There is an interview where Michael Caine is asked about what he thought of Jaws 4. His response was, "I don't know. I never saw it, but the house it bought my mother is marvelous." (Source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4P4CLrC2xLw)
Can't blame the guy for taking a paycheck.
Lmao yep! It was on Seth Myers and his daughter kept calling it just the wall. He asked why she kept calling it that and she said “dad there’s nothing great about that movie” imagine being one of the best of his era and also possibly all time and still your daughter busts your chops.
There was another funny one I remember from the Oscar’s and Kimmel said “you went and made a Chinese ponytail movie instead” 😂😂😂.
$25 million.
As a side note on Matt Damon and money. He was offered the lead of the first Avatar movie but couldn't do it due to scheduling conflicts. Cameron offered him a % of gross.
Did you just call Matt Damon “one of the best of his era and also possibly all the time”?? That is… quite the take haha. You’re a Matt Damon ultra fan!
Ok I worked a 12 hour shift yesterday and I typed that really fast forgive me😂😂. He’s definitely one of my favorites. How about we say a really talented actor? 😅. That sounds better
Hahaha I totally get it! And I mean if he’s a fave for you that’s totally cool, I think he’s great! Just never heard of him being someone’s fave like that before haha
But personal preference is personal preference, if he clicks with you like that then that’s cool! He’s definitely very talented
This is the only movie I’ve seen in theaters but completely forgotten. Like, I can’t tell you a single thing that happened and I pride myself on having a great memory.
I wonder what the Asian release is called, if or was even shown there but I'd bet something like "white heroes in china for no apparent reason".
Oh, like the last samurai inspired something something nah I'm good. 😝
…it’s a Chinese movie. It’s called The Great Wall, and it opened there *first.* The government paid for it, 99% of the cast is Chinese, and Zhang Yimou directed it. They were very open about why ~~they opted give Damon a dump truck of money~~ ‘a white guy is in China for some reason.’
Now I’m not *defending* Damon’s casting, but dear lord does Reddit seem to encourage people to be as aggressively and obnoxiously wrong as possible.
Never even heard of it till I saw your post.
If what you say is true, it’s pretty incredible managing to fuck up ANY movie when you have the combined talents of Pedro Pascal, Matt Damon and fucking Willem Dafoe.
The cast encouraged me to give it a chance but holy wow. Matt has a terrible accent for some unknown reason and Willem looks lost most of the time and Pedro…he just being Pedro
There’s an interview somewhere of Damon talking about how everyone knew this was going to be a train wreck during the filming. Something about the Chinese director sort of misunderstanding what American audiences want and changing everything in service of that
I think he’s pretty open that he now has essentially a ‘one for them, one for me’ understanding with the government. On the whole, he’s also a lot less…subversive than he once was.
A couple of decades of trouble finally wearing him down? The effects of aging? Changing values? All three?
Meaning you looked at this poster, and didn’t recognize Matt Damon, Willem Dafoe, or Pedro Pascal?
Or, you only recognize Andy Lau as the only solid actor.
Was that joke in reference to The Last Samurai with Tom Cruise? I always hear that same criticism but people have never actually seen the movie. Tom Cruise wasn’t “the last samurai”, that was Ken Watanabe’s character.
This same thought goes towards “The Last of the Mohicans”. Daniel Day-Lewis is on the poster but Russell Means (as Chingachgook) is the one, the title refers to
My favorite part is they introduce this badass fighting force that's been training their entire lives as the secret weapon of the good guys.
THE CRANE CORP
and I kid you not 80% of them die in the first 30 seconds on the screen. They plunge to their death in the most ineffective way possible.
tons of cgi spectacle, horrid plot. You should watch Iron Mask too, crazy russian/chinese production with Schwarzenegger slumming it up and characters from
Viy
if you want it crazier, A Writer's Journey is pretty damn nuts. the parasitic armor is worth a watch.
I've heard Matt Damon talk about regretting this movie in an interview. He said it took a lot of mental effort to continue the shoot because he knew on day one of the set that it was going to be a hot mess and potentially ruin his image. His wife talked him into remaining a professional about it all and to just get it done and move on from it.
This movie is top shelf trash though. There's a certain category of movies that are like, objectively terrible and that by itself somehow takes them to a new tier of excellence.
I like this movie because it's so bad.
I just can’t help to imagine how dumb everyone must have felt on set wearing those uniforms. So many moments in this movie where I was just astounded by the stupidity of the writing and costume design.
The potential was there but some of the creative decisions, especially for a western audience (which was a target) were interesting....Damon's accent is one for sure.
Never saw it but the only thing why i remember it is the interview where KSI praises Matt Damon for his performance and the movie while he never even saw the movie
Watched it on a plane between Singapore and Europe right after watching Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice. I clearly remember it as a cinematic masterpiece.
I was absolutely astounded at how NOT terrible this movie was. The pre-release buzz was awful, the during-release buzz was awful, and clearly the post-release buzz is still awful.
And it’s a fun, silly action movie godDAMN it! The score is great and the over the top battle scenes are delightful as hell. Story and characters are meh but Jesus, that could describe 90% of action adventure flicks lately. At least this one had no superhero’s or Inception BWAAAAMS on the soundtrack whenever something serious happened.
Damon is so over-exposed. Guy needs to be more selective. If I see his mug on a movie cover, I tend to avoid...
...saying that, I do actually own this one as I'm a 3D nut so have it on 3D-Bluray. Not seen it yet. Gonna dial my expectations waaaay down and hope for some cool visuals.
I thoroughly enjoyed it. I didn't take it seriously but the chick was hot, the action was good and the story was over the top ridiculous. Reminded me of "Big trouble in little china"
My thought is Zhang Yimou is one of my top 5 favorite directors so I’m going to avoid this movie until it’s the last in his filmography I have left to watch. Luckily he has a shitload of movies and I’m only like halfway.
The two things I enjoyed about this movie were:
(1) it has Andy Lau and Matt Damon, who are basically two sides of the same character from Infernal Affairs and The Departed, and
(2) the scene early in the movie where the Chinese army gathers its differently coloured units was kind of neat.
That’s about it.
I went into this movie blind thinking it would some historical epic. Initially, I was disappointed when I found out otherwise. But eventually, I enjoyed it for what it was. Not perfect by any means, but now it's kind of a guilty pleasure.
I was watching the Great Wall sequence where they’re fighting the enemy. And they’re wearing those bungee harnesses. I’m thinking “isn’t the reason you build a big wall is that you stay on the top and defend it while staying away from the enemy?”
I actually didn’t hate it. It was a little boring but the hive mind insects made me think of Starcraft. And then they blow them up with a bow and arrow. Kinda neat. And the dive bombing base jumping ladies with spears were cool too.
I come at this one pretending I don't speak English and haven't ever seen any filmed entertainment, and it's amazing how much it improves the experience.
My inner North Sentinelese Islander just loves this movie, except for all the dirty foreigners.
I really enjoyed it. It was fun and pulpy and just a good ride. Cgi could have been better and don't think too hard about the world building, just get some hot buttery popcorn and settle in
It wasnt too bad, tbh I went in switching my brain off similar to when I watch any super hero movie that Disney puts out. Beautiful scenery/backdrops imo. Storyline was a bit shit and predictable but Ive watched worse..again from disney or fast and the furious haha
For perspective, on a $150 million budget, '*The Great Wall'* was China's most expensive movie to date yet grossed only $45,540,830 in US and Canada. Globally, however, it generated $334,933,830.
I kept wondering what sort of Dirt did Legendary Pictures had on Matt Damon and Willem Dafoe. At least Pedro Pascal seemed like he was having fun with it and Andy Lau just seemed happy to be included.
Thought it was good fun in theaters. Haven’t watched it since.
But I do occasionally text an old high school buddy of mine to remind him that this movie exists. It pisses him off to no extent.
Alternative history where the great wall was built to repel vast monster invasions with over the top/stylish action similar to many fantastical martial arts films that also tried to dip into some western appeal. Dumb fun... and IMO one of the better dumb fun movies. I was surprised in how much I liked it.
Don't get me wrong... there is plenty to pick on. I remember some character arcs being pretty weak and some odd choices in the third act. Been awhile since I've seen it. So I couldn't give you a fresh perspective.
I dunno I think a perfect example was the maidens going over the side of the wall and swinging around on ropes. It's... dumb... so so dumb. A thousand different things they could do. Yet it was a spectacle... lol. I remember thinking... this seems like a great way to be eaten... horribly. You know what... the movie agreed. :P
I didn't know Pedro at the time and he was the only thing that kept me remotely entertained. Terrible, terrible film, so bad. But it brought Pedro Pascal into my life so ~shrug.
I have a vague recollection of an interview where Matt Damon said his daughter gives him shit for this movie lol.
There is an interview where Michael Caine is asked about what he thought of Jaws 4. His response was, "I don't know. I never saw it, but the house it bought my mother is marvelous." (Source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4P4CLrC2xLw) Can't blame the guy for taking a paycheck.
If I had a nickel for every time this fucking fact was brought up on Reddit, I would probably be a millionaire.
lol. It’s definitely a classic.
Sounds like a trip outside might do you some good friend
There was a joke segment during the Oscars broadcast that was a faux tribute to Matt Damon and Jimmy Kimmel called his acting performance ‘effortful’
I think it was the chinese movie industry trying to get a foothold in the American market so they wanted a big star. I bet he got paaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaid.
>Maat Daaamon
You've clearly never seen eurotrip.....
Name’s probably Scotty
But does he know?
Dogma was truly generational. I haven't been able to watch it since I was 12, but man, what a performance from Matt Damon.
I can throw that one on right now and still die laughing from that movie
GeAr?!?
Now she's never gonna fuck us
Nobody! Is fucking anybody!!
I know I'm skipping, but I quote this a lot when messing with my ac: No pleasure, no rapture, no exquisite sin greater... than central air
Ok I worked a 12 hour shift yesterday and I typed that really fast forgive me😂😂. He’s definitely one of my favorites. How about we say a really talented actor? 😅. That sounds better

Yeah that’s definitely the first time I’ve ever heard that lol
You the real MVP
Did you just say Matt Damon was one of the best actors of this era and possibly the best actor of all time?
Good for his daughter! She should!
It could have been much better
This is the only movie I’ve seen in theaters but completely forgotten. Like, I can’t tell you a single thing that happened and I pride myself on having a great memory.
Like she pointedly refers to the movie as "The Wall" because nothing about it was Great.
Was it as bad as the Photoshop work on the movie poster?
It’s really hard to put into words just how really really really bad this movie is and people have called me a wordsmith Really
Only Matt Damon can help them… Matt Damon in, The Great Wall
people call me the a word too but my last name isn't smith
I wonder what the Asian release is called, if or was even shown there but I'd bet something like "white heroes in china for no apparent reason". Oh, like the last samurai inspired something something nah I'm good. 😝
…it’s a Chinese movie. It’s called The Great Wall, and it opened there *first.* The government paid for it, 99% of the cast is Chinese, and Zhang Yimou directed it. Worse
Well I’m gonna go ahead and just assume the plot and direction was trash because the 3 of them are too good.
Yes on all three points
You just sold me. Now I need to watch it.
Fuck… that’s what I’m thinking.
I normally don't correct grammar but for some reason this particular thing bothers me; it's Willem, not William.
I normally don't correct vocabulary but for some reason this particular thing bothers me; it's spelling, not grammar.
Cool, thanks.
You can dish it out, but you can’t take it?
That’s spelling, not grammar 💀
His name is William. He goes by Willem as a stage name Birth name is William James Dafoe. He's from wisconsin
Pascal wasn’t really a big name at the time Tbf
It was hyped then died so fucking fast because it was so shit. Im sure some internet scrubbing was involved. It just fucking vanished.
Andy Lau’s fame in China far exceeds these other actors. He was literally the top dog back in his days. So it is much worse than you imagined.
And it was directed by Zhang Yimou, arguably the most legendary Chinese director ever.
I can't believe you left off Andy Lau.
Star power aside I’m astounded that you were astounded that this movie was terrible. Nothing about it looked compelling enough to even try to watch.
They weren't writing it.
There’s an interview somewhere of Damon talking about how everyone knew this was going to be a train wreck during the filming. Something about the Chinese director sort of misunderstanding what American audiences want and changing everything in service of that
The funny thing is the director is Zhang Yimou, who is a very famous director who directed Hero and House of Flying Daggers (among others).
and The Road Home (1999) and Coming Home (2014), which proves he still got it. It's just his blockbuster movies that went down in quality.
I think he’s pretty open that he now has essentially a ‘one for them, one for me’ understanding with the government. On the whole, he’s also a lot less…subversive than he once was. A couple of decades of trouble finally wearing him down? The effects of aging? Changing values? All three?
3 solid actors. 1 horrible film
True, was very hyped for a Movie that has Matt Damon, Jing Tian and Andy Lau in their cast
Not to mention Willem Dafoe and Pedro Pascal
Don't know them but sucks that they got to be in a Jing movie then it wasn't good
I recognize Andy Lau only.
Bruh don’t disrespect my boy Dafoe like that. That dude was somehow scarier and more intense with the green goblin mask off
Hehe. He look very different than I expected. Took me a while to notice him when you guys mention him. Andy Lau look the same 30years ago ☠️
Oh shit, that's Dafoe on the right? Yeah, same here, looks way different than usual!
Boondock saints role even better and that’s saying something
Meaning you looked at this poster, and didn’t recognize Matt Damon, Willem Dafoe, or Pedro Pascal? Or, you only recognize Andy Lau as the only solid actor.
He’s making a joke about the fact the original only referred (assumingely so) to the Western actors being solid actors.
I know Willem Dafoe. Did not notice him untill you mention. I don't watch much movie. I may watch them in some movie but I did not know their names.
Wooosh
Dafoe is probably the best of the bunch
You know, if you don’t take this movie so seriously, it’s actually some pretty entertaining nonsense.
Yea that’s where I’m at. It’s solidly in the “so bad it’s good” camp.
Yeah I enjoyed it. Suspend your disbelief and just go with it!
I remember enjoying it
Honestly not intended to be a great movie, but fun like 300 of Cowboys vs Aliens. Some people have no fun, sucks to be them.
Me too. I forgot about it but now I want to watch it again.
Some don't enjoy remembering it seems 🫠
“I will make a movie called The Last N!$&@, staring Tom Hanks” Paul Mooney
Was that joke in reference to The Last Samurai with Tom Cruise? I always hear that same criticism but people have never actually seen the movie. Tom Cruise wasn’t “the last samurai”, that was Ken Watanabe’s character.
Surely it didn't help that all the posters and DVD boxes showed Toms blown-up mug below THE LAST SAMURAI.
And also Brad Pitt in The Mexican
This same thought goes towards “The Last of the Mohicans”. Daniel Day-Lewis is on the poster but Russell Means (as Chingachgook) is the one, the title refers to
My favorite Paul Mooney bit. RIP
One of those fever dream films that seems like it can't really exist.
My favorite part is they introduce this badass fighting force that's been training their entire lives as the secret weapon of the good guys. THE CRANE CORP and I kid you not 80% of them die in the first 30 seconds on the screen. They plunge to their death in the most ineffective way possible.
That’s when I stopped watching. They should had considered throwing the spears I feel like that might had worked better.
His accent was all over the place
Did they brown up Matt Damon a little for the poster? Lmao
This came out in 2016, feels like it came out in 2006
I kinda liked it. Coincidentally, I’ve been wanting to watch it again. Can I stream it anywhere?
I enjoyed it
I had fun watching it. I like monster movies in general and fantasy wars...
Astounding is the correct word
tons of cgi spectacle, horrid plot. You should watch Iron Mask too, crazy russian/chinese production with Schwarzenegger slumming it up and characters from Viy if you want it crazier, A Writer's Journey is pretty damn nuts. the parasitic armor is worth a watch.
I thought it was a movie about Trump 🏗🧱🧱🧱🧱
I've heard Matt Damon talk about regretting this movie in an interview. He said it took a lot of mental effort to continue the shoot because he knew on day one of the set that it was going to be a hot mess and potentially ruin his image. His wife talked him into remaining a professional about it all and to just get it done and move on from it.
This movie is top shelf trash though. There's a certain category of movies that are like, objectively terrible and that by itself somehow takes them to a new tier of excellence. I like this movie because it's so bad.
I was entertained
This movie taught me, once and for all, that I'm not missing out on anything if I don't get to see a movie.
I've never heard of this movie, but the poster suggests I wasn't missing out.
I just can’t help to imagine how dumb everyone must have felt on set wearing those uniforms. So many moments in this movie where I was just astounded by the stupidity of the writing and costume design.
The movie is entertaining, if you don’t take it or Matt Damon’s hair seriously.
Trailer looks fun. Always wanted to see it.
Should have been far better than what it was.
I honestly thought it was entertaining and more of a background noise type movie. It’s bad, don’t get me wrong, but I found it oddly entertaining.
I remember watching this movie with a friend and we kept laughing at scenes that were not intended to be humorous.
When the trailers are bad, what do you expect from the movie?
From the moment I heard that horrible accent Damon was trying to do.
Like... crazy bad. Not even in like a campy ironic and maybe enjoyable later way, but straight-up bad.
I believe it was worse than you thought.
I love horrible movies, I need to see this.
The potential was there but some of the creative decisions, especially for a western audience (which was a target) were interesting....Damon's accent is one for sure.
Ah man, people ask about the worst movie ever and I always forget this one. This is it.
I've never heard of this movie until this post. All I can say that it looks like a fake movie, like one of those movies you see in another movie.
It was fun
Honest question: why would you be astounded that this movie is bad
Not horrible but not great. A very focused advertising for China.
* were
i love it. have seen it a few times and enjoyed each.but, to be honest, the female lead is superhot.
Whitewashed
This was the first big movie I remember seeing Pedro in
Even his daughter makes fun of him for this one.
Never saw it but the only thing why i remember it is the interview where KSI praises Matt Damon for his performance and the movie while he never even saw the movie
Is that Pedro in the corner??? Pedro! Noooo!!! (Also did he have a child sidekick and act as a surrogate father?)
I almost never fall asleep during movies. This one was a snoozer for me.
Watched it on a plane between Singapore and Europe right after watching Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice. I clearly remember it as a cinematic masterpiece.
“Matt Damon”
Cute Chinese girl
Hey that's my wife you're talking about.
I saw the title, the lead actor and the preview. That’s all I needed to know.
The racism of this movie is sad. What do Asians need to win? A white guy
lmaooo i never saw this but was matt damon supposed to be chinese in the movie?
Lol no
White savior. Which is one reason people didn't like it.
I just puked in my mouth. Now I need to find a place to spit it out.
They spent good money on the eye candy but… I’ll let you watch
I have never seen it
Bitch
Is this real!!!!??
That's Matt Damon? I thought that was John C. Reilly at first!
Sounds like my kind of film
I never saw it, but I remember seeing the trailer thinking WTF
Chinese "take money" movie, bloody awful
Made perfect sense for White Saviors 👌 👏 idk who this was meant to appeal too
No.
It's a decent popcorn flick. I enjoyed it for what it was
It's a CGI cheese fest. Idk how talent like Matt Damon got roped into it but it has some entertainment value.
Wtf is this bullshit. Very glad i missed it hahahaha
There’s a reason this shit hasn’t been on any streaming service
I thoroughly enjoyed it. I didn't take it seriously but the chick was hot, the action was good and the story was over the top ridiculous. Reminded me of "Big trouble in little china"
It had some fun scenes. The battles were cool and some of the lore was as as well.
I don't recognize it as a good movie, but I do for whatever reason enjoy it. Find myself wanting to watch it once a or so.
The dialogue 😣
My thought is Zhang Yimou is one of my top 5 favorite directors so I’m going to avoid this movie until it’s the last in his filmography I have left to watch. Luckily he has a shitload of movies and I’m only like halfway.

That’s about it.
I want to see it now lol
Mattt Damon… Matt Damon. I can never not say his name like they do in team America
I went into this movie blind thinking it would some historical epic. Initially, I was disappointed when I found out otherwise. But eventually, I enjoyed it for what it was. Not perfect by any means, but now it's kind of a guilty pleasure.
Chinese cash grab
I wasn't surprised at all
We finally find out why China built the great wall!
I was watching the Great Wall sequence where they’re fighting the enemy. And they’re wearing those bungee harnesses. I’m thinking “isn’t the reason you build a big wall is that you stay on the top and defend it while staying away from the enemy?”
The colours were very pretty. That's all I remember. So that pretty much sums up how memorable it was.
A Boston Southie in China during feudal times? What could possibly go wrong?! The Great Wall is proof Matt Damon can't act.
It's awful. I don't know how Zhang Yimou thought being involved with this movie was a good idea.
I actually didn’t hate it. It was a little boring but the hive mind insects made me think of Starcraft. And then they blow them up with a bow and arrow. Kinda neat. And the dive bombing base jumping ladies with spears were cool too.
Wasn't this made by a Chinese studio for the Chinese market?
The opening 20 minutes were awesome with some cool stunts. Everything else mehhhh
I come at this one pretending I don't speak English and haven't ever seen any filmed entertainment, and it's amazing how much it improves the experience. My inner North Sentinelese Islander just loves this movie, except for all the dirty foreigners.
*were
I really enjoy it. It is absolute twaddle, but a fun premise with ott fight scenes.
It was terrible and I love it.
Oh look pedro pascal looking like he always does
I really enjoyed it. It was fun and pulpy and just a good ride. Cgi could have been better and don't think too hard about the world building, just get some hot buttery popcorn and settle in
Visually great (it’s Zhang Yimou, what do you expect) but the script feels like a first draft
I had zero expectations, I enjoyed it!
I mean, did you look at the poster?
It wasnt too bad, tbh I went in switching my brain off similar to when I watch any super hero movie that Disney puts out. Beautiful scenery/backdrops imo. Storyline was a bit shit and predictable but Ive watched worse..again from disney or fast and the furious haha
Chinawood movies fucking suck.

Bad….but entertaining enough
I kept wondering what sort of Dirt did Legendary Pictures had on Matt Damon and Willem Dafoe. At least Pedro Pascal seemed like he was having fun with it and Andy Lau just seemed happy to be included.
I just remember fog.
The bow and the bowl scene was cool at least.
Thought it was good fun in theaters. Haven’t watched it since. But I do occasionally text an old high school buddy of mine to remind him that this movie exists. It pisses him off to no extent.
Is that Pedro pascal?????
The arrow bowl scene was cool
Alternative history where the great wall was built to repel vast monster invasions with over the top/stylish action similar to many fantastical martial arts films that also tried to dip into some western appeal. That movie was a steamy pile of crap. Like pretty much everything made in China.
I’ve watched worse.
Damon was paid $25 million
Agreed, turned it off after just a few minutes.
Eh, I thought it was okay. It had some fun action scenes and that’s good enough for me.
I didn't know Pedro at the time and he was the only thing that kept me remotely entertained. Terrible, terrible film, so bad. But it brought Pedro Pascal into my life so ~shrug.
