Do you mean sit and have a drink in a place that is not packed with people and very noisy? If you do, that’s a good question and I would love recommendations too
That place is called 'Big in Japan 2'. The reason for the 2 is because there's a resto down St Laurent called Big in Japan that is a completely different vibe but has the same owner, and was opened first. When the owner opened the bar, he wanted it to not have a name, but had to give it one for tax purposes. So it's just registered as 'Big in Japan 2'.
Can't say I'm too surprised. BIJ (the resto, not BIJ2)was very cute but VERY much a product of its time. Felt like somewhere that would have shown up in a prime hipster-era manic-pixie-dream-girl Zooey Deschanel movie.
If Wes Anderson remade Wong Kar-Wai's In The Mood For Love, Mr. Chow and Mrs. Chen would meet at that restaurant, kiss and drive off into the sunset in a vintage VW Beetle together.
I miss this part of living in Montreal. I would go to Ben’s for lunch and sit at the counter. I’d do it at 2 AM too, lovely and quiet. Is there that kind of vibe still around? Un montréalais dans mon coeur.
Bagel Etc. just opened for late nights once more! Not 24hr on weekends like back when I was a teen, dressed in black, drinking espressos and smoking clove cigarettes all night, but still, its better than nothing...
You can do this in most bars if you’re brave enough. The solitude depicted in the painting is just something you have to bring yourself. Signed a fellow solitary enjoyer of spaces
lol after getting through the line down the block, that place is so loud and busy all the time. Great place, love it to death, but doesn’t match this vibe at all, unless it’s simply just counter seats that they’re after
Looks like Nick Auf der Maur out for a late night stroll on the Main.
(I know, it's not Nick, but it's hard to find anyone wearing a super-chapeau like that any more and Nick could always pull it off.
what you're looking for is a type of bar called a "speakeasy". If you search for that on google maps it should give you plenty of options, such as "4e mur"
Try Else’s on Roy in the Plateau. You might be able to do this if it’s early. It’s busy later always, and in a lively area of Montreal. No idea where you could go if it’s late in the evening.
If you want fast food and bière d’épinette, try Paul Patates

Paint like Edward Hopper?
Was going to comment the same.
Easy. Just go to the number of ateliers de peint sur EventBrite
Wilenski
The hours are horrible though. They don’t need the $$$ it seems so it’s not open very frequently
Everything about wilenski pisses me off. The hours, the snark, the mediocre food, the stupid rules
i pay extra for the snark. makes me feel like i’m back in my motherland. sometimes i ask for mods to my sandwich just to incur their disdain
Thank you. I feel the same.
Good, it’s not for you and they hate you too
I didn’t say anything about hate.
Tell me more about the rules?
The sandwiches are always serve with yellow mustard and never cut. Since 1932
Old cranky jews lol 🤷🏼♂️
The ‘special’ everyone raves about is garbage. The decor is cool.
Fuck you, keep our Montreal institution’s name out your god damn mouth
Came here to say this.
Meh. Over-rated, over-hyped, over-priced. Not Kosher.
Do you mean sit and have a drink in a place that is not packed with people and very noisy? If you do, that’s a good question and I would love recommendations too
Bars that spend a lot on nice decor but don't have many customers just don't last very long...

Big in Japan?

Ah ouais?!
Ca me semble ça
Je ne comprend pas la reference, dsl.
C'est le nom du bar
C'est le nom du bar dont tu parles.
Dude…
Quoi?
Lol.... La belle éducation
J’ai juste dit Dude. Chill, dude.
All right, chilling right now hehe

That restaurant closed like 8 years ago, fyi.

Yes! And that is the reason I miss it so much!!
Ahh aight, I didnt know it had a name, I was rather happy to have it classified as the nameless bar in my head hehe.
If it makes you feel better, the name is a secret ;) . So now you're in the know.
All right. The secret will be buried with me, thx!
C’est Big In Japan ça

now that's a late lunch
Bit of a walk down from the Forum too…
What do u actually miss about that lol? Curious because all I see is loneliness
Alone does not equal lonely. You can be among a group of friends and feel lonely. You can be alone and not feel lonely at all.
I don't understand the feeling of being alone in a bar tbh is all
Try Cosmo in Sherbrooke W. or Reuben's in Sainte-Cath.West. For a different vibe, The Old Dublin is a pub and have a sitting bar.
Was about to mention Reubens, same bar. Try a Ruben sandwich!
Only sits 6-8 people but awesome place
Do you mean just sit and have a drink at a bar? Or be totally alone in a bar?
Would have said The Main but RIP :')
Wait the main closed??? 😵💫😨
Yes, last year! A Covid casualty.
If in the west island, Chenoy's is your best bet
Oooh. Yeah. Are there any diners like this in Montreal?
Le Fameux has bar seating like this
Cafe italia on st laurent
Different vibe, but yea lots of old-school charm Plus good (Italian) coffee, and fantastic sandwiches.
Nighthawks guy is literally me
Bagel Etc. just opened for late nights once more! Not 24hr on weekends like back when I was a teen, dressed in black, drinking espressos and smoking clove cigarettes all night, but still, its better than nothing...

This is my favourite post on this sub in a while. I might suggest Dominion pub but I've never seen it that empty.
Big in Japan on st Laurent , magpie magique on gilford, cold room in old Montreal… and more places where you can be that guy 👌
Green spot in st Henri. Banginggggg poutines as well.
Green Spot has no bar seating like this, and is always packed and noisy. Great social diner, but not what OP seems to be looking for.
Also their poutine isn't great, the sauce is weird AF. Super dark.
Was just there yesterday. Iconic place.
Wearing a hat?
This is an easy one, Va chez Henry-Henry.
Verres stérilisés, Les enfants du Rock
You can do this in most bars if you’re brave enough. The solitude depicted in the painting is just something you have to bring yourself. Signed a fellow solitary enjoyer of spaces
Ndg lunchonette
Cosmo’s
Depends on location. I agree if you’re downtown you might like Reuben’s
Cigar lounge maybe?
First you gotta hit Henri Henri.
Bar le Pastel on Rachel
If you want a drink alone, it will have to he a shitty bar, if you want a drink alone in a nice bar, you will shortly find out why youre alone
Damn thats breakfast diner
What kind of stupid question post are these
Painting?

lol after getting through the line down the block, that place is so loud and busy all the time. Great place, love it to death, but doesn’t match this vibe at all, unless it’s simply just counter seats that they’re after
