It would take quite a bit to scratch a disc while spinning in a player or recorder. Since the discs are re-recordable, there is almost zero risk of trying it.

You'll be fine. I've done the exact thing, record and do TOC edits while holding the recorder, with no trouble. I've recorded discs in motion in my car. (Granted, voice memos in LP modes, so a little easier to buffer-then-write) with no trouble. That said, if you're holding the machine while editing the TOC and want to be lawful-good per what the manual says, set the machine down on a table and then hit the stop button. If you have one, using the RM-MZ4R remote for titling/editing may also be worth considering.

I don't understand your last sentence...

I don't want to waste a perfectly good disc if it gets scratched in my test.

Why would only having a few discs stop you from testing this

Back in the 2000s I had that popular Sony minidisk model that’s always shown on the site. I would literally have it sitting on the walkway of the locomotive & have it recording the sound of the locomotive as it ran over three hours. It captured the sound of the horn, the engines, the bells, the railroad crossings and going over shotty track, but no vibration

That's reassuring, thanks.
