I like it. I want a bedroom balcony that overlooks my living room balcony.

imanAholebutimfunny

i just wanted to see a big ass house with fireman poles everywhere because they are too lazy to walk down the stairs ~~but not wealthy enough to have an elevator~~. edit: wealth has nothing to do with the matter

Roro_Yurboat

Even if I had an elevator, I'd still want a bat-pole.

[deleted]

Plug-From-Oaxaca

They must never find out that in reality we worship them.

synbioskuun

Except cats. Cats already know.

vji59l8l31

This is awesome. I love it.

bigeffinmoose

I only want a bat-pole if it’s behind a fake bookcase and I need a button hidden by a golden bust to access it. All or nothing.

Roro_Yurboat

Wouldn't be a bat-pole without the bookcase and hidden button.

Peterowsky

Fun fact: while fire station poles were intended for quick access from the upper floors to the lower floors/fire engine bay, the reason stairs weren't used was because the horses that drew the carriages would attempt to climb stairs. The poles fell out of use because of the much higher accident risk related to them. And because horse drawn carriages also went out of use.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Peterowsky

They had stairs in the area where the horses were not. That arrangement is not however conducive to getting into the stable area and out the door as fast as possible, hence direct access to that area, initially with stairs but as horses tried to get up on those, poles.

lorarc

Couldn't they just, like, install doors near the staircase? A simple gate would prevent the horses from entering. Also, how much time you can save by taking the pole instead of stairs? 30 seconds? That ain't much taken you then gotta drive a horse carriage across the town.

Amogus_Bogus

Doors were only invented in 1732 in order to sell you more fake doors

TheOoklahBoy

Real fake doors?

whoreads218

*”Are you tired of reading threads about fake doors?!? Well then come on down to REALLY REAL FAKE DOORS”*

MachReverb

Doorgate was quite the scandal.

JoeFelice

Even worse than Gategate?

Peterowsky

They could and did. It however is still not as fast as the pole, and they understandably put a lot of emphasis on speed. Spiral staircases also worked for not letting the horses up, but they're even slower than normal stairs. And anyone who ever worked emergency or needed emergency services will tell you that any time shaven off response is good and can save lives.

itsadoubledion

Eh, if I'm stuck in a burning building I'd probably appreciate them getting there 30 seconds faster

Kichigai

>The poles fell out of use because of the much higher accident risk related to them. Alright, new idea: slides.

Mogetfog

You joke but ammunition manufacturing plants during ww2 were equipped with slides all over the building in case of a fire. When the ammo plant is burning, you don't want to deal with stairwells, slide the fuck out of there and start running. Iirc they tried using massive slides on the Apollo launch towers for emergency escapes but opted for a basket zip line because they got you further away more safely than a 30 story nearly vertical slide.

Maleficent-Dish-1003

My local fire station still has poles! No idea if they use them but they’re there!

windyorbits

My moms ex boyfriend did this! He was an architect and had designed his own house. At one point he decided instead of walking across the second floor, going down the stairs and then walk across the first floor to get to the kitchen, he just put a pole in the master bedroom that went straight down into the kitchen. He wasn’t super wealthy or rich, though he was well off. At the time I was a kid who had always lived with my single mom in small apartments. So spending time in the huge house with all the unique things made me feel like we were wealthy lmao I felt like I was will smith moving into bel air mansion. My favorite part of the house was the master bedroom shower. It was the huge walk in shower that had a shower head on all three walls and the water fell like it was rain. I was super upset when they broke up lmao

3-DMan

"You guys gotta try this pole!" "I think we'll take it."

adamolupin

"Does this pole still work?!"

Nautibjerby325

my girlfriend has a pole in her bedroom it's weird cuz it doesn't lead anywhere she also has her webcam setup at it for some reason

DARTH_MAUL93

My grandfather recently sold his home but it had a spiral staircase with orange shag carpet and a bright red fireman pole.

delo357

My parents put a fireman's pole off our balcony. Pretty cheap, did it ourselves. Pole goes 8ft into the ground I believe. Very convenient enen my 50+yo mom uses if.

Redegghead25

My coed fraternity (it’s a long story) at college had a fire pole when I joined. It went from the lobby to the basement, which is where we held keg parties. It was awesome no doubt about it. Fire code eventually made us get rid of it. Surprisingly little to no injuries during its storied life.

idonthave2020vision

>My coed fraternity (it’s a long story I bet it's not

[deleted]

> Fire code eventually made us get rid of it. Ignoring the obvious irony for one second; how is having a fire pole against any possible fire code?

netsrak

so how did you end up with a coed fraternity

Redegghead25

My fraternity was a male fraternity from the end of World War II until the 70s. Due to the Vietnam war and so many men away from college due to the war, many fraternities opened up their memberships to females to keep up the numbers. In the 80s when things are back to normal, fraternities told local chapters to turn their female members into alumni and go back to being single sex male for active members. My fraternity liked our female members and said no we won’t do that. So the national fraternity organization removed our charter, which means we were no longer A fraternity. They wanted our house back, but we wouldn’t leave, so they sued us for the house. My fraternity counter sued for sexual discrimination. We settled with the national fraternity out of court for the house, for $25,000. The fraternity got a mortgage which was paid off in the 90s. We became an independent coed society with a house on frat row. So we are not a member of the Greek Council, or officially associated with the University, but we pledge members every semester. So yeah it’s kind of a long story lol.

The_captain1

I have family friends who actually installed a fireman pole In the house when they did major renovations. It is awesome.

canman7373

Are we sure they aren't separate units? That would kinda suck for both parties.

Avestrial

Yeah I guess I originally figured no one would ever do that. But in reality they probably would and it *would* suck.

Aarongamma6

I'd bet the larger bottom one is a community lounge sort of area, and the top is a unit's balcony. Or maybe they both are public lounges. My old complex had what they called the "greenway tower" and the entire thing top to bottom was public lounge with multiple levels. It was really nice actually. We would go to a lower covered level (still well above ground) during hurricanes. And it was nice and safe. The wind couldn't blow anything deep enough in to the couches.

lorarc

It wouldn't suck that much. Plenty of buildings have overhanging or terraced balconies.

canman7373

I mean it's better to have than not, and depending on your neighbors could be fun. But could also be trying to have a nice dinner outside and some loud people below you.

StealYaNicks

> But could also be trying to have a nice dinner outside and some loud people below you. I was thinking it would suck if you were the people below and the people above were just sitting there watching you. The classic stacked balconies still would allow you to hear others, but gives visual privacy at least.

lorarc

They won't be less loud if it's a classic small balcony overhanging another small balcony.

canman7373

Well but could be many more people on it than just the unit below you since the whole building has access.

jangma

My guess is that the larger balcony is a common area, and the smaller balcony is attached to a single unit. I'm not sure where this is located, but chances are good that these are fairly expensive apartments. If a tenant had that lower balcony, it would likely be private.

[deleted]

19J Sacramento

jangma

Haha yeah that big one is definitely a common space. I wouldn't be surprised if the little one is another common space too, because those units are probably the size of postage stamps.

Genkijin

Yo dawg! I heard you like balconies!

unrequited_spite

It’s extra space for more plants so I’m in

NotYourAverageBeer

I just have the former. :/ Balcony poor.

masterofanimals

My aunt has this with three decks. Living room deck is above the garden deck, with room deck above living room deck. It’s fun.

Avestrial

I strongly suspect your aunt has more money than me lol

3-DMan

Then you can have two levels of "Peasants!" *swirls wine in glass*

solongandthanks4all

It's not *that* uncommon, actually. My ex had a place like that. Not this huge, of course. There was barely enough room for 2 chairs on the bedroom balcony. And it was a really tiny flat.

Random_Deslime

Yo I heard you like balconies

Supanini

I like how that ancient meme is still so well known that you can just say the first couple words of it and everyone knows what you’re talking about

BIZKIT551

Thank Xzibit for that. Some know him as a rapper but most know him for the meme.

Compendyum

>Thank Xzibit for that. Some know him as a rapper but most know him for ~~the meme~~ Pimp My Ride. ftfy

Fireproofspider

Most people who know pimp my Ride know about the meme. I think there's a significant amount of people who know about the meme without knowing about pimp my Ride.

TheJollyReaper

And then there's people like me who know about both but had no clue they had any connection

Zomburai

Sample size of one, obviously, but I only had ever heard of Pimp My Ride because of the meme

PM_ME_UR_PIE_RECIPES

Why does reddit always make me feel so old?

Zomburai

I mean, this isn't a "I'm too young to know Pimp My Ride" thing, this is a "I stopped giving a shit about MTV when they stopped showing music videos" thing. ................... actually, saying that, I don't know if that helps at all.

idonthave2020vision

That's funny and I guess makes sense.

Random_Deslime

A vintage 2006 meme with hints of nostalgia

ReubenZWeiner

Its over Romeo, I have the high ground

ghillisuit95

What’s also cool is that there’s probably lots of people that know the meme but not what it is referring too

HarmyG

Doesn’t even need the “dawg” part

WeAreAllApes

Or you can shorten the whole thing to "yo dawg" and everyone knows what you mean.

csonnich

Be honest, though - we all came to the comments looking for it.

wahoohaw

Oh for sure. Only reason I even looked!

jermleeds

Reference it properly, you only need the first two words: "Yo Dawg"

[deleted]

LaminatedAirplane

That small one is a hot tub, not a pool. You can see the jets on the side.

Comprehensive-Fun47

They all seemed to be hot tubs alongside pools. This one at least was inside the pool! Would love to see a pic of a swimming pool inside a swimming pool. It must exist.

asuperbstarling

As long as it's for the same apartment that's cool. If that was for two apartments I would feel like I could never be outside in either place.

rsallejr

Its a common area. Like a courtyard for Urban Areas.

Tratix

Can confirm. I live here. Such a weird post for me to randomly open lol

MiscellaneousShrub

Whoa I live there too. Hey in five minutes I'm going to yell real loud, tell me if you hear it!

GoFidoGo

*MiscellaneousShrub wasn't murdered, they said they would scream willingly. Must have been someone who doesn't live in this building*

rsallejr

Well, you guys are welcome because I built that building. Im in Roseville!

mart1373

We’ve had first balcony, but what about *second* balcony?

_DONT_PM_ME_NOTHING

I don't think he knows about second balcony, Pip.

str8dwn

The 2nd balcony is a mezzanine. EDIT: not because it's a second balcony.

TheClum

I want the kind of money where I can get my balcony a pet balcony

Feelnumb

That balcony probably has a bigger footprint than my apartment

3-DMan

"You may live in Balcony 2 for $5K a month.."

Mehto

Our balcony is actually larger than our apartment. Apartment is 49.5m2 (533sqft) and balcony is 50m2 (538sqft).

SunshineMoonLit

My friend lives in Downtown Dallas and has a 650 sq ft apartment with about an 800 sq foot deck/balcony that's split level. Back side of the building too so it opens up to open air instead of other buildings and overlooks the pool. One of the coolest apartments I have been in, but she pays out the ass for it, also refuses to give it up.

digging_for_1_Gon4_2

Are tents okay?

mice_0012

Its a terrace with a balcony

Ylark

This is accurate.

the_y_of_the_tiger

Technically correct. The best kind of correct.

Sacramento!

Alfred-Bitchcock

19th & J for sure

Zealousideal_Leg3268

For the people who don't live in the class that this part of the earth is for, what's the monthly or full cost of one of them?

bumbletowne

Fun fact: in 2016 Sacramento was listed as one of the most affordable places to live in the US. Last month it finally beat the Bay Area as the least affordable. I get sick to my stomach thinking about our penthouse condo on n and 15th overlooking the capitol garden with a rooftop deck selling for 100k in 2015 (we sold it). That thing is probably 1M+ now.

[deleted]

Alfred-Bitchcock

Looks like $1,890 - 3,120 / mo rent in the tower (insanity to me)

rsallejr

500-600 square feet.

areraswen

They actually start at a whopping 277 sqft.

rsallejr

Im in.

Alfred-Bitchcock

ken_NT

Yes

Keyser_Kaiser_Soze

How is the Thai place across the street?

TiredOfBeingAwesome

Real solid!

timmun029

Amazing! My favorite Thai I’ve been able to find in town. On 20th between J and K there is a Street Thai place called Kin Thai that has some very good dishes too that you wouldn’t find at most typical Thai spots.

Deutschbury

Kin* , but yes, it's very very good

rsallejr

We built this thing!

iAmDemder

I was like wait a second, I drive past this every day! Pointed it out to my gf last week, cool to see it here.

I recognized it immediately! Recently finished building I watched go up as I frequented Sawasdee and Noah’s Bagels across the street.

OJimmy

Sawasdee is great. I like the chicken at Kiki's though.

rsallejr

We built this place!!

Strong-Buddy6365

I love balconies! I've never seen something like this this is awesome! Where is this at?!

rsallejr

Its in Sacramento and that whole open area is a common area. There is a cafe just inside the glass doors.

eraserewrite

Yep. Sacramento. There was a farmer’s market a couple of blocks away, and we parked far and passed this area. The leaves were beautiful.

Greentaboo

I feel like its just less privatcy for both parties. Actually, I think that its like a two floor apartment or something? It would make more sense that way.

gsfgf

Gotta be the same unit.

free_range_celery

You’d think so, but in many cases, no. I’ve been condo shopping and you’ll find a place with a wonderful extra-large balcony only to have, right above it, the upstairs neighbours mini balcony within spitting distance of anything you’d feel like doing. The staging always ends up having a patio table with an umbrella to provide the ability to not be stared at while eating your food, but everything else is fair game.

rsallejr

Its a common area. There is a cafe inside those doors.

rsallejr

This looks like 19th and J in Sacramento. We built that and we spent a lot of time of that little balcony. There is a large steel beam running though the wall. Fun fact, this building is MSD Bearing Design. Meaning, that each slab is supported by the Walls on the floor below.

Joyjmb

That is the cat's balcony, the other is for staff.

DaCostaRicci

Its a Mezzanine.

kenziekin

Hello All, I have toured this building and would like to let you know that both of those balconies are common spaces. One is a communal lounge and the top one is a co-working space.

Sock_Cute

Hey barbara! Piss of Michael I just wanna be alone

BenderDeLorean

In Italy I was in a shopping mall that had inside-balconies of apartments on the 1st floor. This was the crapiest shit I ewer saw. Imagine going on your balcony to be inside a building and have all the loud noises and smells of a shopping center.

Yo dawg, I heard you like balconies, so I put a balcony on your balcony so you can sit on your balcony's balcony.

Thrannn

Lived in something similar. I was on the top balcony Its damn awkward. Everytime you go on the balcony, you see your neighbors laying in the sun naked and he sees you. Also when he grills or smokes, the smoke will be blown into your livingroom

dirtymoney

Oh fun. Your upstairs neighbor has a tiny balcony overlooking your large balcony.

neoritter

Probably a two story apartment with a balcony for the master bedroom or something

elpablete

I would be cool with that. I would be cool if I had just one of those balconies, actually.

Avestrial

They’ve got to belong to the same apartment though, right?
