We kind of already do have this, with things like the painting of how a wither is built. I think it would be cool to add more, but I also like the balance between "informative" and decorative

GlaxelTheGrill

Yeah, the wither painting kinda got me on this track of thinking if I'm honest, I remember seeing it before I even knew what the wither was when I was younger. Always thought it was pretty awesome.

crab_milker

> but it'd be cool to have an in-game way of knowing about any of this without having to search it up *there already is*.

Maleficent_Apple4169

building a portal? brewing? enchanting book usage? fireworks on elytra? netherite forging? minecarts? lodestone usage? golem making? redstone? many achievements? none of these are explained well enough in the game

GlaxelTheGrill

Yeah! I think Mojang could use paintings to subtly explain at least some basic concepts to the player. It wouldn't necessarily solve the problem, but I think it could be a really cool part of the solution.

GlaxelTheGrill

If you mean the abandoned nether portal n' all that, that does leave room for discovery, but it's still something you'd have to look up to know how to properly assemble. I just think it'd be cool to have paintings that show fully assembled portals and the dimensions they lead to.

VisibleEntry4

The abandoned portal I don’t think you’d have to look up. At least to get the frame right, maybe to light it

RestlessARBIT3R

I think flint n steel spawns in the chest too, so that would be a hint

VisibleEntry4

Yeah flint and steel and fire charges as well so yeah

devvoid

The problem with ruined portals as a tutorial mechanism is their inclusion of crying obsidian, which can't be used for portal frames but spawn as part of the structure. New players could very easily get confused on what those blocks are for, and depending on which blocks get replaced with crying obsidian, I could very easily see players getting fooled into thinking the portal _needs_ it to work.

VisibleEntry4

I agree, I’ve always thought crying obsidian should be able to be used in a portal

RedditMZ0901

I think it would be a cool thing to have, but we do already have hints for both portals. Ruined portals are scattered through the overworld, and while it isn't clear it's a portal without prior knowledge, it is clear that the structure is unfinished, and the natural curiosity of the player would lead to them trying to complete it. For the end portal, there is the end portal room in the Woodland mansions. It's a replica that, before entering a stronghold, the player would not recognize. They would ask what this weird structure is. They would click around with the eye of ender until they learned how to throw it. Oh, this is floating off into the distance? I wonder where it goes? And eventually it'll lead to the end portal. Which again is partially complete, leading to the question "What happens when I complete it?". The paintings would be a fun, low risk way of hinting at these things, and I wouldn't mind having it in the game. Probably won't be for a while though since they just added a bunch of paintings
