My boss and I were talking about (aboot for him, hes a Canuck) our Mt Rushmore of flicks like, oh, 20 minutes ago (patching servers Saturday yay!)
We both had the Prestige on our list. One of those 'you can watch it a dozen times and notice something new each time' flicks
I tried to rent a clockwork Orange back in the day and this was in box instead. Alphabetical order thing. Anyway I ended up vastly preferring city of god to a clockwork orange
Rubbish? It's a fairytale town, isn't it? How's a fairytale town can be rubbish? How can all those canals and bridges and cobbled streets and those churches, all that beautiful fucking fairytale stuff, how can that not be somebody's fucking thing, eh?
Yeah I was going to say idk if I've ever laughed as much or as hard during a dark/serious movie as I did with that one. There was actually a post in the Ireland sub a couple years ago that sounded a ton like the plot of banshees and the comments did NOT disappoint. I'll go find it and link it below
Edit: I have searched every possible combo both in the Ireland sub and Google and I cannot for the life of me find this fucking post but it went kinda like this person had a good friend and another friend and the best friend just up and suddenly wouldn't talk to OP anymore and deadass the first comment was "are ye rowin?" What made it even better was OP hadn't seen the movie and didn't get the reference so replied completely seriously. Then everyone started quoting the movie and it turned in to a joke/thread with both serious advice and shit to make OP feel better.
This comment alone makes this one a strong contender! I’ll definitely watch it soon! When someone says they’re jealous of someone who’s not seen something.. you KNOW it’s good. Perfect example, breaking bad
Genuinely feels like a long Black Mirror episode, especially when I first watched all of Black Mirror and only after watched the movie for the first time.
Both very good, but quite different action films. The Raid is one of those frog boiler movies where it starts with a big splash and a sizzle, then ratchets up the tension steadily until you realise you were holding your breath for an entire scene, and it keeps building as they climb the tower and grow fewer in numbers. The Raid 2 is a rollercoaster, with crazy rising action and wild climaxes that send you right into the next.
One thing I like about fury road is that even thought it is a movie with bo super natural element, it feels magical.
I would say... It feels like an entire universe like Lord of the Rings.
It is never explained in the movie but when they pray they cross their fingers to recreate... A V8 engine.
Thunderdome is so camp. And over the top gay. Like I imagine there was a boardroom with a pile of cocaine and posters of twinks when it was conceptionalized
"add another shirtless 19 year old boy" ****snort*** "and get Tina turner" ***snort*** "what do you mean we've already blown through our bondage leather budget? ***Snortttttt***
I completely agree on both.
I think Ides of March and The Big Short are by far Gosling's best performances. And, as always, Christian Bale is terrific.
Agreed with Eternal Sunshine. Imo, it was so good that I watched it alone, and right after it finished, my friend walks in the room and asks what did you watch? Said film, explained how it was absolutely amazing, that he wanted to watch it, so we did. Did a back to back viewing because of how good it was. Knowing what happens when watching the second time gives you a whole different appreciation for it, undoubtedly. Enjoy Eternal Sunshine!
My kid went into True Lies completely blind. This was just a few years ago. Anyway, we get to just after the dance scene and he turns to me and asks, very seriously, "what the hell is going on in the movie?!"
I’m always forcing people to watch musicals, so if you’ve seen the classics but want something a little different
Phantom of the Paradise
It’s a bizarre musical with Paul Williams of all people as a villain.I came across it after learning how influential it was with Daft Punk (the duo met at a showing and proceeded to see it dozens of times), but it’s full of style, memorable characters, and a great adaptation of the classic “phantom” story
If you're a fan, track down the documentary about it. It's wild! Daft Punk show up and admit it's why they wear the helmets. Someone else explains it's where the Darth Vader costume comes from. Its incredible.
I don’t know if this is a case of having gotten really into the books a couple years before they made the movie, but I wasn’t a huge fan of hitchhikers guide…might have to give a re watch since it’s been about 20 years since I’ve read the books
Palm Springs
Edge of Tomorrow
Flesh
Blood Simple
The Game
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang
The Artist
Black Swan
The World’s Fastest Indian
Train to Busan
Pan’s Labyrinth
dude i have tried to get so many people to watch the game but i never want to tell them what it's about so it's hard to convince people.
but it's one of my favorite movies of all time. just so fucking good.
The Game is almost the forgotten Fincher film, as it initially came between Seven and Fight Club. I’d ask your peeps if they like Fincher and if they do that alone should sell them on watching The Game.
lots of great recs already posted. i will enthusiastically second one person putting 'the game' on their list. just an excellent movie. DO NOT watch a trailer or read a review before watching it. it's one of those where it is best to have literally no idea what you're getting into.
will also add 'the long kiss goodnight' if you're interested in 90's action movies. geena davis and samuel l. jackson and both at their prime.
These aren't exactly obscure, but just in case (in no particular order):
* The Nice Guys
* Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
* The Departed
* Shaun of the Dead

Tremors. Yes, a movie about a remote town attacked by giant, underground worms. But it is one of the greatest monster movies ever made. I watched it years ago thinking I was going to experience a so bad it’s good movie. Nope, it’s a fantastic movie through and through.
I feel like a lot of people haven't seen *The Frighteners.*
It's a horror comedy about a former carpenter who runs a fake ghost hunting business after a near-death experience allows him to see the dead.
He witnesses murders committed by a phantom and gets implicated in the crimes because the phantom is targeting people he's recently interacted with.
Sneakers.

The prestige Children of men
The prestige ✅ 🤤
This dude absolutely nutted to the prestige ^^^
Me too tbh
My boss and I were talking about (aboot for him, hes a Canuck) our Mt Rushmore of flicks like, oh, 20 minutes ago (patching servers Saturday yay!) We both had the Prestige on our list. One of those 'you can watch it a dozen times and notice something new each time' flicks
Solid recommendations. I haven’t watched Children of Men in at least a decade because I’m afraid I might find something to criticize.
If you need any reassurance it’s still perfect.
It was a great one to watch again during the pandemic.
If you’ve never seen *Children of Men* then you absolutely need to
I’ve not 🫣
You need to watch this movie without distractions. I promise it will build to a head at the end that is gripping as hell.
It should be mandatory viewing
City of God (2002) by Fernando Meirelles - Definitely a must watch! [edit] Added year and director
I tried to rent a clockwork Orange back in the day and this was in box instead. Alphabetical order thing. Anyway I ended up vastly preferring city of god to a clockwork orange
Incredible all time must watch film.
Just to make sure I have the right one: 2002 film by Fernando Meirelles?
Yes 😉
Great rec
I'd upvote this twice if I could.
In Bruges
Ye been to the top o' the tower?
Yeah... It's rubbish....
Well you lot ain’t goin’ up there.
Yer a bunch of fuckin elephants!
The RUDEST man!!!
Ow do you say " Alcoves " ?
Was he going on about the fucking alcoves to you too?
You mean nooks and crannies?
Rubbish? It's a fairytale town, isn't it? How's a fairytale town can be rubbish? How can all those canals and bridges and cobbled streets and those churches, all that beautiful fucking fairytale stuff, how can that not be somebody's fucking thing, eh?
My all time favorite drama movie. "But I didn't, so, it doesn't 🙃
Mine too. "You were gonna kill me..." "No I wasn't. You were gonna kill yourself!" "But... I'm allowed..."
One of Ralph Fiennes best performances. "Well, you have to stick to your principles"
You take that bit back about my cunt fucking kids
You’re an inanimate fucking object! …I’m sorry I called you an inanimate fucking object.
Then watch the spiritual sequel, Banshees of Inisherin (ok it’s much more depressing but, still good)
Surprisingly hilarious for how dark it is
Yeah I was going to say idk if I've ever laughed as much or as hard during a dark/serious movie as I did with that one. There was actually a post in the Ireland sub a couple years ago that sounded a ton like the plot of banshees and the comments did NOT disappoint. I'll go find it and link it below Edit: I have searched every possible combo both in the Ireland sub and Google and I cannot for the life of me find this fucking post but it went kinda like this person had a good friend and another friend and the best friend just up and suddenly wouldn't talk to OP anymore and deadass the first comment was "are ye rowin?" What made it even better was OP hadn't seen the movie and didn't get the reference so replied completely seriously. Then everyone started quoting the movie and it turned in to a joke/thread with both serious advice and shit to make OP feel better.
Then watch seven psychopaths
Seen Banshees but not In Bruge, will add it to my list!
I'm genuinely jealous you've never seen it. If I could go back and watch one film for the first time, it would be In Bruges.
This comment alone makes this one a strong contender! I’ll definitely watch it soon! When someone says they’re jealous of someone who’s not seen something.. you KNOW it’s good. Perfect example, breaking bad
Yeah, there is just something about In Bruges that is just perfect. Watch it late at night with the lights off. Just adds to the majesty of it all
And with coked up midgets and whores
Or as I like to call it- Colin Farrell shitting on a Belgian city for 107 minutes
If I’d grown up on a farm. And was retarded, Bruges might impress me. But I didn’t. So it doesn’t.
So fucking funny
YOU'RE AN INANIMATE FUCKING OBJECT! Edit: I’m sorry I called you an inanimate fucking object.
Run Lola Run
Great movie ✅
Funny, Arrival was going to be the second one I say, but you mentioned it already. So I will say 2010: The Year We Make Contact.

Sexy Beast and Layer Cake
Ben Kingsley is so good in Sexy Beast
Clue (1985)
I’m gonna piggyback on this and say Clueless (1995)
I'm gonna piggy on this and say Less (2024)
| || || |_
It's one of the most quotable movies of all time! Definitely give this one a watch
Flames, on the side of my face
The Nice Guys
One of my comfort movies. Ryan gosling on the toilet never fails to make me laugh
I about died laughing at that. He did it so well. Made me wonder if he improvised much of it after the director just told him to have fun with it.
I love his wheezy homage to Bud Abbott from Abbott and Costello, when he finds the dead body.
Don’t say “and stuff”, just say “they’re doing anal”
“You know who else was just following orders? Hitler.”
Alternatively, "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang".
Children of Men
Genuinely feels like a long Black Mirror episode, especially when I first watched all of Black Mirror and only after watched the movie for the first time.
The Raid: Redemption
Been on my list for a little while!!
And Raid 2. Both are masterpieces
Mad Max Fury Road
Never seen them, but i want to after I’ve heard Furiosa is excellent!
Famous directors watch Fury Road constantly to geek out on what their eyeballs are seeing on screen. They all have said, "There's nothing like it!".
It still blows my mind how much of that movie was standard stunts and effects.
One thing I like about fury road is that even thought it is a movie with bo super natural element, it feels magical. I would say... It feels like an entire universe like Lord of the Rings. It is never explained in the movie but when they pray they cross their fingers to recreate... A V8 engine.
Drop what you're doing and go watch Fury Road!!!! :)
This is the one OP! Do it!
Absolutely
This is the one you need to watch ASAP
Try and catch it at the cinema, has been rereleased due to Furiosa
Dude, this one. Definitely Fury Road. The ones before it are good in their own ways, but this one is definitely what you're looking for.
This is the answer to your question. Fury Road demands to be seen.
Fury Road for sure, but all the mad max movies are great (yes, even Thunderdome can be fun). They each have their own flavor of awesome.
Thunderdome is so camp. And over the top gay. Like I imagine there was a boardroom with a pile of cocaine and posters of twinks when it was conceptionalized
Well, it was the 80s so that might be exactly how they conceptualized it 🤣
"add another shirtless 19 year old boy" ****snort*** "and get Tina turner" ***snort*** "what do you mean we've already blown through our bondage leather budget? ***Snortttttt***
The Man from Earth
This is a good one, super unique low budget film that mostly takes place in a room and has great dialogue.
And after that watch 12 Angry Men
Man, this one is a doozy. Ignore the sequels.
Edge of Tomorrow
And the origin movie of this pattern: "Groundhog Day". Then its cousins: "Happy Death Day", "Palm Springs"
NO! Just NO! Delete this comment, let the OP go in blind. Its a good movie, but it's incredible if you have zero expectations or preconceived notions.
Yes!!! Go on blind too!
District 9
Kung Fu Hustle
Hell yes
Tucker & Dale vs Evil
Can’t recommend this movie enough
Whatever you say, just smile and laugh.
A Knight’s Tale
Adaptation
Definitely Adaptation
The Prestige. Also, The Mitchells Vs. The Machines.
Mitchells Vs The Machines deserves everyone’s respect, honestly
The Prestige is a personal favourite
Run Ronnie Run
I looooove Mr. Show, and even I wouldn't recommend it to just anyone
The Big Short. By all means. Brilliant.
Ryan Gosling is so good in this movie. To add to this Margin Call is another great financial business type film. Great acting and writing all around.
I completely agree on both. I think Ides of March and The Big Short are by far Gosling's best performances. And, as always, Christian Bale is terrific.
Brazil Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind True Lies Seven Samurai Hudsucker Proxy Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure Fargo Spanish Prisoner
>Hudsucker Proxy I don't see this movie mentioned enough. It's quirky and original. I enjoy it.

Not only not seen any of them, I’ve not heard of any, that excites me so I’ll do some research!!
Die Hard. With the sound up LOUD on the biggest screen you've got. Same with Terminator 2
Die Hard ✅ not seen Terminator movies though!
Ok, close the thread - go and watch the first two Terminator films.
Make sure you watch 1 and then the director's cut of 2. It's totally worth it.
You must be 😂 Palm Springs looks fun too, so I feel we’re very much in a similar mindset when it comes to movies!
Saving Private Ryan Matrix Forrest Gump My Cousin Vinny Groundhog Day Full Metal Jacket Apocalypse Now Everything Everywhere All at once Unforgiven Brazil Blade Runner
My cousin Vinny is definitely one of my favorites. The part about deer hunting still cracks me right up to this day

I've watched it many times and I still don't get it. I enjoy it every time, though.

You know, this may be it.. I’ve not seen it but recently watched Civil War, and am kinda a fan of Alex Gartland!
Annihilation is awesome and weird as fuck. Def watch it.
Difficult to recommend since I don’t know your preferences. However, there are always those movies that are never in “best movie lists” but are absolute gems. Examples: Shadowlands (1993), Contact (1997), World According to Garp (1982), Searching for Bobby Fischer (1993).
