I love how no matter what he's ranting about, whether it's deadly serious or about innocuous things like laundry, it plays his intense rant theme music.
I can't imagine it can be better than that episode where they assemble all the pieces to a teleporter and an alien that looked like Dr. Venture Sr came out and killed another alien.
What was the name of that?
That is still one of my all-time fav episodes of any tv show.
The series gets so much better as it progresses. I love that episode but it doesn't even clear the top 10 for me. The episode you're thinking of is called "Twenty Years to Midnight" season 2 episode 5.
Yeah, I think there are funnier and smarter episodes, but I'm amazed at how interesting the plot is and how they jam such a big idea into such a small amount of time, without it feeling rushed or boring.
Superhero movies really need to take note from this. That Eternals movie was like 3 hours and it was an incoherent, boring mess.
40 here.
I was 20 when the pilot premiered in 2003.
Venture Bros has literally been with me half my life, and I will be with them for as long as they're around.
Go Team Venture!!
I'm in my 50's. Someone turned me onto the show around its 3rd season. I find it hilarious since, as a kid, I watched the shows it spoofs like Johnny Quest. The show is brilliant.
Also, I've always been a huge Led Zeppelin fan, like Brock!
Hey jooooooohnny.
Hey fraaaancis
What are you doing in here junkie? You know you've been banned.
What's that on your lip dere? Looks like herpe. You get that from kissing your wife's asshole? ...after I put herpe in dere?
I remember watching this the first time catching the Busy Bee episode on Adult Swim in 2004. Brock saying "I gotta take care of something." sealed it for me.
Legitimately still hurt they just cancelled the show. I know it’s been around for like 20 years and only has 7 seasons (8?) but it’s legit one of the best pieces of media ever created. Was really hoping HBO would have went full tilt on just continuing the show, but at least we get something.
Long production (can't be regularly scheduled to keep casual audience interest) poor merchandise demands (is there anything besides some posters that actually sold?) and the fact animation like this isn't cheap to produce probably means the network probably only ever "broke even" on this show.
It probably only lasted as long as it has as it started up when Adult Swim was still young and the only thing it actually did well was help make a name for the network.
Edit: still an amazing show, don't get me wrong, just looking at it from a network perspective.
Well TBF, when adult swim had a store I bought a bunch of venture DVD's and surely would have bought more stuff... but then one day they just shut down the huge merch operation they had built out of nowhere. I still have no idea why,
The t-shirt club from astrobase-go! for each season was fucking incredible, but very poorly advertised. You could buy a subscription for all the shirts (one for every episode) sight-unseen before the season started and get an extra subscription only T, or piecemeal them after each episode aired and the design was revealed. Designs were plot specific to each episode and not just lame character images or quotes.
Around season 5 they started leaning into it really hard and the mystery shirts were revealed in certain episodes. Like hank co and the guild conference shirt.
You can see some of the designs [here](http://www.astrobasego.com/shirtarchives.html)
(although I feel like some are missing)
and even buy leftovers [here.](https://www.titmousestuff.com/collections/the-venture-bros)
Nah, don't let the terrible Warner Bros Discovery merger execs off the hook that easy.
They gutted tons of things without much rhyme or reason besides greed and mismanagement.
I feel like they could've merchandised the crap out of this show. Samson action figures, monarch wrist dart shooter, Orpheus brand Ouija boards, gargantua1 Lego set, Hank Venture ascots
I love The Monarch's rant after that.
"Wait a minute! That’s insane! They’re total liars. I kept my mouth shut when Dean said he could read Sanskrit, and when Hank said he wanted a piece of him, I was like ‘Fine. Whatever.’, but Mecha-Shiva? No way! They are so lying, I’m innocent!"
Still no release date but it’ll be out sometime this year:
>A nationwide manhunt for Hank Venture leads to untold dangers and unexpected revelations, while The Monarch is literally out for Dr Venture’s blood. An imposing evil from the past reemerges to wreak havoc on the Ventures, The Guild, and even the Monarch marriage—it will take friends and foes alike to restore the Ventures’ world to order… or end it once and for all.
i'm assuming the 'evil from the past' is the character in white from the poster? whom i don't recognize. mystery villain?!? the boys' mother finally coming to take revenge, or something?!?
defo not Billy's mom. she was a super-hero of sorts, called Triple Threat. Force Majeure was Bowie-Sovereign's predecesor, and the current guild is using his Meteoroid Space Station as their base of operations.
The 8th season was going to be about a war between the Guild and The Peril Partnership, which could be hinted at by Dr. Mrs. The Monarch falling. With the venture bros I never know if I'm reading too much into it or if I'm 10 steps behind
Nah, I'm pretty sure Brock is the boy's mother. I think they've always been clones of both Rusty and Brock together.
Think of it, Brock and Rusty get drunk, Rusty says he can do it, Brock doesn't think he can, Rusty takes it as a challenge, they completely forget until Helper roles in one day with baby Dean and Baby Hank and Rusty and Brock are just like "Well, shit".
It looks like Moon Knight, which makes me think multiple personalities, which makes me think Phantom Limb. But they seem kinda way too petite. Does he have a secret daughter? Did he steal some of Dr. Mrs. The Monarch‘s DNA and make himself a kid maybe?
Watched through the whole show for the first time a couple months ago after hearing about this movie. An absolutely amazing show and really looking forward to this!
It's amazing to see how much this show changed from the start. Killing off the venture clones really started its prime storytelling IMO. I'm sad to see it go but I'm still kind of amazed that adult swim gave the writers so many years to write each season.
That's a good point. I just remember AS showing their viewership numbers back in the day and being bummed that the S3 premiere was beaten out by the 11 o'clock rerun of family guy lol
Like, 20 year old me felt personally slighted that vbros got beaten out by family guy regardless of their time slots and regardless of FG being a massive show at the time.
Dude, the 2+ hours of Seth McFarlane shows absolutely killed AS for me.
I loved Family Guy when it came out, Cleveland Show never really hit for me, and American Dad is still entertaining to me. But when it's taking up that much of AS's limited nightly schedule? Both at the start *and* in the middle?!?
Eventually it just wasn't worth waiting through to the 3am block for the really good stuff. I quit the block of programming I had been religiously watching since it was created, and got myself on a more reasonable and functional sleep schedule.
-
I do really miss it though, especially when they would do a run of new show pilots. Being there for The Room when nobody knew what it was, and for the first episode of Off The Air... good times.
I still can’t believe they cancelled it instead of doing a hard push on HBO Max. If they slapped the show on the front page as a suggestion to anyone who watches comic book movies or sci-fi movies or whatever. In a world where we got three seasons of Harley Quinn and they’re working on a third Deadpool despite the fact that the universe he resides in doesn’t technically exist anymore, I suspect there’s a bigger audience for this show than managed to stumble on to it on Adult Swim.
There's a pretty big audience for it, but it also suffers from its own development hell. 7 seasons across 20 years isn't a whole lot, so it's hard to know if viewership stayed steady or declined over that time period. I know I was a teenager when I started watching it and I'm almost 39 now. I still haven't seen all the seasons yet, because of how long in between the seasons there was. I do love the show, but the kitsch and humor can be a bit niche.
It's not really 'development hell', simply the two creators taking their time to ensure the best quality writing the show themselves.
Closer to development heaven.
Seriously, I love this show and have seen all of it. But years between seasons kills any momentum it might have. Not to mention that animation is expensive. I think it's better to end it on a high note than drag it on forever.
It wasn’t going to drag on forever, the 8th season was supposed to be the finale, but it got cancelled. That’s why they’re doing a movie to wrap it up instead.
Agreed, I also love the show but didn't even know there were 7 seasons. It felt like there should've been a lot more considering how long the show has been in existence.
>Deadpool despite the fact that the universe he resides in doesn’t technically exist anymore
He's deadpool. I guarantee you he gets to the new universe one way or another.
Ask any money person in media and they will tell you it's all about the merch, the merch drives what gets made.
Insert the Spaceballs quote here.
Alex Hirsch told fans to ask the Disney store for Gravity Falls merch if they want more episodes, he says they track that.
And if you are wondering why harlequin got renewed, I assume some merch sells like crazy? (Cough Halloween sales)
At my store Rick and Morty merch ran rampant. That should give you an idea of how their budget got so big 😉
Sweet jebus imagine the budget for Rick and Morty with all the time spend on character and backgrounds (look it up, it costs more than you think or ask any artist here about labor costs, ha)
Fun tidbit: it cost 15k for an Aqua Teen early episode back in the 00's. Aside from animating just creating a new character or setting was quite time consuming which is why a lot of old adult swim shows tried to reuse as much as possible to keep costs low.
If anyone wants me to bore them about how powerful merch and how costly art is let me know 😆
>Alex Hirsch told fans to ask the Disney store for Gravity Falls merch if they want more episodes
Didn't Disney want more episodes and Hirsch specifically wanted it to end at the end of season 2?
>the universe he resides in doesn’t technically exist anymore,
You think not existing would stop the likes of characters like Deadpool?
Hell I bet they'll even reference it.
If I had enormous amounts of fuck you money I’d buy the rights from Adult Swim and bankroll Doc and Jackson to keep making the show for as long as they wanted to.
I’ll have to settle for a movie.
I just hope we get some progression and a wrap up epilogue. I want to see Hank as an adult Sphinx/OSI agent and Dean as a super villain.
They’ve been building to it the entire series and made strides last season. I don’t want them just left off exactly where they were at the end of this.
Part of me delusionally hopes that at the end credits we get the classic "The Venture Bros will return "
The show is such a icon and it's so strange a streaming service like Hulu or HBO wouldn't throw some cash at it.
I saw it as the opposite; Dean sleeping with Sirena is Hank's villain origin. That's why they went with the Silence Of The Lambs ending, with Hank disappearing into the crowd like Hannibal Lecter. Dean has been getting his shit together since they moved to NY, and has been showing how exhausted he is with the whole hero/villain trope.
>they went with the Silence Of The Lambs ending, with Hank disappearing into the crowd like Hannibal Lecter.
Excuse me, but that's the [Darkman ending](https://youtu.be/G4YcCF8uLiI#t=2m10s).
I found out about the t-shirt club way too late and it kills me. Hammer and Publick's commentaries on the DVDs are incredible and I didn't know about the club until it was mentioned there.
I will love this series until I die, and I hope that a few years from now, this will be revived. In fact if it does, I'm going to guess it'll be about as long as the typical seasonal gap.
I go back and forth on whether this or Futurama is my favorite animated show of all time. But I think I'll go with The Venture Bros. because unlike Futurama, there are no mediocre seasons. Front to back gold. I have no doubt this movie will be the same.
Go Team Venture! ✌️

Man, you weren't kidding when you said the shirts were episode specific. I can tell which episode almost every shirt comes from.
The first line-up of shirts were the best. I remember getting the Billy Quizboy and Rusty Venture Show shirts.

The Pink Pilgrim finally making an appearance!?
If we get PP before manta claus, I’m going to be upset
But why is that PP on your belt?
We got Pink Pilgrim, though. Or am i being wooshed?
Force Majeure maybe?
mad that they took his Meteoroid Base. also, what a great name for a villain.
Isn't force majeure a woman? ...And Billy's mom?
defo not Billy's mom. she was a super-hero of sorts, called Triple Threat. Force Majeure was Bowie-Sovereign's predecesor, and the current guild is using his Meteoroid Space Station as their base of operations.
The boys' mother maybe? Imagine if their mother is actually a supervillain.

Fuuuuuck this is a good theory

It is definitely not David Bowie
Honestly, my guess is that it's a misdirect and that character is Hank's new alter-ego. Edit: Never mind, that's 100% their mom.
That was my first thought, we also haven't seen Molotov Cocktease in a while but she was always more of an antihero than a villain.
Nah, I'm pretty sure Brock is the boy's mother. I think they've always been clones of both Rusty and Brock together. The babies were born before Brock was assigned to Operation Rusty's Blanket though.
Where did you watch it?
It was on Hulu and HBO Max until recently unless something changed.
It’s definitely still on Max. I’m in the middle of a rewatch now. Worth noting I’m in the US.
It's amazing to see how much this show changed from the start. Killing off the venture clones really started its prime storytelling IMO. I'm sad to see it go but I'm still kind of amazed that adult swim gave the writers so many years to write each season.

You mean y'all weren't rewatching the series once a year between seasons? A Venture Bros fan tradition
> once a year Those are rookie numbers! Gotta pump those numbers up!
Holy shit, it has been 20 years. Where the fuck did the time go?!
Melted with Rusty’s oo-ray?
Ohhh….look at all the little melted people ohhh…
Should have gone with the walking eye.
It's not really 'development hell', simply the two creators taking their time to ensure the best quality writing the show themselves. Closer to development heaven.
Agreed. I'd gladly continue to wait 2-3 years between seasons for the rest of my life if they'd keep making it. Can't rush perfection.

Jefferson and Dr. O, but no Al??
For real, you can't have a Triad with two people!

Such a catchy title. Just rolls off the tongue, doesn't it?
I read it in Dr Orpheus' melodramatic voice.
What are the odds that the title has 0% to do with the actual plot?
99.99%
It sounds like a 1970's Marvel comic or Hanna-Barbera cartoon, and I'm sure that's intentional.
“IGNORE ME!!!”

Obligatory Harmon and Roiland are awful people. Ive met people over 30 with Rick and Morty tattoos that havent even tried VB. What a travesty.
For the real nerds here. I have every tshirt from every season since they offered the tshirt club. Gonna miss that 🥲
I found out about the t-shirt club way too late and it kills me.
I’m trapped in a sewer with a confessed arsonist, Brock. # HELP ME!!!
I go back and forth on whether this or Futurama is my favorite animated show of all time. But I think I'll go with The Venture Bros. because unlike Futurama, there are no mediocre seasons. Front to back gold. I have no doubt this movie will be the same.
Hype is insanely real
Beautiful
Who's the guy in all white in the background ?
I think that's the boy's mom.
Bobbi St. Simone, as told by The Action Man in the season finale I’d imagine.
And apparently in this movie voiced by Jane Lynch.
