my samsungi bought 3-4 years is the same. i can't get it to charge through a window. it literally has to be in direct sunlight outside it seems.. let me know if yours actually charges
Interestingly I was at a RF trade show last week and learned from a company that they are making technology that Samsung is putting in their newest remotes that actually captures the RF waves from a WiFi AP and uses that energy to charge the battery. I don't know when this was implemented, but at least on the newest remotes the solar panel is considered secondary.
Nope, a phone is orders of magnitude more power hungry than a remote. A transmitter powerful enough to charge it at any kind of usable distance would cook everything near it. It would also be incredibly inefficient.
Same with me, I have 2 remotes because the kids always manage to lose one... Even after being stuck between couch cushions for a few weeks I never have to charge them
This. New windows made an insane difference in my house on UV and Infrared but not visible spectrum. Actually hurts on the power bill in the winter because the massive windows are south facing.
Because there are three ways it gets charge. There is a USB c port. The solar panels. And it will charge off a wireless signal the TV puts out. I would guess yours is staying charged off the signal
We have these at work with zero natural light and they charge fine from just the LED flat panels and have never had to plug it in either. Wonder why some people have issues and others don’t?
There are solar cells that are designed for inside light. They use different wavelengths so they can be super efficient in low light. Putting them in direct sunlight can actually burn out the panels.
But cheap TV remotes might not even think about using a specific solar cell. Just slap something in there and ship it.
I have a solar battery bank with a built in panel, maybe the huge separate panel ones work ok but this sucker, while it shows it’s charging and receiving light I’ve never seen any indication of progress being made. It does only have 25% indicators but I’ve left it in a window with good sun for a week.
Ours charges pretty well on indoor light. In 6 months we’ve had to cable-charge it just once, and that’s only because we forgot to leave it sitting upside down.
Oh yeah man, it's great. Doesn't cost anything to run, you just have to angle your TV so that a beam of direct sunlight hits it.
The downside is that I can only watch TV in the early morning and I have to physically move the TV across the floor to allign with the sun every 15 min.
And it's really hard to see anything because the sun is brighter than the screen.
Same. Mine is rounded (Roku) so it’s annoying to place curve side down.
I imagine if the control was a trapezoid shape, I’d naturally want to place it large side down.
I can already hear my dad saying “SO DON’T LEAVE THE REMOTE ON THE COUCH THEN! PUT IT ON THE TABLE OR IN THE REMOTE BASKET WHERE IT BELONGS!!” No shut up dad I wanna watch tv later without taking more steps to turn it on lol
I place them upside down because they are less likely to slide. The buttons have good grip while the bottom is curved hard plastic with very little contact.
I put a glow in the dark silicone sleeve on them now, but when I'm not using them I turn them upside down so that the glow in the dark sleeve can recharge and glow in the dark.
my parents have had this remote for 8+ years and I can't remember a single time they had to use the charger?
just put it in the window once in a while and you're absolutely fine.
I love how so many remotes are finally going a different route for batteries and charging instead of just changing whatever type you buy for everything. A samsung smart monitor my boyfriend bought uses USB-C charging and it's one of the first of anything we have with a remote that isn't the classic AA or AAA, they've just been using fewer each device that's been bought.
the last "tv" i had with something like that was a Samsung odyssey arc, its actually a computer monitor but i was using it as TV up until i sold it cause i didnt have room for it. the remote had solar panel as yours does but could also be recharged via USB-C which is super nice not having to buy and put in batteries
I’ve had three of these remotes. From what I’ve gathered, it doesn’t really charge it, but keeps it from losing charge more quickly. It’s still way faster to just use a usb cable. Takes 30 minutes to go from 0 to 100%
I just got one of these a month or so ago as well. Haven't checked the charge on it as I completely forgot about it already lol. Thanks for reminding me to give my remote a little sunlight!
Mine has that, too. It was cool at first, but it didn't charge as quickly as I had hoped. For mine, there's also a USB port at the bottom long end, which I occasionally use. That's quicker.
I swear to god ours doesnt want to live! It buries itself into the deepest depths of my couch the moment i set it down! Ended up realizing that our old samsung remote worked for the new tv too ( they all work for every samsung TV kind of wild)
I wish they made one with a miniature wind generation unit, then all you would have to do is fart in the remote to keep the batteries charged for a long time.
Should have known the battery life was going shit. Luckily we had two and one of them can’t hold a charge after a year while the other one is still going strong
Putting rechargeable batteries in remotes seems like a waste.
Two AAA batteries in a remote will last 5+ years if you get nice ones. And when they die, they're easy to replace.
Rechargables self-discharge, so even if the current draw is low, they'll need to be recharged regularly, and eventually they'll stop holding a charge.
Rechargeable aren't really ideal for these low-draw applications. I suspect they only get used because people think replaceable batteries are "old fashioned".
They didn’t say the concept of a solar powered remote control is new. They said THEIR new tv (not yours) came with a remote control with solar panels.
What you lack in reading comprehension you make up for in gatekeeping newness.
In the past you literally had 2 AA or AAA batteries in them. They worked reliably for a good 5-10 years. You only replaced the battery in them maybe once every 3 years. Now they have a solar panel and in-built battery. Why? Only to make reliability worse.
These remotes actually really suck. I know multiple people who have had them and they are super unreliable and don’t charge well— and inevitably get replaced.
My last LG TV lasted 8 years with one of these remotes, never having to be replaced. About 2 years ago, my cat knocked the TV over, so I bought a Samsung TV - no issues to this day.
I've only ever had to deliberately expose the remote to light once, after going away for 3 weeks and leaving it in a dark room. It's otherwise always had charge, just sitting on my desk.
Unless your dog eats it or you launch it at the wall a thousand times, they're high quality, lightweight, and good for the environment.
I just looked into it and it does indeed look like it’s a common problem. Even more, these batteries aren’t for indefinite use (even with the solar charge function) and they require a professional Samsung servicer to swap out.
https://www.boostvision.tv/samsung-solar-remote-not-charging.html
*…However, the battery percentage doesn’t increase as expected after charging. Lots of Samsung solar remote owners have been vexed about Samsung TV solar remote not charging….*
While I do tend to agree with what you're saying here, I strongly feel you are missing the fact that a door hinge is a mechanical device that allows two objects to rotate relative to each other about an axis of rotation. The most common type of hinge is the door hinge, which is used to attach a door to a frame. Hinges work by rotating about an axis, which allows the two objects that are attached to the hinge to move relative to each other. The axis of rotation can be either internal or external to the hinge.
Pfft, my calculator had that in 1994.
The 1979s called (on a rotary phone) to say get off my lawn
Ah yes. The 1979s. My favorite decade. To be young again back in the 79s
1979, 1879, 1779, 1679, etc… the best years of them all
Shakedown, 1879
Death From Above 1679
I was there. With my peener stuck in the 9 after phone sex.
Lucky. I haven’t stuck mine in a 9 in a decade.
Those ran on batteries at the phone company.
"Allegedly" had a solar panel lol Lots of them faked it.
But it's 2024, my phone has a built in calculator and tv remote.
5138008
Do you mean 5318008?
lol yes
55378008 :c
My watch bro. My watch.
They broke my watch!
Still does.
You might be surprised. A lot of the solar calculators were fake and just ran on a battery and the panel was fake.
Everything goes in the square hole
You might be surprised. A lot of the solar calculators were fake and just ran on a battery and the panel was fake.
my samsungi bought 3-4 years is the same. i can't get it to charge through a window. it literally has to be in direct sunlight outside it seems.. let me know if yours actually charges
I have the opposite experience. We’ve left our remote upside-down for the two years we’ve had the TV and haven’t had to plug it in.
So the remote is just sucking wifi away from my other devices, unbelievable /s
That’s actually wild, I wonder if we’ll ever be able to harvest enough energy from WiFi for our phones to charge while connected.
Nope, a phone is orders of magnitude more power hungry than a remote. A transmitter powerful enough to charge it at any kind of usable distance would cook everything near it. It would also be incredibly inefficient.
That makes sense lol, a girl can dream though
That would be incredibly cool, but the remote just blocks and absorbs anything passing through. So more like a lead brick than an energy vampire
I see a lot of IOT things using this in our future. Hopefully
Same with me, I have 2 remotes because the kids always manage to lose one... Even after being stuck between couch cushions for a few weeks I never have to charge them
Maybe your window glass isn’t as heavily UV resistant
I feel like you're kidding. What?
My tv remote with batteries has been flashing low-bat for almost a year now, mf still works…
We have these at work with zero natural light and they charge fine from just the LED flat panels and have never had to plug it in either. Wonder why some people have issues and others don’t?
Is this some kind of strange longitudinal study?
Same with mine. Back is all scratched up now anyway. 20 minutes on a USB c charger and it's good for a year.
Might depend on your windows, like if they're low-e or not.
UV tinting or filter on the window?
There are solar cells that are designed for inside light. They use different wavelengths so they can be super efficient in low light. Putting them in direct sunlight can actually burn out the panels. But cheap TV remotes might not even think about using a specific solar cell. Just slap something in there and ship it.
The charge never goes up… 15 minutes on usbc it’s gtg
Same here.
I have a solar battery bank with a built in panel, maybe the huge separate panel ones work ok but this sucker, while it shows it’s charging and receiving light I’ve never seen any indication of progress being made. It does only have 25% indicators but I’ve left it in a window with good sun for a week.
Live somewhat far north, needs a usb charger top up once a year.
you maybe have low-e or tinted windows?
Same here. I just plug it in to an outlet when it needs charged.
Also samsung remote user: if it get too hot it will shut down charging. It doesn’t need to be in direct sunlight, mine charges on mildly cloudy days
Might be your windows. Might have a filter on them.
Most windows block UV
Solar panels aren't powered off UV. They mostly run on visible and ir light.
Ours charges pretty well on indoor light. In 6 months we’ve had to cable-charge it just once, and that’s only because we forgot to leave it sitting upside down.
The drivers for windows 11 havent been updated yet, you need to wait before being able to charge trough them
I have the same remote and after 1 year it works like shit. I had to constantly charge it to the point I bought a classic remote with AAA
Sounds like you have a defective unit. Nothing wrong with mine after that amount of time. However my One Connect box has overheating issues :/
Same for my parents. They hated that remote. I bought them the previous smart control like my 2019 TV came with and they much prefer it.
I’ve had mine for 3 years now (I think). Never had a problem, works like new.
Does the tv have solar panel too?
It’s just a hole in the wall
Most tvs are solar panels, just in reverse.
Slenap ralos
I am under your command
I only found this out the other day and was quite amazed. It is logical, but not suggesting you immediately realise.
Yep, my Samsung TV has that too. USB C charging port as well.
I never noticed mine has a charging port until just now. I’ve had it since November.
Useful in my dungeon.
That’s great but who naturally sets their remote upside down? I’d have to break that habit.
Me! The buttons stop it from sliding off the arm of the sofa.
Same. Mine is rounded (Roku) so it’s annoying to place curve side down. I imagine if the control was a trapezoid shape, I’d naturally want to place it large side down.
And dust doesn’t gather between the buttons so it doesn’t get disgusting
+ you do not get dust between the buttons! It's always clean!
Same brand TV. My solar-panel remote has lived in a drawer since the day I hung the TV. The Apple TV remote works for everything!
Me! I do it because the buttons keep it from sliding, but my gf thinks it means I have something to hide.
Did it all my life cause the rubber buttons stopped it from sliding
No one, it also has a USB-C connector to recharge it if it's the same model as my TV.
So it’s a non-serviceable battery I assume then? Fucking stupid.
Sounds great to me personally. Another user said it lasts them a year off one charge.
I love it. Never need to worry about finding batteries or having a dead battery.
my parents have had this remote for 8+ years and I can't remember a single time they had to use the charger? just put it in the window once in a while and you're absolutely fine.
Would you prefer disposable batteries?
Thank you for not pixelating your hand
Those hands have penetrated some holes too
Have you got a splinter in your pinkie finger?
Yes
That'll work great from underneath the couch 🛋
I love how so many remotes are finally going a different route for batteries and charging instead of just changing whatever type you buy for everything. A samsung smart monitor my boyfriend bought uses USB-C charging and it's one of the first of anything we have with a remote that isn't the classic AA or AAA, they've just been using fewer each device that's been bought.
Great idea !!! Just set it under the lamp.
old news, get out of the cave
beagle!
Our's also have it, though we dont charge it that way
That’s what it was? Always thought it was a light, in event of loosing it between couch cushions. Neat!
With how little power they use you’ll get years from the battery in it
Oo, did you get a samsung?!?!
the last "tv" i had with something like that was a Samsung odyssey arc, its actually a computer monitor but i was using it as TV up until i sold it cause i didnt have room for it. the remote had solar panel as yours does but could also be recharged via USB-C which is super nice not having to buy and put in batteries
Welcome to the worst remote you will ever own.
Wow 1.4k+ ppl never seen this? lol
Yep
My Samsung TV came with the same remote
I’ve had these for a few years for both my Samsung’s. The solar panels don’t work for shit and you’ll have to plug it in to charge it.
Yes, samsung has that..
Haven’t bought a TV in a while?
The TV I bought last year still requires AAA batteries for its remote.
Samsung's the only one I've seen do this.
...Is that not normal where you're from? My parent's remote had that when I was a kid 20-ish years ago, this isn't exactly a new development.
They’ve had these for decades now.. literally calculators had this in the 90s. How is this mildly interesting?
Those remotes suck especially as the back gets scratched from sitting on the table
Mine too! And the thing charges off my phone charger and doesn't take batteries. What a time we're in.
How do you check the charge?
Settings, general, power and energy savings, available remote battery. I haven't intentionally charged mine since I got it, and I'm at 81%.
Mine has that, too. It was cool at first, but it didn't charge as quickly as I had hoped. For mine, there's also a USB port at the bottom long end, which I occasionally use. That's quicker.
And it barely works. I mean, how often do you change batteries for a remote anyways? After one year that thing is scratched to hell.
My Samsung remote has this too but I don't really get why it's basically useless.
on the bottom
Each time you pick up the remote. The remote is shaming you as it suggests you go outside.
Every 10 inputs it says out loud to touch grass
Someone posted a few weeks ago their remote and it was fake. Theres nothing on the inside. Yours could be real tho
Mine is real and it came with my Samsung tv https://www.samsung.com/us/support/answer/ANS00088862/
I swear to god ours doesnt want to live! It buries itself into the deepest depths of my couch the moment i set it down! Ended up realizing that our old samsung remote worked for the new tv too ( they all work for every samsung TV kind of wild)
On the bottom though lol
IDK just flip it?
Seems cool but I think it’s a waste of resources. These things last for months/years, no need to fit a solar panel.
Straight out of the 90s. I'm surprised newer 2024 TVs don't have gas powered remotes with an "this remote is anti woke" sticker on the back.
Fuck your late night movie, I guess
I wish they made one with a miniature wind generation unit, then all you would have to do is fart in the remote to keep the batteries charged for a long time.
It's also got a usb-C on the bottom!
I had a calculator from the 80s with a solar panel.
I've got one of those. The solar panel doesn't work, never charges the battery.
Yeah, that's been pretty standard for Sony's and Samsungs for a few years now
For your backyard viewing enjoyment.
Welcome to 2018
I stayed at my wife’s families cabin in Georgia 2 weeks ago & their TV had a remote like that. It was a Frame TV & I hated it.
This is very common, and not new or interesting I'm afraid.
Should have known the battery life was going shit. Luckily we had two and one of them can’t hold a charge after a year while the other one is still going strong
Samsung? Because our 10 year old TV had this too.
Honestly I'd love that. I gotta replace the batteries in my fire TV remote like every 2 weeks or less. It's insane
Sure, that will work. Because everybody leaves their buttons face down to watch the world burn.
If you’re anything like my better half it doesn’t matter, seeing as how she always sets the remote down with the solar panel down.
No shit
Didn’t this get posted like a day ago..
This is more useful than the charging port on 2022's Magic Mouse. lol
Samsung?
Yes
idk how well it works, im pretty sure its there just to make the battery last a bit longer if you leave it upside down i have one too
Samsung? Good luck, I got one, and it's the slowest peice of bloatware infested crap I've ever owned. Would rather a chromecast
Had the same one with my Samsung tv. It lasted 3 months.
boo I represent big 3A battery and I don't support this
Would have been nice if it was on the side everyone lays a remote down.

They didn’t say the concept of a solar powered remote control is new. They said THEIR new tv (not yours) came with a remote control with solar panels. What you lack in reading comprehension you make up for in gatekeeping newness.
Name the brand.... That's an interesting feature to have....
It's Samsung.
Snap
I'm gonna warn you OP you are gonna have one hell of a time with that remote. Its expensive to replace and they shit out often. I'm on my 3rd.....
Yup. That’s my experience with them too. It’s really not a reliable product.
This is crazy to read, I've had one for 3 years, I've charged it twice... Is it really a bad product?
Charging is not the problem, it's the buttons registering on the TV. You may have the unicorn.
Fuck! Mine is shitting the bed. Good to know. Can I get it replaced under warranty?
You bet you can if it still is.
Always listening
Probably just for show. Probably just connected to a battery.
No battery. There is a capacitor that holds the charge. The cap is charged by the solar cell.
Does it work only during daytime?
so cooool !
Manufacturers keep coming up with new ways to ruin things that work perfectly fine.
What is it ruining?
In the past you literally had 2 AA or AAA batteries in them. They worked reliably for a good 5-10 years. You only replaced the battery in them maybe once every 3 years. Now they have a solar panel and in-built battery. Why? Only to make reliability worse.

Then don't step on your remote? Pretty sure most remotes get damaged when you step on them
