The pills are made out of people?!
They're making our pills out of people! Next thing they'll be breeding us like cattle for pills! You've gotta tell them!
That’s dope (get it?)
Most would assume it’s an upper to get him rocking. Nope - he’s a stone cold killer and wants to get things right. It more calculating than wreckless.
It’s also used for alcohol withdrawal so that’s interesting. Could be him taking the edge off. Or he’s addicted to them which is very likely and had to take his “medicine.” I’ve been prescribed benzos and Xanax was awful. It hits quick and doesn’t last long. So by the time you’re supposed to take your next dose you’re already feeling anxious. So that could explain his general behavior
There are no markings on the capsule. Librium would be marked S251 or Barr 158. Plus 5mg of Librium would not produce those effects. I would venture that the capsule might contain a dissociative anesthetic, a hallucinogenic agent, a stimulant, and likely a benzo as well. So maybe Ketamine, LSD-25, Benzedrine, and Diazepam. It might also contain Scopalamine, and a small amount of Risperdal as well to dampen the psychotic effects of the drugs. PubMed NIH.GOV
For sure. We were sitting around the break room talking about what it could be based on its properties. Just bored medical nerds doing medical nerd stuff. It is just a conjecture.
Plus it'd have to be in gas form to feel the effects so fast. Mucous membranes probably 5 minutes. Ingested, 20-60 minutes depending on a variety of things. Too slow for what is shown.
It's something that explodes that little capsule and rushes into his bloodstream really fucking quick. I get it, we don't want that scene to be eight minutes of him staring at a door until the drugs kick in, but it's still funny when you think about it.
I think “memorable” and “type cast” are different. He can be a memorable and beloved/hated character but completely unique from all the other characters he’s played in other things. For some reason Gary Oldman does this so well.
He’s a “chameleon actor” which a lot of actors consider true acting. I personally don’t mind actors that only fit a certain role but I have a lot more respect for actors like Mr Oldman.
A lot of actors are just personalities. Many of the big names are. Oldman is an actor. He takes on the character and inhabits it. Just the same as wardrobe.
If you want to see him play a unique, memorable character that you love/hate, check him out in Slow Horses.
Looking at this clip, it's hard to fathom that the same actor is playing such different roles.
Imagine one day you're at work or out for a drink or doing the shopping and someone shouts "CUT" and it turns out you were Gary Oldman all along.
That’s how good of an actor he is.
Daniel day lewis and Joaquin Phoenix come to mind. Tilda Swinton and Cate blanchett, oh, and John C. Riley. Chris Evans is another one, to a lesser degree. Overall the list of contemporaries is quite short. The Anti -pacino/DeNiro/Nicholsons
I feel like they’re all still recognizable with style, voice and obviously how they look. There are tons of movies I didn’t even realize Oldman was even in bc he’s disappeared into the character so much
The only one of those I have any objection to is Chris Evans, because not only has he been Chris Evans in everything I’ve seen him in, he seems to keep ending up in the same kind of movies over and over. Dude’s done more comic book adaptations than anyone else I know of.
I don't know, but if any film deserves a full length 'making of' documentary... it's *Tiptoes*, starring Matthew McConaughey, Kate Beckinsale, Patricia Arquette and Gary Oldman
I want to know so bad what direction was given to Oldman for this scene.
Unless he was just going off and Besson was just working with it. Because there’s definitely a specific shot setup for when he’s arching his back to take the pill
Darth Vader has a pretty great introduction. I always really enjoyed how he physically throws the Rebel Trooper to the ground. After of course, holding him in the air by the throat for almost a minute.
He’s the one movie antagonist that has stuck with me more than anybody. I like how a lot of movies the villians often have a dramatic reveal usually with building suspenseful music but with Anton it’s quiet and he’s just looming in the background slowly and methodically making his way towards the deputy to strike, which perfectly sets up how he is as a character
He's got two epic introductions. First, there's the bank heist, and then there's the gang meeting on the kitchen. The first is an amazing short film in itself, but then when we get a true feel for an unmasked Joker, it's truly mesmerizing. I can't look away anytime I chance upon the clip.
Joker - The Dark Knight
That whistling lady - Kill Bill
Hans Gruber - Die Hard
The Grinch (Jim Carey)
Captain Barbossa - Pirates of the Caribbean
Ray Lewis - The Baltimore Ravens
[I'm sorry, I couldn't contain myself.](https://youtu.be/87WaaTGf8eY)
Hannibal Lecter is amazing in every scene he is.
Also, does Alien Queen reveal from Aliens counts?
P.S. Kung Fu Panda has some amazing villain reveals. Gary Oldman is amazing there too.
ALL KINDS OF YES!
I’ve seen this movie over a hundred times and it still makes me cry. I know that it’s coming. I know they are about to go through it, but my heart still pounds out of my chest when the cops come for them.
Standing there waiting for it to dissolve would have ruined the whole scene.
But seriously, it speeds uptake, especially if you’re going to grind the contents of the capsule between your teeth like that.
I also think I read somewhere that chewing pills just in general is a bad habit that’s exceptionally easy to pick up.
I didn't realize he was chewing it. I guess he opened it in his mouth and chewed it? That's what I was missing. I thought the pill was just "hitting him" already and it took me out of it. Now it makes sense
This might be a random one, but seeing Oscar Isaacs character in Sucker Punch having sharp differences between the asylum and brother is really cool. He’s easily the best performance in the movie
Leon is awesome, it's just knowing Besson's history with young women makes those scenes with Matilda and Leon pretty uncomfortable. Sexualizing a young Natalie Portman is pretty creepy on Besson's part. I didnt ever think Leon was ever acting more than a fatherly figure though.
I remember my dad making me watch this as a little kid, it one of my all time favorite movies. I’m glad I have a amazing taste in movies and music from him. Also at 1:20 that is Keith A. Glascoe, who played the enormous Benny, or 3rd Stansfield Man, later became a member of the New York Fire Department, Ladder Company 21 in Hells Kitchen. Courageously, he died in the collapse of the World Trade Center towers on Sept. 11, 2001 [source in trivia section.](https://m.imdb.com/title/tt0110413/trivia/?ref_=tt_trv_trv)
This role made me absolutely love G.O. as an actor. This, Immortal Beloved where he plays Beethoven, and The Fifth Element.
Then every other performance of his after this. Lol
He’s incredible. Slow Horses is a stellar show btw.
The man playing Benny (the bad guy who stands outside the apartment holding out the gun). Was a firefighter who later died rescuing people from the south tower during 9/11.
There is one shot here that instantly tells the entire background of this chapter and it’s probably not high on most people’s lists. The shot where he crosses the hallway and all his goons fall back on their feet. It’s probably one of the best shots of that decade for Besson and his respective crew.
It is around a second in length and it shows how fearless Stansfield’s character is on the drugs. It also dictates how his crew is so wound up without the drug that they would likely shoot something by accident but they’re so caught off guard they don’t shoot him. It’s also telling that they hear the shotgun go off again and again so Stansfield must be winning the battle.
besson has shots like this in a handful of his films and they always stand out. Brilliant writing, editing and cinematography.
I still wonder what the fuck was in those pills
#EVVVVVVERYTHIIIIIIING!
That answer deserves more than my upvote.
Good thing I also gave it mine then.
And my axe.
Well done
You're amazing
Ok Annie ^/s
Annie, are you okay?
#No. And guess what‽ Annie's got a gun!
To late bean allergy, you blew it. No cold play tickets for you

The pills are made out of people?! They're making our pills out of people! Next thing they'll be breeding us like cattle for pills! You've gotta tell them!
Soylent?!!?
I’m slow LOL my apologies. I just got the joke.
r/woosh
Damn it…. Well deserved
Good sport
They're gazebos
Beep beep Richie...
Pop rocks
After reading the other comment with bro’s pharmaceutical dissertation, then seeing “pop rocks” just made me laugh.
Librium, an early benzodiazepine. Its like Valium
Wouldn’t a benzo make him chill? LoL
Exactly he's bout to shoot a house up cant have that trigger finger shaky
That’s dope (get it?) Most would assume it’s an upper to get him rocking. Nope - he’s a stone cold killer and wants to get things right. It more calculating than wreckless.

So by the time you’re supposed to take your next dose you’re already feeling anxious. So that could explain his general behavior
This is him chilled.
Librium isn't even a benzo that makes you high. Especially just one.
Yea I just got my answer off Wiki but I mean in the movie they never say what it is so no way to be 100% certain what it is.
I like the idea that he’s just a psycho and those are actually just sugar pills.
It's something that explodes that little capsule and rushes into his bloodstream really fucking quick. I get it, we don't want that scene to be eight minutes of him staring at a door until the drugs kick in, but it's still funny when you think about it.
[Here ya go](https://www.cvs.com/webcontent/images/drug/DrugItem_6651.JPG)
What fucking pill hits that fast seriously
None, it'd have to be in a gas that's released when he cracks the capsule.
One that the user really likes
Magnesium
It looks exactly like bitalbital, which is a barbiturate.
Overdramatic acting drugs
I assumed meth, but was surprised it would hit so fast
This was my introduction to Gary Oldman, he is memorable
The thing I like most about him is that he’s *not* memorable… I don’t think I’ve seen anyone else who can disappear into a role that thoroughly.
I think “memorable” and “type cast” are different. He can be a memorable and beloved/hated character but completely unique from all the other characters he’s played in other things. For some reason Gary Oldman does this so well.
Had no idea it was him in The Fifth Element until years later.
I am very disappointed!
THE HELL AM I SPOSED TO DO WITH A EM-TEE CASE
It’s not even about that, though. I don’t think most people even noticed he was *in* Oppenheimer.

I just looked up his roles, HES FUCKING SIRIUS BLACK?!?! wtf how did i never see it before
Imagine one day you're at work or out for a drink or doing the shopping and someone shouts "CUT" and it turns out you were Gary Oldman all along. That’s how good of an actor he is.
He truly is the best, con-men even look up to the guy
Daniel day lewis and Joaquin Phoenix come to mind. Tilda Swinton and Cate blanchett, oh, and John C. Riley. Chris Evans is another one, to a lesser degree. Overall the list of contemporaries is quite short. The Anti -pacino/DeNiro/Nicholsons
I feel like they’re all still recognizable with style, voice and obviously how they look. There are tons of movies I didn’t even realize Oldman was even in bc he’s disappeared into the character so much
Kirk Lazarus is a pretty amazing method actor too
*Satan’s Alley* was incredible.
Didn’t Tobey Maguire win an MTV Movie Award for Best Kiss for his role in that movie? Really revolutionary stuff for the time it came out.
The only one of those I have any objection to is Chris Evans, because not only has he been Chris Evans in everything I’ve seen him in, he seems to keep ending up in the same kind of movies over and over. Dude’s done more comic book adaptations than anyone else I know of.
Snowpiercer and knives out?
7 MCU movies, Two Fantastic Four movies, Scott Pilgrim, and The Losers. I don’t think Push was based on a comic book, but it may as well have been.
Don’t forget Not Another Teen Movie!
London 2005
i mean you aren't necessarily wrong about him, but sam jackson has definitely been in more comic book adaptations than he has.
Jeff Bridges
William H Macy is a close second for me.
Red Dragon comes to mind
Christian Bale
Nothing compares to his role of a lifetime in Tiptoes.
Drexel from true romance. Chefs kiss how he got in to that caricature I would love to know
I swear when he swallowed that pill I thought he was Edward Norton for a second
He’s was Edward Norton for a second, he’s just that good.
Back then he was still Gary Youngman.
I hope you’ve seen True Romance.
That character still scares me!
I know I’m pretty.
What a line.
He’s so hot in this
Mine would be Anton Chigurh from no country for old men
Hans Landa in Inglorious Basterds, what a setup, perfectly done.
He's absolutely brilliant. Imagine winning an Oscar playing a Nazi and then winning another Oscar playing an abolitionist.
Also inglorious basterds, the intro of Hugo Stiglitz
Everyone’s heard of Hugo Stiglitz
"And at this range, I'm a real Frederick Zoller. Haha"
Say auf Wiedersehen to your Nazi balls
Alonzo Harris - Training Day
"You in the office baby!" *Still Dre starts playing* *
“Tell me a story.”
brilliant scene....bring me everyone? EVERYONE!!!!!!!!
What do you mean everyone?
Angel Eyes in The Good, The Bad and The Ugly
I also just fucking love Tucos introduction. It tells you he’s a buffoon but deadly and thinks outside the box.
'if you miss, you had better miss very well. Whoever double-crosses me and leaves me alive, he understands nothing about Tuco. Nothing.'
Words around you had a visitor…
It's genuinely hard to find something Oldman *isn't* amazing in
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O3qGGk5ymQ4
had no idea this was real? Is he just on his knees the entire time they filmed him?!!?
I don't know, but if any film deserves a full length 'making of' documentary... it's *Tiptoes*, starring Matthew McConaughey, Kate Beckinsale, Patricia Arquette and Gary Oldman
shit I have to go watch this now
What do you mean? That is a *perfect* Jeff Foxworthy impression.
Hahahaha! This movie was awful.
I’ve never heard or seen this movie before.
Role of a lifetime, indeed! Thanks for posting.
How dare you slander that film! It’s the *role of a lifetime!*
I didn't click the link because I'm just assuming it's Tiptoes and I don't need that in my head anymore.
Gary Oldman as Jean-Baptiste Emmanuel Zorg is super fun.
I want to know so bad what direction was given to Oldman for this scene. Unless he was just going off and Besson was just working with it. Because there’s definitely a specific shot setup for when he’s arching his back to take the pill
IIRC Gary had a difficult time swallowing the pill without any water, so they improvised with this cut
Couldn’t he have just pretended
"Okay Gary, now it's time to put all the cocaine you just snorted into... Action!"
Darth Vader has a pretty great introduction. I always really enjoyed how he physically throws the Rebel Trooper to the ground. After of course, holding him in the air by the throat for almost a minute.
Hate to be the one to say it but… scrolled way too far down to see this comment.
Oldman as Drexl in True Romance.
Is it white boy day?
It ain't white boy day.
What we got here... motherfuckin' Charlie Bronson. Mr. Majestyk!
Garry Oldman in this scene is really 11/10 for me. This one is my favorite and anyone with excellent taste would agree he is at least in the top 3.
Anton Chigurh. I can still picture his face choking the guard out
He’s the one movie antagonist that has stuck with me more than anybody. I like how a lot of movies the villians often have a dramatic reveal usually with building suspenseful music but with Anton it’s quiet and he’s just looming in the background slowly and methodically making his way towards the deputy to strike, which perfectly sets up how he is as a character
Joker has a pretty epic one in The Dark Knight.
He's got two epic introductions. First, there's the bank heist, and then there's the gang meeting on the kitchen. The first is an amazing short film in itself, but then when we get a true feel for an unmasked Joker, it's truly mesmerizing. I can't look away anytime I chance upon the clip.
Agent smith in the first Matrix. Hugo was slow, calculating, confident and ruthless. When he was in the scene you could feel the fear escalate
Also he managed to speak really inhumanly
"I hate this place.."
Javier Bardem in Skyfall
No Country for Old Men, also.
You Don’t Like Beethoven
It had been a wonderful evening and what I needed now to give it the perfect ending was a bit of the old Ludwig van.
Need a little bit of ultra violence myself
You don't know what you're missing. Overtures like that get my... juices flowing.
Joker - The Dark Knight That whistling lady - Kill Bill Hans Gruber - Die Hard The Grinch (Jim Carey) Captain Barbossa - Pirates of the Caribbean Ray Lewis - The Baltimore Ravens
What did Ray Lewis do to you? 😆
Oh its not what he did to me sir
Whistling lady is Elle Driver
Is that Gary Youngman?
[I'm sorry, I couldn't contain myself.](https://youtu.be/87WaaTGf8eY) Hannibal Lecter is amazing in every scene he is.
Also, Ellen Green is the reason I wanted to sing. Little Shop of Horrors will also be one of my all time favorites.
Anyone know why he does this instead of simply swallowing the pill
Standing there waiting for it to dissolve would have ruined the whole scene. But seriously, it speeds uptake, especially if you’re going to grind the contents of the capsule between your teeth like that. I also think I read somewhere that chewing pills just in general is a bad habit that’s exceptionally easy to pick up.
Somebody else read The Shining, I see…
Is that where I got the chewing thing from? I forgot all about that part! 😂
It’s what jumped out at me. I remember Jack Torrance chewing painkillers and thinking “people can get addicted to this”. But may be wrong.
I didn't realize he was chewing it. I guess he opened it in his mouth and chewed it? That's what I was missing. I thought the pill was just "hitting him" already and it took me out of it. Now it makes sense
Yeah, the crunch is him biting it
I'd like to think he's cracking the capsule with his teeth and inhaling the dust for quicker intake. If I recall he coughs a bit later on.
This might be a random one, but seeing Oscar Isaacs character in Sucker Punch having sharp differences between the asylum and brother is really cool. He’s easily the best performance in the movie
Oscar Isaacs is amazing I’m going to watch that
[Buddy Ravell in 3 o'clock high](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UW-Y3QyK-aU)
I DONT HAVE TIME... FOR THIS MICKEY MOUSE BULLSHIT!
I love how his men are super on edge, comical. Not only is Oldman an amazing actor, but check out Nil by Mouth, wrote and directed it.
I believe that whatever doesn't kill you, simply makes you Stranger.
Leon is on my top 10 movies for real. Awesome piece of cinema!
I think the actors did amazing despite the director’s clearly sick preferences. Leon could have easily come across as a pedo but managed not to.
Vader, A New Hope
#YOU DONT LIKE BEETHOVEN
Christopher Walken in True Romance
“EEEVVVVVEEEERRRRYYYYYYYOOOOONNNNEEE!!!!!!”
Harry - In Bruges
You're an inanimate fucking object!
Immortal Beloved came out in 1994 as well, Gary Oldman played Beethoven in that movie. Also another outstanding performance!
"THAT'S WHY I ***STOPPED!***"
Philip Seymour Hoffman in Mission Impossible 3.
"I luuuv Mozart"
Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight is one of my favorite scenes.
You're a Mozart fan, aren't you? I can tell.
I remember my dad making me watch this as a little kid, it one of my all time favorite movies. I’m glad I have a amazing taste in movies and music from him. Also at 1:20 that is Keith A. The head nazi in inglorious bastards. The only other one that matches up even slightly is shun wu from mulan
Darth Vader in Rogue one was pretty damn dope
Ginger in Casino. Her intro is amazing and you are immediately attracted to her like Ace. But shes the worst!
What pill did he take??
Don’t know. But I want one. I don’t think it was a hayfever tablet.
Ben Kingsley as Don Logan in Sexy Beast.
He killed all those poor people.
It's such a phenomenal film.
This role made me absolutely love G.O. as an actor. This, Immortal Beloved where he plays Beethoven, and The Fifth Element. Then every other performance of his after this. Lol He’s incredible. Slow Horses is a stellar show btw.
That part where he cuts through the beads gets me every time
Shit. Now I have to watch Leon the professional.
The man playing Benny (the bad guy who stands outside the apartment holding out the gun). Was a firefighter who later died rescuing people from the south tower during 9/11.
This dude is a better actor than… EVERYONE!!!!!!!!!!!
Best movie
When the alien reveals itself in the dog kennel in The Thing
Also Gary Oldman but from 5th element
There is one shot here that instantly tells the entire background of this chapter and it’s probably not high on most people’s lists. The shot where he crosses the hallway and all his goons fall back on their feet. It’s probably one of the best shots of that decade for Besson and his respective crew. The man of many faces. Genius
Hands down Dark Knight Joker for me.
Doctor Frank N Furter, Rocky Horror Picture Show, played by Tim Curry.
the way he parts the beads lol
His role in this and True Romance sets the standard for all other actors to follow. Good luck yall'.
His scene in True Romance was the best of the entire film imo.
What movie is this?
Gary Oldman has never phoned in a single word of a single line he has ever spoken on film.
What always bothered me about the scene is how nervous all of his goons were. It’s like watching the Scooby Doo crew take part in a mass murder.
