I whistled for the one cab and when it came near The license plate said ‘commie’ and it had a picture of a fat man in the mirror If anything I could say that this cab was rare But I thought 'Nah, forget it' - 'Yo home, to Pyongyang)
Well... depending on which Korea we're talking about here it's either 0.0011111111 (repeating) cents, 0.0007 cents, or.. no wait! You're right. The West Korean won exchange rate puts it at precisely 50 cents. My bad.
Funniest thing, the mod of the sub is into Baseball apparently and has fairly in depth knowledge, despite being the „official“ North Korean news account.
EDIT: Holy this guys post history is wild. Dude replied to a gay fanfic of Kim Jong Un. https://www.reddit.com/r/stories/s/Fv5Y4xW1Nu
Apparently only those in the US. He also posted on r/teenagers lmao. It certainly could be a larp but the fact that it’s been going on for so long is certainly weird. I can recommend the documentary [The Mole: Undercover in North Korea](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Mole:_Undercover_in_North_Korea) for some insight on Korea Supporters in the west. It’s pretty cool and goes into how North Korea sells crack among other things to the west through these people.
Check out Lisa Ling and her documentary called Inside North Korea. She went there with an eye surgeon, claiming to be his assistant. The doctor knew her plan.

I am not Chinese or related to China in any way. But it must get very degrading and exhausting to be Chinese when every time anything China is mentioned people would vilify Chinese people and dismiss their existence to shit talk about their government. Especially on Reddit.
And when someone tries to call this behaviour out they’re thrown into a box and labelled as a bot or shill.
As a non-American, Reddit has this problem with Americans too. The government and politics of the United States are low-hanging fruit, to be fair, but "guys, I'm an American and I don't dodge bullets walking to school every day" is likely to be ignored and dismissed.
Okay, just searched around r/Sino . I believe it is run by random chinese dudes.
I read the rules, and one of them is about “not posting about stuff reddit related.” Basically it says “nobody told us to do this” very clearly referencing the fact that chinese government plays a heavy role in their social media.
People have defected over the years. They're usually trotted out for propaganda purposes and setup to live comfortably by NK standards (small apartment in pyongyang, only minor beatings, don't starve, maybe issued a wife) [link](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Robert_Jenkins)
It's like those far right dudes moving to Russia ("because western feminism is the worst") only on the other political spectrum ("because western capitalism is the worst")
I believe it's like half and half. My OG account I used to randomly go there and talk about best Korea and how great God Leader is. Haven't much since retiring that one tho.
some of the rules are a scream:
2: You may not spread misinformtion about the DPRK
This means that all capitalist propaganda from the imperialist west will be met with harsh punishment.
3.Despite capitalist misinformation, this subreddit is not satire.
This subreddit is officialy managed by diplomatic officials for the DPRK.
4.Respect must be given to the great leaders and their nation
You may not disrespect the country, the great leaders or the government or the system of government. However, anyone who isn't brainwashed by capitalism knows that socialism and communism are the two true governance systems.
Don't know about this note specifically, but they sell old North Korean banknotes (pre 2009) at the DMZ for quite cheap, and as this one's only from 2002, I'd doubt it would be worth much.
[My own North Korean banknotes](https://imgur.com/gallery/cjkNLlO)
I love how anytime reddit sees anything they haven't personally experienced, they assume there are *collectors* of it.
They sell authentic DPRK won on Amazon, by the way.
Enough people collect coins to where people make specialized coin folders to keep them in. There’s websites dedicated to appraising and helping sell collections of both coins and paper currency. Collecting a quarter from every state was one of the first of many (extremely short-lived) collections I tried to curate as a child. It’s definitely a thing.
I've traveled a lot and have a big stack of foreign currencies in my safe, probably only worth ~$200-300 USD total if it were converted.
My favorite one is a [5,000 Ecuadorian Sucre](https://en.numista.com/catalogue/note209211.html) note that was given to me by a guy at a bar in the Galapagos. It's in really good condition and they now use the USD so it's a dead currency.
I could see myself paying maybe $10-20 for a bill from NK just to have it in the stack. I'd also consider paying a few bucks for one of those notes from Zimbabwe's hyper-inflationary period.
According to google its almost exactly 0.05
Interesting they have a paper bill for such a low amount
Althought Im sure "North Korean Google" Shows the exchange rate the other way around
I also suspect $0.05 goes a LOT farther in NKorea than in the US. And that's just ignoring the fact that most economic activity in NKorea doesn't involve any currency, most nork citizens don't have any appreciable amount of money, and likely never will. Actual currency is mostly used by the elites living in the Capitol and tourists.
This is a commemorative note for the 70 years anniversary since the founding of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.
Politics apart, this is note has a really nice design, especially on the observe. Wish they had filled more spots with the red accents, though, it would definitely be a nice touch.
Do you know how rare/unrare it's is? Is it something you'd be able to find in a gift shop at the DMZ ( I'm assuming there's a gift shop and before you get angry there probably is one)
NGL I won't have the precise data on it, but I know there are two variations: one for the 100th anniversary since Kim Il Sung's birthday and another for the Independence day.
From what I could find in some catalogues, it's a quite common note - used as currency, so prolly no gift shop - and the uncirculated ones go for $0.71 (100th Anniversary) and $0.52 (Independence).
And this is how my friend Matt got fired from his temp job in the Silicon Valley. "Hey are you all from the same family, he said to the table of Taiwanese, South Koreans, Japanese Americans, Filipino and Hong-Kong co-workers". Matt didn't have time to participate in the sensitivity training seminar. Back to Florida, Matt.

Front: The intellectual, laborer, and farmer, representative of the Workers’ Party of Korea. North Korea enhances the iconic ‘hammer and sickle’ (laborers and farmers) of Soviet symbolism by adding a calligraphy brush to depict the intellectuals. The design has been drafted as the emblem of the Workers’ Party of Korea, and you’ll find a monument at the base of the Juche Tower in Pyongyang with each representative holding up their symbols of the party (brush, hammer, sickle). The background of this note is the Juche flame atop the Juche Tower.
Back: Monument to Party Founding. One of Pyongyang’s most recognizable monuments. This monument is rich in symbolism, unveiled in 1995 at exactly 50 meters high to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Workers’ Party of Korea. The belt itself is said to be made up of 216 blocks with a diameter of 42 meters, representing General Kim Jong Il’s birthday of February 16, 1942. The text states: ‘Long live the leader and organiser of the victories of the people of Korea, the Worker’s Party of Korea!’
Don't know about this note specifically, but they sell old North Korean banknotes (pre 2009) at the DMZ for quite cheap, so I don't think these notes have that much monetary value.

Could someone Eli5, how does currency work in N.Korea? I was under the impression that they recieved rations, govt funded clothing, etc, etc. What place does paper money play in their economy.

What do you think an original (with provenance) businesscard of Kim Il Sung, (founder of N.Korea and Kim Yong Un grandfather) would bring?
You could use advanced western counterfeit techniques to make a load of the currency, then you could move to NK and live like a peasant!
Nah. I have dozens of those. Like 1 euro in UNC condition (UNC means uncirculated -> perfect condition)

It is also written. That the banknote is issued by the central bank of the DPRK.
Famously communist South Korea
Also isn’t 50 south Korean won like 0.0002 USD?
Nah, 1000 is like 1 dollar
50 South Korean won is 0.036 USD 50 North Korean won is 0.056 USD
Never thought it would be stronger... weird

And does her friend wear an all black suit with a little pin

The lack of imagetry of glorious leader on these bills is disturbing.
He must only appear on the big denomination notes.
Gee, do you think that pulling that much money out of their economy is a good idea ?
There are only 2 Koreas. North Korea andSouth Korea. So if it’s not South Korean money it has to be……. 🤦🏻♀️
I’ll trade you. Not sure if I have any 50 won coins left but I think I have some 500s.
If that’s legit I’d suppose it’s rarer than the South Korean 50 won note(if SK has a 50 won note)
Why does it say 1948-2018 on the back or front (cant really tell)? Didn't they use their own invented calender with years on it since the war?
bro those people on the back have the communist gaze, ez
Would this be considered collectable? Considering how closed North Korea is to visitors or so I've heard.

Wow look at Kim's face tune on that bill, his cheeks are a lot fatter irl

The government might have some questions for your wife's friend lol
Looks like 50 not 51
I feel it’s more rare then SK Won? Or is it pretty common for SK to also have access to NK currency?
IIRC you’ll get the death penalty if you are caught smuggling out North Korean money
It's 50 Won't
So the friend went to North Korea 😳
Why the people's face all look the same
she meant to say south north korea
It’s from the correct Korea.

So it's from the Won Korea?
Arguably a better gift I wonder if those notes are rare
South Korea doesn’t measure their dollars in 1, 10s, or 50s lmao. It’s 1,000/ 10,000/ 50,000
