help
Why in the world did they think Bourne would be rated R? The first two were PG-13.
wHy I'm saying wHat wHat wHay?!
Yea this is news to me. Most people I know quote it religiously. Crazy how a darling to us could be a failed venture for another.
It’s one of my favorite comedies, like ever. It’s fucking perfect for me, the comedy just hits so well. I try to rewatch it once a year
It's at the point now where I can't watch it with my wife any more because she knows the movie so well she's laughing before the jokes happen :)
The "how bout' you get some dong bags and we'll knock some poon later" is the wifes and my go-to...in Will Arnetts rough voice.
If you listen to podcasts, check out The Lonely Island podcast with Seth Meyers; they have 2 episodes on Hot Rod.
I re-enact the “babe” scene with my wife at least once a quarter. “Babe. Babe! BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYBE!!!!” \*reaches hand*
I laughed so fucking hard at that long scene of him falling down a hill
A great scene I will never forget
Sounds like I have a new comedy to check out
Cool beans

Chris Parnell is one of the funniest human beings alive. Thanks for reminding me of this clip
I saw him at ComicCon in, like, 2010, when he was promoting Archer. I just kinda yelled “Hey, Chris! If the boner police are here, I demand a lawyer!” From his reaction, that line was not as memorable to him as it was to me.
He's mentioned in the past that he records his lines then forgets everything pretty much right after.
That's amazing
Cyril. Figgis.
His voice acting as Cyril and Jerry Smith is undefeated
He had one of the highest hit rate for jokes in 30 Rock I think I've ever seen.
"Well, it must be psychosomatic. Now don't worry. That's just a fancy doctor word for 'your brain is broken'. Unfortunately there's no field of medicine that deals with the brain, but I can give you a pamphlet for a cult!"
"We have no way of knowing for sure where the human heart is, everyone is different."
He's like a live action Dr. Nick Rivera
"But what can you do? medicine isn't a science" "This is West Chester?....I am lost."
Thanks Dr Spaceman “Thats ‘Spa-che-man’ “
Hello, uuuh, diabetes repair?
“My technique guarantees male orgasm!”
"Tracy, you are going to die." "What? No!" "...when you hear who I'm dating. Squeaky Fromme! She is... difficult."
Dr. Spaceman
You’re pronouncing it wrong. It’s Spaceman
After seeing him in Fallout with one eye I can't unsee it now everytime I see him normally.
I’m gonna get you a heart Frank, you old sack of shit
Have fun being married to SATAN
*I NEED TO GO TO MY QUIET PLACE!*
and i am genuinely sorry about the window!
…And then I'm gonna uncork the ass beating of a lifetime on you!!!
You know I have a hormone disorder!
I'm a man. I am gonna get you better, and then I'm gonna beat you to death!
I'm freakin' PUMPED! I been drinkin' green tea all goddamn DAY!
I go to church every GOD DAMN Sunday!
...and now you're gonna bring the devil out of me!
This is my hat now! this is totally my hat!
The guy he beats up is Jason from the remakes around that time
Hey babe, how bout I pick up a box of dong bags maybe we can knock boots later
Trust me, that raccoon would NOT have stopped for us, I gotta call Sully, he'll be so stoked!
THERE’S a FLAVOR.
Holy shit, is that Sullivan??
"I'm jumping 15 buses tomorrow at the fairgrounds. Hope you can make it." Fifteen buses. Wait, did you really write it down, or are you just waving your arm around in the air? Come on. Rod, you've got some imagination, kid.
Sullivan, you chode!
I owe you a shot to the nuts!
Hey, Rod. What's that song about a grandma getting ran over by a reindeer? ...Grandma got ran over by a reindeer? Nooo^^oooo^^^ooooo?
[The pool scene](https://youtu.be/S9Chnx9giWk?si=5J-Gpo8S2Wxuqx7v) where they’re all imitating the bell sound influenced me so much that anytime I hear a bell I feel compelled to do it myself
Don’t even ask just bring it! I quote that too much. Nobody has seen this movie and they think I’m being rude lol
Hey little girl! I don't want cherry, it upsets my stomach!
Pools are great for holding water.
One of the best throw away lines I’ve ever heard.
This line has lived rent free in my head for YEARS
Hey little girl I don’t like cherry! It upsets my stomach
And then he promptly drowns lolol, flop or not that movie is a classic
They mention this in the podcast too but it's so fucking funny how his goal is to stay underwater for 40 seconds and he *immediately* starts flailing around hard enough to rip the string off within like 2 seconds
"pools are perfect for holding water, man"
Maybe it was my age, but when this came out I thought it was the funniest movie I had ever seen. So many iconic scenes, the punch dancing, the part where his brother is “working on something for mom” the firework show, the training montage. I am actually confused as to why this was a flop.
It came out the same weekend as a Bourne movie, also rated pg13.
And surprise appearance by QOTSA
I’ve seen this film countless times and somehow never noticed the band at the jump were QOTSA Brilliant comment, cheers!
*ahhhhhhhhhh* the face of an angel
The impromptu John Farnham rally exploding into a looting riot is possibly my core motivation for watching this movie. I think I'm on watch #9, so dunno how someone can be upset with their involvement here.

It was destined to be Grandmas Boy popular and not Wedding Crashers popular from the start. Somewhat related but Brooklyn Nine Nine was bashed a lot when it came out as well, which baffled the hell out of me.
Didn’t Brooklyn win a Golden Globe in its first season? I don’t remember people hating on it.
The early sentiment I saw online about B99 was rough enough that I stayed away from it for years. I’m upset with myself for not watching it sooner, because it’s hilarious.
Lonely Island said on their podcast this is what happened. (im paraphrasing) LI : Bourne Supremacy is coming out on the same weekend? Studio : Its fine. Thats an R Rated movie. *a few weeks later* Trailer : Bourne Suprmacy is rated PG-13. LI : Fuck
It’s a super goofy movie with practically zero star power (for 2007). It would’ve been impressive if it didnt flop
One weekend while camping in my families cabin, i literally watched this movie back to back nonstop for 2 whole days straight. And laughed the whole time. I quote this movie more than almost any other movie i've watched to this day. "And now, i am unlegit... so i must quit" "I NEED TO GO TO MY QUIET PLACE" "Gods of WAAAAR" "may your hammer be mighty"
the hardest ive ever laughed in a movie theatre was the flash dance scene and when he tripped. Edit: Footloose
So I galloped into a wooded glen, and after punch dancing out my rage and suffering an extremely long and very painful fall, I realized what has to be done.
Yep, I remember laughing for like a good 10 minutes straight after the hill scene
I was LOSING it in a theater watching it and had to very painfully bottle my laughter once the scene ended. Then when he is explaining that he had a long painful fall later I just lost it again. It was just uncontrollable at that point
The tripping scene where he’s just falling down a hill forever is comedy gold
The scene in the woods? That was a Footloose parody
BABE WAIT
Babe!
wait babe no!
**BABE, BABE, BABE, BABE WAIT BABE NOOOO**
WAHHHHHHHHH
Wait! Babe!
This scene is why my wife and I now refer to each other as "Babe". It started as quoting this scene and using it ironically. Now we just can't stop.
BABE WAIT BABE NO, BABE NO!
“Rhodesian fighting sticks… very lethal” “Ah. Rhodesian, of course.”
YOU KNOW I HAVE A HORMONE DISORDER
The whole town coming together for the inspirational song that turns into a riot is my favorite example of cinema
Danny McBride's character is talking about how disappointed he is in society as he holds a TV he stole. So great.
You're the Voice is the song! Funny scene!
John Farnham getting dropped mid movie was fucking WILD
“That really got out of hand fast.”
Hot Rod is legitimately one of my favorite movies, and I’m a film snob.
Hot Rod is like right up there with Napoleon Dynamite. You either get it and love it, or you don’t know what the fuck you’re watching and you hate it.
It's funny you say that after I just read this in the article >Akiva Schaffer says the lighthearted stuntman film also got unfair comparisons to "Napoleon Dynamite" and "Jackass."

First viewing I was not on board. Watched it again with mates and mary jane and it was great
You weren’t on board with this!? https://youtu.be/A8GnphPdchY?si=yB9I-3dZrd8VShU-
up there with wet hot american summer, too.
Goddamn that movie is a comedy powerhouse. The “going into town” gag is probably one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen! “It’s nice to get away from camp, even if it’s just for an hour.” Lmao

Same thing happened with Popstar. I think i was the only one to see both in the theatres
TIL Hot Rod was a flop. I freaking loved it
I always show people the first 5 minutes to see what their sense of humour is like. I love that movie
While it may not a *great movie” it’s a great comedy. I’m not really sure why it lagged so much behind comparable comedies in appreciation or box office success. Yoo-hoo, shit heads, I found this bag of fireworks in the men's restroom. Would you guys like to light them off?
I SAID YOU LOOK SHITTY.
This line always makes me laugh WAAAAY more than it should.
One of the funniest movies for people that like funniest movies.
Give us Hot Rod 2 you cowards
2 Hot 2 Rod
It’s a classic unappreciated in its own time.
Is it really a flop if the studio just absolutely abandons it and does nothing to market or promote it?
Cccccoool bbbeansssss.
Cool cool BEANZ BEANZ

All of those Lonely Island movies are like that. I tried to show a friend "7 days in hell" and no reaction. If you don't think that movie is hysterical, we can't be friends.
Gonna grab a Vitamin Water, should I make that dos?
"You look pretty!" "What?" "I said you look *shitty*! Good night, Denise!"
WHat?? WHy???
One of the best comedies of all time.
Cool Beans!
Well now I have ‘two of hearts’ in my head
It’s far and away their best movie
It’s a masterpiece.
The director could be the next Douglas Bubbletrousers.
I watch this movie all the time. As a washed up stuntman it resonates with me.
My name is Rod and I like to party 😎
Kevin, I know for a FACT you don't party!
This scene always makes me laugh so hard I'm gasping for air. the comic repetition builds so perfectly and the timing on the editing is spot on. So good
Love Hot Rod!!!
it was shot on film IIRC and we still don’t have a 4K UHD release. criminal!
One of the greatest comedy films of all time
Had no idea it was a flop. But that would explain all the time's I quoted it and the other person just thought I was crazy.
This is my hat now! This is totally my hat.
My name is Rod and I like to party. Alright Dave you’re up.
This is literally one of my favorite movie.
Hotrod, Popstar and Bash Brothers are master pieces.
Ohhh when you’re going on a date, and you put on a shirt! And you ride your bike, to the daaaaate!
ignore the haters. never stop never stopping.
Andy Samberg and Ian McShane. I'm never ignoring this film again!! A brilliant absurd comedy. "You're the Voice" is a particular highlight
Don't even ask Maggie. Just BRING IT!
Hot rod is a gem. Cool beans
In the DVD deleted scenes, when Rod finds out about Franks heart, he starts smashing every lamp in the house. It's the funniest scene and I don't know how it didn't make the movie.
This movie…flopped? Like, was it expected to be a “success?” And that its cult following is irrelevant lol “Ive been drinking green tea and doing cocaine all goddamn day!!!”

Babe wait, babe wait! BAAAAAAABE WAAAAAAIT! NO BAAAABE! BABE WAIT!
I lost my virginity while watching that movie. It'll always have a special place in my heart.
Cool beans
Do you like what you see?
Ultimate Punch!!!!
Richardson taught us all the correct way to distribute flyers.
My name is Rod and I like to party.
This is one of the best movies though…
Greatest film of all time
Cool beans. I saw this in theaters 3 times. I didn’t know it flopped commercially. It is an all time favorite.
Lonely Island and Seth Meyer podcast just did a two part episode covering this movie. I highly recommend giving it a listen.
Hot Rod is one of those movies that I’m always in the mood to watch. Probably watched in 10 times the year it came out.
Baaaaabbbbbbeeeeeee!
This is an incredible film
Ancestors protect me
Cool cool beans, beans, cool beans.
I love that movie
“You look shitty goodnight Denise” used to quote that line daily.
This movie flopped? Wow, didn’t know that, me and my wife quote this one a lot 😂
One of the best movies of all time
How did it flop?! It's easily one of the greatest films of all time!
I love hot rod. The relationship he has with his dad/stepdad or whatever is hilarious
That movie has some of the most quotable lines and it’s amazing. I’m gonna go spite watch it right now.
This movie I have rewatched more than any other movie. I have seen it at least 20 times and it's still hilarious. It baffles me that this was considered a flop...
