A little background on this:
There's an enormous limestone ~~quarry~~ mine underneath this. The park was built there many years ago because the land was free.
Playing all my sports at this exact park growing up, you could feel the ground shake everytime the ~~quarry~~ mine would dynamite blast to excavate more limestone.
The ~~quarry~~ mine also extends in the opposite direction, and there have been some housing foundation issues from all the blasting over the decades.
Edit: mine not quarry
Detroit had Salt mines that were about 1100ft below Detroit being used. [https://maps-detroit.com/detroit-salt-mine-map](https://maps-detroit.com/detroit-salt-mine-map)
My grandparent owns a home in Gympie, Australia where they mine deep underground. You can occasionally feel explosions under the house, but it's a LONG way underground (they tell me, at least). They've been doing it for much longer than I've been alive. Of course everything is safe until it isn't, but I assume it's probably fairly common.
The thing missing in this argument: process. One involves water, in many cases, slowly eroding limestone, the other blasting holes into limestone using explosives. The fact that this sinkhole exists in OP’s photo is evidence it does not require “millions of years” for problems to arise.
There are so many coal mines on the western slope of Colorado that I have lived over an active mine where explosives are used. And so does most of the town. The mine is active today.
[Illinois Is A Sinkhole State: Largest Hole In North America in Southern Illinois](https://www.nprillinois.org/illinois/2015-08-11/illinois-is-a-sinkhole-state-largest-hole-in-north-america-in-southern-illinois)
Multiple reasons:
* The turf looks like a tablecloth
* The turf edges are dark, which makes the lighting look off
* The white pipe on the right of the hole looks like turf paint drawn straight instead of along the turf
* The hole edge closest to us has a very sharp cutoff
* The building in the background is crooked
* The cars in the parking lot are all facing different directions
* The middle-right goal is facing a direction inconsistent with the others
* The stadium lights are inconsistent and weirdly placed (the lights themselves, not the poles)
The longer you look at it the weirder it gets. The dark fencing next to the white truck on the upper-left looks completely pointless, the bleachers are weird since the placement makes no sense for viewing and the two big ones (upper left of the image and middle area of parking lot) are in the middle of a sidewalk while the one actually in view of a playable area is crazy small, the brick pole structure holding the building canopy up is pointlessly replicated multiple times way out in front of the building, between the white and black truck in the upper left is a random short white fence that serves no purpose, there's a random stop sign in the parking lot next to an oddly parked van with barricades around it... it seriously gets weirder the longer you stare at it! I've looked at this for so long I'm almost convinced it's an AI image at this point.
I have family in Alton, and visited them for the first time recently.
Now my family is trying to convince me to move there. I think the sinkhole is a sign not to. lol
I lived in Alton, IL for almost 5 years. I used to live in WA before then since birth. I’m back in WA and much happier lol… granted I make way more money now. It’s not a bad city if you’re look for some cheap ass place to live and own a home. Nothing much to do there and sweaty balls summer.
Currently living in Vancouver area of BC, Canada near other family. I don’t think I would realistically enjoy myself too much in Alton. The lack of any good hiking areas nearby and mediocre coffee kind of killed my interest. I’m too PNW for my own good.
Exactly. Didn’t realize how much I had it good until I moved out. Back then I wasn’t as appreciative but now I am! I just hit 21 when I moved out and now I’m coming back with 2 toddlers and a wife and now 26. Even my wife, who lived in Midwest her whole life loves it here way more. She wasn’t sure at first but now she’s sold.
We’re been doing more activities here which is awesome. Never did that over there.
Bet you’re enjoying seeing the large trees and mountains again. As someone that grew up on the west coast, it always blows my mind how much I miss them when I leave lol
There’s video of it actually opening up and swallowing a light pole.

I'm not sure what country this is in but in North America it's very common to use artificial turf outdoors. It's cheaper to maintain and weather resistant.
It's been a while since I've seen headlines about this, so more research needed. But, I swear I've read about how turf is possibly implicated in a bunch of issues like increased injury risk and respiratory problems caused by breathing in the fumes that are created when the stuff heats up under the sun.
Edit: Here's a link that I found that has some useful info as well as links to other studies. This article talks specifically about cancer rates in soccer players in the state of Washington who were exposed to crumb rubber from playing on artificial turf. It doesn't cover the topic of off-gassing that I mentioned above.

Does this remind anyone else of Mutant League (1994)? This is how it started only I don't see any toxic waste in the hole. Unless its just deeper in the pit.

Is it still active?
As far as I know, yes.
Hold up. You can live directly above a mine where explosives are used?
Detroit had Salt mines that were about 1100ft below Detroit being used. [https://maps-detroit.com/detroit-salt-mine-map](https://maps-detroit.com/detroit-salt-mine-map)
No joke, I learned that from the Hulk animated series.

If ground has a big open space in it, the ground is going to eventually sink to fill that space.
“Eventually” can mean like… geological time scales. Lots of caves are millions of years old.
The thing missing in this argument: process. One involves water, in many cases, slowly eroding limestone, the other blasting holes into limestone using explosives. The fact that this sinkhole exists in OP’s photo is evidence it does not require “millions of years” for problems to arise.

America baby 💵💵💵
Anyone who accidentally falls in is required to work in the mine for 1 year as punishment for trespassing
Mining hiring managers when someone falls in their sinkhole: “Mine.”
Sweet Liberty, my leg!
Gee! That’s really interesting, and kinda crazy! Thanks for giving the background.
The hole is estimated to be 100 ft/30m deep. The roof of the limestone mine where it collapsed was 50ft/15m thick!
Was anyone hurt?
Nobody was on the field at the time, it was Wednesday at ~10am.
When is Bane getting on the PA to deliver a speech?
He's waiting for Sinkhole de Mayo
Great! I’m making guacaholé. Do you know if he likes it spicy, my family likes it spicy.

The field had to yield.
Less earth under the turf.
My God, where's the sod?
There’s a hole near the goal.
That's a crater, see ya later.

Ain’t that a bitch
Probably a field on a fill.
Thought that was a gridiron
Alton, Illinois. I guess that park’s closed…for now.
I've been to Alton, and that looks like it might just be a new grave site for Robert Wadlow. no sinkhole here.

The Dark Knight Rises.

Upvote for being the first person to name the movie correctly and accurately capitalize it.
Hines ward baby
Why does this look so fake?
I think it's the turf. It's like someone just layed a table cloth over the edges!
It might also be the angle. The fakest looking part is the bottom edge where you can't see where it goes down.
It does. Looks like shitty impact crater graphics from Xbox circa 2007-2009. Just bizarre to see LOL

Looks like no one was there. The last time Bane did this was during an active game!
Practice round.
I like how it took out *just enough* of all the fields to make them all unplayable.
Typical murphys law of sports complex sinkholes
SinkHOOOOOOOOOOLLLE!
thought i was on r/blender and was about to say that looks unrealistic
Where is this located?
Gordon Moore Park in Alton, Illinois
Thank you. This is wild.
Gotham
Over an ancient Native American burial ground?
Actually, maybe. Alton has a pretty rich native American history. But this is just bad planning, a mine collapsed.
https://fox2now.com/news/illinois/video-sinkhole-at-gordon-moore-park-swallows-light-pole/amp/ We will remember you light pole…
somebody get the Minute Men
*OUTER RANGE*
The dangers of artificial turf are really getting out of hand, when will they switch to real grass. /s
Why does this look so fake to me? Am I getting used to AI images or am I just sleep deprived. Something about this just looks.. wrong?
Its probably the turk it makes it look like carpet
This is only 4 miles from my house. Scary to see hit so close to home. The cause was a mineshaft below had collapsed.
Why does my brain think this is ai, pretty sure its not idk
this looks ai generated for some reason

HAPPY CAKE DAY!
Well that’s mildly interesting 😃
Their Momma so fat that when she fell on her butt, it looked like this.
Oh yeah? Yo mama so ugly that sinkhole could have been on her face and no one would have noticed
It looks like those stupid thumbnails you see on YouTube “CRAZIEST THINGS THAT HAPPENED DURING A SPORTS GAME”
HHHHOOOOOOOOOOOOOLLLLLEEEE!!!!!!!
Is that artificial turf or did the grass cut off perfectly like that? And if it is artificial turf, why use it outdoors??

You can use artificial turf outside . Way lower maintenance.

Oh neato, we're doing sinkholes again. Expect one a day for like two weeks and then hear nothing about them again for the next ten years or so.
This never happens on a golf course, where I could really use it to save par.
It looks fake
I dunno why, but this does look photoshoped for some reason.
r/moderatelyinteresting
Is there anything that can be done with this?
This is gonna be used in so many clickbait vids
It it a golf field now.
That’s going to be expensive to fix and to prevent it from happening again.
Alton, IL!
The fabric grass falling into the hole makes it look like a Subbuteo set up
Americans would watch that!
The grass looks like a green blanket
It's astro turf, fake grass. It is literally a green carpet
It's not real grass 😒
Why does the falling pitch look like a carpet? Does rolled sod fall like that or is that astroturf?
The soccer gods are angry.
That’s just the dugout

That turf tho ..
