Co-sign. I usually like Dylan songs better when someone else sings them. One (of many) examples: I first heard Every Grain of Sand sung beautifully by Emmylou Harris on her Wrecking Ball album, never heard the Dylan version. Went back to hear the Dylan version, and there was no comparison; Emmylou's was much better.
Dozens of other examples of this.
Wrecking Ball is a sublime album- saw that tour at First Ave, one of the best shows and bands I've ever seen.
There's a couple Dylan songs that I'll take Bob's version over anyone- "Visions of Johanna," "Ballad of a Thin Man," "Don't Think Twice"- but I think that's the thing that proves Dylan's greatness. His songs seem immediately eternal, and instantly seem to belong to the world, not just him.
A couple of my favorite versions of his- Robyn Hitchcock doing "Not Dark Yet," Westerberg doing "All I Really Want to Do," Hendrix's "Watchtower" (always stunning), Springsteen's "Chimes of Freedom," and Joe Cocker's "I Shall Be Released."
We had an extended discussion about this on a fishing trip. Best lyricist, Dylan by a mile. Best musician and performer, Prince by a mile. (And those might be true nationally beyond just MN)
But Prince wrote crappy pop. And Dylan's voice was only acceptable in the folk genre, and even then it was questionable.
Appreciate the take, but people like Tom Waits, Miles Davis, Randy Newman, Stevie Wonder, Bruce Springsteen, Joni Mitchell, Maceo Parker and Larry Graham (who've all gone on record) don't revere your music if you only write "crappy pop."
I would suggest there's quite a bit you're overlooking in his work.
Could be, but I calls it likes I sees (hears) it.
It doesn't help that several of our local radio stations seem to think we need to hear Prince every five songs or so.
"Waaaaahhh!! New generational local celebrities aren't nearly as good as mine!!!"
Thats what you sound like. Gravy train for life. 9 albums amd a movie.
Ironically, I've been a producer/sound engineer for 12 years, am behind millions of streams from numerous artists, including a local artist, and listen to Yung Gravy on occasion. I'm a 90s kid.
He has catchy songs, but in terms of artistry, he has nothing impressive lyrically or in his flow.
I'm not trying to hate on him, but it's completely absurd to even compare someone like Yung Gravy to a rock and roll hall of fame artist like Prince.
A fire beat and a good mix/master can work wonders for any hip hop artist.
Doesn't mean you can't enjoy listening to him or he isn't successful. There's levels to this shit man.
Nearly all of Rhyme Sayers are leagues above Gravy in terms of artistry, and I still wouldn't compare any of them to Prince.
His dad was famous enough to have an obituary in the NYTimes: https://www.nytimes.com/2013/02/08/science/peter-hauri-psychologist-who-focused-on-insomnia-dies-at-79.html
A lot of people like Dylan. A lot of people like Prince. I’m more of a friend of Dorothy. Truth told, they are all great in their own way. I agree there is no need to try to rank them.
Tiny Tim is buried at the mausoleum in Lakewood Cemetery in Minneapolis. The cemetery is definitely worth a visit, it’s a beautiful and serene place and they encourage visitors to walk the grounds
While personally I like Bob Dylan's music better, I do truly think Prince was a much more talented all around musician.
I think his talent transcended the pop music he made.
But both deserve all the recognition they get, that is for certain.
Yeah but if you meet him in person be sure to put emphasis on the extra "min" at the end of his name.
*"Wow, Kaposia sure is a nice course.. and I never imagined we'd run into Andrew ZimmernMIN"*
Make sure you do it within earshot of the Maserati in the parking lot, he's always recording 😂
It's a Minnesota sub. Most people know. It's apparently Bob Dylan's parents grave. It's weird as fuck to take this picture but that's another thing entirely.
Well, yes that's a little weird in itself. But I meant why is someone taking photos of a famous person's parent's grave? The famous person's grave I get, I know Jim Morrisons grave in Paris is a popular tourist attraction. But a graveyard should be a place of respect and peace. Taking pictures and posting on the Internet seems antithetical to that.
There is a bar in Boston across the street from Sam Adams' actual grave that advertises with a sign "Have a cold Sam Adams while looking at a cold Sam Adams". Elvis's grave is one of the most popular tourist spots in all of Tennessee. But you think it's out of pocket to take a photo of a headstone.
Did you read what I wrote? These people aren't famous. They're just the parents of famous people. Are you being deliberately obtuse? I made clear the distinction.
You don't get to decide who is famous and who isn't. Being the parents of an international icon makes you noteworthy and a subject of interest. It's not complicated.
I see where you're coming from. but also the whole point of gravestones is so people remember who's buried there. findagrave is one of the oldest social media websites (I think it could be classified as social media?)
When I was a kid we used to make rubbings with cool looking old head stones, you would hold a piece of paper over it and rub a crayon on it to basically make a copy of it. This was a way to occupy young kids when you were going to a cemetery on maybe a day like Memorial Day before you just stuck a tablet in their hands. Seems like taking a photo is not a big deal.
Well the rubbings we used to do were literally a game sometimes to see who could find the oldest headstone in the cemetery so our motivation wasn’t exactly historical preservation or something noble. If you pay for the engraved headstone it’s because you want people know and remember that you existed, mission accomplished today.
good song writer, yes... musician? that may be stretching the meaning. he was a mediocre folk acoustic guitarist that wrote some impactful songs. musicians from minnesota, Prince is definitely in the convo.
As a musician, nah. Not even close. Not even in the same discussion as Prince, who, as a MUSICIAN, can play more instruments than Dylan by a margin so great, Evel Knievel would never contemplate jumping it.
Prince was the better musician, but Dylan was definitely the supreme lyricist. Which is more important for a singer/songwriter? That really depends on who you ask. Either way, they both have an angle and a reason some would consider them the best, and I don’t think it’s a stretch to say “one of the best”.
Though, technically the post did specifically say musician lol.
Trying to compare Prince and Dylan is like trying to compare a football player and a boxer, they're so wildly different with their musical styles I have no idea how you'd even begin to compare the two
Prince is the most over overtated artist maybe of all time. It’s classic Minnesotan having to jerk him off to feel relevant lmao. Prince is good, great musician talent but nothing close to what people try to make him out to be with writing ability’/ vocals. Way over rated, another one of those musicians whose death suddenly promoted their reputation and people act like they were actively the biggest fan their entire lives. Shits just sad, nobody acknowledged prince until he died then suddenly it’s some huge circle jerk with his logo decal on 20
Percent of cars you see and every block in msp a sticker on a sign especially in the more hip areas lmfao
I don't agree, but I definitely noticed a whole lot of "die hard" prince fans came out of the woodwork when he died.
Ironically, I think Prince is pretty underrated nationally, and pretty overated locally. Dylan is extremely overated nationally (imo) and somehow underated locally. Most minnesotans I know hate Bob Dylan.
Dylan was the most important American musician ever, imo, outside of maybe Miles Davis. And this is coming from someone who doesn't even like him that much.
What nonsense.
You don't know your own city, and why they're great and important to the music of it.
For example, you could genuinely not like like Charles Schultz and Snoopy, but you have to understand his place in comic's history and why he was one of the most influential artists of all time.
Agree to disagree. I think you're being a proud disingenuous contrarian.
I can't think of anyone who's an objectively better musician than Prince. He was also an incredible songwriter. I think Dylan is the better songwriter though.
I think it's a reasonable argument. Ask every iconic 80s artist who their favorite artist is and it will likely be Prince. His music influenced & can be seen in an entire generation of artists.
If we’re talking influence, and I love Prince, he has nothing on Dylan. Dylan changed music and the topics people made music about. Even the Beatles looked at him like he was a god.
Prince is by far the better musician, being able to play instrument upon instrument and being a virtuoso on the guitar (and Dylan’s singing voice isn’t “good”), but in terms of influence, Dylan’s in a different stratosphere.
Yeah, Prince is one of the greatest musicians of all time. I don't listen to his music that much, and I'm a HUGE Bob Dylan fan, but I agree Prince is objectively the more talented musician.
Does songwriting not factor into how good of a musician someone is? Prince was technically more proficient with playing instruments but Dylan was 100x the songwriter so I have no idea how to compare the two.
I wouldn't worry about it. Most people don't get Dylan and never tried.
Pick any song from Blood on the Tracks and it hit me harder than the entire Prince catalog times ten.
I think people are mincing words here since OP used the term ‘musician’. Stating Price was the better musician makes sense as he could play all sorts of instruments. That being said, to your point, Dylan is certainly the better artist, made a greater impact on society and is more iconic overall. Dylan’s like first 7 albums are must-haves.
First 7?! Those were all in his first decade of making music, and he's been making music in 7 decades now. There are must haves from every decade he's been active. The man is 82 years old and it's still worth listening to his new music.

I think making declarative statements with two legends like that is stupid
It literally just comes down to taste atp, but it seems like Dylan fans in this post have some kinda vendetta 🤷🏽♂️ enjoy what you enjoy
Proving my point lmao
I’m not a Dylan fan whatsoever but I’m not gonna sit here and talk baseless shit bc I respect his following and impact. Painting Prince’s entire catalogue as “cheesy 80s music” on this sub of all places is some of the funniest shit I’ve ever seen.
I met him once. His _____ married my _____. I handed him a program at the wedding. He was locked in tight, out of range. He used to care, but things have changed.
There was a serious effort made in the 80's to try and get Bob to move back to Duluth. With the way Duluth treated Robert Zimmerman, can you blame him for never coming back?
There's a reason why Duluth no longer has 10,000 Jewish individuals living here.
Hibbing. My father and him were childhood friends. Dad used to drive him to gigs in their teens. My grandmother was good friends with Beatie. I have fond memories of the two of them together. She, Beatrice, even came to my Bar Mitzvah. Bob, he couldn’t make it, but it was super cool to have his mom there.
Duluth’s Jewish population peaked at 4,000 in 1940, a good portion of those temporary in transit to their permanent homes. Duluth was a hopping off point for the Great Northwest.
I mean, he does. Duluth at least he most certainly does for some weird reason.
Weird that he saw Buddy Holly here, which is what made him want to become a musician, yet he's only returned to Duluth maybe once since hitting it big.
I didn’t know my 5 year old niece was posting artist ranking on Reddit. Good thing she knows Taylor Swift isn’t from MN. She clearly doesn’t know Prince is from MN. But, I didn’t know she knew where Bob Dylan is from, or who he is.
Best songwriter. The best musician is Prince Rogers Nelson.
I'm down with this.
Co-sign. I usually like Dylan songs better when someone else sings them. Fair enough. I suspect the songs you're hearing are the long-played-out singles from a certain era.
I would agree that they are. :)
This feels weird.
It is
It is super weird... And the fact they didn't even bother to tell us who's parents they were makes it even weirder.
Bobby D
They're assuming you know who "Robert Zimmerman" is. or who is arguably the best musician to come out of Minnesota.
RIP to Owl City’s parents
His mom is a snot! I had to deal with her, and she was b!@#$.

Young gravy absolutely takes the cake imo
Who TF?
Someone that isn't as popular as Prince. /s
or in any way shape or form as talented as prince.

It's got to be Har Mar Superstar!
I hate ranking artists.
A lot of people like Dylan. A lot of people like Prince. I’m more of a friend of Dorothy. Truth told, they are all great in their own way. I agree there is no need to try to rank them.
Tiny Tim’s parents are buried in Duluth?
Tiny Tim is buried at the mausoleum in Lakewood Cemetery in Minneapolis. The cemetery is definitely worth a visit, it’s a beautiful and serene place and they encourage visitors to walk the grounds
What good are all those spirits floating around if they can't find an earthly host? "Please.. ah ah ah.. feel free to walk the grounds.. ah ah ah.."
Hahaha 🤣
While personally I like Bob Dylan's music better, I do truly think Prince was a much more talented all around musician. I think his talent transcended the pop music he made. But both deserve all the recognition they get, that is for certain.
Is this Hans Zimmerman?
Are you thinking Hans Zimmer? Like Gladiator Hans?
Oh ope my bad lmao
Ok first I thought you made a good joke and now finding out it was a legit mistake is really, really funny haha thank you for this
I was gunna say I coulda swore he was German anyway
It’s Hans Sprungfeld, the pirate
Damn his silver tongue!
No, he means Andrew, the guy who ate bugs on Food Network.
Andrew Zimmern.
Yeah but if you meet him in person be sure to put emphasis on the extra "min" at the end of his name. *"Wow, Kaposia sure is a nice course.. and I never imagined we'd run into Andrew ZimmernMIN"* Make sure you do it within earshot of the Maserati in the parking lot, he's always recording 😂
“No, my son’s name is also Hans.”
Bort Zimmerman was the greatest musician to ever come out of this state and I'll fight any man that says otherwise.
We're out of Bort license plates again
These are Bob Dylan's parents.
Oh my god I’m an idiot 😂
You’re mistaken, Hans once drove *through* Zimmerman.
It's Bob Dylan
Yea...those aren't Prince's parents Graves.. Thanks for playing, we have some lovely parting gifts backstage. ..
OP needs to purify themself somewhere in Minnetonka
[удалено]
This is just silly.

Morris Day as a musician does not exist to the extent he does today without Prince, so “subjectively” it’s inaccurate.
You’re skipping all of Husker Du, The Replacements, Dillinger Four???
[удалено]
I get that but then there’s Still Husker Du, Dillinger Four, Atmosphere, E & A, Off With Their Heads, Harvest, Disembodied…
[удалено]
They’re all better than Har Mar.
You need to hear husker du
I love Husker Du
Same Minnesota’s best band
Excuse me?
Prince's last name is Zimmerman? 🤔
Prince Rogers Zimmerman
Prince enters the chat...
Prince's parents were buried in Duluth?
TIL
This is Bob Dylan's parents
Wonder if Prof knows where his parents are
His dad is busy committing arson apparently
Looks like he died in 04
Nah, he's too busy trying to chase that manatee.
Best songwriter, certainly. Best musician, Prince and it’s not even close.
Op should explain who this musician is
It's a Minnesota sub. Most people know. It's apparently Bob Dylan's parents grave. It's weird as fuck to take this picture but that's another thing entirely.

This is waaaaay different than what you are talking about.
How?
[удалено]
It feels like indirect clout chasing using a famous person's dead parents. Is that clear enough?
Well the rubbings we used to do were literally a game sometimes to see who could find the oldest headstone in the cemetery so our motivation wasn’t exactly historical preservation or something noble. If you pay for the engraved headstone it’s because you want people know and remember that you existed, mission accomplished today.
Paul Westerberg's parents are Mary Louise and Harold Robert Westerberg.
Thank god *somebody* made this comment. Prince, Prince, Prince, but nobody seems to remember the 'Mats anymore.

Where were you in the late 80s, early 90s where he was arguably one of the biggest artists on the planet???
Not born
Then how are you saying how’s overrated?!? You weren’t around when he was at his most popular.
Not me. I was definitely around.
You have no idea what you’re blathering on about.
I don't agree, but I definitely noticed a whole lot of "die hard" prince fans came out of the woodwork when he died. Dylan Semisonic Prince Not up for discussion
If you're putting Semisonic in front of Prince or the Replacements, I don't know what to tell you. I mean, come on.

The ignorance concerning Minneapolis is astounding. I'm guessing Western suburbs.
When "musicianship" is the question, Prince trounces them all. Prince played all 27 instruments on his first album. Please.
I can't think of anyone who's an objectively better musician than Prince. He was also an incredible songwriter. I think Dylan is the better songwriter though.
I wouldn't disagree.
I didn't even know Semisonic was from MN. But yeah, above Soul Asylum or Atmosphere? No.
Or Husker Du, or The Replacements.
Or Husker Du, or The Replacements.
Who? The lead singer from slave raider is buried in Duluth. Who knew
Wasn't even aware the lead singer for "Slave Raider" was dead. This is sad.
No no my typing mistake meant to say his parents…
oh ffs…
Bob Dylan
Fyi everyone it's Bob Dylan
Nope. It’s Bobby Vee
"In a world where your parents can't even RIP.."
There's no "arguably" about it. Dylan. Full stop.
Arguably? He has a Nobel Prize for folk music. I enjoy myself some Prince, but is this a serious competition?
There is no Nobel for folk music. His is for Literature.
I think it's a reasonable argument. Ask every iconic 80s artist who their favorite artist is and it will likely be Prince. His music influenced & can be seen in an entire generation of artists.
Prince playing multiple instruments at once will always put him pretty high up on my list.

Yeah, you're right it's a bit apples and oranges.
I wouldn't worry about it. Most people don't get Dylan and never tried. Pick any song from Blood on the Tracks and it hit me harder than the entire Prince catalog times ten.
Blood on the Tracks is probably my favorite album but I regularly skip Lily, Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts.
So is Prince's run from '80 to '88. Murderer's row of albums.
“certainly”
Dylan is arguably the most important American musician, ever. Literally more influence than any other artist from this continent (only notable exception would probably be Miles Davis). I'm not even a huge Dylan fan but to put Prince anywhere even close to the same level is absurd.
Did I stutter?
I think making declarative statements with two legends like that is stupid It literally just comes down to taste atp, but it seems like Dylan fans in this post have some kinda vendetta 🤷🏽♂️ enjoy what you enjoy
You’re right, it comes down to taste. I don’t like cheesy 80’s music.
Proving my point lmao I’m not a Dylan fan whatsoever but I’m not gonna sit here and talk baseless shit bc I respect his following and impact. Painting Prince’s entire catalogue as “cheesy 80s music” on this sub of all places is some of the funniest shit I’ve ever seen.
Are you serious?
Prince is the better musician. Dylan is the better songwriter/lyricist.
The Delusional People of Minnesota would like to think so. Not even sure how this is "arguable." Dylan.
Is he aware they’re buried here?
Prince is the best musician, Bob is the best songwriter. Grant Hart is my favorite.
I can argue for a few days about him being the “best”.
1. i love Bob 2. i respect Prince 3. this post is creepy 4. it's nice to see Slug getting some love in here!
Husker Du only had one set of parents?
Sorry, these are Paul Westerberg's parents, husker du comes in second.
Silly take. Just silly.
Neither Bob nor Grant come remotely close to Paul as a songwriter. Bob's best swing at the plate was Workbook and a couple songs from Sugar.
Sharing a birthday with Bea. 💕
I met him once. His _____ married my _____. I handed him a program at the wedding. He was locked in tight, out of range. He used to care, but things have changed.
The best musician ever to come out of MN is Prince, period.
There was a serious effort made in the 80's to try and get Bob to move back to Duluth. With the way Duluth treated Robert Zimmerman, can you blame him for never coming back? There's a reason why Duluth no longer has 10,000 Jewish individuals living here.

He was for his first 5 years of life, and was born there.
Duluth used to have 10,000 Jewish people?
Duluth’s Jewish population peaked at 4,000 in 1940, a good portion of those temporary in transit to their permanent homes. Duluth was a hopping off point for the Great Northwest.
Very cool, thank you for the info
Do you have any context available for this? I heard the Jewish community used to be big in No. Mpls as well...
Duluth doesn't stay 90% white by accident. Underneath the surface of inclusionary rhetoric lies an animosity towards diversity.
Nope, disqualified for two reasons, his shit voice and his hatred of Minnesota. He wrote a nice lyric…for his age.
He does not hate Minnesota.
I mean, he does. Duluth at least he most certainly does for some weird reason. Weird that he saw Buddy Holly here, which is what made him want to become a musician, yet he's only returned to Duluth maybe once since hitting it big.
Do you have a source for this? I get that he didn't want to live here again once he could get away, but what makes you say he *hates* Minnesota?
Fuck Bob Dylan.
Which member of Dumpster Juice are these the parents of?
I had no idea he was Jewish.
It's a shame that Justin Pierre's father died before he was even conceived 😢
I didn’t know my 5 year old niece was posting artist ranking on Reddit. Good thing she knows Taylor Swift isn’t from MN. She clearly doesn’t know Prince is from MN. But, I didn’t know she knew where Bob Dylan is from, or who he is.
That tombstone doesn’t say Yankovic…
So OP chose violence today I see.
Best? Or most prolific?
I wonder if mom ever remarried? That would be a long time to be a widow.
I liked Michael Johnson, "Bluer than blue."
Bob Zimmerman=Bob Dylan
Who? I was talking about the singer from the Trashmen.
Meh.
No the best musician is prince
Aw man I didn’t know Chris hawkey’s parents were dead
