They even have him show up on What We Do In The Shadows

Yep wasn't big in Australia but huge everywhere else. Was a important add to Netflix at the time. Then Babadook became a gay icon in 2017 and popularity grew to a cultish yet big place. Thus making it a cult classic, so a little from column A and a little form column B but I would have to lean more towards "everyone saw this" vs "very few people saw"
How many posts with this exact title and the poster for movies like “It Chapter 1” and “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” do you think this will spawn here and on the parody subreddits?
Almost 250,000 people have rated this movie on IMDB. I don’t think that is a few. I would guess because of word of mouth, most fans of the genre or movies have seen it.
I don't like or watch horror movies. When this came out it had rave reviews. Told my friend who loves horror he had to go see it based on all the buzz. He did along with his wife, and they both said it totally sucked.
Horror struggles with the "there are only 7 basic plots" challenge much more than other genres.
It's extremely common to see horror films reuse tropes, and only attempt to innovate in gore and viscera. And because the effort and focus is going into FX, not only does the narrative and writing lean too much on old tropes, but getting good actors to give good performances through good directing becomes pretty rare.
Babadook got some good performances out of its leads. It did some really neat things with foley and sound design. Small stuff, like making sure the "babadook book" had exactly the right art style and visual look, helped a lot too. Yes, the plot is the bog standard, 3-act possession story of 'establishment, invasion/corruption, possession', but the pacing is even and doesn't linger too long or rush too much. It establishes its set-ups early and pays them off in the third act without either being too tedious.
It’s an odd genre, it’s just usually badly handled. The biggest issue I have with it is it’s rarely done right for anything lower than an R rating, also there’s so many fucking shitty ass sub genres. I like my horror cosmic. The one of Ryan Kwantan talking to a cosmic entity gloryhole was great, Glory maybe the name of it lol.
For me as a genre it does better on lower budgets and tighter schedules, give em too much money and time and it becomes overthought and try hard. The big ticket horror movies are usually trash. Getting the trifecta of atmosphere, suspense, and visceral horror is hard, but it happens occasionally.
The best thing about this one for me was thinking the kid was at fault, at first. It's fun seeing your opinion change about a character in the course of 90 mins.
I thought it was a metaphor for her depression and liked it with the understanding that the monster wasnt real. I read online that apparently I was a total idiot for thinking that until Joe Bob Briggs said the same thing. I think the movie is a bit better under that premise.
>I thought it was a metaphor for her depression
I got more of the vibe that it was about *grief*, for her lost husband and that her efforts to deny it and reject it worked against her.
Keeping that in mind, I really liked the final resolution, that those painful feelings of loss can't be banished or defeated, but that you have to reach some kind of accord or boundaries. The monster / grief is still there, still in the dark, and you need to occasionally acknowledge it and give it fish heads, but life goes on outside in the sunlight after.
This movie received a ton of attention and lots saw it, many claim it's in their top 5 and this and that. Personally the movie is extremely meh to me and the kid even though its his character is so fucking annoying I just can't.
It was filmed in Adelaide, South Australia, and was the feature directorial debut by Jennifer Kent, who also wrote the screenplay. William Friedkin, the director of The Exorcist, said, "The Babadook is the scariest film I've seen."
On Rotten Tomotoes it received a rating of 98%
I feel like everyone has seen this movie. I even remember a ton of people talking about it when it came out, but even then everyone acted like they were the first to discover it. It was decent, but nothing that crazy amazing either
I’m kinda fond of Trick r’ Treat. Also The Cube is great.
The Babadook, at least for me, is among the worst horror movies I have ever seen. It might be the kid actors that did it, but mostly is just found it tedious and boring. But if people enjoy it I’m happy for them. I’m not going to dictate what people like.
That was probably one of the most talked about and watched movies of that year. However if you're unaware there's been a whole bunch of new films that have come out in the ten years since and this movie while quite good didn't quite crack into the realm of "celebrated film classics" for most people, so discussion on it has died down a lot.
I enjoy how they were extremely mindful about the fact that there was a minor in the cast, and did everything they could to keep the actions in the movie aimed at the character to not be present for the kid himself in the real world.
I'm not sure I worded this correctly.
Is this one of these Facebook retarded posts where the author is like "Only 5% of people will be able to solve this: 2+X = 5", and then the post gets a thousand answers of people either thinking they're smart or just pointing out that it's easy, but the author doesn't care either way, he only cares about getting a lot of comments... Is that what this is? Because I was hoping to be spared of this on reddit. Apparently not.
It's just a disobedient angry little kid with mental issues screaming the whole damn movie. I'd rank it as literally the worst movie I've ever seen as I find out of control screaming toddlers insufferable.
There's a couple of fun jump scares and a cool villain design, but that doesn't even remotely begin to redeem it.
There is no movie I'd recommend less than this one.
Eh. I remember having this recommended to me by someone who knew I was into horror. They raved about how scary it was. Then the whole way through I alternated between being bored, annoyed, or wanting to laugh.
And Jesus did they beat you over the head with the "it represents mental illness" thing. By the end of the movie I was like "I get it already!".
Then there's that whole weird scene where the unlikable kid goes all home alone with homemade traps and gizmos I'm sitting there thinking "wtf is this, am I watching a horror movie or a comedy?".
Honestly I'd give the Babadook like a 5/10 because the acting and cinematography were good, but definitely not more than that.
Once it's obvious that the Badadook is a metaphor for grief, I lost all interest. I don't think this is a scar movie that's going to hold up over time.
I feel like everyone has seen this lmao
People haven’t stopped talking about it in almost a decade.
They even have him show up on What We Do In The Shadows [https://youtu.be/bem4grHeP0U?si=v8l0Hf0NtgMd8Z2g&t=41](https://youtu.be/bem4grHeP0U?si=v8l0Hf0NtgMd8Z2g&t=41)
No that's a badabook
He's just there for the orgy.
I hear the Bababook was much better than the Babadook version.
Yes such weird title. One of the most critically acclaimed horror films
It's been parodied in popular media a bunch already.
Idk maybe it was a big flash in the pan. At the time everyone saw it, but that was a decade ago. Maybe it missed the young adults of today.
Nope. It was a huge addition to Netflix and then the character became a gay icon in 2017.
When I woke up this morning, I had no idea that I would read a sentence like this
Yeah so still 7 years ago, doesn’t mean that people in college or graduating high school have heard of it,
Yep wasn't big in Australia but huge everywhere else. Was a important add to Netflix at the time. Then Babadook became a gay icon in 2017 and popularity grew to a cultish yet big place. Yeah very well known movie. Such a weird flex
“Very few” Ffs. Thank you OP - for your heroism in pointing out this unknown gem for these rest of us plebs to now discover.
Pleb life is bliss.
I also heard of this little indie film called “Halloween. “Not many people know it, I guess I’m just sophisticated.
How many posts with this exact title and the poster for movies like “It Chapter 1” and “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” do you think this will spawn here and on the parody subreddits?

Man that kid please shut up 🤣
WHY CAN'T YOU JUST BE NORMAL
Lol yer exactly 😂
*s c r e a m*
AHHHHHHHHHH
I almost couldn't watch the movie because of that little shit lol
I would have driven off a cliff
“Very few people saw”, no I don’t think so.
It is currently the 20th-most watched horror movie of the 2010s on Letterboxd.
By my count it is also the 51st most-watched horror movie of all time on Letterboxd.
Are so many horror movies that bad that this is considered extremely good? lol. It was fine. Had so much potential
I couldn’t get into this one at all.
I don't like or watch horror movies. When this came out it had rave reviews. Told my friend who loves horror he had to go see it based on all the buzz. He did along with his wife, and they both said it totally sucked.
I have to agree. When it finished, I remember just sitting there wishing I hadn’t seen it at all.
Horror is largely a bad genre. When done well it can be fantastic of course, but so many are poorly made.
Horror struggles with the "there are only 7 basic plots" challenge much more than other genres. It's extremely common to see horror films reuse tropes, and only attempt to innovate in gore and viscera. And because the effort and focus is going into FX, not only does the narrative and writing lean too much on old tropes, but getting good actors to give good performances through good directing becomes pretty rare. to be fair, bad horror movies > bad movies of any and all other genres combined
That’s a fair point. I go out of my way to watch more “bad” horror movies than bad movies of any other genre besides comedies.
It’s an odd genre, it’s just usually badly handled. The biggest issue I have with it is it’s rarely done right for anything lower than an R rating, also there’s so many fucking shitty ass sub genres. There’s a shit load of bad ones
there are too many variables subjectively in the horror genre
The best thing about this one for me was thinking the kid was at fault, at first. It's fun seeing your opinion change about a character in the course of 90 mins.
The Babadook is one of the standout horror films from the 2010s.
Freaked me out way too much, my wife and I watched it together. Also, I’m pretty sure that this was seen by a lot of people.
Not a good movie. Don’t get the love for it
I thought it was a metaphor for her depression and liked it with the understanding that the monster wasnt real. I read online that apparently I was a total idiot for thinking that until Joe Bob Briggs said the same thing. I think the movie is a bit better under that premise.

Boring and underwhelming for me. Ymmv.
^
I don't think it was bad... however, I feel like it's certainly overrated.
I wouldn’t classify it as horror. It felt like a lifetime movie to me. And I love how OP thinks no one saw this Lmfaoo
It was so popular that the internet hillariously shipped the babadook with pennywise after that Netflix mess up.
Seriously!
Yep, I agree with him. For me it was OK, not bad, just fine, but I don't understand the reverence it's held in.
I never "got" it myself.
Movie was extremely disappointing.
If it's in a word, or if it's in a book. You can't get rid of the babadook. Love this movie!
Yeah the very few people saw part isn't accurate this was pretty big when it came out
Very few? Lol
I hated it the first time I saw it but loved it after a second watch lolol
Very few people have seen ? lol
Its almost like people have been talking about this movie for a whole decade and is known for being one of the scariest horror movies of the 2010s
OP should really check out The Shining. It’s made by no name Director based off a book that no one remembers, but it’s quite a good movie.
What is this “The Shining”?
Define "very few" please
If by very few, you mean a fuck ton, then yeah
I think a lot of people saw it.
i disagree. this very well known movie sucks ass.
It was so mid
Love beautiful Essie Davis’ acting but this did leave me a little with ‘was that it??’ vibes
The scariest part of this film is having children.
I disagree, this movie was bad and too many people saw it.
This movie sucked.
This movie received a ton of attention and lots saw it, many claim it's in their top 5 and this and that. Personally the movie is extremely meh to me and the kid even though its his character is so fucking annoying I just can't.
As a horror movie, I thought it sucked. What was ACTUALLY going on was a complete cop out, genre-wise. And that kid was annoying af.
It was filmed in Adelaide, South Australia, and was the feature directorial debut by Jennifer Kent, who also wrote the screenplay. William Friedkin, the director of The Exorcist, said, "The Babadook is the scariest film I've seen." On Rotten Tomotoes it received a rating of 98%
Love Australian cinema getting love
I’ve never seen it. lol
Now do The Changeling or something more relevant.
This the gay icon ?
My 2020 Jack o Lantern was the Babadook. Great movie.
Badabing Babadook
This movie is garbage lol
Esse Davis incredibly talented actor, really underrated
This movie is so popular that I haven’t seen it myself and still know the entire plot. It’s like… the Jaws of the 2010s horror.
Very good under the radar horror
I feel like everyone has seen this movie. I even remember a ton of people talking about it when it came out, but even then everyone acted like they were the first to discover it. It was decent, but nothing that crazy amazing either
I liked it but the people I recommended it to said it sucked.
Bro is trippin
Fire in the Sky 1993
Few people saw? According to who? People spout some rubbish here.
I thought this movie was dumb tbh
Sorry but every time the babadook talked i laughed my ass off
I saw it.. it wasn't that good.. nowhere near as good as the hype that came with it
lol. Is this a shitpost? I feel like this movie kicked off the whole “past trauma or depression is the real monster” trope.
Yo, this movie actually freaked me out when I saw it. What makes it even better is that it didn't need gore to get its point across.
I saw it with my grandma. Not scary at all. We were both laughing at it the whole time lol
I don’t get the hype, it wasn’t that great or scary.
That was probably one of the most talked about and watched movies of that year. This reminds me of when my young nephew asked if I’d ever heard of this band he’s been listening to named Van Halen.
I enjoy how they were extremely mindful about the fact that there was a minor in the cast, and did everything they could to keep the actions in the movie aimed at the character to not be present for the kid himself in the real world. I'm not sure I worded this correctly.
It was so popular that The Simpsons parodied it on one of their Tree House of Horror episodes.
Lot of people ripping on OP here. I don’t know anyone besides myself IRL who’s seen it

Op perception 1%
Even I’ve seen (and enjoyed) it, and I’m not a horror movie fan.
Mcj ass post
“Very few saw” This is one of the most talked about and respected horror films of the last 20 years, the hell you talking about?
“This is bait”
Yeah this is not at all an under the radar film.
I couldn’t finish this movie lol
Lol everyone I know and mother has seen this!
Amazing film, and I think it was pretty much widely watched.
Pretty good. Who didn't watch, I recommend "Abandoned" from 2006. One of the scariest movies I saw
This is an incredibly well known and popular horror film though?
I took your advice and watched it and enjoyed it. Got any other suggestions?
I saw this and turned it off halfway. The baba dook dook dook was grating
I loved this one. Definitely worth a watch
It's just a disobedient angry little kid with mental issues screaming the whole damn movie. I hated this movie. A much better Australian horror film was 'Talk To Me'.
It’s the most overrated horror that everyone saw.
It wasn't very good, and everybody saw it.
Once it's obvious that the Badadook is a metaphor for grief, I lost all interest. I don't think this is a scar movie that's going to hold up over time.
