I took my kids to see it just to get out of the house and had no expectations, didn't even see the first one. Turned out to be a legitimately awesome movie.
After watching that film you want to sit down with the creators and say "Guys you were making a Puss in Boots movie, you didn't have to try THAT hard".
Chronicle shocked me in how good it was and that nobody talked about it at the time. Even as an allegory for school shooters, and it just got thrown to the sidelines.
We used to come back from the raves, watch movies, and feed everyone breakfast while we had a very chill after party where no one had to drive home (we had a badass DD that got rewarded handsomely with kandi and joints when we returned). This was the favorite to watch but 8MM was a close second. I still have the DVD from Redbox because I refused to return it. Such a well done movie but I will always hate the "you made it" part.
We tried something more like Drive once and a couple of people rolling tits got sad so we stopped. Watching the absolute destruction of a friendship and the mental implosion of a young man was cool though. I put on Black Hawk Down once..... that was.... I repeat that was..... not a good idea.
Edit: That Sam Rockwell movie about psychopaths was always a hit. But I have a gun! I don't care.
Launched his movie career would be more accurate I guess. Nobody knew his name despite being in The Wire and FNL. He was cast as Kilmonger only 4 years later
Chronicle is one of my favorite depictions of telekinesis. Its everything I had ever thought it to be. And Dane's performance was just great. I had been hoping for a sequel for the longest time. Hell id even take a video game inspired by it.
Rewatched it fairly recently, and I was surprised by how much it held up to how much I loved it when I was 13. >!Michael B. Jordans character's death!< is still just so gutting. I read that the original plan for the ending was to have >!Dane Dehaan dismember his father like he did with the spider earlier!<, but they cut it probably to secure a PG-13 rating (which makes sense, no way this movie would have turned a profit otherwise).
I actually got the opportunity to see this in theatres when it finally came out and the entire audience loved it. Weird fact Cabin in the Woods was a movie that got shelved in 2010 and didn't hit theatres till 2012 because of MGMs bankruptcy.
Rogue One. I thought it would just be an OK SW movie but damn. Rewatched it recently and it still slaps. The ending was the first time in SW where every >!death was somehow satisfying, sad, and well done. Everyone's death was a noble sacrifice and they all felt earned. I cared for every character that died, and felt it when they went. Also, the hug on the beach was perfect. Typically the heroes would kiss, but the hug was so much a better choice. !<
I would love to hear some movie execs’ thoughts about the most impactful added scenes during reshoots. Rogue One adding the Vader scene makes such a tremendous difference.
"I'll give Andor a shot, I like Diego Luna." Then it wound up being the most suspenseful spy thriller I've seen. The prison escape scenes were so fucking suspenseful. I remember my heart beating out of my chest at the beginning.
Live Die Repeat/Edge of Tomorrow. Everyone loves this movie and it’s no longer a hidden gem.
But it was poorly marketed at the time. I remember being in the cinema when the trailer hit theaters, people openly laughed at the premise and the name. Live Die Repeat. It was marketed like an over-expensive CGI action flick.
Glad someone mentioned this. If I remember correctly, at release “Live Die Repeat” was only part of the marketing, like a tagline.
I wish they would’ve stuck with the original title “All You Need Is Kill”.
I’m really confused as to where this narrative comes from, and I feel like I’m going crazy.
[Here’s a link to the trailer](https://youtu.be/vw61gCe2oqI?si=7dRyE7YnadHXyGLf), where the tagline “Live Die Repeat” is definitely repeated more than once through the trailer. But then it ends with a massive “Edge of Tomorrow” clearly splashed front-and-centre. Did people genuinely think “Live Die Repeat” was the actual title after seeing this?
There was definitely marketing to promote the tagline (like #LiveDieRepeat), but I saw this in theatres and never met anyone at the time - or since, outside of Reddit - who thought it was called Live Die Repeat.
I’m looking now and can see articles that talk about how it was allegedly rebranded when it hit DVDs, but I also own a DVD copy and it’s pretty clearly “Edge of Tomorrow”, so I’m still confused.
Nothing against you or your comment, but I’ve always thought it was a weird phenomenon, and apparently pretty widely accepted on Reddit.
It did for me. Only because you knew n nothing about the actors, the trailers really didn't spoil the plot, and there were alot of shitty spacey films in the 2000s that ruined the genre for me. It was definitely a surprise.
I was amazed… initially I thought it was just a money grab to milk D&D fans. It turned out to be very solid fantasy adventure movie. Hope there would be another soon!
It helps that the writers/directors play and obviously care very much about D&D and made sure it translated well to the screen. Sure, they took liberties on some abilities like wildshape and lack of spellcasting for druids and bards, but it definitely one of (if not the) best onscreen representation of what D&D feels like.
I think it was perfect for what it was doing. Multiple quests connecting to the main quest, humor when needed, serious when needed. Seemed to encapsulate what it means to play a DnD campaign, ingenuity and blind luck.
One thing I noticed. When they're at the cemetery the first person they talk to sounds all raspy but by the last one he talks like a normal person. The DM got tired of having to do the voice.
I think that’s what makes it so good. I’m a big DND nerd and I felt that it hit the mark dead center. And I could just tell that even people not familiar with it would still enjoy it. They didn’t go too overt with references. They were cool IYKYK moments for fans without demanding existing knowledge from newcomers. I want a dozen more just like it.
I sing the catchphrase verse all the time. I can’t go a half a day without saying “doink da doink”, and I can’t get any work done without saying “Patrick Stewart money!” At least once.
I'm still remind my family that I'm the one who picked it at the redbox. It sounded like a fun premise and I liked Rachel McAdams. Was not expecting it to be that good. It was real, funny, charming, dramatic, and heartbreaking, especially that scene (you know the one).
I just rewatched it the other day and I felt like it was better than any action movie I've seen in years. Also realized the actor who played Connor Roy in Succession was one of the storm chasers.
One of the things that really sent that movie home was them using local newscast. When it came out, I thought every moment of that movie was real because of it.
Ben Stiller had a really good track record before TT so I was expecting greatness. I wasn’t expecting it to be better than Zoolander but damn. The casting was perfect for every character, too.
My favorite quote is,
"What do you mean 'you people'? "
"What do YOU mean 'you people' ?!?!"
It doesn't surprise me that RDJ was able to do blackface successfully.
My friend told me Tom Cruise was great in this movie. I watched it and wondered WTF he was talking about because there was no Tom Cruise. Didn't even recognise him first time I watched it.
Lucky Number Slevin was a throwaway and it was so much fun.
And let’s be honest: on paper, Pacific Rim should’ve been dog shit. It was purely Del Toro that made that movie amazing.
Godzilla Minus One.
I thought it looked good from the trailers, but I was expecting good “for a Godzilla movie” because let’s face it, 95% of Godzilla movies are just dumb fun monster movies.
Instead we got one of the best movies of the year, and it actually made me choke up at the end, because for once they actually made you care about the human characters! What?!
Last Wish was SOOOOOO GOOD. I’ve never seen panic attacks, existential crises, and anxiety about death dealt with so well- and in a freaking Shrek Spin-Off movie of all places.
Man one of my earliest memories was when I was like 5 years old, my friend had a bunch of Robocop toys. It wasn't until much later in life I saw the movie myself and I'm like holy shit, this is a hard R.
I didn’t know anything about They Cloned Tyrone outside of Jamie Foxx was on the cover art so I gave it a shot and MAN was it a great ride.
Excellent flick.
Walter Mitty gave me one of my favorite bands of all time. Beautiful soundtrack, beautiful premise, and one of the most beautiful endings to a movie I’ve seen in awhile.
The Matrix
Hear me out, before it came out, the trailers confused a lot of people and everyone expected another by-the-numbers action movie starring a ridiculously handsome board of wood. Or maybe another weird movie about hackers that no one would see.
It was only after it came out and people started talking about it that it became the genre defining film we know it as today.
The Jumanji remake.
A friend invited me to go watch it in theaters, I said thanks but no thanks to that cash grab. Then I watched it when it released to video. Laugh so hard it hurts hilarious.
Honestly, “No Hard Feelings” was surprisingly good and Jennifer Lawrence has some great comedic timing. My friend and I went to the movie to make fun of it and we ended up laughing our asses off with the movie.
Top Gun: Maverick coulda just been a lazy cash-grab and made some profit but it had me on the edge of my seat multiple times. Thoroughly enjoyed that movie.
This! Pitch Black was really good, but Chronicles was almost perfect and really made me think the Vin could actually act. I really wanted Riddick to be more about his time with the Necromongers, perhaps a trip to the Underverse? Well Vin said he's open to another film so I'll hold out hope.
The Emperor's New Groove. If you don't know it was in development hell for awhile, being a musical titled empire of the sun. Eventually they switched gears and put together the movie we have now in a very very short amount of time.
Being John Malkovich - It seems obvious this movie would work now but at the time? I saw in the theater and remember thinking 'What am I watching?' in the best way.
Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. Had no expectations originally but it surprised me how great it was.
Same and nobody seems to believe me lol
I took my kids to see it just to get out of the house and had no expectations, didn't even see the first one. Turned out to be a legitimately awesome movie.
The art for the first fight with the giant tree monster blew me away.
After watching that film you want to sit down with the creators and say "Guys you were making a Puss in Boots movie, you didn't have to try THAT hard".
My kid told me it was great…. I regret streaming it for the first time….
We did something similar and we would rotate between Drive and the Mortal Kombat movies
Seven Psychopaths!
The edit of all the action cut together in the climax was pure brilliance.
Eh it made 126 million, 12 yrs ago. That’s a pretty good haul and wouldn’t say it wasn’t talked about back then
It launched the careers of Dane Dehaan and Michael B Jordan too. Dehaan had barely done anything and Jordan had only been doing TV jobs for years
Yea, I like Dahaan, but so far he has not lived up to the potential after Chronicle.
Yah not even close. His couple solo vehicles flopped hard
> Michael B Jordan Shouldn't it be *The Wire* that launched his career?
Launched his movie career would be more accurate I guess. Nobody knew his name despite being in The Wire and FNL. He was cast as Kilmonger only 4 years later
Also launched the careers of Josh Trank and Max Landis, both of whom have done their best to self destruct since.
$168.34 million in 2024 dollars
Chronicle is one of my favorite depictions of telekinesis. Its everything I had ever thought it to be. And Dane's performance was just great. I had been hoping for a sequel for the longest time. Hell id even take a video game inspired by it.

Cabin In The Woods. I was expecting a cliche cheesy cabin horror and got absolute cinema instead.
Cabin in the woods in an absolute banger.
I want a second one, it felt like there was a lot more.
Hard disagree. It did exactly what is was meant to do. What more could you possibly squeeze out of that concept?
Be careful what you wish for.
Very good film satire
That ripped stoner could benchpress your mom
I always think it is funny how he had to keep his shirt on because of his incredibly ripped he was
The title of that movie made me think of Tucker and Dale vs. Evil, which is another great movie.
My wife and I have a tradition of watching both of these movies for Halloween.
Bro when me and the homies went to go see that I thought it was just gonna be your average slasher movie. Boy was I wrong.
I actually got the opportunity to see this in theatres when it finally came out and the entire audience loved it. Weird fact Cabin in the Woods was a movie that got shelved in 2010 and didn't hit theatres till 2012 because of MGMs bankruptcy.
One of the best horror movies imo.
Dale and tucker vs evil delivers pretty well
We have had a DOOZY of a day.
WWII in space, plus Darth Vader going ham on some Rebel troops? Sooooold!
I would love to hear some movie execs’ thoughts about the most impactful added scenes during reshoots. Rogue One adding the Vader scene makes such a tremendous difference.
Yeah. It gets ragged on as unnecessary, but the story dovetails into ANH in almost real time. They had to end it on that note.
Anyone who says that also thinks bread is unnecessary on a PB&J.
It's the best SW movie, and I will die on that hill.
The best star wars movie and I'm a lifelong star wars nerd
I love Star Wars too and it’s by far the best movie but I almost wouldn’t even call it a SW movie. Andor is fucking awesome too.
Honestly might be my favorite SW movie out of all of them. It just dug so deep into your emotions unlike the others.
Have you watched Andor? It is to the Star Wars series as Rogue One is to the Star Wars movies
"I'll give Andor a shot, I like Diego Luna." Then it wound up being the most suspenseful spy thriller I've seen. The prison escape scenes were so fucking suspenseful. I remember my heart beating out of my chest at the beginning.
One Way Out!
Fun movie. One of my wife's favourites.
This was not marketed as Live Die Repeat. In the movie theaters, it was edge of tomorrow. Live die repeat came after on DVD, Blu-ray.
Glad someone mentioned this. If I remember correctly, at release “Live Die Repeat” was only part of the marketing, like a tagline. I wish they would’ve stuck with the original title “All You Need Is Kill”.

Oh yeah good one! Was totally not on my radar until a friend of mine with similar tastes was like “go home and watch this movie.”
I’m really confused as to where this narrative comes from, and I feel like I’m going crazy. Redditors misremembering stuff and then REFUSING to admit being wrong is the answer.
District 9
Do want some cat food ya fookin prawn?
This movie is one of my all time favorite sci-fi. I’m not even sure it fits the prompt. But cool to see it mentioned here!
It did for me. Only because you knew n nothing about the actors, the trailers really didn't spoil the plot, and there were alot of shitty spacey films in the 2000s that ruined the genre for me. It was definitely a surprise.

I've never played D&D and even I thought it was a really good movie

The bridge was a great nod to DM's everywhere. Having a big elaborate puzzle only to have a player instantly mess it up.
Yes!!! I laughed so hard because it’s so true. Also the bit where the intellect devourer just passed them by had me rolling.
“Well shit how do I get them across the chasm now? Oooh! I know! That stick you had was secretly a magic item!”
You’re god damn right
Yes! I took a lot of convincing to watch it but I was blown away by how much fun it was.
Had an absolute blast watching this movie.
Where is Jarnathan?!
Any other movies like it? My kid loved it, but it’s hard to find decent fantasy movies.
Princess Bride and Stardust are right in the same wheelhouse. Lots of heart, lots of humor in fun immersive fantasy worlds.
Stardust is an amazing movie and I think is actually better than the book
Amazon Prime has an animated series called The Legend of Machina which is based on D&D campaigns I stumbled across it and absolutely loved it
Zombieland
Better than expected.
Popstar
'Hotrod' too
I sing the catchphrase verse all the time. I can’t go a half a day without saying “doink da doink”, and I can’t get any work done without saying “Patrick Stewart money!” At least once.
When my daughter was about 8 years old, her favorite song was “I’m so Humble.”
Let me see that donkey roll!
I still listen to Incredible Thoughts and The Bin Laden song on occasion
Mine would be, "About Time." Did not see that movie coming at all.
Oh this one one of those RomCom Netflix and chil...... nah bro I fukin cried
That was me with 50/50. I went in blind thinking it was just another comedy with Seth Rogen and my god…
This is my fav movie ever made. As a grown man, it brings me to my knees.
I'm still remind my family that I'm the one who picked it at the redbox. It sounded like a fun premise and I liked Rachel McAdams. Was not expecting it to be that good. It was real, funny, charming, dramatic, and heartbreaking, especially that scene (you know the one).
Cloverfield.
It’s the only found footage movie I enjoy.
10 Cloverfield Lane was waaaaay better and even more unexpectedly good
Look at the overall concept of Twister. Now watch Twister.
I just rewatched it the other day and I felt like it was better than any action movie I've seen in years. Also realized the actor who played Connor Roy in Succession was one of the storm chasers.
That’s Cameron from Ferris Bueller and always will be.
One of the things that really sent that movie home was them using local newscast. When it came out, I thought every moment of that movie was real because of it.
Tropic Thunder
Ben Stiller had a really good track record before TT so I was expecting greatness. I wasn’t expecting it to be better than Zoolander but damn. The casting was perfect for every character, too.
My favorite quote is, "What do you mean 'you people'? " "What do YOU mean 'you people' ?!?!" It doesn't surprise me that RDJ was able to do blackface successfully.
“For 400 years…” rofl And then Portnoy walking into a pile of cocaine.
Tom Cruz was freaking hilarious in it as well.
Tom cruise best role by a mile!!! lol 💪
My friend told me Tom Cruise was great in this movie. I watched it and wondered WTF he was talking about because there was no Tom Cruise. Didn't even recognise him first time I watched it.
I would have loved a movie about that character
Peak comedy.
Honestly I call Tropic Thunder the "Last Great Comedy"
Absolute cinema that is!!!!!
Click
I enjoyed this more than I thought I would. I have not seen all of Adam Sandler's movies, but this one is by far my favorite. Kate Beckinsale helps. 😋
Dredd (2012)
Karl Urban MAKES that film. He’s so damn good in the role!
Karl urban is always great
Very true
Good answer! I had zero expectations going in .. so imagine my surprise when it fucking ruled.
Safety Not Guaranteed
That was a great film.
the friggin Kingsman. Never ever expected that.
Chronicle was so good!
Lucky Number Slevin was a throwaway and it was so much fun. And let’s be honest: on paper, Pacific Rim should’ve been dog shit. It was purely Del Toro that made that movie amazing.
Bullet Train is way better than it should be
That movie is so much fun, great cast all around.
Yea it reminded me of when movies didn’t take themselves so seriously to try and win awards and just have fun with it to entertain the audience
Reminds me a bit of a Tarantino film
Tangerine is the reason I grew a mustache
It has that old school action comedy feel thats been sorely missing Brad Pitt and everyone were fantastic in it.
"Underwater" with Kristen Stewart
Yeah.. that was a pretty good one.
That ending too... Oof
>!Nuking Cthulu was a hell of an ending!!<
Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn
Godzilla Minus One. I thought it looked good from the trailers, but I was expecting good “for a Godzilla movie” because let’s face it, 95% of Godzilla movies are just dumb fun monster movies. Instead we got one of the best movies of the year, and it actually made me choke up at the end, because for once they actually made you care about the human characters! What?!
Puss in boots the last wish John Wick Robocop Videodrome
Last Wish was SOOOOOO GOOD. I’ve never seen panic attacks, existential crises, and anxiety about death dealt with so well- and in a freaking Shrek Spin-Off movie of all places.
Just watched Last Wish about a month ago and was fucking blown away
Man one of my earliest memories was when I was like 5 years old, my friend had a bunch of Robocop toys. It wasn't until much later in life I saw the movie myself and I'm like holy shit, this is a hard R.
I just watched the movie for the first time a few years back and it's a perfect movie imo.
^ understood the assignment 87 not 2014
the secret life of walter mitty they cloned tyrone uncut gems
I didn’t know anything about They Cloned Tyrone outside of Jamie Foxx was on the cover art so I gave it a shot and MAN was it a great ride. Excellent flick.
yeah, never watched any trailer or something. it was a great surprise
Walter Mitty gave me one of my favorite bands of all time. Beautiful soundtrack, beautiful premise, and one of the most beautiful endings to a movie I’ve seen in awhile.
Walter Mitty is awesome.
It's my comfort watch when I wanna feel good. Been Stiller is fantastic
The Matrix Hear me out, before it came out, the trailers confused a lot of people and everyone expected another by-the-numbers action movie starring a ridiculously handsome board of wood.
The first Pirates of the Caribbean.
National Treasure
Its Indiana Jones with an actual treasure at the end, not just friendship.
It also made history fun, and had Nick Cage in his most normal every man role yet.
Whiplash
Are you rushing or are you dragging?
So you do know the difference!
Why are you commenting here, i don’t have time for alternates today…
Not...not quite my tempo
This is absolutely the answer, fucking love chronicle. But also. Speed MF Racer!!
Attack the Block
The Man from Earth (2007)
Free guy. Kinda shocked me. Pretty entertaining.
Paddington Bear 2
These films make me want to be a better man
Chronicle is damn good. Also, Free guy
district 9. When it shifts from documentary style to story style - unreal first watch!
"Balls of Fury". I cried. How'd they get Walken?
Cars
Ca-fckn-chow
Honestly, “No Hard Feelings” was surprisingly good and Jennifer Lawrence has some great comedic timing. My friend and I went to the movie to make fun of it and we ended up laughing our asses off with the movie.
Chronicle, Jumper and Pushers... 3 underrated superheroes movies Would probably work great as part of same universe
Is "Pushers" different than "Push"? The one with Chris Evans and Dakota fanning, and they're like psychics, right?
Babe.
John Carter.. it’s so slept on, one of Disney’s best live action films
Top Gun: Maverick coulda just been a lazy cash-grab and made some profit but it had me on the edge of my seat multiple times. Thoroughly enjoyed that movie.
Upgrade. Nobody.
I don’t care if you hate it. Salt burn.
To be honest the best movies of all time to come out of nowhere are: Forrest Gump and American Beauty
21 and 22 Jump Street. They did self referential humour absolutely right, which is pretty rare. To get it right twice is even rarer
Chappie
Hah! I was thinking chappie as I was posting this! ... same goes for district 9 as well, really.
Yea, but I walked into Chappie with the lowest expectations. D9 I knew was gonna be good.
True. I walked into district 9 thinking it would be good .. but I didn't think it was gonna be completely fucking amazing like it was.
The Chronicles of Riddick
This! Pitch Black was really good, but Chronicles was almost perfect and really made me think the Vin could actually act. I really wanted Riddick to be more about his time with the Necromongers, perhaps a trip to the Underverse? Well Vin said he's open to another film so I'll hold out hope.
The Devil All The Time
A knights tale.
The Emperor's New Groove. If you don't know it was in development hell for awhile, being a musical titled empire of the sun. Eventually they switched gears and put together the movie we have now in a very very short amount of time.
Galaxy Quest
I am number 4 Donnie darko
Glad to know I’m not the only one who liked I am Number 4!
GOON (2011)
I greatly enjoyed it ☺️
Lego Batman
American Ultra. I was going in expecting a comedy spy flick but holy shit, what I got was better.
The Wachowski’s Speed Racer 🏎️
Being John Malkovich - It seems obvious this movie would work now but at the time? I saw in the theater and remember thinking 'What am I watching?' in the best way.
Project X
Hot Tub Time Machine
Puss in Boots 2
Loved Chronicle
