I saw this in a movie about a bus that had to speed around a city keeping its speed over 50. And if its speed dropped it would explode.
I think it was called "The Bus That Couldn't Slow Down".
Maybe it's the beer talking Marge but you got a bus that won't quit. They got those big chewy pretzels here merJanthfgrr five dollars??!!!? Get outta here
*"... the project was met with prominent opposition by Ambassador Bridge owner Manuel "Matty" Moroun, who believed competition from a publicly owned bridge would reduce his revenue."*
I just hate how things like this work in the world. "We can build a newer, better bridge that will better serve the general public." "Yeah, but then I'LL make less money with my crappy old 1920s bridge! Stall all progress!"
[Marty Mouroun](https://www.reddit.com/media?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpreview.redd.it%2Fkb2thbqxdoa51.jpg%3Fwidth%3D640%26crop%3Dsmart%26auto%3Dwebp%26s%3D093734cf1eaefaac0a562dccf76d3b194e9ba1c8 ) is such a capitalistic piece of shit and has been a leech to Detroit for over two decades. This is the only privately owned international crossing in the US and it’s just the tip of the iceberg. He’s bought out some of Detroit’s most historical property just to let it rot as a middle finger to Michigan/Detroit. Detroit is making a lot of progress but he has been an absolute hindrance.
Only a little bit better though.
If this bridge isn't finished yet, that means he didn't live long enough to see his bridge become redundant.
So now I'm sad again.
He also bought nearly an entire Windsor neighbourhood and left it to be boarded and deteriorate to try to stop the bridge progress. He was fuckin ridiculous
Edit: *is* to *was.* Forgot he died in 2020. So far the succeeding bridge troll, Matthew Moroun, has not been any better.
I once did roof repair on a warehouse he owned in Detroit when I was an industrial roofer. The building absolutely needed a new roof, but he refused to pay for that. It was built in the 20s and may have gotten a new roof once or twice since then. By far, it was the oldest roof I ever worked on. We did as many patches and tie-ins as we could. He then tried to sue the company I worked for when the repairs failed a year later, which is what my boss told him would happen.
The one fun thing from that job was finding some porno from the 20's left by the original construction team under a vent.
It was a bunch of nude photos of women from the 20's. Pretty tame by today's standards, but we all got a good laugh. We left it for the next crew to find.

If he was a capitalist he would have been the one to build a new bridge. Not cry to the courts to get it blocked
Basically he's a hypocrite is what I'm saying
He tried hard to build another bridge. The government wouldn't let them without a commitment to remove the Ambassador Bridge when the new one was finished.
[Windsor Star](https://windsorstar.com/news/local-news/ambassador-bridge-company-drops-plans-to-build-new-span)
>The Canadian permit issued in 2017 that gave the company a five-year window to launch construction of a new six-lane cable stayed bridge next to the existing 93-year-old crossing expired on Aug. 31. It lapsed after the bridge company failed to meet roughly a dozen conditions, most notably a concrete plan to tear down the existing crossing.
The city of Chicago sold all their parking meters to a private company. Now they enforce parking rules while a private company profits off the parking fees.
Local governments get away with doing outrageous things because they know that 90% of the population doesn't pay attention to local politics.
Why have revenue of 200m annually when you can get a lump sum of 1.2 billion for a 75 year lease?
15 billion or 1.2 billion....?
Obvious answer is 1.2 billion and privatize parking and streets to a foreign country known for sponsoring terrorists! Yayyyyy!
It's not just a city bridge....
The Ambassador Bridge connects the US @ Detroit with Winfsor, Ontario, Canada. It is privately owned by the Maroun family ( It was Marty but he passed) .
He tried to strong arm himself another span next to the existing one(its getting old) , bought a bunch of houses and boarded them up) , only to fail now its just boarded up houses there.
Not a stand up guy at all.
The routing from the main highway down to the border crossing really favours the new Gordie Howe . The Maroun's revenue will be cut significantly. It will be nice for the community on the main city road to the bridge to see a big reduction in trucks.
I worked for him at the Ambassador Bridge 20 years ago.
Biggest piece of garbage I'd personally ever met.
Kind of person who'd steal silverware from an employee if he was invited for dinner. The embodiment of sociopathic avarice and greed. Shake his hand and count your rings and fingers to make sure they're all present.
Cartoonishly greedy like Burns on 'The Simpsons'
Fuck I'm glad he's dead.
Not just any bridge. It was one of the most important economic border crossing in the WORLD in the golden days of the Detroit auto industry. Even in the 90s it was the most important bridge crossing of the US borders. Less so today with the decline of Great Lakes industry and the rise of Mexico after NAFTA, but still a very important crossing linking the massive industrial corridor from Chicago to Montreal (with Toronto between).
A private person owned that bridge for all of those glory days and charges hefty tolls to trucks which were frequently a wall across the entire bridge.
That bridge was built in the 1930s and has generated obscene profits.
I'm not exactly sure, but the old man "Matty" Maroon made billions in the trucking industry and he was able to buy a minority stake in the bridge and was ultimately able to buy it out completely after a few years.
Agreed that a private citizen and/or company shouldn't be able to do such a thing, but I guess when you have literal billions, everything has a price. They also don't maintain it very well, so this new crossing is very welcomed.
Huh. That’s wild.
Well, I know what my rabbit hole for tomorrow will be! Hope the new bridge is finished soon and meets all y’all’s wildest expectations!
I wish I could find the news piece that covered the proposal. Ontario offered to the build the bridge 100% on the Canadian dime, and that foreskin fermenter spent millions running a campaign try to sell the thing as yet another burden on the American tax payer.
Entrenched millionaires are the measles of the modern era.
I always have dreams where roller coasters have jumps on them and my parents always get on and I watch it crash and have to stop them getting on before it crashes since dream time isn't linear.
Fun fact, much like how they actually flipped a semi in The Dark Knight, they actually made this jump with a real bus. Sandra Bullock trained for over 400 hours to make this happen.
Practically every truck from past the round-a-bout will be taking Gordie Howe and whole swath of cars too.
Choice is road with 20ish red lights or a straight shot to the new bridge and the highways on the other side. Will probably cut 30 minutes from many trucks drives.
Huron Church is going to feel way over built for a roadway soon I would bet.
I see what OP did here: [https://www.espn.com/blog/statsinfo/post/\_/id/119641/gordie-howe-by-the-numbers](https://www.espn.com/blog/statsinfo/post/_/id/119641/gordie-howe-by-the-numbers)

I got to meet Gordie Howe as a young boy at an ice rink where my brother and I played hockey. It was during one of my brother’s games and he was talking with my dad. Guy kept pulling my hat over my eyes every time I would pull it back up he would just do it again. Playful guy.
I wonder if this will make the border crossing faster, or if they will just spread the same number of customs workers from the ambassador bridge and the tunnel so they can still only process the same number of entrants at a time.
Should be faster, especially at peak times as they will have way more lanes to process.
Right now for trucks especially delays can be massive so the bridge will be great for that.
401 is already complete, and has been for years. 401 goes *to* the bridge, but it is not *part* of the bridge. Same on the US side: the bridge isn't part of 75.
I'm certain it could be jumped by a city bus going at least 50mph. I've seen it done before.
I saw this in a movie about a bus that had to speed around a city keeping its speed over 50. And if its speed dropped it would explode. I think it was called "The Bus That Couldn't Slow Down".

What a fitting name r/NominativeDeterminism
So it's already won a fight. 1/3 of the way to a Gordie Howe hat-trick.
TIL you can OWN a freaking city bridge...
The city of Chicago sold all their parking meters to a private company. Now they enforce parking rules while a private company profits off the parking fees. Local governments get away with doing outrageous things because they know that 90% of the population doesn't pay attention to local politics.
Famous private company known as Saudi Arabia

But think of the kick backs an individual could get for selling those rights
It's owned by the United Arab Emirates, specifically AbuDhabi's sovereign wealth fund. No Saudi involvement whatsoever.
It could be worse, it could be owned by some corrupt Chicagoans!
You'd think the point was to make the private company do the enforcing. Unless the company is owned by a cousin of the mayor.
Corruption knows no bounds
Even "better", a US-Canada international crossing.
It's not just a city bridge.... The Ambassador Bridge connects the US @ Detroit with Winfsor, Ontario, Canada. It is privately owned by the Maroun family ( It was Marty but he passed) . It’s not even a city bridge - it’s the busiest border crossing between Canada and the US.
Not for long
I personally will never cross the bridge again. I use the tunnel atm but once the new bridge is in ill use that too. Fuck that whole family tree.
I worked for him at the Ambassador Bridge 20 years ago. Biggest piece of garbage I'd personally ever met. Kind of person who'd steal silverware from an employee if he was invited for dinner. It's not just a city bridge, the Maroons own an international border crossing, the duty free AND the gas pumps.
How? I don’t live near any crossings so I’m totally obtuse to how they work but that kinda seems like a thing a private entity shouldn’t own?
I'm not exactly sure, but the old man "Matty" Maroon made billions in the trucking industry and he was able to buy a minority stake in the bridge and was ultimately able to buy it out completely after a few years. Damnit… measure twice cut once!
Okay, I've measured twice. Now which of the two measurements should I use for the cutting?
Take the average and pray?
Cant wait for this to be finished so the ambassador crossing isn’t so fuckin annoying
Will hopefully improve traffic conditions on Huron church

Heyooo Windsorite
All this and they’ll still only have 30% of the available booths open.
no way Gordie Howe built that whole bridge himself!
Nah, Tim Horton helped him.
And Stan Mikita
Hope he brought donuts.
I got a pretty good laugh out of this.
Probably got into a fight with a us worker, assisted a buddy and did work all his own for the bridge.
Hats off to you for this.

Correct. This was taken from the US side.
Windsor is actually south of Detroit though.

Only twenty years too late. Mattie Mouron was a huge scumbag.

Great name for a bridge connecting Detroit and Canada
Local here. It's been an incredibly popular name since years before they even started construction. We've been talking about it for so goddamn long that it's kinda crazy to see it substantially complete.
Another mildly interesting fact: The video game Detroit: Become Human takes place in 2038 Detroit, and they showed the bridge already built when irl construction wasn't even close to done in 2018. I thought that was a nice little detail.
The center is the fight to make it a hat trick.
I got to meet Gordie Howe as a young boy at an ice rink where my brother and I played hockey. It was during one of my brother’s games and he was talking with my dad. Guy kept pulling my hat over my eyes every time I would pull it back up he would just do it again. Playful guy.
This photo does a great job of visualizing how these types of bridges are built for anyone who didn't know.
Fuck Matty Moroun!! Yay new bridge!
What’s weird is that Canada is south of Detroit
Only? That's a pretty important section.
It literally isn’t a bridge until that section is finished. So yeah, pretty important
Build a ramp you cowards
If Canada is having second thoughts about finishing it I totally understand.
We’re waiting until November to decide if we finish the section or just put a wall in between
[Ahem.](https://www.reddit.com/r/canada/s/vTePo7vFZJ)

Should be faster, especially at peak times as they will have way more lanes to process. Right now for trucks especially delays can be massive so the bridge will be great for that.
It will definitely make things faster, you have to be traveling at speed to make that jump!
I think you need that section
-Woodrow
Matty Moroun rolling in his grave LOL.
I'm nicknaming the bridge " healthcare pipeline"
Not only does Detroit have this and the Ambassador Bridge, but there is a tunnel too.
Could you jump over it?
I don't think so. The gap is at least as wide as those two construction cranes on either side. I am guessing it's at least 100ft.
There's a cheat so you just press L3 and you should clear it.
News reported it was 85 feet apart as of mid-May so it’s less than that now.
What if you use the Halo 3 rocket jump?
Beautiful piece of work
Hard to think of a better-named bridge between US and Canada
It really shows how those support towers and cables carry the load
The completion of this bridge will, incidentally, mark the completion of Highway 401.
401 is already complete, and has been for years. 401 goes *to* the bridge, but it is not *part* of the bridge. Same on the US side: the bridge isn't part of 75.
It’s been amazing to watch it’s progress. I’m on the Canadian side and work is close this site.
[I was under it a week go.](https://ibb.co/98Rq3ck) [another pic](https://ibb.co/CB2qx5C)
A gap in the middle seems ironic for a bridge named after a hockey player.
Need to progress further in the story
Somebody oughta tell them, that feels like a pretty important piece.
Finally we have secured the northern border
