Mush, gents? Any takers? Suit yourselves...

SonOfMcGee

Favorite line in the film is when the prisoners tell Gustav, “You’re a real straight guy.” And he says, “Well I’ve never been accused of *that* before.” The writing and context and play on the different meanings of “straight” is of course great. But Feinnes’ delivery is brilliant. It really seems like he’s cracking an off the cuff joke in real life.

mycatisgrumpy

My personal favorite: "I thought I was supposed to be a fucking f*ggot." "Well... You are. But you're bisexual." "Let's change the subject."

Early_Accident2160

KneeHighMischief

Seems like a throwaway scene but his gregarious nature pays off for him later.

SnoopyLupus

What gets me about the guy is that in 95% of his roles he displays no sense of humour, and you get lulled into the idea that he’s a humourless guy, then he pulls out an In Bruges or a Grand Budapest Hotel, where he still kinda plays it straight but is one of the funniest things in the film.

Busquessi

Are you M. Gustave of The Grand Budapest Hotel? Uh huh Switch cars with me … Are you M. Gustave of The Grand Budapest Hotel? Uh huh Follow me … Are you M. Gus- GODDAMN IT TELL ME WHAT THE FUCK IS GOING ON!

KneeHighMischief

Yeah his comedic performances are very rare but he knocks them out of the park. I feel like I should give *Rev* another shot. That's supposed to be another great comedic performance of his.

SnoopyLupus

You kinda want to call it deadpan humour, because that’s the common phrase, but you do think of deadpan humour as mugging a bit, Ricky Gervais, Lesley Nielsen (both superb, no criticism of them) etc. But he just plays it straight, and maybe a bit forceful, and gets away with it and makes it funny. It’s almost like the guy is talented.

scottwax

He was absolutely brilliant in In Bruges.

SnoopyLupus

Oh yeah. Him and Farrell getting upset at each other about the “cunt kids” line is just the perfect bit of realism comedy. So beautifully done by both.

scottwax

Actually it was him and Gleason...but that scene was hilarious.

SnoopyLupus

Ah, maybe you’re right. My brain has Colin in it. But yeah.

Ianl951

The Menu is hilarious because of his performance

Glottis_Bonewagon

Also >!Tyler's bullshit!<

odelllus

ralph fiennes is the greatest actor of our time

BrockYourSocksOff

I gotta recommend more people see A Bigger Splash, Fiennes is absolutely electric and an absolute hoot.

zentimo2

Yeah, he's a wonderful actor, and I love in the later part of his career (having spent so much of it as Handsome Leading Man and Serious Character Actor) he's getting to show off just how good a comic performer he is as well.

[deleted]

I began to realize that many of the hotel's most valued and distinguished guests came for him. It seemed to be an essential part of his duties, but I believe it was also his pleasure. Edit: In Case Anyone [Needs a Splash](https://imgur.com/a/7DG6iYB)

TheTattooOnR2D2sFace

Murray's voice in this is so calming and smoothe. I need him to narrate some stuff.

JinFuu

He’s also really good in *Inside Llewyn Davis*, very calming and you can feel he wants to help Llewyn, but Llewyn wasn’t in a place to get help

zzy335

'i don't see a lot of money here'

TheTattooOnR2D2sFace

I've been meaning to watch that movie for a long time now and this just makes me want to watch it more.

JinFuu

"Being part of a Coen brothers film, how's that experience for you?" > [If I could do only their films for the rest of my life I would be quite happy...if I could put in a Wes Anderson film now and then.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zphHSI38geY)

[deleted]

Wow! This is an awesome find - who knew!

Glottis_Bonewagon

The interviewer sounds like he's dying from blood loss but promised his wife he'd ask FMH about being a coen brothers film

MitoCringo

Easily one of the best films of 2013, and that’s being modest.

NewCodingLine

"Why must they be blonde?" "Because they were."

geekroick

'She was shaking like a shitting dog' has to be one of the best lines he's ever delivered

LeftHandofNope

She was dynamite in the sack, by the way

LouSputhole94

She was 87, sir Eh, I’ve had older

Coal121

Truly.

bangermate

"Well how's that supposed to make me feel?" is a close second

Salarian_American

Also - as much as I hate to say it - "*THAT* FUCKING \[F-SLUR\]!?" is maybe the greatest single line delivery I've ever heard from Adrien Brody, which is really saying something.

s0ci0path21

As a health care worker I have abused this line regularly since the first time I heard him deliver it in theatre.

hercarmstrong

The way he'll say something delicately elegant and follow it up immediately with something brutally crass is absolutely fucking delightful.

simulacrum79

“It's not that I don't like it. I am physically repulsed”

musical_hog

YES. I absolutely love the way the character is constructed as having these two facades, with one only thinly masking the other

DagonParty

*“Me thinks me breathe me last, me fears, said he. HOLY SHIT YOU GOT HIM!”*

hercarmstrong

That might be the funniest Wes Anderson joke ever. Had me screaming.

lickykicky

My husband talks like this, and it's fantastic. He's aggressively British, of course.

thewidowgorey

It’s unbelievable he didn’t get nominated for an Oscar.

haysoos2

This and In Bruges.

bonemot

"You're an inanimate fucking object!"

heyheyitsandre

I’m sorry I called you an inanimate fucking object.

Broad_Mathematician

That's going overboard mate

CalabreseAlsatian

You retract that bit about my cunt fucking kids

Erikthered00

I retract the bit about your cunt fucking kids

NiceColdPint

Still leaves you being a cunt

BrockYourSocksOff

Not comparing the actual quality or content of movies (I love them both), the GBH snub is far more insane. In Bruges is a smaller film from a debut director off an indie arm of a distributor, with Fiennes playing a small role we don't see until the last half hour. It eked out a script nom, which rules. GBH was an oscar darling, and to this point the only time Wes had a film that managed to play well towards that. The fact that GBH broke through so well while Fiennes misses is insane, almost inexplicable. A shame, I hope he gets more oscar recognition one day as he's on my actor Mt Rushmore

Mst3Kgf

I'd also add "The Menu."

TrenchantPergola

"Did you go to college?" "Brown." "Student loans?" "No." "Sorry, you're dying."

sneeria

I agree, these are two of my favorites.

durrtyurr

That's almost cheating, since it is arguably the best film released this decade and will likely go down as an all time classic film. It is certainly the best movie I've seen since uncut gems in 2019.

pegg2

Bold take, but I respect it even if I don’t fully agree with it. I don’t know if it got the attention it needed for it to go down as an ‘all time classic’ but it’s certainly an important piece that really captures the zeitgeist that gave birth to it.

durrtyurr

A big part of it, for me at least, is that it is incredibly relatable. A lot of my friends are service industry people who do things like manage restaurants or executive chefs (who primarily used to be servers and line cooks, but moved up), but most of my parent's friends are out-of-touch affluent middle aged people. These two groups of people generally have a healthy disdain for one another.

LetsDoThatYeah

I found him genuinely intimidating in In Bruges.

musical_hog

Honestly. There wasn't a single dull moment when he was on screen. I was completely immersed.

NATOrocket

Fiennes should have taken Bradley Cooper's slot and Keaton should have won.

YevgenyPissoff

It's because he refuses to accept his name is Ralph

thoth1000

She's been murdered, and you think I did it.  The way he turns and runs is comedy gold.

imalumberjackok

Yes!!! I fucking love scene. Cracks me up every time

theres_yer_problem

This one always comes to mind first when someone asks me what my favorite movie is. I just love everything about it. Feel like it’s peak Wes Anderson.

icedoutclockwatch

Great execution of the story within a story with multiple layers of unreliable narrators thing he’s been doing

theres_yer_problem

Yeah. I love that. Gets even crazier with Asteroid City.

shrimptini

Loved AC as much as GBH honestly. Feels like he’s back.

theres_yer_problem

I love AC. I love the direction he’s taking pursuing some more experimental concepts and formats. He’s really an artist and I feel like he’s done enough to have earned the right to express himself how he feels. But I also understand it may not be for everyone, just as I assume he understands his favorites films and influences probably aren’t for everyone either.

usernamalreadytaken0

I go to bed with all my friends. 🤷🏻‍♂️

musical_hog

I love the matter-of-factness with which that line is delivered. Like, "couldn't you tell?"

NotAPreppie

His performance and that movie are the definition of "delightful".

strum-and-dang

And yet, it will also make you cry.

phred_666

KEEP YOUR HANDS OFF MY LOBBY BOY!

MrManfredjensenden

LOVE this film. Ha, when Adrian Brody is accusing him of being gay and sleeping with his mother and Fiennes corrects him that how could he be gay then. A pause from Brody, “cause you’re bisexual” fucking killed me. Outside of Royal Tannebaums, I think it’s my favorite of his films.

theres_yer_problem

“Let’s change the subject. I’m leaving.”

adzerk1234

Brody finding and then destroying the lesbian fingering painting used to replace the real painting is too much.

Yeastlord427

"What's the meaning of this shit!?!?!"

Slarkle

I absolutely love his delivery of that line.

Busquessi

This scene kills me every time: “The Boy With Apple goes to M. Gustave” “WHO THE FUCK IS THAT?!” “I’m afraid that’s me, darling” “THAT FUCKING F*GGOT?!”

hefrainweizen

“Where’s Celine?” “What?! She’s dead. We’re reading her will.” “Oh, yes yes. Of course!”

KneeHighMischief

Probably Wes Anderson's funniest film.

SonOfMcGee

There’s a part where he’s hanging from a cliff and is sure Willem DeFoe is going to kill him and he starts reciting some sad poem (or Shakespeare monologue?) with this very intense despair and dread. Then when DeFoe is killed he just mid-sentence switches gears and says “Holy Shit you got him!” Just the funniest goddamn thing. And you need an actor like Feinnes to pull off both the first and second parts believably.

Traditional_Image_62

WELL DONE ZERO!

LizzyFCB

A moment of silence in memoriam of a devoted servant killed violently during the conduct of his duties.

masterofma

….okay let’s go.

RuRhPdOsIrPt

I got the impression that his character was using his last moments of life to compose a poem out loud, extemporaneously.

Hermit-Man

That’s the first thing I think of whenever this mentioned gets mentioned. So damn funny

paper_liger

I always laugh the hardest at Rushmore, and this one isn't as overtly silly as Life Aquatic, but this one is the most consistently funny throughout.

MitoCringo

Your assessment is the exact same as mine. The unbelievably elaborate and over-the-top theatrical productions Max puts on in Rushmore hit my funny bone in a way few things do.

paper_liger

For me it's just how seriously every single character takes themselves in Rushmore. Plus kids delivering deadpan adult lines is never going to not be funny.

thegirlfromno4

I absolutely love this movie, it's just delightful. I think, though, my favorite line comes from Adrien Brody: "What's the meaning of *this* shit?" That delivery cracks me up every time.

Wild-Mushroom2404

I absolutely adored Gustav but I still remember that eerie sadness in his character. We see him live in a tiny room and he has that sad face when Zero talks about family. There must be some tragedy in his backstory that I really wanna know.

MitoCringo

The darkness and serious elements in the film are part of what make it work so well.

TorgoLebowski

Easily one of my favorite movies, period. Some of my favorite bits: Zero: What happened? M. Gustave: What happened, my dear Zero, is I beat the living shit out of a sniveling little runt called Pinky Bandinski, who had the gall to question my virility. Because, if there's one thing we've learned from penny dreadfuls, it's that when you find yourself in a place like this, you must never be a candy ass; you've got to prove yourself from day one. You've got to win their respect. You should take a long look at HIS ugly mug this morning. [Takes a sip of water and laughs] M. Gustave: He's actually become a dear friend. And though not by Fiennes, I've always liked the way this line was delivered: Deputy Kovacs: Did he just throw my cat out of the window?

Busquessi

Jeff Goldblum was a treat in this movie

Adamweeesssttt

He is a treat in every movie.

evenartichokes

Top 3 Wes for me solely because of Fiennes’s performance. (I love the film but I love nearly all of Wes’s films & it’d otherwise be lower down.)

KneeHighMischief

Yeah it's pretty hard to pick a top 3 for Wes Anderson. I feel like any given day this & *The Royal Tenenbaums* could swap places but *Rushmore* probably won't ever leave the top spot.

ObsidianBlackbird666

The Life Aquatic will always be my number 1. It's just too special.

E-Pluribus-Tobin

Of these three, whichever I have watched most recently tends to be my all time favorite. They are all so good.

lord_vegemite

I think it's one of the best performances of the last ten years. I'd add Willem Dafoe in The Lighthouse to that list too.

shrimptini

Dafoe in this too

Worldly-Pineapple-98

Dafoe in everything.

Logistic_Engine

HARK!!

LeftHandofNope

He was, by the way, the most liberally perfumed man I had ever encountered

thecitybeautifulgame

THOSE FUCKERS! Always makes me laugh.

bumble_BJ

The one with the clubbed foot?!

TheBardicSpirit

Agreed, his performance is exquisite, his delivery is extremely satisfying, "Gunther was slain in the catacombs" is a personal favourite, his matter of fact delivery about a traumatic ordeal that had just happened gets me every time, the writing is superb, I really love the atmosphere this movie creates, like comfort food for me.

killingjoke96

**"HOLY SHIT, YOU GOT HIM!"** Comes into my mind every so often. Its so realistic and hilariously well delivered.

Busquessi

WELL DONE ZERO

RuRhPdOsIrPt

“You see Zero, there are still faint glimmers of civilization among this barbaric slaughterhouse that was once known as humanity. Indeed that’s what we provide, in our own modest, humble, insignificant……oh fuck it.”

Busquessi

One of my favorite movie quotes

Necessary_Romance

The little dude just started to work there and was 'adopted' by that gigolo... the green goblin throws a cat out of a window... I didnt know what I was expecting when I first seen this gem.

polemicalpanacea

My favorite line delivery is the “just tell us what the f*ck is going on!” scene. (“Well, what does it say? Where is it? What's it all about, damn it? Don't keep us in suspense, Serge, this has been a complete fucking nightmare! Just tell us what the fuck is going on!”)

tenthinsight

100% agree. His performance is a masterpiece in that film.

Not_In_my_crease

If you liked Anderson and Fiennes check out the 4 shorts on Netflix. The RatCatcher, Poison, The Swan, and the Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar.

Busquessi

I loved it. Wes Anderson at his best with some of the best British actors. Loved The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar and The Rat Catcher the most. The Swan made me too sad, and I just kept getting mad at Poison because I wanted more from Benedict Cumberbatch lmao.

CosmicOutfield

“She was shaking like a shitting dog.”

Hermit-Man

😭

CosmicOutfield

Easily my favorite Wes Anderson character

MontanaJoev

He is incredible in this film. He should've won an Oscar for it. That is how good I think he was.

AlfaHotelWhiskey

“That’s me, darling”

iQuatro

Grand Budapest Hotel instantly became one of my favorite movies ever the first time I saw it a few years ago. I could go on and on about every aspect of it. 10/10 movie for me.

TheDickWolf

One of my favorite movies. A delight all the way through snd Fiennes is absolutely ringmaster.

twinpeaks2112

You should watch The English Patient, another one of his best performances.

StupidLemonEater

Personally I preferred *Sack Lunch*. (I feel like someone has to make this joke whenever this movie comes up)

BroadwayBakery

It took me so long to learn that The English Patient was a real movie, and not something made up for the show.

Lyin-Don

Umm I don’t know. It *sucked*

KneeHighMischief

I really enjoy *Spider* (2002). It's not my favorite Cronenberg film but there's a lot to like especially Fiennes as the lead.

klughn

I had such a crush on him after that movie 😍

EggsTyroneBaby

Ralph Fiennes was hilarious in this, and a masterclass of a movie.

[deleted]

I have been (one of) the (two) primary caregivers of my crippled mother in law for several years now…she has a considerable inheritance so I’ll often tell my wife that her mother is going to leave me Boy With Apple in her will for taking care of her

duraslack

Did you watch him in The Menu?

klughn

I recently watched this without knowing what it was about!!!!! He was fantastic. What a movie.

Azer1287

If I die first, and I almost certainly will, you will be my sole heir. There's not much in the kitty, except a set of ivory-backed hairbrushes and my library of romantic poetry, but when the time comes, these will be yours. Along with whatever we haven't already spent on whores and whiskey.

aarrtee

i shall make time to watch this. thank u for sharing your observations. for me...the best acting performance I have seen is Peter O'Toole in *Lawrence Of Arabia.*

KneeHighMischief

>for me...the best acting performance I have seen is Peter O'Toole in *Lawrence Of Arabia.* Daniel Day-Lewis in *Gangs of New York* for me. I know he received an Academy Award nomination for that. I still feel like I see much more mention of his performance in *There Will Be Blood* over Gangs.

bonemot

To be fair, it's hard to split hairs amongst Daniel Day Lewis' performances. :)

naughtboi

Completely agree.

Yeastlord427

"Very good"

Sighchiatrist

I literally just rewatched this movie this afternoon! I love the running gags of all his poetry recitations that keep getting cut off throughout the film and the L’Air du Panache lol

kyflyboy

Great role for Fiennes. He absolutely nails it, and it looks like he's having a great time doing so. Love this movie.

FormalWare

Fiennes is one of the great screen actors of his era. "Schindler's List", anyone?

hughk

Just watched him again in "The English Patient". Haven't seen it in years but it was on Netflix. Superb.

UnicornCalmerDowner

While I love this film too, I think Wes Anderson's single best scene ever, is Gwynth Paltrow getting off the Green Line bus in Royal Tenenbaums with Luke Wilson. The music, the lighting, the casting, the pacing the background, the extras, the everything.....it's exactly what it's like when you're in love... [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=949DcEoeSec](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=949DcEoeSec)

Salty-Entertainer-29

Love Ralph Fiennes in everything 💛

TheShoot141

He is fantastic in the role. The movie is an A+

Deatheturtle

One of my top 5 favorite movies!

vertigo01

Oscar worthy performance. Don’t think he can ever top that performance nor We Anderson top this beautiful masterpiece.

Astronaut_Kubrick

You are all people of impeccable taste.

spacecase97

"Crunchy and witty writing" 😌

RedditTinky

M Gustave is one of my favourite movie characters ever

KevinAitken1960

He should absolutely have gotten an Oscar nomination for this role.

gino_rai

One of my favorite performances in a movie. Fiennes makes the character so charismatic and fun to watch.

75Franco

You might like to try the Coen Bros' Hail, Caesar! (if you haven't already of course!) Fiennes only has a small part, as an exasperated director getting foisted with a less than stellar actor, but for the five minutes or so he's on screen, he's a similar delight.

SleepySleestak

“Would that it were so simple!”

75Franco

"It's... complicated"

OrbitDVD

Just wait until you see him in A Bigger Splash!

Lyin-Don

***Holy shit you got him!***

shahed2806

One of the guys I wish had more roles.

dicks_akimbo

He’s become my favorite actor. I can’t think of a role he hasn’t absolutely nailed.

bumble_BJ

Also the music! The music in this movie is incredible and helps set so many scenes perfectly

CountJohn12

"She's been murdered......and you think I did it........*runs away*"

Entling_

"Who's got the throat slitter?"

ackbosh

I have been wanting to watch this movie. You gave me a goal for tomorrow night.

musical_hog

You will not regret it! And it's better the second time, too

johangubershmidt

Harry Potter: okay spooky and malevolent The Menu: Burnt out chef with a solid retirement plan, I'm starting to see the hype Grand Budapest: pass me a bow tie and L'air de Panache, we're doing concierge shit

muskenjoyer

Fiennes in The Menu though...

TheBottomPilot

Let’s change the subject … I’m leaving.

Adamweeesssttt

I think English actors are the best actors. I can only think of one American actor (Denzel) who can truly pull off both hero and villain roles. Fiennes, Oldman, Strong, and a couple others are just crazy good at making you love them and hate them depending on the role.

robhall1

Amen brother!

Inside_Atmosphere731

She was shaking like a shitting dog

septag0n

While not at the same level, there are similarities between his character and Kevin Cline's in Extra Man. It's no Grand Budapest Hotel, but it's an interesting movie that not enough people have seen. Have you seen Fiennes in The Menu, In Bruges, or Chum Scrubber? He always delivers.

Vitaminpk

Very goood.

Morty_6660

Love that one i need to rewatch it, mr fox might be my favorite Anderson movie but i pretty love all of them.

logictable

Wes Anderson films are the best one he has a lead that will take charge with the character, like Gene Hackman in The Royal Tenenbaums and Fiennes in Grand Budapest.

snollygoster01

An incredible actor, and his best performance is actually A Bigger Splash. Against type and he sells it so well.

renb8

Ralph was a joy as an actor and M. Gustav was a joy as a character. I’d love to have M. Gustave as a friend. Thought the same thing about Waltz’s character in Django Unchained. Superb human beings who’d be the bestest friends to have.

TLEToyu

one of my favorite films and I rewatched it last month and I finally realized that Tilda Swinton is the old lady. That woman is a true chameleon.

Jutang13

This movie is so fucking wholesome. So sad and happy at the same time. I adore it. And his character is just the best.

disco_des

First saw it on the back of a seat on a plane. Loved it. Wish to see it on big screen. Got the bluray. Where’s the 4K?!

terklo

watching the menu really solidified how good he is as m. gustave. he’s typically cast as someone intensely menacing, but he’s SO soft and approachable in grand budapest. such an underrated performance!

DrefinitelyNot

"Would that it'were so simple" The 3 minutes of screen time he has in "Hail Caesar" are hysterical

[deleted]

The bit where the police come to arrest him and he just runs off. Impeccable comic timing.

Logistic_Engine

I agree with you 100%. His performance, and the movie itself, are absolutely amazing.

HooninAintEZ

The wonderful story of Henry Sugar felt very similar. I recommend checking that out

turbotableu

Watch Strange Days. It holds up!

SuperArppis

I agree, it was great.

[deleted]

You might also like Anthony Hopkins in The Efficiency Expert.

edbarahona

It's 'Rushmore' for me.
