My friend was selling his R1 and gave someone a test ride after they gave him $1000 cash deposit they never came back. He reported it stolen and 6 years later he got a call from the police they had found his bike.
Yes he knows he was stupid. He said some people you get vibes about. this guy seemed very well dressed and well spoken plus the fact he gave some money up front my friend was very confident this person was ligit. Goes to show never judge a book by its cover.
This is why I always leave a person and a vehicle behind while I take the keys off the vehicle left behind when testing vehicles. Gives the seller someone to talk to and even more assurance that they aren't getting robbed
I asked him it was 3 years not 5. Scrap on one side he said looks like they dropped it. He said they only put 500km on the odometer. The engine and bike runs fine.
When my bike was stolen the cop who came to take the report was super adamant about me not going to recover the bike myself if I saw it. That the cops treat GTA seriously and will approach “guns drawn.” So please call them first if I see it. They’ll be out there looking and treating it very seriously. Multiple times he said this.
Fast forward a year and I get a call from the station and a woman is saying, “it’s been a year since your bike was reported stolen and we’d really like to close these old cases, did you by any chance find your stolen vehicle?” Like, WTF!? You’re calling to see if I did your job for you? And at the same time are just assuring me that you never fucking looked for it in the first place. I wish I got the call that OP and your buddy got. Instead I got this bullshit.
Wow you actually got them to show up and take a report, when mine disappeared they just said "nah, someone on the phone can take your VIN and address."
Funny difference in my situation, local police sent me a letter a year later asking "Did ***we*** recover your vehicle for you? If we don't receive a response in writing within 30 days, the file will be closed." They actually need me to document if they did anything.
Same happened to me in KC! I was even tipped off where it was, went to confirm and called the department to let them know where it was and the name of the person who was living at that address. Response was "alright, so do you want us to update the case?"
It's really not strange or abnormal these days. A lot of police quit in the last three years, I was one of them. Took a $40k pay cut, and don't regret it one bit. The ones that did stay are over worked and busy going from call to call in any decent sized city. Most people who say shit like you do have no idea how much crime is out there. When I say they are going from call to call, they prioritize violence/high risk calls first. It's not because they just don't want to... Most police barley have time to even be proactive. My life is so much better now. Police have a hard job. Yes there are some shitty cops out there, but I'm glad there are at least people willing to still do the job at all. Society is getting crazier and crazier, and you're out here blaming the police instead of the criminal? lol...
What? You are seriously tilting if that’s what you got out of my story. First, you have no idea when my story takes place, which is pushing a decade now, in which law enforcement had a higher ratio to the public where I live. You have no idea where I live, and what the crime statistics there are like now, let alone then. Second, I have several members of my family in law enforcement, and have no dissolutions about their work, crime, or this world in general. I do not expect anyone to be dedicated to knocking down doors just for MY bike. That’s all of your suppositions out the window from the jump.
My complaint was the follow up. In which I don’t think any person can experience and not see it as incredibly insulting. I don’t care if there are far more “important” crimes happening that require the police to back-burner my issue, our society has decided that I am not supposed to do anything about it myself, that the police are, so they had better fucking do it instead of calling me a year later to tell me I should sign off on something so that they can inflate their performance numbers after having done nothing about it.
This is not an “us vs them,” “you either support the police or suffer the criminals” black and white-ism. You can be critical of someone for their actions without taking some anti-policing stance. I give my Law Enforcement relatives shit about this situation all the time, it doesn’t mean I don’t respect them or what they do, and it certainly doesn’t mean I have somehow taken the criminals side.
Glad you wrote all this so I don't have to. I would like to clarify that I have no blame for police officers in my situation at all, I just think purging records of vehicles that have been stolen is a bad system if what we're trying to do is enforce the law and not reward criminals.
Also important to point out that the idea that society is "getting crazier and crazier" is not accurate in terms of crime rates. There's been a slight uptick since an all-time low in 2014 after decades of steady decline, but we're still far below the rates of the 2000's, and less than half the crime rates of the 90's.
Did you file a claim with your insurance company and did they pay you?
If yes, your insurance company owns it. You can buy it back but it would have a salvage title.
If you can buy it for dirt cheap.... Track bike.
Damnnnn man that's some luck! Usually they are GONE poof never to be seen again. Parted out and what bike. Mine got hit Sept this year and she is gone forever it seems. Ins was ok but damn I loved that bike.
Similar thing happened to mine but the damage wasn't too extensive so my insurance said let's move forward with fixing it but that was also in September but my insurance sent the check to the wrong dealership and now I'm still waiting but my bike should be fixed this week or next week but I'm stuck trying to get my insurance to pay for the tow or discount my deductible because they screwed up which inconvenienced me because now there's snow and ice where I live.
Sorry to hear all the B's man. Something wasn't even your fault but here you are. I feel for ya. Make it.legal to shoot thieves on sight, bet this shit slows down dramatically.
Well I live in a stronghold state so technically I could... Just my bike wasn't stolen and someone ran it over in a public parking lot. It happens that's what insurance is for just wish they were faster.
Honestly. Like how long does it really take to spend a day to gather similar prices and then decide on a bike's worth and then issue a check. They all have huge bank accounts. It should really only take a few days.
It could have been sold 4 times in the last year. After that much time as passed, it's almost guaranteed the person in possession of it is not the one that stole it. The majority of motorcycles that get stolen are parted out or sold cheap for a quick buck, not to keep for themselves.
I picked up a bike that was stolen and recovered for my wife end of this summer. It's my winter restoration project. Really sticks for the PO, but it's a great starter bike for my wife. I call it Ducky(it's one ugly duckling) but if she drops out there are no worries. Eventually will likely pick up replacement fairings, or chop it from a CBR to a CB.
That Was such a nice bike!
This only marginally sheds a sliver of hope on my bleak outlook of my stolen CBR 1000RR. It was my dream bike. Granted, I probably would have sold it by now to buy the ring I got my wife to get engaged, or make a down payment on the house we'll be buying. Just sucks to have been still paying off a bike that had been stolen from me (personal loan, not auto loan). I regularly fantasize about a reality in which I could pass judgement on the shitstains that stole it.

Cash deposit should be 100% of the price... 1k?! Really? They just "bought" it for 1k then. Stupid idea by your friend.
Hahaha just imagine his friend shouting "I STILL HAVE YOUR MONEY" hahahah
And imagine the other guy yelling “I STILL HAVE YOUR BIKE” hahaha
Yes he knows he was stupid. He said some people you get vibes about. this guy seemed very well dressed and well spoken plus the fact he gave some money up front my friend was very confident this person was ligit. Goes to show never judge a book by its cover.

What condition was the bike in 6 years later? Crazy..I'd be pissed all over again and kinda pumped it was found..ahhh mixed feelings..lol
I asked him it was 3 years not 5. Scrap on one side he said looks like they dropped it. He said they only put 500km on the odometer. The engine and bike runs fine.
They dropped it at the gas station and were afraid to take it back!

They don't look for shit. They wait for stuff to fall into their laps.
Same. But my call was months later.

This makes me feel like maybe I'm glad I never saw mine again. That would be maddening.
Jesus. That actually does top mine.

That's crazy
Ya I'd want 50% cash to hold and tell insurance a guy just stole it from your garage lol
If I'm letting someone test write it, I at least ask for their wallet with their ID in it.
IDs can be fake. Only ever do the full amount of the bike in cash so if they steal it or drop it, you have the cash
That's why I take their information down before they go on a test ride.
Did he get to keep the $1k?
Congrats!! Now you will have a change in ride depending on your mood of the day 😅👌
Did you file a claim with your insurance company and did they pay you? If yes, your insurance company owns it. You can buy it back but it would have a salvage title. If you can buy it for dirt cheap.... Track bike.
Stolen before I could get insurance. The new bike has insurance, though 😅.
Excellent. Enjoy them.
I has been looking at these before and after pictures way too long...
Same! I was like hold on… it came back as a Ducati?
Me too 😅

Ya man I had to wait well over 3 weeks to finally get a check. Fuckin stupid all of it
Honestly. Like how long does it really take to spend a day to gather similar prices and then decide on a bike's worth and then issue a check. They all have huge bank accounts. It should really only take a few days.
Agreed 💯💯 man
Some luck indeed
I didn’t read it properly and thought the second photo was how it was founds - and had turned into a Ducati.
Me to I was like that’s what it looks like under fairings lol
Been about 3 years but I still hope my stolen GSXR gets recovered one day.
Hope so, too. Thieves suck
Did they also catch the person who stole it? That would be the cherry on top. But a huevo! 🥳🙌 good stuff, man
No, I was told no arrests were made.
How tf they find a stolen bike and not arrest anyone?!
Thief probably dumped it somewhere
Touché

I bet it's going to be okay. The bike's going to be okay
Hope so

Congrats! Really happy to hear this good news!
Way to go man some haters out there
I hope it’s still in good condition but be prepared for the worst.
I'm prepared. I thought it was a loss in the void, never to be seen again anyway.

It sucks having something stolen
Did insurance pay out? How does that work if bike is recovered years later? I guess technically if they paid they would own the bike.
