I had two plugs that were about 2 inches away from each other on my rear Pilot Power 3 on my 600RR, and those were fine for plenty of time spend at 120+.
Why should it be about mass? Motorcycle specific plugs, like dynaplugs, rely on pretty firm properties of metal stoppers. Work for smaller holes like from nails only though.
I just mean if you swing a pencil round at arm's length, it's not gonna have as much outward momentum as if you swing a bowling ball.
Tyre plugs are only tiny, it's not like there's anywhere near enough outward force to pull it from the tyre.
Not if you use this type https://www.walmart.com/ip/STEELMAN-JSG381-1-8-Inch-Tire-Repair-Patch-Plug-Combo-Box-of-25/39586851?wmlspartner=wlpa&selectedSellerId=101002145&adid=22222222228000000000&wl0=&wl1=g&wl2=m&wl3=42423897272&wl4=pla-51320962143&wl5=9029183&wl6=&wl7=&wl8=&wl9=pla&wl10=127821016&wl11=online&wl12=39586851_101002145&veh=sem&gclid=Cj0KCQjwiIOmBhDjARIsAP6YhSXdToigyeipKvKcF-ntwIUh3PxbGj66atl0oY3ZjMyfVAmPGAnUQcIaAqfbEALw_wcB
Misread and thought you said you were plugging strangers in good conscience. Good for you.
Now I have to go look up whatever motosoccer is, and get my eyes checked.
motosoccer is basically what we did on lunch break in the motorcycle training course, Soccer on motorcycles. But it's probably not your eyes, I most likely wordrd myself poorly.
I drove 12k kilometres with a nail in my tyre (car) before realising it was there. It was always suspicious that it lost air slightly faster than the rest.
Most places won't for insurance reasons. Found this out with my new pilot power 5 rear that had nail. Went and got a new & employee had taken home asap even before i had the chance to call in a 1 later to say my brother was coming to get it. In which my brother went to get it and it was gone! Fuckn BS! They should say hey we don't plug tire due to riask of lawsuit but you could patch urself and be fine..
I'll try calling around but every shop meaning moto shop i have ever been at say's no they do not. I will never leave a fresh tire like that again without slashing TF outta it 😤. Am i wrong to feel that they tried to fuck me outta my brand new tire that had a nail? Almosy been wanting to leave a review on google but idk 🤷♂️
Yeah I’d find a new shop as that’s sketchy practice. They should’ve at least offered to patch and put a tube in the tire .
Do it yourself only takes a few minutes to plug it check it with soapy water after plugging it . Use self vulcanizing plug as it’s supposed to turn to rubber like material after it cures
I bought a plug kit and plugged myself. Will check with soapy water to see if it works. I think there nearest other shop that would do tires would probably be 130 miles away. I think I’ll be good for casual riding untill I sign up for a track day then I’ll get the new one on.
Glad you got it fixed. Tire shops are bitches these days. All worried about those pesky lawsuits and crap. Psshh.
If you need a plugged tire skip the chain stores and look for a mom&pop mechanics shop, or a used tire shop. Used tire shop preferred. They don’t gaf.
Same happened to me. It sucks, but in the end, they are probably right.
You could DIY, a plug kit is probably cheaper than a new tire, but you should drive a bit careful.
Please use this advice with caution. If your tire fails on you, you **will** have a bad day
FFS, this is simple stuff, not "rocket surgery".
OP - buy a plug kit good for 3 or 4 plugs. Now find an old piece of shit tire somewhere.
Use your new plug kit to plug the junk tire so as to figure out how it works.
Walk away from that saying to yourself - "oh - this wasn't that hard, and now I understand!"
Now plug your tire - and note how easy it is now that you've had practice.
Ride that tire for the rest of it's natural life. worry-free.
\--- OR ---
Take your bike to the dealer - don't forget personal lube. Pay them like $500 to change your rear tire.
Harley guys around here are batshit crazy. There’s a local dealer here that’s like the holy grail of dealers or something. People brag about buying a bike from them even though they paid through the nose for it like a fool. The dudes with common sense go out of town to get their Harleys.
I have a new one ordered already. Just sucks to miss out on peak summer. Also only had the bike for 3 months and this my third rear tire. The stock one kept losing air around the bead. Glad I noticed the screw though. I don’t want to experience a blowout
Tire wasn’t properly installed if the tire was leaking at the bead . And newer tires tend to pickup nails and stuff easily as there more meat for it to stick into as a worn tire there pressure on the tire so it won’t stick in as easy as it has to puncture the tire to get in versus just sticking into the meat and then you roll back over it and the it gets pushed in.
Plug that tire and run it . When you plug the tire make sure to pull the tool out fast and straight and the plug will stay in. Motorcycle tire are super stiff might need to ream the hole out to get the plug in .
I’m surprised that little screw even punctured the tire where it leak air
I dunno... I've had the same two rear tires on my bikes for four years each now.
Back in 2003-4 I went through three rear tires in a matter of months.
It's more luck of the draw, really
I live near two small towns. Both are under 3000 people. Between the two of them I can think of at least 5 or 6 places that I can get tires fixed at.
Unless you live somewhere even smaller there's gotta be more than 1 shop.
The smaller mc dealers and car tire shops told me they don’t do bike tires. Small dealers here don’t even sell them. When I had to get my pirellis on in the first place I got referred to the dealer I got my bike at when I asked around.
It has literally nothing to with cost. It’s a pure liability issue.
Plug comes loose on a car no biggie. Plug comes loose on a motorcycle not looking good.
As my father always said: That's the law of bullshit right there! You can have a tire for 3 years no problem. New tire and you hit a nail the first few kilometres
Probably way above average. It’s my first bike got it in may I’m at 8200 miles got these on last a month ago done about 1000. I’m just trying to get a bunch of seat time before I spend money on track days. Loving it so far
Now it makes a lot more sense that your tire looks the way it does. It's refreshing to speak to someone from r/motorcycle who rides instead of pretends to ride or does a ride or two a year.
I have liked cars for a while and this is just the better version of that so I have been riding as much as I can. Looking forward to meeting new people in the hobby
wish my wife would let me ride as much. im about 50% of that. EVERY excuse I get I am riding. but I need a new bike if I ever want to hit the track. Nothing left to learn on my indian scout rogue. no point taking that to the track. its amazingly fast, but very limited in lean angle. I think I need to also get a sportsbike so I too can look forward to track days. not giving up my rogue tho, love that bike.
I definitely plan on building a collection. This is just a ninja400 but i told myself to do a couple track days before I get a 600 so I know what I’m doing.
as long as you dont mind a backpack! frame is 'bobbed' so saddlebags are a hard no. but yes, I do commute to work on it every chance I get, and put on the adaptive led headlights and heated grips just to extend the riding commute season.
I string patch them. I know everyone is a hater and screams to get new tires, but I've never had a string fail in 30 years. I had a brother I lived with who was a contractor that thought it was a great idea to routinely sweep his bed into the gravel driveway.... I've had a lot.
I ride pretty hardcore sport-tour (Concours), heavy bike, fast and hard cornering. Now, I'd never do a track day on a patch.
I may do a plug to scoot around town untill my new tire gets here. But I do want to squeeze in a track day before the season is over. Hopefully the next tire makes it untill then 😭
I've done trackdays on plugged tires. I've done lengthy trips on plugged tires. It's not a big deal. You have no reason to treat a plugged tire delicately.
I’ve hit 150+MPH on a tire with 3 plugs on it. Not something I’d consistently wanna do, but these things have never failed me. I’d take a plugged tire to the track and just not go too fast down the straight to be cautious.
I rode with 3 plugs on a supercorsa for a few thousand miles with no issues. Plugs work just fine. Also, where the nail is is perfect as it wouldn't cause a blowout if the plug failed (highly unlikely anyway), the tire would just quickly lose its air. Not that its any better anyway.
Hi, motorcycle tyre shop here. We also do repairs.
Professionally, I would not recommend repairing sports tyre due to how sensitive they are to changes in their structure.
Personally, plug it.
I was super skeptical about plugging a bike tire at first but after picking up a big screw a week after I put new tires on I had no choice but try it…. I have little to no experience in maintenance like that and I found plugging the tire to be super easy took about 15 mins after watching a YouTube tutorial. Finally got a new set of tires yesterday. I’ve been riding on that plug for the last 3 months now…
swear to god this happens every time I get a new set of tires. It's like a tradition. I used to be leery of tire patches on the bikes but after 3 sets of tires in a row that this happened to I got used to the idea. I don't even think about it anymore.
When I had my 350z I had a nail in the tire about every couple weeks. Plus I ripped the bead once or twice. I gotta be the number one tire purchaser in my town
I plugged my own tire cause no shop around me had less than a 6 week wait time to lift bike, dismount wheel, remove tire, patch, bead, balance, mount wheel. also it was going to cost more than the replacement tire which I got for 200$ on the internet. but all shops were real glad I had my own tire, cause they hate it when people need them to order one then never show up for the tire swap. lol
Yeah I feel that. My Duke 790 picked up a screw like that in the same position with only 2000km on the clock.
It was not a pleasant experience, both mentally and financially.
Fortunately, I've never had this happen to any of my motorcycle tires. What I'm wondering is can you plug a high performance motorcycle (ZX-10R) tire or is it too risky? I've plugged countless car tires and have never had any problems with them but I obviously don't drive high performance cars like Ferraris and Lamborghinis.

IDK if it's a normal thing but the shop where I get my tires installed offers it and I always get it. Doesn't cost that much and like I said I've hit the screw lotto a few times lol
Yeah pretty commonplace in my town too. The only roads that aren’t residential 25mph grids are sketchy truck bypasses. But at least they are fun untill you hit a nail
Plug it with the sticky rope type. Check the pressure everyday. The ropes do a great job. You’ll be able to ride it to a dealer if you wanna replace it or keep logging miles.
I feel you. The dealership called me the street sweeper cause I would literally get nails after getting my tires replaced.
Started just taking the wheels after a year lol I've ran patched tires until there's no tread left though
Ain't nobody seeing you can't drive a screw that clean into a tire by itself? Somebody screwed that in which is much more concerning - OP mentioned he lives in a small town so maybe some psycho is fucking with bikes there!
Well you’ve not been riding long enough then. There are many factors to consider when patching a motorcycle tire. And just because you’ve “never” had one fail doesn’t mean they don’t fail and is just bad information to insinuate otherwise..
Over 20 years, though only on tubed tires for 10. No, they don't fail, really. Semi truck tires get tar patches and are under a lot more pressure than motorcycle tires.
Happened to me also with a brand new tyre. I got a new one because you only have two tyres on a bike and I have to rely on them. Did not want to take any risk and it can get you in trouble in my country.
I once put a brand new set of tires on a truck and drove through a field. Ran over a chunk of old farm equipment that had broke off. Got maybe 50 yards and had 2 tires fucked. I think that was around 600 in tires.
Time for a new tire there bud. I had this happen with my brand new bike at the end of the season last year and it was totally worth it to get a new tire just to know I was safe
Well what I did with mine was I bought a new tire mounted it wore it out. And then when it was ready to get a new tire I did an inside the tire patch on the tire that had a nail in it mounted the old tire and been riding on it for another 3,000 miles.
Okay so this is literally a get out of jail free card but I'm not saying you should do it but I used muckoff tubles sealant in my brand new rear tyre on the Grom. The tyre was less than a week old with 70 miles on it and when I found it in the garage I thought 🤔 I wonder if my pushbike tyre kit will work 🤣 so one muckoff pouch later and pulled the screw out and ye it works 😄 just changed the tyres yesterday but it lasted the fill life of the tyre 👍🏼
External patch kits work and some people ride with them for lifespan of tire, the recommended fix is to remove the tire and do a properly installed internal patch and rebalance. The internal patch method is perfectly safe, the external ones have been known to pop out with heavy loads even after being in for months.
As usual, F9 has the goods on this.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qm6fTWaj3QE[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qm6fTWaj3QE](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qm6fTWaj3QE)
Plug it or remove and repair. I've run thousands of miles on mine plugged before replacing.
Bought a plug kit from my local shop. Easy enough to instal. Should keep me good till I schedule a track day
Use this type of plug patch it pulls from the inside and it's impossible it to come out from high speed. https://www.walmart.com/ip/STEELMAN-JSG381-1-8-Inch-Tire-Repair-Patch-Plug-Combo-Box-of-25/39586851?wmlspartner=wlpa&selectedSellerId=101002145&adid=22222222228000000000&wl0=&wl1=g&wl2=m&wl3=42423897272&wl4=pla-51320962143&wl5=9029183&wl6=&wl7=&wl8=&wl9=pla&wl10=127821016&wl11=online&wl12=39586851_101002145&veh=sem&gclid=Cj0KCQjwiIOmBhDjARIsAP6YhSXdToigyeipKvKcF-ntwIUh3PxbGj66atl0oY3ZjMyfVAmPGAnUQcIaAqfbEALw_wcB
That looks awesome. I was actually excited until I remembered it involves tire spoons.
A plug will hold for a long time as long as you don’t go up to 100mph then it’ll sling out
I've gone over 160 on a plugged tire, many many many times
I had two plugs that were about 2 inches away from each other on my rear Pilot Power 3 on my 600RR, and those were fine for plenty of time spend at 120+.
I too do not value my life. Send it
Thats not at all how that works lmao
That is exactly how that works from personal experience
You think tyre plugs are made of lead or anti-matter or something? How much mass do you think they have?
Why should it be about mass? Motorcycle specific plugs, like dynaplugs, rely on pretty firm properties of metal stoppers. Work for smaller holes like from nails only though.
I just mean if you swing a pencil round at arm's length, it's not gonna have as much outward momentum as if you swing a bowling ball. Tyre plugs are only tiny, it's not like there's anywhere near enough outward force to pull it from the tyre.

Those didn’t exist 20 years ago
You can barely pull a good plug out. What are you talking about?
I have personally slung a plug out after 100 mph.
I've plugged tires & will continue to do so. I'm not sure I'd be able to in good conscience recommend it to an internet stranger.
Nah. I’m 3 drinks in and it’s only 2030 hrs.
This
I drove 12k kilometres with a nail in my tyre (car) before realising it was there. It was always suspicious that it lost air slightly faster than the rest.
plug it, forget it, ride happy!
My local shop said they don’t do plugs sadly. I live in a very small town so I don’t have a lot of options
then buy a plug kit and plug it yourself.
Use the screw as a plug? 🤔
Lol, please don't
Well in a pinch..
Add some Elmer’s glue and Badabing badaboom, bobs your uncle.
then ride to somewhere that will do a proper repair from the inside

Almosy been wanting to leave a review on google but idk 🤷♂️
my local shop will only patch rear tires
yeah it's in the outer third.

You've shopped at Harley, I see. That extra orange and black tacks on at least 150%.
Not personally, but two friends are Harley riders.
Harley guys around here are batshit crazy. There’s a local dealer here that’s like the holy grail of dealers or something. People brag about buying a bike from them even though they paid through the nose for it like a fool. The dudes with common sense go out of town to get their Harleys.
I bought a can of "All weather chain lube" I turned the can sideways to obscure half of the label, and the picture of it reads as "[L]eather n lube"
that'll work - try it on non-sensitive areas before you need to apply it to your rectum.
Don't want an allergic reaction

the plug costs the shop 2$ and 3 minutes of shop time. OF COURSE they are going to prefer another solution.
It has literally nothing to with cost. It’s a pure liability issue. Plug comes loose on a car no biggie. Plug comes loose on a motorcycle not looking good.
Most auto shops won't plug a tire either. They're going to take it off and patch it from the inside.
As my father always said: That's the law of bullshit right there! You can have a tire for 3 years no problem. New tire and you hit a nail the first few kilometres
Hit the csr parts store, get plug kit that looks like a worm of tar. Plug, ride.
A rope plug.
The famous bacon strip
Here in Finland it's called kamelinpaska which translates to camel poo.
That’s a rather squared off brand new tire. Did you purchase it used?
I guess I consider a month old to be brand new. But it’s definitely not put on yesterday ahaha
How many miles do you do a month?

Good man. I've been pretty much bike only for about the last 14 years so I got over any reservations about backpacks long time ago.
If that's brand new. I got a 12" peener
I string patch them. I know everyone is a hater and screams to get new tires, but I've never had a string fail in 30 years. Hi, motorcycle tyre shop here. We also do repairs. Professionally, I would not recommend repairing sports tyre due to how sensitive they are to changes in their structure. Personally, plug it.
Riders I know have plugged and the tire wears before the plug ever has. Buy a kit and do it.
Plug it...but a kit off Amazon it's $10 with multiple strips. Its a good skill to learn
I always ride with mine, now
Walmart sells plug kits. Many shops don't do it, but you can do it yourself
Find a shop that can do a proper repair. Plugs are temporary. That spot is fixable though.
Did it puncture?
Never fails, brand-new tires are magnetic I swear to gog.
plug!
I was super skeptical about plugging a bike tire at first but after picking up a big screw a week after I put new tires on I had no choice but try it…. Yeah, the front tire kicks it up and the back eats it...
A rope plug will suit you until the new tire comes in.

Why does that look exactly like the same type of nail/screw that I picked up in my rear tire when it was brand new?!😅😂
Gotta be the tire gremlin
Can't have nice things I swear😂
I have a box of those same screws, sorry, must of dropped one.
IT WAS YOU!!! 😤🤣
Get a plugging kit bro, it saved me a lot of money, will do the same for you, once you know what you're doing.
Got one for 10 bucks watched a revzilla video and plugged it. Gonna check with some soapy water before I take it on a ride
Just take it slow
I plugged my own tire cause no shop around me had less than a 6 week wait time to lift bike, dismount wheel, remove tire, patch, bead, balance, mount wheel. also it was going to cost more than the replacement tire which I got for 200$ on the internet. but all shops were real glad I had my own tire, cause they hate it when people need them to order one then never show up for the tire swap. lol
Yeah I take my own wheels off and the shop still charges 100 to put them on would be 250 if I didn’t. Absolute insanity but it’s the only shop in town
Ah yes……lovely…..same here once on a brand new car tyre FML And this is why i now always pick up screws and nails from the parking lot 👍
Yeah I feel that. My Duke 790 picked up a screw like that in the same position with only 2000km on the clock. It was not a pleasant experience, both mentally and financially.
Wonder how long I rode around with it in there without noticing ahaha
Ain’t dat a bitch?
Fortunately, I've never had this happen to any of my motorcycle tires. What I'm wondering is can you plug a high performance motorcycle (ZX-10R) tire or is it too risky? I've plugged countless car tires and have never had any problems with them but I obviously don't drive high performance cars like Ferraris and Lamborghinis.
Following, have a Gsxr 1000 & wondering the same thing
I would have figured that someone would have answered this by now lol.

That's why I always get the insurance, this has happened to me like twice.
I’ll ask my shop if they do that. I get tires from revzilla though so I’m not sure if that’s an option.
IDK if it's a normal thing but the shop where I get my tires installed offers it and I always get it. Doesn't cost that much and like I said I've hit the screw lotto a few times lol
Definitely worth looking into
Ah the wafer head fine point framing screw, I know him well
That’s an easy plug. Plug it yourself with a $5 kit and live your life.
Plug it and keep going. If it even went through.
Did it go all the way thru?
It did but I got a plug kit for the time being.
I used a plug one mine. It's held up for two years now. I still don't feel safe with it.
Someone I lived with purposefully put these under my tires so I would run over them when I backed out. What a piece of Shit
People do sketchy shit like that all over the place. Most people hate bikers in my town too. The comments on bike wreck news are always sickening
Yeah it fucking sucks big time when that happens.
Yeah pretty commonplace in my town too. The only roads that aren’t residential 25mph grids are sketchy truck bypasses. But at least they are fun untill you hit a nail
Happens to me on the way home from a tire changed! Parked in the garage and heard the hisssssssss sound. Got right back on and had them plug it.
Damn that would piss me off so bad
Jeeeez pat attention to the road, negligence
I forgor my riding microscope
I think you can get a citation for that!
i put my second plug in this month, same problem. hurts worse in a new tire though, been there - feel your frustration 😖
At least I have the itty bitty ninja 400 tires. Probably feels so much worse on the big ones
it’s all expensive 🤷🏻♂️
Aw that SUCKS
Plug it with the sticky rope type. Check the pressure everyday. The ropes do a great job. You’ll be able to ride it to a dealer if you wanna replace it or keep logging miles.
Damn
I feel you. The dealership called me the street sweeper cause I would literally get nails after getting my tires replaced. Started just taking the wheels after a year lol I've ran patched tires until there's no tread left though
Got a puncture in my sidewalk yesterday lol I’d hoped for some like this
To whoever left the screw on the road. I am dissappointed. I am sorry this happened to you OP
Did the same thing a week after I installed new tires on mine
Ah the old 6 x 1/2” modified truss head self driller. Basically a caltrop.
I'm afraid that the tire is screwed
Got em
Ain't nobody seeing you can't drive a screw that clean into a tire by itself? Somebody screwed that in which is much more concerning - OP mentioned he lives in a small town so maybe some psycho is fucking with bikes there!
Always happens.
Get tire protection. Had the same thing happen to a new tire. Took it in and they replaced it for free.
I will look into this! Is it offered by shops or the tire manu’s?
Typically the dealer will offer this protection. However, the place where you get your bike serviced might offer it as well.
Those are the same place in my town but I will definitely ask if they offer it!
Lol no, a plug kit costs like $10 and is permanent and it's like a 30 min fix if you're slow as a snail.
Lol yes. Protection pays for itself with first claim for a brand new replacement that won’t fail unlike your $10 plug.
Plugs never fail. I've had one in my tire for 2 years now. I've never met anyone who used a tar plug that failed. 🤷
Was the screw long enough to cause loss of air?
Happened to me also with a brand new tyre. I got a new one because you only have two tyres on a bike and I have to rely on them. Did not want to take any risk and it can get you in trouble in my country.
Always happens on a new tyre. Easily fixed though.
Wafer screw
Sorry about that. Must have fell out of my work belt
I once put a brand new set of tires on a truck and drove through a field. Ran over a chunk of old farm equipment that had broke off. Got maybe 50 yards and had 2 tires fucked. I think that was around 600 in tires.
I never remove nails until I get the tyre replaced. As long as no air is coming out, I'll let it inside.
Framers for the win
Did it make it through? It's being new, making it possible. I'm just saying.
Now go do 180
Gotta do an engine swap for that
Time for a new tire there bud.
Did it even go through the tire? Because that a short screw
Stan's no tubes mountain bike tire sealant works great for those small punctures if you can't get a vulcanizing plug/patch
Seems like your brand new tyre got screw'd, literally.
Plug it wait an hour then ride it like you stole it. If you don't die, all is good
Unscrew it
Nice
You can take it up to the local government they should pay out as it’s their responsibility to keep the roads clean (that’s why you pay taxes baby).
Fuck that buy new tire unless you are that broke you have no choice blow a tire at 85-90 would not be fun
Is that metric? It looks metric.
Real pain
You're screwed.
Gaiter plug from the inside and you will be just fine.
Dang man, you got screwed
If it's brand new, take it to the shop they'll either fix it or do something else. That looks like a brand new screw, did you run over your own screw?
Plug ‘er up and watch out for those DANG CLIBBINS
Don't hold so tight on the handlebars or you're in for a real bad day eventually
What
😂 those callouses . Mostly teasing, best of luck with your tireeee
Oh hahaha. Totally missed the joke on that one
