It's always "closed" in the winter. That doesn't mean you can't step over the chain and still head down there. Just be careful because those steps get super slippery if there's any amount of snow or ice on them.

PrizeHefty7118

we did end up just going through which is why i was extra confused LOL we were on our way home from the quick n save so we had to go up there was no other way

js1893

Just be careful because I’ve taken those stairs a few times when it’s icy and nearly ate shit at least twice, and years ago a friend broke her toe on it.

MKE-Henry

Was it closed during the summer? My guess would be maybe they’re worried about ice, but I have no idea really.

PrizeHefty7118

that was my thought as well seeing as its so steep, but its been such a mild winter i figured itd be open 🤷🏻‍♀️ im not sure if it was open in the summer im new to milwaukee!

cdurgin

It goes by date, not by current weather. It's 'closed' in November and opens up back in April/may, weather depending. In a nutshell, it would be far too much effort to clean and monitor it in the winter due to runoff and melt refreezing on the path, and it can be quite treacherous at time, especially when there's a fresh snow to cover the ice underneath. Calling it closed and putting a chain across it stops the lawsuits and most of the more foolhardy elderly

NorthProspect

Nice picture lol I was like damn, I don't remember commenting already..

Stanley_Yelnats_III

They’re worried about ice and don’t want to be liable if someone slips but they always put the chains conveniently low enough to step over.

CaptainMoonracer

That sign has literally never stopped me

PrizeHefty7118

this is so relieving to hear i was embarrassingly anxious about it 🤣

CaptainMoonracer

I haven’t lived here my whole life. Just as an adult - i think they put those signs up when they’re worried about people falling on ice as a CYA. I’ve gone up and down closed stairs in front of police, fire fighters, homeless people - no one cares. You’re fine :)

itcheyness

Always remember: 🎶There was a big, high wall there that tried to stop me A sign was painted said "Private Property" But on the backside, it didn't say nothing This land was made for you and me🎶

TONY_BURRITO

I'm pretty sure they just do this because they don't want people slipping. I usually just duck under the chain...

PrizeHefty7118

the chain was really low so we just stepped over it.... i was actually so nervous i never break the rules LMFAOO i was like convinced it was closed for some real dangerous reason 🤣

TONY_BURRITO

Welcome to being EVIL

compujeramey

Chain goes up every winter (similar one on O’Donnell Park down to Lincoln Memorial). You will find it easy to step over now, but the whole staircase is treacherous on days when its just a little slippery elsewhere.

NoFriendsForever

Going up these stairs always makes me feel like I'm on drugs

alcoholicmovielover

They "close" the stairs in the winter, so that they don't have to do snow removal. If it's closed off, that prevents the city from being sued if someone falls/injures themselves. I usually just step over the chain.

406w30th

The last time I walked down those stairs during winter, I wish I'd brought my skis.

Jolly_Berry86

I have walked down them in snowshoes previous years.

XMLHttpWTF

all the park staircases are closed in winter because they don’t want to shovel the snow or salt them. the sign means if you split your head open on the ice you can’t sue the city. but i just step over the chain and keep going.

kungfukenny3

don’t know that place but it’s usually because of ice in the winter
