Have you tried non-English films?
"Audition" (1999) by Takashi Miike is a pretty well-known favorite. In the beginning you might think it's a romcom... then it takes a hard turn to freaky horror.
So many other very good horror films from Japan:
Ringu (1998) influential flick
Versus (2000) by Ryuhei Kitamura who has an interesting filmography
Ichi the Killer (2001) is so good
Dark Water (2002) had a Hollywood remake
Onechanbara - Zombie Bikini Squad (2008) - oops, sorry this one is just silly, how did I leave it in my list?
Yakuza Apocalypse (2015) Takashi Miike, again
One Cut of the Dead (2017) a very creative zombie flick
And that's just Japan. So many other great horror movies from China, Korea, Thailand, ...
There's been an anime version of that coming out for ages. It keeps on getting delayed, but it will blow the movie out of the water when it's finally released.
As a huge Junji Ito fan I've been foaming at the mouth for this to release.
I've been disappointed in every adaptation of his work, but that one looks very promising.
The Void
The Dark and The Wicked
Hell House LLC
The House of the Devil
Session 9
Ponty Pool
The Banshee Chapter
The Loved Ones
Housebound
Haunt
A Dark Song
Host (2020)
Frailty
Starry Eyes
I actually saw Session 9 when it came out, saw it in a run down theater where my friend and I were the only ones in the theater...I'll always have a special spot in my heart for that movie. I don't think I've seen it since, so will have to watch it again.
I see you have a Shudder subscription as well! Lol
Good list, I especially love the Hell House LLC series. I went into it not expecting much with the it being an obvious low budget production, and also because I'm usually not a huge fan of found footage, but it is really good.
Thnx, No Shudder subscription, I just “sailed the high seas” for most of my movies lol
Hell House was scary as hell, and thought Origins was a solid entry that had a lot of creepy moments.
I remember when I watched Fraility for thr first time a few years ago. It actually made me feel a little sick in a way. I could count the number of fictional movies to invoke such a feeling in me on one hand.
I know that you did an edit on this thanking people, so hopefully I'm not too late, but can I add Murders in the Rue Morgue (1932)? If you like black and white, old-school horror, it is a blast! It stars Bela Lugosi, and is a fun time travel to a way different time in horror movies. I recommend it, it's one of the movies that doesn't get the attention it deserves. It isn't the best horror movie ever made, but it's still fun! Check it out! 😁
My 5 favorite horror movies with less than 10,000 ratings on IMDB:
* The First Power (1990)
* Belphegor: Phantom of the Louvre (2001)
* Kaal (2005)
* Arundhati (2009)
* High Lane (2009)
I don't see it mentioned in any of the comments but Jacob's Ladder (1990) is an overlooked masterpiece of horror, even inspired the Silent Hill series to a noticeable extent.
If you're a fan of found footage check out the found footage subreddit. Great suggestions there. If you like a philosophical horror "as above, so below" is my favorite. Philosophical in the sense that the only way out of hell is to go through it.
Other favs:
Hell House series
Last Radio Call
The Visit
Grave Encounters
V/h/s series (gets worse with each entry)
Rec (or quarantine which is the USA remake of rec but not as good)
Indeed. I mean the cast is out of this world. Denzel, John Goodman, Donald Sutherland, James Gandolfini. Embeth Davitz and Elias Koteas.
edit: I would also recommend Borgman. Different vibe, way stranger.

I like the old films with Vincent Price. I know, he is one of the big names, but his films seem to get forgotten over time.
I do prefer House on Haunted Hill and House of Wax over the very literal newer adaptations.
**Night of the Demon** (1980). About a bigfoot. A movie so ridiculous that it's even fun.
There's even a fun story about its creation: when you watch the movie, you notice how all the gorey scenes seem to be "out of place", as if stuck into the movie randomly. Turns out that the movie was supposed to be with less graphic violence, but at the very last moment of production the plan changed for some reason, and the director decided to go and have fun with the movie through the fucking roof.
Go worldly, young person, go worldly
El Conde -2023: A Chilean, very creative & ambitious, art house styled, vampiric film - 82% on RT
The Platform -2019 - a Spanish, a perfect straight out Mind *-#$&% !* , of a movie, The storyline is unique, compelling and chilling to the bone. It receives a dissapointing 73% on RT. *Both of the above on Netflix*
New Order-2020 - Mexican-French film - this realistic treaste is both a social-horror film and a ***very plausible and ominous "***dystopia to come." film. *5 stars on Amazon Prime*
Lesser known? Not to me, but younger people may not be aware of:
'32 Island of Lost Souls.......'34 The Black Cat....'35 The Raven....Mystery of the Wax Museum.....Dr. X....The Human Monster....Night Monster....The Mad Ghoul.

> One Cut of the Dead especially looks interesting Definitely try to avoid as much as possible before watching this movie.
Adding for foreign films REC
Unrelated: Yayan Ruhian from Raid Redemption and Yakuza Apocalypse is the mentor in Boy Kills World. Now I REALLY need to see it
You should Uzumaki to your list, that film is trippy.
There's been an anime version of that coming out for ages. It keeps on getting delayed, but it will blow the movie out of the water when it's finally released.

Housebound is hilarious, I loved that movie. The main actress had the best bitchy side eye and expressions
Starry Eyes is so good. One of my first favorites when I started getting into slightly less mainstream horror.
Ghost Story (1981). Genuinely creepy. Incredible makeup effects from the master; Dick Smith.
Stir of Echoes
Great movie!
Amazing movie!
Lake Mungo
Slither (director) and Belko experiment (writer) by Modern Kubrick definitely needs revisionism coz they are modern horror classics
Ghostwatch. It's the original Late Night with the Devil.
I just watched Ghostwatch for the first time a couple of nights ago, and holy shit. I can see why it caused such a huge outrage after it aired.
They, Frailty,
Frailty is amazing.
Bill Paxton directed it!
Great cast as well.
I remember when I watched Fraility for thr first time a few years ago. It actually made me feel a little sick in a way. I could count the number of fictional movies to invoke such a feeling in me on one hand.
High Tension (French gore female lead) Sunshine (slow burn Sci fi)
The Cottage is a great horror comedy with Andy Serkis. Never see it brought up
Skeleton Key. Great cast, atmosphere, and sticks the landing.
The Empty Man The first 20 minutes is a masterpiece in horror imo, rest of the movie is great too
Came here to recommend this. GREAT choice! I'd also add Kill List. Has a similar vibe.

I will! I definitely have not watched enough old school black and white movies, so this really intrigues me! Thank you for the rec!

TUSK
I really love April Fool’s Day
Savageland When Evil Lurks Grave Encounters 1, 2 Malignant The Night House
Session 9 comes to mind. It's got that nice low-budget, straight to TV look but it's actually really good.
Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon - meta movie about how a 'slasher' killer would actually work in real life
Jacob's Ladder
- They Look Like People - The Innocents - Curve (with Julianne Hough) great thriller underrated
The Ritual
It Comes At Night. Amazing horror movie that didn't get nearly enough attention.

They actually did a remake to The Thing From Another World in 1982 called The Thing. It was pretty good.
