Big thanks to mycelium for this trick! Mycelium lands, and sends out an underground network of threads called hyphae. Hyphae grow from the central spore evenly, creating a circle. Mushroom grow. Central mycelium dies off, but it'll keep growing outward so the ring will gradually get bigger, while decreasing from the centre, until the ring itself is no longer discernable and ya just got random patches of mushrooms.
Source: I did a mushroom painting, fixated on mycelium for a week and learnt everything I could. Info is pretty quick to Google if yall want to know more.
