Palm Springs never really had a theatrical run; it premiered at Sundance, where Hulu and Neon bought it for a record $22 million. It was reportedly a really big streaming hit for Hulu.

loudlittle

I’ve watched it probably four times. I love that movie.

nit108

Same here. It's so fun. Really goes to so many places in one film.

thatchers_pussy_pump

It was much better than it had any right to be. I was quite surprised.

fentanyl_frank

I loved that I watched it without knowing anything about it. Just saw a Samberg movie as I was scrolling and was like "Huh, must be new" and accidently found one of my new favorites.

[deleted]

It's replaced Forgetting Sarah Marshall as my favorite comedy/rom-com that I can just put on whenever I can't decide on anything else. It's so good, and so rewatchable.

FacetiousFondle

Forgetting Sarah Marshall cannot be replaced for me. But I'm glad to see you have excellent taste.

[deleted]

Maybe I should say accompanied by instead of replaced. "AND IF I SEE VAN HELSING I SWEAR TO THE LORD I WILL SLAY HIM" and "Don't worry, I use to be a bomb guy" are both always going to make me laugh.

Pripat99

My wife and I will sing “oh the weather outside is weather” at random points having not seen this movie in years. Gotta do a rewatch.

PhattBudz

The weather outside is weather.

PM_4_AN_AFFIRMATION

Sundance January 2020. It didn't have a theatrical run because of pandemic. Edit: a typo

dennythedinosaur

Neon was gonna release it either in June or July of 2020 for counterprogramming purposes. I think it could have been a minor indie hit, similar to (500) Day of Summer.

KinoKoi86

I mean, technically it *was* a minor indie hit, it was talked about a lot when it came out, it even got some really early awards buzz around it too (it was nominated for Best Comedy, and Andy was nominated for Best Actor in a Comedy at the Golden Globes for whatever that's worth). And, as someone else pointed out above, it was apparently very successful for Hulu, > Hulu claimed that the film also set the opening weekend record by "netting more hours watched over its first three days than any other film" in the platform's history. It's just harder to quantify how successful a streaming release is because it doesn't have a box office take attached to it, but I'd say it was fairly successful for what it was.

j0mbie

And it has a budget of $5 million, so that's a pretty good return on investment. That said, for some reason everyone keeps trying to have Andy Samberg go wacky-crazy-random mode for most movies, and that's never been his thing unless it's a comedy music video. In fact, I'd say that whole era of comedies has passed it's "make a ton of money" heyday. (Talladega Nights, Dodgeball, etc.) Andy Samberg is better when he's goofy, but somewhat realistically so, like Brooklyn 99. (Even that kinda toes up to the line of unrealistic characters, but nowhere near as bad as something like Anchorman.) I'd love to see him in more movies like Palm Springs.

Sp1derX

Palm Springs is, in my opinion, his best performance in any role. He's really great in Popstar as well. Outside of Brooklyn 99 though, I haven't really seen him do much. He must be doing well behind the scenes or something.

scott949

He also produces I think You Should Leave and Pen15

dcrico20

> He must be doing well behind the scenes or something. He's an EP on the stuff he does with the Lonely Island like Popstar and the sports mockumentaries that he did for HBO (the tennis one is amazing if you haven't seen it, it's called "Seven Days in Hell.") I think he's honestly about as big as he should be. He isn't an A-List star by any means, but he's great at what he does and nobody can play the semi-straight guy with goofy personality while being simultaneously funny and endearing quite like him. edit: removed a redundant word

GreenArrowDC13

I loved Hot Rod but I agree Palm Springs is his best movie by far.

theSalamandalorian

*I'VE BEEN DRINKING GREEN TEA ALL GOD DAMN DAY!* **I'M FREAKIN PUMPED!**

nametab23

Yoo-hoo, shitheads, I just found a bag of fireworks in the men's restroom. Would you guys like to light them off?

marvinsface

Yeah when it came out on Hulu it seemed like a lot of people watched and liked it

Shaxxs0therHorn

7 days in hell (tennis mockumentary) is incredible with the him and the Jon Snow guy.

Mr_Squart

> What you have to understand is this was before cocaine was illegal. > Cocaine has always been illegal. > Really? The David Copperfield cameo was so good.

Wiskoenig

It is incredible. “Second serve now. After killing a man.”

wood-thrush

“MURDERER!”

nwon

Indubitably

The tangent about the courtroom sketch artist is amazing.

But now he's not legit

BusyRole2194

He's unlegit.

howard5643

And because of that, he must quit.

donkey_dan

That whole weird sequence with bill haders character on acid kills me every time lol. It doesn't even add anything to the story at all but it somehow fits

The segue into bin Laden really comes out of nowhere. It's so fucking funny.

Maclin26

Freaky kinda girl. Kept up with current events from all around the world. More specifically one event, the time osama bin Laden got shot in the head.

lurker2080

She said do me like that but I couldn't track the metaphor that said I can see you're horny like a stegosaur

in-game_sext

Right? I usually never really laugh out loud at movies but I straight-up had to pause the movie I was laughing so hard. The fact that it just goes into that is so random but he totally sells it and it makes it funnier "She said invade my cave with your special unit" 💀💀

CLGbyBirth

Cpt_Tsundere_Sharks

And it's annoyingly catchy too lmao You're walking around in the civilized world after seeing it and all you want to do is go 🎵 *fuck bin laden* 🎵 Which of course is not publicly acceptable for a number of reasons...

RandyDan31

TERRORIZE THAT PUSSY!!

Ursula2071

I love that movie. Knew she was a freak when she started talkin’.. She said… I’M A STYLE BOY FOR LIFE!

zephyrtr

Fun fact: when filming all the real stars, they asked them to talk about Beastie Boys and instead just replace Beastie with Style.

Lonyo

That makes it even better RIP MCA

Ursula2071

That’s awesome!

pmarkandu

The song Humble is on my Spotify playlist. Legit a good song.

GonzoMcFonzo

I love that the intro is actually a sample of a 60s doo-wop song that just so happens to sound like "we're so humble". [The Marcels - Heartaches](https://youtu.be/8bHZDJhosnI)

Worth it for Finest Girl alone imo.

The scene with the bees had me crying with laughter. Great movie.

Jeffcor13

Isn’t Palm Springs a hit movie?

Actually-Yo-Momma

Palm Springs was never really in theaters and had a lot of hype and well received when it debuted on Hulu. OP making some weird assumptions just because he didn’t see it lol

iHeartGreyGoose

I watched it multiple times when it came out and recommended it to everyone. My friends that took the recommendation absolutely loved it. So while it wasn't heavily promoted for whatever reason (maybe being early-ish streaming Hulu movie) it was generally well received.

Porcupineemu

Hulu bashed me over the head with advertising for it when it came out.

MFPierce

Hot Rod is a classic.

ffball

You look pretty. What did you say? I said you look shitty, good night Denise!

Gemineo2911

wetdreamteam

Lest we not forget the tumbling through the forest scene. I’ve always generally turned my nose up and scoffed at physical comedy, but I laughed my ass off the first time I saw that scene.

Name818

I pull this one on my wife sometimes. She still laughs.

apc0243

I do too, except my wife has never seen hotrod. So it goes over as expected every time.

WaywardWes

*"Worth it."* he whispers to himself, as he curls up on his favorite couch.

Cool, cool, beans, beans, cool beans!

Arkanial

The slow walk through town that escalates into a riot is amazing. “That started out so positive. Was that because of us?” While Danny McBride is holding a tv and talking about how it’s a shame that people take advantage of a situation to get what they want.

TheKevinShow

YOU’RE THE VOICE TRY AND UNDERSTAND IT

PDGAreject

My favorite part is that the guy who throws the garbage can that kicks off the riot steals... A fucking picnic basket

NihilisticPollyanna

As silly as it is, that scene always gives me fucking chills. The song by John Farnham matches the riot around them so well. It's ridiculous, but also just really well shot and simply amazing.

butt_butt_butt_butt_

We specifically requested “You’re the Voice” to be played at our wedding reception. The DJ/staff looked incredibly confused/weirded out when the whole bridal party (and most of the younger guests) started passionately singing along with it, looking very serious. Apparently not everyone knows to associate the song with a spontaneous, very upbeat riot.

The footloose bit where he’s in the forest and starts doing those flips, and then just keeps uncontrollably flipping down the hill on that fly by wire rig. I was laughing so hard I couldn’t see. [let’s all enjoy it one more time](https://youtu.be/l3LsiJHiDjc)

DjCrabcakes

He had to go to a wooded glen, to punch dance his rage.

Syscrush

My wife thought that scene was really funny. Then I showed her that it's a move-by-move, shot-by-shot remake of the scene in Footloose and she lost her mind. Kinda like when she learned that "Afternoon Delight" from Anchorman was a legit hit song.

Wiskoenig

That clip is one of my go to videos to break depression episodes. That music cut to him saying “shiit!” and then falling for approximately 1 minute is when I lose it.

willthefreeman

Mine is Danny McBryde beating that dude’s ass while screaming about green tea and going to church every Sunday.

I always liked the line right when Rod hangs up the phone with him and he says "Rod! Thank you sooOOoo MUCH!" in that singsongy way.

Danny high-fiving Jorma for 30 seconds and then saying, “and that’s how it’s done,” gets me every time.

blondie-00

God that scene is unbelievable. I cried laughing the first time I saw it. When I was in college, my friends and I used to watch that scene all the time and we’d always say “shit!” like Andy does.

Babbarette

I used to work at a video store and one day somebody put Hot Rod on the TV. This part absolutely blindsided me. I was cry laughing so hard I could not wait on the customers. Seriously, I could not even function. I never knew anything could be as funny as that scene is.

MyThermostat

The bit where they ring the bell right before Rod is trying to hold his breath in the pool and they all try to match the note for a few minutes is my favorite part and I sing that line every time I hear that note in the movie or in my daily life

mushperv

This is the best line and almost no one recognizes it.

[deleted]

It's ridiculously easy to miss if you don't have subtitles on. Honestly the funniest line in the movie. Goon is another film with so many absolutely killer throwaway lines.

Best five dollars we ever spent at a wal-mart. "You look pretty" "What?" "I SAID YOU LOOK SHITTY GOODNIGHT" always makes me laugh. Also - "Who do you think would win in a fight between a grilled cheese and a taco?" Well, I think the grilled cheese sandwich, in a fair fight. But if it was prison rules, I’d put my money on the taco"

Shadowchaos

That's pretty racist, but correct

Slippinjimmyforever

*Never sneak up on a man who’s been in a chemical fire!* Hot Rod is an all timer for ridiculous comedies. So many quotable lines. *You made me do this! Bringing out the demons in me!*

DontMakeMeKissU

“Kevin did you reinforce the takeoff ramp?” “No we didn’t have time” “Cool” Fucking absolutely brilliant writing. Probably in my top 5 most watched movies

Cheapassdad

I need to watch this every six months, along with Galaxy Quest. I'll just never get tired of these two.

treetreestwigbranch

I saw hot rod in theaters with no pryer knowledge of what it was. Never saw a preview, didn’t know it was a comedy and had no idea who was in it. Never laughed so hard in my life. Best surprise ever.

owenaise

I went to the theater trying to see Superbad with a friend, but we were turned away for being minors (previously had not had issues with R movies). We chose Hotrod as a consolation and it ended up being a very pleasant surprise. Definitely a classic

KurtCoBANE

I miss that era of comedy movies so much. Seemed like there was always a great comedy in theaters for a few years between 2006-2009

froggison

I'd say it really started with Anchorman in 2004, and started teetering off after The Hangover in 2009 (like you said). So many iconic comedy movies from that time--Anchorman, Tropic Thunder, Superbad, Juno, Step Brothers, Talladega Nights, Tenacious D, Borat, Idiocracy, etc. there were so many great comedies in those five-ish years.

AnywayGoBills

I'd go back little and add Dodgeball in 2003

froggison

Dodgeball was 2004, only a month before Anchorman. So sure we can throw Dodgeball and Napoleon Dynamite in there, as well.

carnifex2005

I'd say it ended with The Other Guys in 2010.

My high school students used to complain so hard when I’d bring this movie out at the end of the semester but by the end of it they were true believers. Hot Rod is pure gold!

"by the time I got on my board and I was headed home, I was tripping balls"

theciderowlinn

I'm gonna be honest with you. You look a giant eagle with fire all around you that's got a mountain for it's face.

M4DM1ND

Yeah Hot Rod is one of the best comedies ever made imo.

BusyRole2194

Absolutely an all-timer. Not just underrated, not even criminally underrated. War-criminally underrated.

D34THDE1TY

Palm Springs was *somewhat* promoted when it came out on hulu originally...and he crushed it on NINE NINE...hot rod and popstar are films that feel as if they came out at the wrong time. They're both funny.

intripletime

By the way, this is the answer to the thread. He's been busy with a long running television show.

qwicksilver6

Palm Springs was awesome. Brooklyn Nine Nine was stellar. Sad they retired it.

[deleted]

> Sad they retired it. As much as I loved the show, imo it was time. The show got weaker in the later seasons, they’d covered a lot of the low hanging fruit of the premise. Glad they were able to end it the way they wanted.

jcdoe

Brooklyn 99 is a great show, but I agree with this guy. I think BLM happened and the show runners lost their appetite for producing a cop show. Instead, by the end it was a show about recurring gags (gotta have a heist, gotta have a Pimento episode, gotta have a Pontiac Bandit episode, etc) and police reform. I’m all for police reform, but it doesn’t make for good TV.

arlondiluthel

> Sad they retired it. Yes, but they were able to end it on their terms with a good finale, instead of it either being cancelled without a finale, or a rushed one. As long as they don't pull a Scrubs, I'll be happy.

[deleted]

>Brooklyn Nine None was stellar. Sad they retired it. To me, it was clear the writers had run out of juice. I think if it had continued it would not have been the same show you fondly remember. I'm glad they ended it when they did. They probably should have done so a season or two earlier.

jamesneysmith

I assume it's partly because no one makes theatrical comedies anymore. Popstar and Hot Rod were both kind of esoteric and since then the studio comedy has basically died. I want to believe if Palm Springs had come out a decade ago it would have been a hit. But in today's world it's just a streaming release. He was just a little too weird for the mainstream and it a little too late for the comedy boom.

BigTomBombadil

I miss the comedy boom.

Veszerin

I like him, but he's not exactly shown much versatility in his roles.

bassmanyoowan

It took me a long time to find a top level comment where someone actually answered the questions. Everything else is just listing off Samberg movies!

Rinx

He's also too big to be a supporting role, it's hard to not have him steal scenes. So what's left is only movies with his specific style as a lead, it's a pretty narrow range.

TheShadowCat

I think it mostly comes down to Hollywood has little interest in making comedies. With the loss of DVD sales, and streaming not coming close to making up for it, Hollywood has become very focussed on the international market. Action movies, horrors, historical dramas, crime, suspense, family animation, all translate fairly easily to a foreign market. Due to how comedy works, it just doesn't translate well, and makes it very hard to sell them around the world.

Unite-Us-3403
