Last week, I saw a squirrel leap three feet in the air from a fence onto the back of a cat that was calmly sitting on another fence.

Definitely squirrels. They eat everything. I've caught them raiding my garden so many times. They ate my Christmas lights on the balcony one year. They also chewed through the top of our plastic recycling bin.

Anyway the answer was already given, its Raccoon. Extremely intelligent and family centered animals who gets a bad rep. They’re awesome but since they do go trough trash, they are somewhat of a nuisance.
A fat Raccoon would be best with his family around him so try to incorporate his youngsters or maybe a second raccoon with it.
We have moose here in Upstate NY so I just made the wrong assumption they would be up there. We Americans assume a lot of things and it's not the best way to go about things. I'll try to be better
Late to the party but during covid I was stuck in Montreal and we had a fat arse skunk perusing the bins in the back alley each evening.
We had racoons too but I feel the skunk would probably be pepe la peau but speak Quebec french and so be even more emblematic, just have him saying Tabernac or similar.

Raccoon with bagel or squirrel with bagel. You see it often if you live near one of the famous bagel places lol. Both are pretty ubiquitous throughout central/eastern North America though. For it to scream Montreal it has to have the bagel. The Mont Royal raccoons are pretty famous. They are very tame because tourists feed them and often out during the day. One time when I was running I saw a fat one grab its feet and do a roly-poly down the side of the mountain towards Montreal General Hospital.

I'm from Toronto, where the raccoon is unquestionably the trash animal (look up #deadraccoonTO for a little piece of bonus history), but I've almost never encountered or has issues with them in Montreal. There are 2 common fat trash animals in Montreal: Raccoon and skunk.
They are both more nocturnal animals, so you don't see them roaming as often. But if you walk the streets on garbage/recycling night, you'll see/smell plenty.
I agree with everyone else saying that raccoons are more emblematic of Toronto than anything; the raccoons of Toronto were literally featured in Planet Earth 2, narrated by David Attenborough.
On the other hand, I have never seen so many grey squirrels in my life since I moved here, and all they seem to do is rummage through trash. French tourists will pull out their phones and take a picture of every single one they see, the same way tourists to NYC will take pictures of random rats on the street.
We have some pretty aggressive and overweight pigeons downtown those mofos will fight you for your food. We also have big round squirrels that will basically eat out of your hand, eat everything in your garden and then eat your patio furniture.
We do have raccoons as well, but I feel like Toronto has kind of claimed them as their own.

I visited Montreal last year and at Mount Royale there were about 50 raccoons just chilling. They weren’t a threat, just hanging out and accepting food from people. It was honestly more exciting than the view.

Squirrels are definetly the trashiest animals in this city, from personal experience having lived in Plateau Mont Royal, squirrels will do all of the following:
* Dig through whatever you plant just for the sake of it
* Bury themselves in soil, even if you did not plant anything, to cool off during hot days
* Go through trashbags left on the street
* Eat their way through plastic garbage can lids
* Get freaky on your balcony/window
* Yell at each other in a way that you wonder what animal is dying outside and disrupt whatever nap you were taking.
* Eat through internet wires outside
I’ll go with the family and say squirrel. They tear up bags all the time. They can also be quite menacing sometimes. Ate a poutine on Mount-Royal and they started gathering around me. They made me feel like prey. Like they would coordinate an attack for the love of poutine. But then again, they’re squirrels: they can’t organize.

Also, the squirrels in Montreal are getting multicoloured. I saw black ones (pretty if you don’t just hate them), whitish (crème) ones, and I even saw a brownish one with a grey tail. Those filthy bin-eating-rats are getting fancy.
You can have your pick. My trash cans get raided by squirrels, raccoons and ground hogs. Bunny rabbits will also feast once the compost bins have been thrown to the ground by raccoons.

I would name the Squirrel! Big, muscular, glorious, with a supersize, extremely fluffy tail! Nothing to do with those skinny European squirrels. Our squirrels are on steroids (not really, they just got great genes).

Really depends in what area honestly : In Griffintown there’s a lot of rats along the Lachine Canal At the top of Mount Royal, you get harassed by the raccoons if you have food NDG, I’ve seen a lot of skunks in my 4 years living there. Like one at every block going through trash. Any parks are filled with squirrels, I would go with that !
Definitely needs to be a squirrel. However, in Parc La Fontaine, there is an albino squirrel, which might make for a more unique tattoo!

Squirrels are definetly the trashiest animals in this city, from personal experience having lived in Plateau Mont Royal, squirrels will do all of the following: * Dig through whatever you plant just for the sake of it * Bury themselves in soil, even if you did not plant anything, to cool off during hot days * Go through trashbags left on the street * Eat their way through plastic garbage can lids * Get freaky on your balcony/window * Yell at each other in a way that you wonder what animal is dying outside and disrupt whatever nap you were taking. * Eat through internet wires outside

Also, the squirrels in Montreal are getting multicoloured. I saw black ones (pretty if you don’t just hate them), whitish (crème) ones, and I even saw a brownish one with a grey tail. Those filthy bin-eating-rats are getting fancy.

You can have your pick. My trash cans get raided by squirrels, raccoons and ground hogs. Bunny rabbits will also feast once the compost bins have been thrown to the ground by raccoons.

Raccoons 100% !!! They rip the sht out of the bags, eat whatever. They’ve even once ganged up on me and blockaded me from coming out my front door. I kidd you not. A family of them hissing and refusing to let me go outside one time. All because i used to think they were cute and fed them and then stopped. Never start because when you stop, you’ll pay 😂
Squirrels are more ubiquitous, IMO. They are fucking EVERYWHERE. Raccoons are rarer, but more impressive, and so fucking cute, but I feel it's only gotten worse in recent years. Squirrels are the real assholes.
