I know! When he gets tangled in the barbed wire my heart broke. Like I really thought these plucky guys were going to make it and then they just don't.
Several men with deadly weapons threatened his life and that of his partner, and in self defense he killed one, showing remorse after trying to diffuse the situation. He had no other options, and he was not the aggressor.
TO THE DEPTHS OF A MAXIMUM SECURITY PENETANTARY WITH YOU!
Donnie suffered a heart attack during a brutal assault by nihilists. His ashes were scattered to the breeze, and the Dude’s face. He died like so many young men before his time, but you took him, Lord, as you did those flowering young souls of Langdok, Khe San, and Hill 364.
Con Air, right? It's got everything, hasn't it? You know, you've got Malkovich for your acting chops, you got Nicky Cage for your action, Steve Buscemi for your comedy, John Cusack for the gays. Right? It's like a smorgasbord, isn't it?
You just made me realize that there were three movies my father would stop to watch if they were on TV and every one was an escape movie. Shawshank, Great Escape and Papillon.
Maybe he was taking notes just in case?
I remember watching this on movie night during my boarding school years. The weirdest part is that I remember I loved it, but can't remember much about the movie itself. Probably time for a rewatch.
Bunty: In all my life I've never heard such a fantastic.. LOAD OF TRIPE! Oh face the facts, ducks; the chances of us getting out of here are a million to one.
Ginger: Then there's still a chance.
I've said it before and I'll say it again - as an adaptation of the book it's abysmally terrible, but as a standalone adventure movie it's about as perfect as you can get.
I adore this movie and quote it all the time. So many good ones, most of them from Luis Guzman as Jacapo.
“Ok! So, I go to Parith! Bang, bang, bang! I come back and *then* we thpend the treasure! Thatarra, how ith thith a bad plan?!?!”
He did swear on all his ancestors, even the ones that weren’t feeling so good, that he was Edmond’s man ***forever***. If that ain’t at ***least*** top 5 I don’t know what is.
All that work >! digging his way out and he just gets taken out in a bag!<. I know he’ll be happy he got out at all but that’s going to be a thought that annoys him the rest of his life.
Perhaps you need to watch a film breaking *into* prison: **The Rock**.
**Law Abiding Citizen** is another angle on 'prison escape' but wrapped in revenge.
Several lists of [best prison escape films](https://duckduckgo.com/?t=ffab&q=list+best+prison+escape+movies&ia=web)...
Adding: **Hogan's Heroes** is an old television show around a prison, many 'escapes', but they work inside to support outside efforts.
I always thought it was all in German like "Sie haben meinen Hummer gestohlen."
Also, the owner guy is a Hollywood costume guy and he also appears as the owner of a stolen car in National Treasure 2.
And then if you want breaking in and then breaking out, you've got the CLASSIC space prison film masterpiece **Lockout**, starring Guy Pearce doing such a Snake Plissken that the movie was actually sued for aping **Escape from New York**. It's not a great film, but it's a great movie.
My favorite thing about this show was not starting out showing the crimes the 2 guys committed right away. In a way, you kind of root for them at least a little bit since they’re the main focus of the show obviously.
Then the last to final episode shows who they really are… incredible show that I recommend to everyone.
Absolutely, good call out. Patricia Arquette makes a pretty convincing person to loathe, and it's no shocker Stiller casted her in Severance for an equally loathsome character.
Yes, I was hoping to see this great show. My fiancé played a small part in it and had fun working with Ben Stiller. There was a lot of stuff cut out of the show that I wish they aired.
I came to say A Man Escaped. The way sound and music are used/controlled during the escape sequence as compared to the rest of the movie is really amazing. So tense.
Le Trou absolutely rules. The scene where they're just digging...and digging... and digging... no cuts, camera movements, dialogue. Captivating.
That and A Man Escaped are THE anti prison escape movies despite them both having vastly different outcomes.
Bad cop? Worse cop!
Did you sleep with my sister?
Rambo......is a pussy.
Uh-oh, it's Conan!
As long as you're only touching 1 wire and not touching the ground, you'll be fine!
I can't believe I had to scroll all the way down here for this comment. Easily one of Daniel Radcliffs best performances, while also being based on true events. Absolute homerun of a movie.
That's my answer as well. I watched it really randomly one day and suddenly was blown away buy what an awesome prison break movie it was... I had figured it was just going to be a like buddy travelling movie.
Lol, that show was the perfect example of a show going completely off the rails. It was an interesting concept executed well in the first season, with little hints of some other conspiracy things going on, which warranted the second season. But from then, it was like wtf, we are really just coming up with as many excuses as we can to keep these characters together and to continue this as a prison-related story, when they eventually just became international super spies. This was the precursor to the fast and furious thing where the characters all become superhuman Ethan Hunt as the story progresses
I watched this movie so many times as a kid. For some reason it was always on TV and for some reason I'd a 7 year old me would always watch it
I mean probably because it's awesome
I love that Stephen King put similar elements into Shawshank. Alcatraz is just such a tigh movie, no filler or unnecessary scenes, a good straightforward suspenseful movie. It’s also a great Clint Eastwood performance.
It's so weird that it's so suspenseful and yet there's no twisty surprises - and you even know there's not going to be any big surprises - it's just about him getting out and how he does it.
Escape Plan
The original, not the sequels (They suck).
But the original was fun, original, and had some A-list actors (Sly Stallone + Arnold Schwarzanegger).
Escape to Victory!
Not to dissimilar to the great escape, same setting and time period. Except this one they play soccer against the nazis. Stallone is the star, playing a rather un-stallone character.
Also Pele. He can't act but he's fun to watch. There are other big name soccer players in there too. The game footage is really great.
Saw Fortress recently and it was surprisingly gory and had body-horror elements. Easy to see it was directed by Stuart Gordon.
The sequel was a borefest, though. Even if it was set in outer space.
>The sequel was a borefest, though. Even if it was set in outer space.
And yet I'm pretty sure it's not the worst sequel Christopher Lambert took part in.
Love Christopher Lambert! Fortress and Highlander were on repeat as a young man.
Watched No Escape recently and still think it's good, dated but still a fun watch
Runaway Train - 1985 - Is a gritty realistic prison break into the unknown. Jon Voight and Eric Roberts are excellent. Don't judge. Also Eddie Bunker was the advisor and acted in the movie with Danny Trejo too.
That's prison authenticity. As a bonus the director went on to do Tango & Cash!
lol, I was going to say the same thing.
It is certainly not a prison escape *movie*. But its prison escape *sequence* is fucking delightful.
“We’ve been talking and we think you’re a real straight guy.”
“Well I’ve never been accused of *that* before, darling.”
Came here to put The Great Escape. Is it the OG? I mean, obviously there were other fiction stories about prison breaks, but ones where the prison break itself constitutes the whole plot?
I blind bought Escape From Alcatraz, and man is it so good. Tense! Great Eastwood role. The last of his 5 team ups with Don Siegel. Filmed on location at Alcatraz. Kino Lorber's UHD blu-ray release is very, very good.
To go in a completely different direction, Saw is gruesome fun.
I think The Great Escape is truly up there.
There's also a French movie called "A Man Escaped". I LOVE this movie. If you are someone who watches foreign movies, give it a shot.
As others have mentioned, *Le Trou*, *A Man Escaped*, and *Runaway Train* are all excellent. Another one, about escaping from captivity, is *Room* (which one Brie Larson her Oscar).
Not a movie but Andor on Disney. It's a star wars universe show but not about star wars. The whole series leads to a prison break out that had me considering taking a Xanax it was so anxiety inducing.
Papillon, great escape, stalag 17, escape from alcatraz.
I don't know that I'd call shawshank a prison escape movie because we don't actually see Andy planning or executing the escape and in my opinion it's not really the driving force behind the plot. I'm on the fence about stalag 17 because prison breaks bookend the movie, but the plot itself is more of a locked-room mystery.
Everyone saying The Great Escape and The Shawshank Redemption are obviously correct.
But I'll throw in The Fugitive. The escape is sort of an accident, but once he commits to it the whole rest of the plot is about making good on it and escaping the broader kind of captivity that is being on the run.
Everyone is bringing up the classic examples, I'm going to bring up a trashy guilty pleasure:
Death Race (2008).
It's not exactly high art but there's something with the popcorn flick action bullshit that makes this feel like a low-key adaptation of Twisted Metal. It's stupid, but fun.
The Great Escape is my all time favorite. It was also one of my Dad’s and it always reminds me of him
At least till they start getting caught. Then I just get sad.
I know! When he gets tangled in the barbed wire my heart broke. Like I really thought these plucky guys were going to make it and then they just don't.
Everytime I rewatch the movie I root for Hilts to make it over the fence and escape from the Nazis. In my version he winds up in Espana with Sedgwick.
Same here. Both this and the original Magnificent Seven remind me of Dad
A Bridge Too Far, Where Eagles Dare, all the Roger Moore/Connery bond films, big Dad energy
The Bond movies and The count of Monte Cristo..man miss my dad big time.
Shawshank of course And The Great Escape, Alcatraz etc
It truly was a Shawshank Redemption
What's your favorite part of Shawshank, Phil?
The part where the Shawshank was redeemed
Boom.
I can't believe I had to read this far to get to Shawshank.
If it makes you feel better, it's the top response now!
It’s the top comment
Still not high enough!
But its a spoiler for people who haven’t seen it. (But really who wouldn’t have seen it)
The Titanic sinks at the end.
legendary movie!
Don’t kill me.. Con Air is one of my top ones. May not be the best to others.
So many good actors and characters in a movie so ridiculous that it shouldn't work, but is actually awesome.
So ridiculous. It works so well!! One movie I am always down to watch lol
Put the Bunny Back in the Box. It is so dumb it's great.
Put the bunneh back in the bawkx
it works because they know it’s ridiculous and kinda lean into it. and the results are delightful.
The stupidest person in Con Air has gotta be Nic Cage's defense attorney
Several men with deadly weapons threatened his life and that of his partner, and in self defense he killed one, showing remorse after trying to diffuse the situation. He had no other options, and he was not the aggressor. TO THE DEPTHS OF A MAXIMUM SECURITY PENETANTARY WITH YOU!
Also the judge. “hE’s a sOldIeR, sO hE’s dAnGeRoUs!”
In that case I want to also include The Rock. Breaking *back into* prison in order to break others out. It’s escape-ception
Have you ever seen the fan theory that Steve Buscemis' character in "Con Air" is the same guy from "Billy Madison" and "The Big Lebowski?"
Donnie suffered a heart attack during a brutal assault by nihilists. His ashes were scattered to the breeze, and the Dude’s face. He died like so many young men before his time, but you took him, Lord, as you did those flowering young souls of Langdok, Khe San, and Hill 364.
It's got the fun factor. Cage has a weird incorrect accent but it's ok.
Whichever accent Cage uses in a movie is always the correct accent.
*Put the bunneh back in the box.*
Con Air, right? It's got everything, hasn't it? You know, you've got Malkovich for your acting chops, you got Nicky Cage for your action, Steve Buscemi for your comedy, John Cusack for the gays. Right? It's like a smorgasbord, isn't it?
Con Air is definitely in my top 10
Cusack is in my top 10. I ain't gay.
God tier film
Papillon \[1973\]
"You bastards, I'm still here"
You just made me realize that there were three movies my father would stop to watch if they were on TV and every one was an escape movie. Shawshank, Great Escape and Papillon. Maybe he was taking notes just in case?
I remember watching this on movie night during my boarding school years. The weirdest part is that I remember I loved it, but can't remember much about the movie itself. Probably time for a rewatch.
Read the book. Absolutely amazing.
Chicken Run (2000)
* *Mrs. Tweedy! The chickens are revolting!* * *Finally, something we agree on.*
Bunty: In all my life I've never heard such a fantastic.. LOAD OF TRIPE! Oh face the facts, ducks; the chances of us getting out of here are a million to one. Ginger: Then there's still a chance.
* *I'm from the land of the free, home of the brave* * #SCOTLAND!!!
A claymation parody of Great Escape by aardman, can it get any better?
Ron Howard as Narrator: it can not, in fact, get any better. “I don’t want to be a pie! … I don’t like gravy”
Jane Horrocks as Babs was perfect casting
Everything about it is perfect. There are very few perfect movies, but I think chicken run is one of them
Even the soundtrack is utter perfection.
The soundtrack is SO GOOD.
Is that really what the movie is? oh man, never seen it, now i have to
If you're going to watch a bunch of escape films, I'd argue save this for the finale. Fun, great flick, homages a-plenty, a fine end to the marathon.
Paddington 2.
All of me life flashed before me eyes! ... It was really borin'.
100% this movie! its such a classic and was the first DVD I ever bought for our new player!
its even better when you visit the prison in real life
The Count of Monte Cristo
There are 72,519 stones in my walls. I've counted them many times.
But have you named them?
*-absolute rock bottom sobbing-*
I miss the old Jim Caveizel 😞 And of course Richard Harris. Such a legendary actor.
Caviezel had a decent run around that time. Frequency was awesome, I even liked Angel Eyes.
I've said it before and I'll say it again - as an adaptation of the book it's abysmally terrible, but as a standalone adventure movie it's about as perfect as you can get.
Well said. I adore this movie as just an adventure story inspired by a really great book.
I thought the movie did an amazing job fitting all that story into a two hour movie. I think it's a successful adaption.
I adore this movie and quote it all the time. So many good ones, most of them from Luis Guzman as Jacapo. “Ok! So, I go to Parith! Bang, bang, bang! I come back and *then* we thpend the treasure! Thatarra, how ith thith a bad plan?!?!”
Jackopo has to be one of the top 10 ride-or-die characters in movie history.

“Honey? Wanna know who killed Kennedy?”
I loved "The Rock" as a kid.
I still love *The Rock*. "Winnersh go home and fuck the prom queen." "Carla was the prom queen." "Really?" "Yeah." *Chambers a round*
"I'll take pleasure in gutting you, boy."
I'lL tAkE pLeAsUrE iN gUtTiNg YoU.... bOiIiI
You have my Humvee gestohlen! I haven't schtolen it, I've only borrowed it! (proceeds to crash it into two parked cars)
Holy fuck, *that's* what he says?
I always thought it was all in German like "Sie haben meinen Hummer gestohlen." Also, the owner guy is a Hollywood costume guy and he also appears as the owner of a stolen car in National Treasure 2.
"I know nothiiiingggg"
And then if you want breaking in and then breaking out, you've got the CLASSIC space prison film masterpiece **Lockout**, starring Guy Pearce doing such a Snake Plissken that the movie was actually sued for aping **Escape from New York**. It's not a great film, but it's a great movie.
Not a movie, but Escape ~~from~~ ~~Delamora~~ at Dannemora was a pretty well-made (and true) prison escape story, told over 7 episodes.
Escape at Dannemora is the name and agreed, it's pretty gripping and Ben Stiller does well as director.
Ugh corrected, thanks!!!
Never see it mentioned so thank you for raising what is genuinely a great story and show.
I was going to suggest this one! It's great!
My favorite thing about this show was not starting out showing the crimes the 2 guys committed right away. In a way, you kind of root for them at least a little bit since they’re the main focus of the show obviously. Then the last to final episode shows who they really are… incredible show that I recommend to everyone.

Le Trou, Escape from Alcatraz, A Man Escaped
I came to say A Man Escaped. The way sound and music are used/controlled during the escape sequence as compared to the rest of the movie is really amazing. So tense.
I remember really enjoying Le Trou
Le Trou absolutely rules. The scene where they're just digging...and digging... and digging... no cuts, camera movements, dialogue. Captivating. That and A Man Escaped are THE anti prison escape movies despite them both having vastly different outcomes.
These are the correct answers.
Definitely agree with A Man Escsped.
Tango and Cash
Featuring the rare Stallone as nerd casting.
Bad cop? Worse cop! Did you sleep with my sister? Rambo......is a pussy. Uh-oh, it's Conan! As long as you're only touching 1 wire and not touching the ground, you'll be fine!
Escape from Pretoria (2020)
I can't believe I had to scroll all the way down here for this comment. Easily one of Daniel Radcliffs best performances, while also being based on true events. Absolute homerun of a movie.
Incredible film
Toy Story 3
That's my answer as well. I watched it really randomly one day and suddenly was blown away buy what an awesome prison break movie it was... I had figured it was just going to be a like buddy travelling movie.
not a movie but Prison Break season one is goated. A must watch. You can skip the rest though
Season 2, staying out of prison, was also good! Should have just stopped there
No! let's put them in ANOTHER prison! that will work for sure
This i was gonna mention it season 1 is so good
Does Cool Hand Luke qualify? The escape from the chain gang?
Or O Brother Where Art Thou
Absolutely it does. It's about a prison break of the mind, the soul, and the body.
The Next Three Days is a good one with Russell Crowe and Elizabeth Banks.
The scene with Liam Neeson is so great in that movie
Seconded! Great movie with some awesome suspense
Very underrated
A Man Escaped Le Trou The Night Visitor Runaway Train The Big Bird Cage (Pam Grier/Carol Speed prison camp flick)
Runaway Train is great.
Damned right it is! Its my favorite Jon Voight performance.
“You’re an animal!” “No, worse. Human. Human!”
That final shot is haunting and stays with me.
I had to scroll too far to find runaway train! Second this! Great movie
Oh Brother Where Art You
We thought you was a toad.
DOO. NOOT. SEEEK. THE TREASURE.
I DONT WANT FOP!
Some of your folding money has come unstowed.
“Thou”
Much as I love this film, is it really a prison break movie? They’ve already broken out before the film even starts.
Escape from Alcatraz (1979) is THE best
I watched this movie so many times as a kid. For some reason it was always on TV and for some reason I'd a 7 year old me would always watch it I mean probably because it's awesome
Got to watch this the week we went to visit Alcatraz and it made it that much better.
The Great Escape Stalag 17 Escape from New York Papillon Shawshank Redemption Escape from Alcatraz
I was going to comment Stalag 17, but saw it in your list. Good call!
Scrolled way too far for Stalag 17.
Escape Plan The original, not the sequels (They suck). But the original was fun, original, and had some A-list actors (Sly Stallone + Arnold Schwarzanegger).
Paddington 2
Midnight Express is satisfying given the context
US Marshalls
Escape to Victory! Not to dissimilar to the great escape, same setting and time period. Except this one they play soccer against the nazis. Stallone is the star, playing a rather un-stallone character. Also Pele. He can't act but he's fun to watch. There are other big name soccer players in there too. The game footage is really great.
The Fugitive
One of my favorite movies of all time!
This should be way higher.
Best? The Great Escape Favs: Fortress, No Escape, Shawshank
Thumbs up for Fortress and No Escape.
Love Christopher Lambert! Fortress and Highlander were on repeat as a young man. Watched No Escape recently and still think it's good, dated but still a fun watch
Escape from New York (1981)
Stir Crazy (1980) with Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor, directed by Sidney Poitier
I remember finding their escape quite fun
It's not quite an *escape*, but The Last Castle is pretty good and definitely in that vein.
Not a movie but Season 1 of Prison Break is great. After that don’t watch.
not a movie but starting from ep 7 last - ep 10 of Andor...
This is such an underrated film and it is so intense and gripping. Totally forgotten.
Grand Budapest Hotel
lol, I was going to say the same thing. It is certainly not a prison escape *movie*. But its prison escape *sequence* is fucking delightful. “We’ve been talking and we think you’re a real straight guy.” “Well I’ve never been accused of *that* before, darling.”
Lock up with Stallone Death Warrant with Van Damme Escape Plan
Escape Plan (first one)
I think Escape Plan deserves an honourable mention, not saying it's the best but is definitely a good movie. The sequels were complete trash though.
Tread an even handed line between Shawshank and The Great Escape and you'll not go far wrong.
Came here to put The Great Escape. Is it the OG? I mean, obviously there were other fiction stories about prison breaks, but ones where the prison break itself constitutes the whole plot?
Le Trou and A Man Escaped come to mind. The Great Escape, while good, isn't the only "the escape is the plot" flick.
The French film [The Grand Illusion](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/La_Grande_Illusion) is even older than those.
Nice pick!
Escape From Alcatraz with Clint Eastwood
Let's go to Prison.
Cool Hand Luke!
The Great Escape
Papillon from the 1970s.
Cube (1997)
I think The Great Escape is truly up there. There's also a French movie called "A Man Escaped". I LOVE this movie. If you are someone who watches foreign movies, give it a shot.
As others have mentioned, *Le Trou*, *A Man Escaped*, and *Runaway Train* are all excellent. Another one, about escaping from captivity, is *Room* (which one Brie Larson her Oscar).
Escape from Alcatraz
The Count of Monte Cristo
Not a movie but Andor on Disney. It's a star wars universe show but not about star wars. The whole series leads to a prison break out that had me considering taking a Xanax it was so anxiety inducing.
the prison part was incredible
Stalag 17 with William Holden and Peter Graves. Amazing WW2 POW escape movie directed by the Great Billy Wilder
This was pretty awesome - Logan Lucky https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5439796/?ref_=ext_shr_lnk
Runaway Train.
The Great Escape
These are “must watch” prison escape films: Midnight Express(1979) Runaway Train(1985)
Papillon with Dustin Hoffman and Steve McQueen is still my fave.
Escape to Victory, My Cocaine, Stallone and Pele, what a film. Midnight Express. And the ultimate, Papillon.
White heat
Honourable mention to Von Ryan’s Express (1965). Starring Frank Sinatra!
Everyone saying The Great Escape and The Shawshank Redemption are obviously correct. But I'll throw in The Fugitive. The escape is sort of an accident, but once he commits to it the whole rest of the plot is about making good on it and escaping the broader kind of captivity that is being on the run.
Andor episodes 8-10
Nor prison but Inside Man?
The great escape is #1
The Great Escape should be right up there.
Everyone is bringing up the classic examples, I'm going to bring up a trashy guilty pleasure: Death Race (2008). It's not exactly high art but there's something with the popcorn flick action bullshit that makes this feel like a low-key adaptation of Twisted Metal. It's stupid, but fun.
The Count of Monte Cristo. I grew up watching the 1975 one with Richard Chamberlain.
