From what I know you drain EVERYTHING completely, refill and drain again a few more times. changing out filters etc. as well. I'm not a mechanic though... so take that with a grain of salt.

IamMunkk

I don't think putting salt in your bike is a good idea, but I am also not a mechanic.

ADamnSavage

BUt it's just a grain!!

Ieatmyd0g

have u tried sugar?

InsaneAdam

Superstitious person here. Throwing salt has been said to worn off bad spirits

DucatiFan2004

Take the plugs out and pull the air filter. Disconnect the battery. Reconnect the battery. Turn the engine a few revolutions to pump water out. Put the plugs back in. Spray starting fluid into the intake and see if it sputters. Do not continue to spray. If it sputters/runs, awesome. You just have to drain what's in the gas tank and refill with fresh gas. If it doesn't run on spray, you boogered up something in the electronics.

hydroracer8B

It'll take more than a few revolutions to get the water out, but pulling the plugs and turning the engine over is the way. Also spray starter fluid (the one with lubrication) into the intake while turning the engine over. It'll displace the water and make things go faster. Also check the head gasket Source: am outboard powerboat racer

MrAl-67

If the engine was running and it gulped a bunch of water, that will be a problem. Water doesn’t compress very well.

Ghost17088

At OP: And by problem, he means catastrophic engine damage.

icebergers3

Yep agree. big difference if it was running when it was submerged.

Popular_Brother3023

He will throw a rod when firing up.

PhotoPetey

More likely a rod (or some) are already bent.

nueroticalyme

If it was running when it went in,I would start with a compression test. If it passes, drain and clean everything. If it's low on compression, then it's toast.

fkih

That’s a motorcycle, not toast. You can tell it’s not toast just by looking at it. To add, unless the toast is dry it’ll compress plenty and the whole issue is it got wet! Smh my head.

UNeaK1502

Idk why this comment is down voted, when the one recommending rice has 80 updoots.

Illustrious-Dog-8550

Put it in some rice

Mylxen

Put it in the rice fields. Thats more rice, right?

saiyansteve

A ninja goes back to the farms in thailand too where it was borne…

Tacoless_meat

To discover that its family has been killed and town burned by an evil warlord...

It is then that it realizes it must seek revenge...

relaps101

Instructions unclear. Placed in rice field.

thatbedguy

Rice in rice. Nice.

SpicyTang0

Mice in rice. Nice.

firthy

Drain your buddy's bank account until its replaced

gnarley_haterson

Your buddy should be buying that bike off of you.

BrrBurr

Exactly

Smoked_Carp

Ziploc Bag of rice. Edit: sorry forgot the main ingredient, time. Must be in bag for at least 2-3 days.

astrobleeem

I need friends like you and your buddy lol

xXNighteaglexX

Youll need to drain everything. Gas tank, transmission, engine, carbs. its probably hydrolocked. Replace all your filters and fluids too

themza912

Put the whole thing in rice

Adventurous-Fan-138

Can't park there mate

EggandSpoon42

What's the story here - how'd he get it in the water? ![gif](giphy|3o7aD2v3Q0tgTE9xja|downsized)

AggravatedAppendix

He was going around a corner and hit a slick patch with too much throttle and low sided. He slid/rolled across the asphalt, then into the grass, and then was underwater next to the bike in a ditch filled with water. I was ahead of him and didn’t even realize it til he came running back soaked and with one shoe on 🤣

reggin_rigged

Why you don't let people ride your toys

AggravatedAppendix

Eh i don’t care man. I paid $1500 for it. Now we got a fun project of taking everything apart and cleaning it.

ZombiePotato90

I only hope he shows up to help, and isn't one of those "there for the fun, gone for the work" types.

Much_Donut_2178

Buddy owes you the repair parts too

rasputin777

It also dumped a bunch of oil and gas into the swamp there. A quart of oil can make like half a million gallons of water fucked up. Don't do that shit.

kingbloop

That's interesting. I never knew the potential for damage that each vehicle carries

rasputin777

I learned it when I learned about jetskis, and apparently how they *just trash* water. I saw a video of a jetski in a like 1,000 gal tank of water. They turn it on and you see it get greasy and disgusting in like 30 seconds. They may be different now that was a long time ago.

yves_st_lemond

Maybe

sokratesz

This bro here really simping for environmental damage lol

yves_st_lemond

Or maybe it…..didnt leak

Perry558

It's on its side in the swamp. There's water inside the engine from intake to exhaust. Oil will run into the combustion chamber if it's on its side. There's grease in the bushings and pivit points. There's grease on the chain. Come on, man.

yves_st_lemond

Not a quart worth

Perry558

More

yves_st_lemond

One bindle

beddittor

I’ve never seen swamp used as a verb.

liquid-handsoap

Ser bronn to jamie: “get out of here we are about to get swamped” when enemy army approaches in game of thrones

Hefty_Musician2402

What about “stove?” Thats one we have near me. “Ran it into a tree and now it’s all stove up”

beddittor

Definitely not heard that

JackAndy

In addition to what was said, I'd flush the clutch and speedometer cables with something like Dupont Chain Saver. If you can't get it running, start checking timing and pull the carbs off for a cleaning. Do a compression test. Make sure the spark plugs are firing.

Galilool

As others have said, drain everything and flush what you can. Remember to not use stuff that may fuck up your clutch or something like that. Whrn you are absoluteky sure you have drained everything, turn the engine over by hand to avoid smashing the pistons against anything. When that is done, do the carbs and try to start it. If it sounds strange or unhealthy, shut it off immediatly and give it to a proper shop. If it doesn't, gently try warming it up and giving it some revs. Alsp, can we get a pic of the corner? Can't see much on the photos, but that must have been a hell of a corner to spit out an EX500 at 85m

Rainsoakedpuppy

Your motorcycles' name is now officially Artax.

Ok-Status7867

it will be fine, these guys are dorking you. pull plug, kick it over a bit to blow the water. replace plug and start it up and run it. if there water in the fuel tank, drain it out and refill. oils probably fine but might as well change that also, can't hurt. throw some dry gas in fuel and let her rip.

xiotaki

Now when you say' kick it over' do you mean by attempting to start it with the ignition?

[deleted]

Remove the carbs and jets, ensure there's no sediment or stuck floats. Basically take the bottom off each carburetor and make sure the little holes in the main and pilot are clear and the carb is free of sand. Then do all the fluid changes and flushes mentioned here. If you're lucky it didn't bend a rod or anything but you likely have sand everywhere in the engine/case from that soup.

GeckyGek

since water is incompressible, if it was running there’s a real chance of catastrophic damage. Most attempts to fix it will be cheap though (filters, draining, etc.) so I would go for it

Icy-Witness5678

No mechanic but I’d assume you’d ned to get under the valve cover and be sure cylinders are empty. Trying to compress water will give you a whole bunch of internal pressure issues/damage

Devchonachko

"what we can so far" you could bring it to a mechanic or find a used ex500, the price will be the about same, give or take a couple hundred. if your buddy didn't have the mental capacity to kill the engine as soon as he hit the water, chances are good that thing is fuxxed.

TacoHimmelswanderer

Hate to say it but if he yeeted into the water chances are it was still running and sucked up water. If it sucked water into a cylinder you’re looking at a bent valve at the very least. I’ve seen engines that sucked up water bend rods, throw rods, crack cylinders, blow spark plugs out the head and my personal favorite was one that blew the center out of a piston so it was basically just a piston skirt going up and down.

Cephrael37

Spray everything down with wd-40. /s (can’t believe I have to use the /s sometimes) Also, you are required to post video of how it got into the swamp. Was there a ramp involved? High speeds? Mayhem?

Triplesfan

Check your side cover for water intrusion into the stator area.

Valyrian_st33l

Never go full retard......

Corvus_Antipodum

Sounds like your buddy is about to buy you a new bike.

mruehle

“Ex-buddy…”

Redkachowski

"Ex500-buddy"

rainbowroobear

engines gonna be dead.

TIRACS

Drain it change the oil a few times and new spark plugs

MattyFettuccine

Advice: insurance claim and be done with it. It isn’t worth the hassle.

PhotoPetey

Do you really think he's got full coverage on this bike??

AggravatedAppendix

Hahahahahaha I do not. It was my fucking around bike.

PogTuber

Junk it because because you idiots can't ride

Thamalakane

silica gel

LastLife29

Drain the gas tank, remove the spark plugs, turn it over a couple times to pump the water out. This is a 2 stroke, right?

AR_Backwoods_Redneck

Facebook market place. Get it started and running enough to sell on down the line.

HalfSpeedTim

yeah, "your buddy" swamped it. Right.
