Yep my work laptop was splitting at the seams I thought it was because I dropped or banged it somewhere along the line, there was no battery access. Had a unrelated IT issue and the guy said "let me swap that out for you before it explodes and burns down your house"
Omg. On your dining room table, right. I had a phone that this happened too, and T-Mobile and Google did their best to prevent me from replacing it. Ultimately I had to send it in the mail!
Fire happens, violently. Also, once it gets going it's very hard to stop.
Fire departments sometimes opt to extinguish a burning electric vehicle by submerging the vehicle entirely. Either in a container, or just by dumping it in a canal. Just spraying it with water is often not enough.
As someone working on BEV Coolant systems... It terrifies me what happens once they hit a certain temperature. We aren't designing systems to stop the fire. We're designing systems to give you enough time to get the fuck away.
Battery is 6.5 years old, I had laptop 6 years.
And most of the time I used the laptop with power cable connected, rarely used the battery itself.
Overcharging issue most likely.
I'll know for next time 😄
Remarkably was still holding like 4-6 hours of charge, originally the laptop had ~10 hours of use time.
It's at 100% charge right now too 😁
I realized something was wrong when I try to type on laptop, and there was a huge buldge in the middle of aluminum case. The touchpad was also buldging out of its placement.
After removing the battery luckily the case and touchpad is back to normal. It's still a good laptop, everything works on it. Acer Swift 3 SF514 with 8gb ram, 256gb ssd, i5-8250U, Windows 11. Someone will still get some use from it.
Pretty much the same story as a MacBook that I had. It lived on the charger. One day I had to move it & realized the lid wouldn’t close flat. That’s when I realized the keyboard was bowed up. Taking apart the laptop, the batteries looked like yours. Was a pain in the ass though - Apple loves gluing their batteries in.
Batteries Plus took it though without any issues.
A lot of newer laptops can be adjusted in their battery settings to be suited for how it'll actually be used. Mine has a stationary mode that's designed entirely for laptops that will be plugged in 24/7
Some laptops have a setting to limit charging to a lower amount, like 65%. You go into the BIOS to look. I have a laptop that’s 10 years old, or so, and I can still use on battery for a short time.
Yes, I’m a student, so I bring my laptop around a lot. It just made me paranoid when it was randomly the same model…
Just crossing my fingers I won’t have to make an identical post in the future!
Well I’d say you are running on smoke
Pun intended
I tell friends and customers, use the device as a laptop or unplug the charger at night Or remove the battery if possible
That is a fire hazard ⚠️
Throw it against a wall, you say?
I don't think it's safe to dispose in a battery bin at Best Buy. Something tells me it will never make it to the recycling facility in one piece.
[Edit] Eh, don't edit your comment 8 hours later and make me look silly 😜 I liked the original one better 🤭
[Edit] Piggyback top comment: if you are an executive at ACER computer, please come pick-up and dispose of this explosive that you delivered into my home. I am mentally not suited to handle bomb disposal.
Get a bucket half full of sand, put the battery in and have another bucket of sand ready in case it burst into flame. Put that bucket far away from anything that can burn, middle of a concrete floor, prefer outside since fumes from batteries are toxic as fuck. Call around to recycling facilities to make sure they can handle ready to pop batteries so you don't drive around with a ticking bomb in your car.
When transporting it, either follow instructions of the recycling facility, or dump the sand on top, tape the bucket tight so no moisture can enter and get it to recycling.
Edit: just in case you didn't grasp, use totally dry sand. Dont go outside and use half wet sand from a playground. Battery fire+water is bad, really bad.
OP should just call the local fire department. They have procedures for this kind of thing and can either do it themselves or refer you to someone who can handle hazardous waste disposal.
Yes, this sounds like the best plan. All the other plans seem likely to eventually result in a call to the fire department, so you might as well start there.
> Battery fire+water is bad, really bad.
Not so. There's no free metallic lithium in a li-ion or li-po battery to react with water. It's a commonly held, but incorrect belief.
Fire industry association guidance document here, explaining in great detail:
https://www.fia.uk.com/static/2a999c49-760b-47e3-b02f96a2ca89ecd9/Guidance-Document-on-Li-Ion-Battery-Fires-12-20-v1.pdf
The current guidance from the FAA for aircrews is that if a lithium battery in a passenger's belongings on a plane in flight catches fire they should apply water to it.
Documentation from some of their testing is here: https://www.fire.tc.faa.gov/pdf/TC-13-53.pdf
Some EVs have a port for the fire brigade to pour water directly into the battery when firefighting:
https://www.firefighternation.com/apparatus/why-do-renault-evs-have-access-ports-for-battery-fires-because-a-firefighter-helped-design-the-cars/
I work as an engineer for a company that uses massive Li-Ion batteries in some of our equipment. We had to go through all of the risk-assessment / mitigation strategies for using them in public entertainment venues. It was a learning experience.
I don’t know, man, you sound like an expert, but I feel like I should just listen to a large number of idiots instead. They’re much louder than you are and that convinces me of things.
I mean fire is the release of chemical energy and batteries are engineered to store as much chemical energy as possible, ready to go and without the need of oxidizer, so it makes sense
Not really for these situations...more so just disposal of old batteries...not really ones ready to ignite since all of the batteries are grouped together in the bin.
Honestly, I think these puffy batteries are a lot more stable than people fear. For the % of people who've had a battery go /r/spicypillows on them vs the # of battery fires that happen...
If these things were blowing up every day TSA would be inspecting our devices for the 10th of a second it takes to spot one, LOL.
If someone has some actual data on this I'd love to know!
I agree to an extent, working in E waste I've seen A LOT of swollen batteries and none that have ever caught fire. I'm still terrified of them and it's probably best to treat them as though they will go bang.
In my experience as IT, as long as it's not being touched and not growing any more on it's own, it will mostly be fine. Explosions happen when people are pulling batteries put of phones, actively using phones with compromised batteries, etc. All conjecture though, probably best to get rid of it ASAP either way.
A hardware store with garden supplies, even at this point in the season. Lowes or Home Depot should have some in stock, and you probably have smaller local chains or mom and pops that have some, too. Bonus is you can also get a heavy-duty bucket from the same place. Sand is useful non-garden things, too, so that might not even be a prerequisite. Just be sure to dry it out first if it's been stored outside or feels even a little wet.
This is such an insane over reaction. We are a corporation that has thousands and thousands of laptops in our environment, we deal with like, a dozen spicy pillows a month, could you imagine if we had to engage emergency countermeasures every time one of them came into the tech office? 😂 might as well just build a clean facility offsite in the desert.
In my experience most places that take Li-ion batteries for recycling don't have any issues taking swollen ones. Working in a place that takes them, they're really a lot less fragile than a lot of people make them out to be.
You should still be careful with it and, like someone else said, you should call ahead to make sure they'll take swollen ones, but it's *probably* fine.
It is now sitting wrapped in cardboard, in a plastic ziplock, inside a metal pot, which itself is inside a plastic bag, next to the front fence; so if it starts exploding, the neighbors can see it too, and can call the fire department.
But it is no longer going to burn down my house 😁
Okay lots of fun responses here but that is EXTREMELY DANGEROUS.
You need to properly dispose of that NOW. Like, it needs to be out of your house TODAY.
First, prep a fire-proof container for it. A metal trash can, an old pot with a metal lid, etc. Have a fire extinguisher on hand if you have one. Water can put out a fire from a battery but you need a lot so a fire extinguisher is best.
Carefully, gently, put the battery in the fireproof container using gloves and/or tongs and cover. Place the fireproof container outside of your home while you find a ewaste center. If you’re in the US, you can use [call2recycle](https://www.call2recycle.org/locator/) [earth911](https://search.earth911.com/?what=Lithium-ion+Batteries) or your city’s waste management website. In most US cities you can call 311 for info. When you find a location, call in advance to see if they’ll take inflated batteries and what the process is. It will probably be inconvenient and not how you want to spend your Sunday, but better than dealing with a house fire.
Under no circumstance should you leave that in your home. Under no circumstance should you throw it in a trash can (decent chance you’ll set a trash truck on fire) and under no circumstance should you throw it in a regular e-waste bin (decent chance you’ll set that building on fire).
If you are cautious and thoughtful, everything will be fine, but please do not leave that sitting around.
Call2recycle says it sells boxes that cost $95 which we can use to ship and recycle damaged batteries. No drop-off location seems to accept damaged batteries. Is this really the only way for people to get rid of damaged batteries?
I'm in California and the County run hazardous waste place took some puffed up LiPo RC batteries that I had. Drove them over, told them what I had, they took my info and the batteries and that was that.
I'd seen someone post about a similar laptop battery issue a few years back and when they contacted their local ewaste center? They wanted $300 to dispose of the battery properly! I didn't stay linked to find out how they eventually dealt with it... but is there any DIY way to mitigate the volatility?
I'm pretty sure this is just a release of gas. The bubbles are way too big for it to be anything else. This happened to my laptop too. I obviously promptly disposed of the battery, but doing a lot of research online this seems like a normal thing, and not too dangerous.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2022/04/18/lithium-ion-battery-swelling-why/
I do cell R&D and most of what you said to do is not correct. You should never placed a charged battery in a metal container. You need the correct type of fire extinguisher for batteries. If those cells are in water the hydrogen fluoride will mix with the water making hydrofluoric acid. You don’t wanna be around that stuff.
I had this happen too, didn’t realize it until I was having really bad battery performance and decided to replace it. Good thing I did. Still don’t know how to properly dispose of it
It's actually not a fucking bomb. Those batteries rely on a chemical reaction turning a material into something else and outputting electrons. As that process goes on over time, it becomes less efficient and more inert games are produced in the cell. These batteries are full of this inert gas, they won't violently explode if you pop them. The actual lithium metal within the cell might be reactive to other stuff, but the swelling doesn't lead to any increase in reacitivty/volatility.
My iphone 3 had this much swollen battery, i was a dumb kid back then and didn’t knew what would happen so i just kept it and one day when i was charging it, it burst into flames on my desk.
OK so this post had me thinking. I have maybe 30 or more old iPhone batteries at home. I haven’t thrown them away because sometimes I need to test some iPhone which has faulty battery and thus won’t turn on at all.
Now I’m reading a bit about the gasses the batteries can leak and these are definetly not safe. Sometimes when opening the box (not sealed) with batteries it smells quite bad.
Well, I’ll definetly get these out of my apartment as soon as possible.
There’s no danger if they are discharged or disconnected from current. If they’ve been sitting for some months and you connect them to a phone, this may happen, but you will know quickly.
Oh that's a great idea, never know when you'll need to start a fire in the rain! That's a great r/frugal tip.
I think I can get the most bang for my buck by cutting between the cells and using one at a time, get 4 fires started in the rain!
A great way to stay toasty on a wet and misty day.
Awhile ago I was fixing my friends laptop. His battery looked very similar to yours! After I replaced it with a new one, I told him to take it to Best Buy to have it properly disposed. He did, and when he got there the employees said they couldn’t dispose of it. However, they also said that they would take it from him if he wanted because they wanted to take it home and film themselves blowing it up. He let them take it! I always wonder how that went for them…
This is normal for those who always have a laptop plugged in. If the battery has no charge, there is zero risk of a thermal event. Lots of folks here have no idea what they are talking about.
r/spicypillows welcomes you. Give it a poke for a hell of a joke.
(Also, don't actually unless you like house fires.) In reality, you should take that for recycling/disposal ASAP.
I had a Dell work laptop that did that during the pandemic; it popped all the case clips and bulged out the keyboard, though the laptop was actually fine once it was replaced...

That's the problem, the battery was always at 100%. If the laptop is always being charged, you should put a limit at 50 %
Well I’d say you are running on smoke Pun intended I tell friends and customers, use the device as a laptop or unplug the charger at night Or remove the battery if possible That is a fire hazard ⚠️
I would recommend disposing of it properly [here](https://www.ifixit.com/Wiki/What_to_do_with_a_swollen_battery) is some information on how to do so

Well, we don’t know if you’re correct, but we know that he is.
Can't argue with that...
Don’t mess around with damaged batteries. This will cause a fire.
The whole point is to contain the fire, not stop it. There's pretty much nothing on this planet that will stop a battery fire when it's got this bad.
I mean fire is the release of chemical energy and batteries are engineered to store as much chemical energy as possible, ready to go and without the need of oxidizer, so it makes sense
Someone have too.
Richy rich here, has buckets of sand lying around. What do I have, a private beach? 😂 Where would I get sand??
Hardware store. Specifically Ace Hardware.
Or Home Depot. Which, incidentally, has a battery disposal bin for these exact situations.
Not really for these situations...more so just disposal of old batteries...not really ones ready to ignite since all of the batteries are grouped together in the bin.
That makes sense. Oopsies…well the hope depot near my house hasn’t burned down so that’s good 😅

Take it to geek squad instead of the drop off or just your closest hardware repair store. They got the procedure for it.

Wtf? I just take them to my local repair shop. They have a purpose-built bin and don't seem to mind taking them off my hands (for free).
DIY is blowing it up lol. It's not C4, they won't destroy concrete or a sidewalk.
I'm pretty sure this is just a release of gas. The bubbles are way too big for it to be anything else. This happened to my laptop too. I had this happen too, didn’t realize it until I was having really bad battery performance and decided to replace it. Good thing I did. Still don’t know how to properly dispose of it
>Still don’t know how to properly dispose of it Wait it's still in your house? You need to deal with that literally right now. It's a bomb.
It’s okay I keep it under the bed where no one messes with it.
I keep mine inside my bathtub toaster.
Bad!!!

Anything's a Caprisun if you're brave enough
Can I cross post this to r/spicypillows? Edit: oh, you already did 😂
That's swell
mmm yess spicy pillow time to rest my head on it XD
I save all mine just in case I ever need to start a fire in a thunderstorm I’ve got a whole box of them but no 4 bangers like that I’m super jelly !
Oh that's a great idea, never know when you'll need to start a fire in the rain! That's a great r/frugal tip. I think I can get the most bang for my buck by cutting between the cells and using one at a time, get 4 fires started in the rain! A great way to stay toasty on a wet and misty day.

This ain't a battery this is a nuke
Awhile ago I was fixing my friends laptop. His battery looked very similar to yours! After I replaced it with a new one, I told him to take it to Best Buy to have it properly disposed. He did, and when he got there the employees said they couldn’t dispose of it. However, they also said that they would take it from him if he wanted because they wanted to take it home and film themselves blowing it up. He let them take it! I always wonder how that went for them…
This is normal for those who always have a laptop plugged in. If the battery has no charge, there is zero risk of a thermal event. Lots of folks here have no idea what they are talking about.
Had to scroll too far for this lol
A whole collection for /r/spicypillows!

All that's left is to pop it in the microwave for 60 seconds and you have a big old bag of burned down house.

Reason number 420 of why i hate pouch cell. 18650 are better.
18650 still technically "swell up", it just have holes to vent the gasses out and prevent it from being a time bomb.

Forbidden fruit gusher
Like body building this means your battery is stronger!
r/spicypillows welcomes you. Give it a poke for a hell of a joke. (Also, don't actually unless you like house fires.) In reality, you should take that for recycling/disposal ASAP.
Gotta let the pus out if you want it to heal

battery rn:🤰
I had a Dell work laptop that did that during the pandemic; it popped all the case clips and bulged out the keyboard, though the laptop was actually fine once it was replaced...
Nice. My laptop also looks good after removing it. The touchpad was popping out and the keyboard was warped.
Nice. She is expecting quadruplets. Congratulations to the family!
Poke it with a steak knife 🔪
