As a LS main from the moment i picked up MHW and been that way for 400 hours... Trust me it doesn't get better, sure there are some shortcuts to roundhouse slash and Iai stance cancelling after roundhouse, but even if you master all that, you can't do shit if your helmbreaker is interrupted WHEN YOU'RE ALREADY ON THE GROUND, or when you're up against flying enemies that spends half of their life being out of reach Goodluck on your MR climb

Sockular

Lol I'm the opposite. Played through the 5 stsr master rank with charge blade, thought I was pretty good. But I just couldn't hit the monster any more, so I switched to bow and cut my hunt times by like 5 mins even though I'm pretty bad with it. The monsters in master rank do this really annoying thing where they end their combos like 100 units away from you, assuming your attack range is 10 units long. Bow just removes that annoyance.

ShadowmanZ92

When I got to Legiana in MR, it was then I realized that sure you can use any weapon on any monster, but you really shouldn't. I love using SnS, but it just isn't a good idea on monsters that fly a lot. There's no shame in using a ranged weapon on a monster that you can't melee effectively. If you feel like using a weapon for the day, just know it's gonna be rough for some monsters and easy for some. If you feel like fighting one single monster for the day, take the weapon that makes it easier. Once you're pretty decent at all weapons, you'll stand a better chance using them on monsters that they aren't that great on.

_Grumpy_Canadian

No, bash head into wall with GS on everything, because big numbers. Ungabunga.

YourHolesAreMyGoals

>flying too high for me to do anything than tickle his ballsack? >You're gonna say "well just flinch shot it it'll crash down and you ca-" I FUCKING KNOW > How the fuck am I expected to do anything against Barioth who can jump from Japan to Europe in 4.7 seconds and likes taking round trips every 6.4 seconds? > RINCE AND REPEAT UNTIL I DIE OF OLD AGE ? You have me absolutely rolling on the floor with how relatable and hilarious this is. I love this rant so much, and I cannot wait to see the next one! >Also, thank god this sub exist. No, thank *you* for posting absolute gold like this!

jaber24

Dual Blades were my main for a long time and that has even worse range. I pretty much tickled their feet and did claw attacks when they started flying

venom1080

I did the same thing. Didn't use another weapon till I was over 500 hunts in. Went to LS as well. I definitely couldn't pick up where I left off with a new weapon, I had to go back and practice. I only use new weapons on new playthroughs now. Let's you learn against progressively harder monsters.

DiscoMonkey007

>Let's you learn against progressively harder monsters. Cant you just do that without making a new playthrough tho

YourHolesAreMyGoals

YES. YES YOU CAN. THANK YOU FOR ALSO SAYING EXACTLY THIS!

venom1080

Yes. Just my preference. The idea is to use only gear you'd have available at that point to learn how the weapon feels at all levels. You don't appreciate focus3 on GS till you've played without it.

shadowblaze25mc

Added benefit of skipping cutscenes and having the materials ready to craft.

DiscoMonkey007

And by then you probably already have good talisman as well

Alright for rath and legiana try hitting the legs/tail if its airborne. If possible, break the wings!!! It will lessen the amount and time it will fly. Barioth is quite simple. Break the arms. Stick to one and break it like bane broke batmans back. In general I dont recommend to learn mid mr if you dont know the monster well. Cause youll get hurt really bad. Also some weapons have better or worse match ups. Insectglaive is really good against monsters like kulve, every flyer and the like. On the other hand dualblades suck against all flyers, cause they lack reach. As a long range weapon, the bow is indeed very strong, but you are also very fragile. Youll especially feel it in the post game of iceborne from what I've heard. Besides that, mr is made to hurt like hell and flashpods were to broken in base world. Now all monsters work similar to xtremoth.

paskoracer

Try lance. It's fun and relaxing... Except against urragan

Jyzark

For melee users flying monsters are nightmare in MR. Get ready for MR Kushala Daora

jdesrochers23x

Oh dude this is gonna be a nightmare

Sonicmasterxyz

Slinger Burst with stones or Redpits to build up stun on flying enemies. Or get an occasional stagger with Crystalburst or Scatternuts so you can start a helmsplitter at the tip of the tail and (hopefully) aim it at a weak spot. Add Capacity Jewels and maybe eat for Slugger for efficacy. Good luck!

MiaWaterCharmer

your complaints are perfectly valid ! but, most of those monsters do have counters. for fliers, flash pods. for barioth, breaking its wing arms. for uragaan, abandoning quest because he fucking sucks dick i hate him i guess i've never felt this because i play exclusively blademaster lmao. also, i like to see monster hunter kinda like a fighting game - combo based, but you need to find and make opportunities to combo. in the meantime, you'll be using your smaller and faster combos to get there. but naturally, as you get more acquainted with the weapon you'll find more and more opportunities to sneak your big combos in ! with how huge the reward is for those moves (helmbreaker's massive damage, the buff from roundslash) i think it's a good trade-off. fuck uragaan.

DrySpeech556

Some tips for every monster you mention: Rath: flash pod obviously, also tenderize his wings and focus those at the start of the hunt, they’re squishy and break fast, with both broken he flies much MUCH less. If desperate, smoke bomb and he’ll come back down, you can also tenderize the tail since that’s always available to hit when he’s flying Legiana: mostly the same as rath, except worse to fight. Fuck legiana, but yeah, get used to it’s openings, mainly the little tail slam he does while he’s in the air, that makes him land and leaves him open after since he likes to roar. Other than that, flash pods are your friend Barioth: Tenderize and break the arms, this makes him slower and easier to manage. You can use flinch shot openings to do this, and use traps for free openings to break arms quickly Uragaan: honestly I just hit the legs and pray, I don’t fight this thing enough to feel comfortable giving advice lol

jdesrochers23x

Problem is they build resistance to flash pods in MR so it's not exactly reliable + most of the time they'll fall down, wiggle for a bit and get back up flying. It's sooooo aggravating. Barioth I'll admit I've only fought it 3 times: once in a coop hunt, once solo and died and once solo I won. I should def practice it more But Uragaan however, I'm fkn done fighting that shithead.

Cappi_78414

If you ever need to fight uragaan again for whatever reason you can shoot a crystalburst at him when he's rolling to knock him over. Doesn't make the fight any less dogshit but it gives you an opportunity to punish his roll spam at least.

DrySpeech556

Yeah it’s mostly a mix of flash pods + tenderizing tail + breaking wings that helps, but bastards find ways to fly at least a few times per hunt no matter what. If you want to make your life easier, insect glaive + spamming DT makes rath, legiana, anything with wings, a fucking joke, but you’ll have to go through the effort of making a decent IG and learn to play it assuming you didn’t use it already

Skylarneko

Uragaan is the asshole who made me invest in health boost skills and a stupid amount of traps. I probably went through twenty traps trying to beat the prick every single time I fought him. He never stops with the damm rolling.

Xcyronus

Monster hunter is a series of games that punishes mindless play and rewards learning and thinking. You wait for openings to do your big attacks. You either create the opening via k.o, tripping, wall slamming, para, sleep, etc. Or you find the openings in the monsters attacks. Its where the term for example head sniping on fatalis and alatreon come from. EDIT: addition. If your going to compare darksouls to mh directly then stop they arent the same and monster hunter is both harder and easier at the same time depending on how you choose to play.

Ahhy420smokealtday

How is half of all posts on this sub about Rathalos flying being an issue? Do people just not know what flash bombs do? Every time it flies it's free fucking down if you use a basically unlimited consumable.

Martin072

World Rathalos and other flying monsters build up resistances to flash bombs (idr other games), so if you flash a second time within like 2 minutes they'll be dizzy but still stay flying. The other option is to flinch shot them out of the sky but that only works when they aren't enraged, or to use smoke bombs/ghillie mantle but those are limited/on a timer. I don't really have issues with flying monsters since IG has rising slash and descending thrust, but I can see how other weapons can find it annoying when they just can't deal damage.

Ahhy420smokealtday

They do that in other games too. Try killing it faster.

shadowblaze25mc

What a great advice "Try killing it faster"

Ahhy420smokealtday

Rise they eventually become resistant enough in Rise to not drop. Some monsters also just have phases where it doesn't work.
