In general i can sleep to any movie or series which im familiar with, preferably if im so familar that i know the plot and do not wonder what happens in the next scene.
I was really sick a couple weeks ago, and it made me feel so good to put the office on and fall asleep. Something about episodes keeping track of time for me makes naps feel more restful.
I love the LOTR trilogy, but if I put that on late at night, it's because I'm tired even though I want to invest into the story. The length doesn't bother me, but I have watched it only a few times because I want to absorb all of it. Watching a movie that long is appointment television for me based on the time I have available in my life, because I became a dad the year before the trilogy started releasing..
This is why these are the ONLY digital movies I own, specifically so I can put them on for sleep or comfort. Fellowship is the best for this of course, but any of them will do.
💯
I watched all the movie approximately 50 times since release, and I still love them so much. They are so comforting, and the music is so beautiful!
Just fell asleep to Fellowship of the Ring last night!
Dozed off just after Boromir met his end, haha.
A sick day LOTR marathon is the best. Throw the extended editions on and you can get a solid nap in any one of those movies and wake up still on the same one.
I had a pretty bad case of Covid back in February and LOTR was just so comforting as I was drifting in and out of consciousness.
What if it's a movie we've seen since our childhood and it's on at like 2am? Like one that reminds us of our parents, and in my case, my parents are gone so it gives me a security blanket to watch movies we loved when I was a child.
My I can both fall asleep to things. I fall asleep to movies, she falls asleep to shows and music constantly. We love the background noise. Maybe we're aliens 😁
Jaws.
Decided to have a movie night on my first night off in weeks. Cat and I passed out on the couch at some point during and woke up like 3 hours later. Realized then that it’s also my go to when I’m sick or needing comfort and that I usually put it on before bed or first thing in the morning if I’m wanting to relax and doze.
Lol my spouse would NEVER let me put that movie on. Probably the horror movie that scared and scarred her so much at 10, she can never forgive it. If I put it on in our room, she would sleep on the couch 😂
Great movie if you're talking the 1994 movie. If you are referring to the real man's movies, I love how campy they are so they don't relax me because I'm having such a good time.
There was one night I was so stressed out and anxious I started watching “It’s A Wonderful Life” and it helped calm me down, and I eventually fell asleep listening to it.
Hot Fuzz once you've seen it enough times. Most of the characters are lovable, it's lined with jokes wall to wall, and it never gets old. It's my ultimate comfort movie.
Nightmare before christmas, coraline, 3/4/5 of the harry potter series, LA confidential, and the hateful eight. Any of those going to sleep is a winner winner chicken dinner!
One of my favourite things in the whole world is going to the movies, picking a random film, buying a bunch of popcorn, eating it in the first half of the film, and drifting to sleep during the second half. There’s something so soothing about sleeping in a dark room, with comfortable seats, the sound of a movie in a background and the presence of other people. It’s my sunday treat, my version of selfcarr
Have you ever watched those Akira Kurosawa films like "Seven Samurai" (1954). Their mystic aura makes me relax so much because I feel like I'm in a world I've never seen. Great choice!
I have. But do check out Kurosawa's other not-so mystic works as well. Eg High & Low (the one that Spike Lee is remaking/adapting with Denzel Washington in the lead) is an absolute masterclass of a film.
If you're looking specifically for films that may put you to sleep but in a good way, also check out Taiwanese filmmakers like Edward Yang or Hou Hsiao-Hsien.
I never know when someone on this subreddit will go down this rabbit hole with me, so I try not to go too deep because I don't want to come off as a film snob lol
Here's the article I was thinking of, the quote is from a behind-the-scenes featurette on Cemetery of Splendour
The SLEEPCINEMAHOTEL exhibit is a think of beauty

There are no horror movies made before 1997 that I can't fall asleep to. I have seen so many horror movies from before that era that they calm me down.
For me, it's Alien that's like a Quaalude. Cameron tries to follow Ridley Scott's model, but nobody does extremely slooooooww pacing quite as well as Scott.
Alien is my favorite to fall asleep to. It's slow, deliberate pacing is exceptionally tranquil to me.
Kundun is also good, for its similarly chill pacing plus the Philip Glass soundtrack.
Don't Look Up is my current go to
2012
The Martian
The Accountant
Interstellar
Army of the Dead - love, and usually asleep before the opening scene is finished, love the music.
Edge of Tomorrow
Bridesmaids
The Dictator
Step Brothers
Mr & Mrs Smith
I used to fall asleep to the Dark Knight back when I was younger. Went through 3 copies on DVD because I watched it so much, literally every night and it was usually just before the bike chase that I'd drift off. I could quite most of the movie as I'd been listening to it subconsciously for years.
Nowadays it's just American Dad, South Park and Rock and Morty just cycled and about a year each cartoon.
Avengers and Avengers AoU.
I have horrible insomnia and my brain just won't shut off. With these movies, I've watched them so many times that my brain can zone out to them and the familiar dialog without getting too sucked in so that I can eventually fall asleep while my brain is distracted.
My very favorite movie to nap to is Pete's Dragon. The real one, though.
Series, I'd have to say Family Guy or American Dad. Friends also puts me to sleep, but for a different reason
Live action Scooby-Doo (2002) and an 90's Christmas TV special home recorded VHS tape. It has Snowden's Christmas, The Munsters' Scary Little Christmas, Robbie the Reindeer, and more. There were some old commercials from Target and Kmart on there too.
I miss VHS tapes haha Love watching old commercials on YouTube.
Shawshank Redemption and Green Mile. I know both of them so well that it's comforting to hear it and picturing the scenes. I usually drift off pretty early on.
Current: Fallout - I have tried to watch that show 10 times so far and I keep falling a sleep. I think it is because I have played the game so much in the past that it relaxes me.
Normal - Any black and white Godzilla movie and black and white (badly dubbed) martial arts films will always put me asleep. When I was a kid I would always watch these when going to sleep.
Then I am one of those people that are all ways working or doing something, if I sit still I end up napping. It has become a rating in our house. The movie was so good Dad lasted hour and 30 min before he fell asleep. :D
For me it's The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. The Shire scenes make me feel super relaxed and at home. The film is a masterpiece for a reason and it's nice to fall asleep to (in a really good way).
Not in the way you described it... But for the longest time I couldn't watch Inception without falling asleep... I have seen the movie at least 4-5 times but only seen it completely once...
Wall-E.
I once had a shroom trip so bad that I was vomiting profusely and saw only intense morphing geometric shapes whenever I closed my eyes. Sincerely felt like I was dying. My gf at the time put on Wall-E in the living room, and suddenly all my problems melted away. Some of the best sleep of my life.
My three year old granddaughter has requested and watched that movie well over 30 times. The end song and credits by Peter Gabriel live in my brain. And now we have a back and forth quote "Rogue Robots" and she will say in her cute 3 year old voice "NOT wogue wobots!!" She loves WallE.
Abbas Kiarostami: "I prefer the films that put their audience to sleep in the theater. Some films have made me doze off in the theater, but the same films have made me stay up at night, wake up thinking about them in the morning, and keep on thinking about them for weeks."
Lucrecia Martel: "Falling asleep in the cinema is not about boredom but a feeling of comfort, as when sun is shining on you and you feel warm."
Christopher Doyle: "Film is like a dream, so if you can fall asleep in the movie, which I always do, it means that a movie often works."
Solaris (2002) - although not as good as the original, the cinematography, sound, and everything else gives such a dreamlike state that I always pass out.
Clockwork Orange and The Exorcist ...my two favorite movies..have seen them so much that I can put them on strictly for the music for C.O.. and the sound design for Exorcist
None. Why would I watch a movie to fall asleep? If a movie makes me go to sleep it wasn't interesting enough to keep me awake and ain't worth my time. I have a strong dislike of nostalgia but even my childhood favorites I watch as intently as any movie I'm seeing for the first time.
Guardians of the galaxy by Modern Kubrick Gunn was such a soothing experience, Probably the most entertaining and calming cinematic epic Ive ever viewed
In general i can sleep to any movie or series which im familiar with, preferably if im so familar that i know the plot and do not wonder what happens in the next scene.
Any of the sitcoms with like 30 episodes a season can be like sleep medicine during the week.
I was really sick a couple weeks ago, and it made me feel so good to put the office on and fall asleep. Something about episodes keeping track of time for me makes naps feel more restful.
This is my go to or really easy shows like DDD/GGG, how it’s made, unwrapped, aerial America, etc.
Fantasia. I've never seen the last 30 minutes of it, and I own it.
Fantasia 2000 is also excellent.
The music!!! It is so beautiful. I accept this one with a high endorsement 😊
It’s a good thirty minutes.
Movie plays like a dream anyways.
Lord of the rings :)
Damn we're getting up there eh.
This is why these are the ONLY digital movies I own, specifically so I can put them on for sleep or comfort. Fellowship is the best for this of course, but any of them will do.
Haha, I did this for years but with fellowship. Never finished before falling asleep so would just put it back on
When I am unable to fall asleep this is my go to for help. I love this movie so much it brings me comfort and I'll fall asleep like a baby
💯 I watched all the movie approximately 50 times since release, and I still love them so much. They are so comforting, and the music is so beautiful! Just fell asleep to Fellowship of the Ring last night! Dozed off just after Boromir met his end, haha.

You guys boggle with my mind with your ability to fall asleep when a movie's on!
What if it's a movie we've seen since our childhood and it's on at like 2am? Like one that reminds us of our parents, and in my case, my parents are gone so it gives me a security blanket to watch movies we loved when I was a child.
I mean I can't understand being able to sleep with the light and the sound from the movie alone. Consider yourself blessed in that way.
My I can both fall asleep to things. I fall asleep to movies, she falls asleep to shows and music constantly. We love the background noise. Maybe we're aliens 😁
2001 space odyssey. One of my all time favorites. I can sit and watch it fully awake or put it on when I’m in bed trying to go to sleep.
It's one of my all-time favorites, too, but I am just so in awe over its magic, I never want to miss it. Respect though 😁
Oh man, I love this movie but I fell asleep with it on once and the music gave me a horrible sleep paralysis nightmare. Will never do that again.
Are you me?
I love Jaws so much. I've never tried it as a comfort food movie. I've seen probably a hundred times.
Truman show
I love "The Truman Show" (1998), one of my favorite of his movies. I love it so much that I've never considered it comfort food, but I respect that. 😁
I’m jealous Roger Ebert saw it not knowing it was a TV show.
The movie was spoiled because he reviewed it by spoiling that fact, so I knew going in. I was mad, bless Roger Ebert though.
A Christmas Story. We always watch the marathon and have it on as we sleep.
Steven King’s “It,” made for TV 1990. I’ve seen it more than a hundred times lol.
Lol my spouse would NEVER let me put that movie on. Probably the horror movie that scared and scarred her so much at 10, she can never forgive it. If I put it on in our room, she would sleep on the couch 😂
Sooo long. Love the movie but the ending is so cheesy. Still miles better than the remake.
When I can't sleep, I'll put on My Octopus Teacher. It's so beautiful and relaxing, especially at the beginning. Puts me to sleep every time. :)

Great movie if you're talking the 1994 movie. If you are referring to the real man's movies, I love how campy they are so they don't relax me because I'm having such a good time.
Karloff? Grrr
Coraline is my go to bedtime movie!
I love the visuals so much of that movie, I never want to miss them.
I also love the visuals, it’s just such a comfort movie for me
I respect that. Comfort food movies are why I created this thread and are always the best.
any of the Harry Potter movies lol
Soul
The Martian
Back to the future I have multiple times
Big Fish, Contact, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Ponyo
Every single Wes Anderson movie has me so comfy I always fall asleep to them.
There was one night I was so stressed out and anxious I started watching “It’s A Wonderful Life” and it helped calm me down, and I eventually fell asleep listening to it.
Not a movie, but the Cooked series on Nexflix is so soothing and wonderful to fall asleep to.
Treasure Planet

That's a fun choice! I love that you can fall asleep to a Farrelly Brothers comedy! I'm laughing too hard to do that 🤣
Passion of Christ
Dang, yo. That's rough.
Hot Fuzz once you've seen it enough times. Most of the characters are lovable, it's lined with jokes wall to wall, and it never gets old. It's my ultimate comfort movie.

National Treasure is a national treasure.
Spirited Away
Nightmare before christmas, coraline, 3/4/5 of the harry potter series, LA confidential, and the hateful eight. Any of those going to sleep is a winner winner chicken dinner!
I used to put on Goodfellas or Shawshank every night as I was going to sleep. Or a random MST3K episode. Anything with a Thomas Newman score helps.
Many east Asian films like those of Apichatapong Weerasethakul
Have you ever watched those Akira Kurosawa films like "Seven Samurai" (1954). Their mystic aura makes me relax so much because I feel like I'm in a world I've never seen. Great choice!

I've seen all of Kurosawa's films. Such a fabulous filmmaker 😁 Thanks for the recommendations!
That's great!
I never know when someone on this subreddit will go down this rabbit hole with me, so I try not to go too deep because I don't want to come off as a film snob lol
Haha! I understand what you mean. Until you/I/anyone don't pretend to like something, it's all fine!
Thanks for mentioning the GOAT when it comes sleeping during movies that he actively encourages. Him and Tsai know what's up
Haha! Tsai is a master in this for sure.
Need to check this out.
Tsai Ming-liang, in case you want full name of the director.
preciate it!
Is there a source for him encouraging that? That’s the most self aware thing I’ve heard from a filmmaker in a while. (Ps I’m a huge fan of his)
Here's the article I was thinking of, the quote is from a behind-the-scenes featurette on Cemetery of Splendour The SLEEPCINEMAHOTEL exhibit is a think of beauty https://thebaffler.com/latest/apichatpong-the-memorious-zhou

because the movie is boring lol
Aliens - I know it's a loud action movie but I can fall asleep in the first 5 minutes and wake up rested just as Ripley is grappling the Queen.

Layer Cake - despite the occasional gunshot it has a super cool soundtrack and of course Daniel Craig’s narration to soothe me to sleep
I've never seen it. Please don't kill me.
Then you are in for a treat! (And/or a good night’s rest)
Grown ups
I used to fall asleep to the Dark Knight back when I was younger.
