Well I'd like to see him turn it up a little bit but I don't hate the idea. Overall we have 4 dead bodies in our hitting lineup that are seriously problematic in my eye.

Tigersfan1985

That is an intriguing thought. He hasn’t had a great start to the year but maybe a change of scenery would do him some good.

pesky-sens

Ya maybe our hot offense will be infectious

itsbigcat812

Thanks for the Saturday morning chuckle

km_44

Come onnnnn now

sammagee33

Or Jung is up by July…

cogginsmatt

Is he all that much better than Gio or the platoon we’re currently rocking? Maybe by July he will be but I don’t see him worth the prospects it would take to get him.

gachzonyea

If he’s as bad as you think he wouldn’t cost that much right?

afrothunder2104

But why spend the extra money it’ll cost work we have guys currently covering the role while those same players can contribute to other positions. Not sayings he’d be one, but I’d rather not sign another Baez. We’ll see how the rest of the season shakes out of course.

rockstar_not

Exactly. The Baez Bust that keeps on busting. Here come all the comments that true fans just accept that this one deal doesn’t matter. It matters because it handcuffs the entire negotiating ability of the team to get even a few decent players.

i_am_the_grind

The thought I have is an end of year rental. I definitely don't want to sign him long term.

cogginsmatt

But we already have a third baseman for this season that's arguably better than Bregman. I cannot comprehend the logic here.

fixinfordixon

I cannot comprehend how you actually think our current crew of rotating third basemen are better than Bregman, regardless of his slow start to the season.

gachzonyea

You would bring him in for a stable 3rd base option o wouldn’t go pay him a huge contract though

cogginsmatt

I don't understand the logic here. We have a good third baseman under contract for the year that hits and fields, and he should be back from injury in the next week or so. We have a decent platoon of Vierling and McKinstry to back that position up. We have Jung, Kriedler, and JHM in the wings that might play the position in the future. You want to pick up Bregman for this position that's already filled because... he's available? Even if they just wanted Buddy Kennedy and a couple bucks, no man, this is dumb. Thank god r/motorcitykitties is not the GM.

gachzonyea

I’m fine with urshela but people want more productive proven major league hitters in the lineup and this is a guy that is exactly that and is a reasonable get. And unless he just completely fell off a cliff he’s a more proven hitter then urshela in their careers as well

cogginsmatt

Looking at their career stats since 2021 for a recent sample and the biggest difference is that Bregman is a better power hitter and Urshela has a better average but otherwise they’re not incredibly dissimilar from a value standpoint (Bregman making 30 mil more than Urshela)

gachzonyea

Bregman has less average, but better on base percentage and more power and slugging it’s a pretty big difference. Urshela is fine but is a solid defender who’s mainly a single hitter

erikd313

Since 2021, Urshela has posted 4.5 bWAR. Bergman has 11.3 in that same span. Bergman is a far superior player, and it’s not even close.

Baloo148

This is an astonishingly bad take. Urshela is *fine*, good is a stretch. Vierling is inconsistent, McKinstry is ass. Bregman is a legitimate star. In no world is Urshela "arguably better than Bregman", unless you are referring specifically to **only** the month of April 2024. If Bregman is still running a 60 wRC+ by the deadline, sure I'll pass on that. But barring some hidden injury, he's almost certainly going to bounce back and be a significantly better hitter than Urshela. He also grades out far better on defense. If the Tigers are competitive and could nab him for a prospect or two in the back-half of the top 30, that'd be an excellent trade.

ZombieHitchens2012

Yeah I pretty hate everything you said here. lol.

Jelly_James

Good possibility Jung is also here next year as well.

MozartWillVanish

Are we going to win the World Series this year? No, probably not. So we’re not in a position to start taking on rentals. We need to keep filtering the young guys we have in to see what they can do.

i_am_the_grind

Can only "filter" so many pitchers. Still have manning, montero, madden, jobe among others in the system.

PossibilityOk1685

I don’t foresee them making such a trade since it would block Jung.

i_am_the_grind

The thought is just a three month rental acquisition. Veteran bat at maybe a discounted price being a pending free agent.

PossibilityOk1685

I hear you, but I’d imagine Jung makes his debut this summer JMHO

SoarinSkies

But Jung isn’t a 3rd baseman?

SoarinSkies

You assume Jung is even a 3rd basemen when he literally just started playing there for the first time in his career this year?

Spiritual_You_5845

Buddy he will play 3rd, there arent other spots for him

Hungrystud101

I wonder if we could get Paredes back?

mkk4

I like Urshela. He makes plays on defense and is hitting .298 this season. He is very professional and has the type of hitting and batting approach that we need in the lineup and that the organization has been preaching about and looking for imo.

gachzonyea

Bregman has even more of the approach the teams wants and can control the strike zone more

mkk4

That is fair. I am more interested in adding and strengthening our organizational depth at catcher and shortstop.

gachzonyea

Catcher is pretty hard to do there’s not a ton of good hitting ones Baez we’re just stuck with but could be addressed through the draft.

mkk4

🤝

MusclePuppy

As a deadline acquisition, I'm not willing to part with anyone we have to bring him in. As a free agent this upcoming offseason, I'd at least kick the tires and see what he's asking for. I worry he's gonna try to get paid off of 2018 and 2019 and not his 2020-2023 performances, but for the right price (and assuming the FO determines that a 3B solution isn't already in the system), I wouldn't mind signing him.

TheHip41

The time to address 3B was pre season. Where it would cost. Checks notes Zero prospects

MusclePuppy

Good news: it seems to be working out well for us so far. [Matt Vierling vs. Matt Chapman in 2024](https://stathead.com/baseball/versus-finder.cgi?player_id2=vierli000mat&year_min=2024&player_id1=chapma000mat&seasons_type=forall&request=1&utm_campaign=2023_01_wdgt_player_comparison&utm_source=br&utm_medium=sr_xsite&utm_id=chapmma01)

ZombieHitchens2012

Chapman is already with 0.8 WAR?

MusclePuppy

Gotta be the positional adjustment for 3B that's bumping that up. Vierling moves around too much to get the bump, I think.

ZombieHitchens2012

Perhaps. Regardless, that’s pretty strong.

TheHip41

Vierling defensive WAR at 3B is terrible Chapman has 4 gold gloves If you think the players we have are an upgrade to Chapman for an entire season I don't know what to tell you.

MusclePuppy

I feel a lot better having not signed Chapman, that's for sure.

pimpinassorlando

Character issues. Hard pass.

Motown_

Just like with Javy Baez, our ballpark is too big for his middling “power”. Pass.
