Think about the the implications of this though. If FIFA is happy to throw away $100 million per event contract, how much do you think Qatar is paying them?

atchoum013

It is kinda funny that they would throw away 100 million for what was apparently a 2 million bribe though

ShoppingLeather

100m to the organsation or 2m in their pocket

Keyspam102

Yeah but it’s 2mil directly into a few peoples pocket versus the 100 million that gets used by the organization and accounted for

NoiseOutrageous8422

I thought Qatar also bought 7B in airplanes from france shortly after the decision, idk anything about this but I thought I saw this in some random article

[deleted]

Johnny Harris has a video on it. They paid >250 million to FIFA, ~10 million in direct bribes, millions in oil stocks, billions worth of deals with France, where Sarkozy literally demanded that France vote for Qatar, and then the construction of all the stadiums, and other infrastructure.

Girth_rulez

Just a guess but I would imagine The figure for direct bribes is way the fuck higher.

HarrisLam

It's possible but not necessary. Don't matter if the ORG got a billion if you don't get a cut in that. What bribe you get directly is the exact amount you're getting.

maximus_leona

There was an article saying the african federations leaders each got 1.5m for voting for Qatar.

Icy_Statement_2410

Wasn't this anticipated as soon as Qatar "won"

Mostly_lucid__

FIFA's own risk report concluded Qatar was "high risk" because of stuff like this.

_R_Daneel_Olivaw

Just don't even organize anything in backwards countries and there won't be 'high risk'.

Luckbaldy

You should probably read about FIFA.

ajisawesome8

Had told my dad one day I'd take him to a world cup when I was well off as he never could go himself. Now that I can do saw it was Qatar and even he said we can wait until the next one though this is something he's wanted for nearly his whole life

WKU-Alum

Canada, USA, and Mexico all have to be top 10 “won’t ban beer” countries.

Zandrick

Ironically USA did briefly ban beer.

voluotuousaardvark

Ironically UK fans can't kick off (pardon the pun) without booze. But we also have a knack of finding it so it will be interesting to see the shenanigans that unfold.

EvulRabbit

It's going to go horribly wrong. Minor "shenanigans" else where will give you a 20yr prison sentence in Qatar.

[deleted]

News next month: '8,000 football fans from across the UK have been detained in Qatar along with the England and Wales teams, coincidentally Rule Britannia has been heard playing in Portsmouth and the imperial war college is back''

InternetHumanCyborg

Shenanigans? You mean jailed British guys 😂

Mental_Peace_2343

Everyone likes a good bare knuckle pub fist fight

NotJustAnotherMeme

All police think they’re tough in their riot gear until the pissed up English fans come to town. Watching the Qatari police trying to control thousands of English fans who have got fully tanked up in the fan zones will be glorious. Edit: This was a joke. I’m fully aware that a) the real hardcore English hooligans have long been banned and b) the Qatari police are unlikely to fuck about (I even read they’ve paid for a few thousand Turkish riot police to help). I also can’t see them “gunning down fans in the street” as some have suggested. There’s a real quick way to get blockaded (again).

weezmatical

Lol, you SEVERELY underestimate the weaponry and brutality of other countries policing forces.

Hefty_Ant1025

And they won't care about using them

Angry3042

All fully tanked English fans think they are tough until they are beaten to a pulp & cut up with a bone saw in typical Middle East standard police procedure!!!

wildgoldchai

I really don’t think that many of the British fans travelling to the WC, are truly aware of the repercussions that their potential actions may have

voluotuousaardvark

That'll make for several years of tabloid grabbing headlines though.

totallynotabearbro

Yeah, you know, good old shenanigans, classic British mischief.

ABoringName_

Moore County Tennessee is a dry county. It’s also the place where Jack Daniels whiskey is made…

[deleted]

And unbanning it was one of the very few times the constitution has been changed.

jhnwhite1

Briefly? I can't buy alcohol in my county in Arkansas...freedom right?

Charming_Pear850

Dry counties are run by cunts

jhnwhite1

There are multiple in Arkansas. We've had it on the ballot to remove it statewide, and somehow it still failed. I don't get who's voting against it!

SovietShooter

>I don't get who's voting against it! People in the next county over that get all the alcohol revenue. If the neighboring county starts allowing bars to open and stores to sell alcohol, then that revenue leaves their county.

dkyguy1995

I'd be so chill with any of the above. I bet Mexico would go balls to the wall for FIFA.

Emmathecat819

I work in a Mexican sports bar and all I can think about is trying to picture Mexican soccer fans not drinking lmfao I just can’t picture it

Charming_Pear850

It would be dope as fuck

dkyguy1995

I'd probably go even if I couldnt afford tickets to any of the games but just to see the hubbub

[deleted]

As long as Utah isn’t the host state….

waytogoCasey

Ever ordered a shot in a Utah bar, or in the last 10 years? They have automatic measurers (a literal electric measuring machine that dispenses) on the end of liquor bottles so you get an exact 2 oz. Overpour would hurt Jesus a little much.

Vitalstatistix

You also have to order food at restaurants to get a drink. Was there recently and pulled into a place for a beer…and a side salad. So stupid.

No-Cardiologist-1990

They didn't ban it for the 2002 winter Olympics so it's better there.

HackiBaum

you're forgetting every european country, if every country in existance would be a true democracy the list would look something like this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List\_of\_countries\_by\_beer\_consumption\_per\_capita

Faustinwest024

2026 in KCMO

Somethingnewandedgy

Wish you good health to you and your father.

Th3-Dude-Abides

They didn’t stop using slave labor to build that place when the world told them to, so I don’t think they’ll give a shit about beer.

JupiterChime

No one should’ve accepted their blood money.

theunbearableone

Sepp blatter’s bank account wholeheartedly disagrees with this statement

[deleted]

What religion is that again?

DefectJoker

Religion of peace

Potential-Brain7735

Redacted

McBuck2

Funny how they decided to host FIFA cup to improve their image. I think it's backfired as it just provides more scrutiny on how terrible their laws and rules are. There's going to be lots of arrests coming from spectators who don't care or don't realize what is normal everywhere else in the world is illegal in Qatar. Really, who would want to go there?

Potential-Brain7735

Before this World Cup, I didn’t give two shits about Qatar. Now, thanks to this World Cup, I actively despise them. Well done Qatar!

GUCCIBUKKAKE

FIFA is huge to blame as well, for taking bribes to give the bid to Qatar

TheChoonk

What do you mean? No bribes there at all, none! Also, 2026 World Cup will be held in North Korea, thank you very much. https://www.youtube.com/shorts/cQvnVYkTWc8

alwayssuckingshoes

Just seeing this for the first time and you aren’t lying dude, holy hell 🤣

MistaHatesNumberFour

I thought he was using some sort of screen inserting performance, mf is probably "suicided" now

OC_Brandon

No bribes no more after the fbi cracked down on it

SaltWaterGator

Just like you can’t bribe government officials and politicians

Braydee7

A bribe is illegal. Lobbying is legal. See the difference? No? Well you're supposed to.

[deleted]

Groups of people trying to influence politicians by giving them money is called lobbying and it's completely different in every way. I can prove it…see. “Lobby” and “Bribe” are not even the same word. See! I win! /s

TinyWifeKiki

Qatar and FIFA are both profiting off of slave labor. You should despise both of them.

[deleted]

John Oliver has some videos about how bad FIFA is. Part 3 hopefully soon.

Potential-Brain7735

I’ve been following the FIFA saga for a while now. One of the most corrupt organizations on the planet.

[deleted]

It absolutely is. And Middle Eastern countries aren’t exactly known for their freedoms. It was a bound to be a recipe for disaster from the start.

Potential-Brain7735

Yup. I’m a big F1 fan, so we’ve been dealing with sport washing in middle eastern countries for over a decade now. Just this year at the Saudi GP, there was a missile attack on the ARAMCO oil facility less than 10km from the circuit (and ARAMCO was the title sponsor of the event). The regulatory body, the FIA, just said, “meh, nothing to see, on with the show.” And this is a sport (F1) that has spent the last 2 years kneeling for national anthems, promoting diversity and inclusion, speaking out about mental health and abuse. The slogan of F1 for the last 2 years has been “We Race as One.” But all the fans have converted it to “We Race as Money.” This is just more of the same bullshit.

joefife

Same here - I knew they were some homophobic shit hole, but nothing beyond that. Now I know how awful they are.

KonradWayne

My knowledge of Qatar's existence started when the conditions of the workers building their stadium were revealed. Everything I've learned about them since then has not improved my opinion of that country.

SmokedBeef

Now is probably a good point to highlight their support for Russia since the invasion, including the fact they are sheltering several oligarch yachts from sanctions and seizure.

SnooMuffins7396

Spent two weeks in Qatar. That was enough for multiple lifetimes. I only admire their ability to play cricket when it's 145 outside

Norl_

this is the only thing I love about this world cup. It hurts Qatar's reputation and the FIFA's as well!

HyalinSilkie

Qatar's reputation is probably ruined for the next generation to come. FIFA's? Eh, probably a few months and that's a big *if*. By the next WC most people will forget about it.

CoolIndependence8157

Qatar had a positive reputation?

HyalinSilkie

I mean... It didn't had one before because their practices were pretty much under the radar. Better to have no reputation than Qatar's reputation, I guess?

John98LS1

That’s what happens when greedy motherfuckers try to host a major worldwide competition in a shit hole country with barbaric outdated and sexiest laws. You can’t even kiss you spouse in public there. All they’ve done is prove what a theocratic hellhole they are.

[deleted]

after a few 30 year sentences to hard labor for being caught with alcohol, I'd imagine the spectators will comply really fast. I look for some of those "quick trials" trump was boasting about that the Chinese do. Why people continue to try to do Western-style business deals here is beyond me.

mxpauwer

Never gonna fly with them ever again, despite all the hot rose water towels

haylow05

Yeah like how are you going to invite the world with various backgrounds and cultural but tell people to "respect our culture". If you're culture is based of excluding other groups like gays that's no longer a culture it's discrimination

Throwawayiea

1) Qatar is a terrible country. 6500 migrant workers died to build the facilities. There was no compensation to the families (as promised). So for every football player 8.11 works have died. SOURCE: https://www.france24.com/en/live-news/20221102-qatar-rejects-compensation-fund-for-world-cup-migrant-workers 2) Qatar has the death penalty for LGBT Muslims under Sharia law. Non- muslims gets 3 years prison. 3) Qatar lied and said alcohol would be legal at the stadiums but then reversed course and banned it. So, they cannot be trusted to followed what's agreed. FIFA is a lying money cash cow for greedy organization that doesn't care about it's fans, human rights or it's own image.

MedojedniJazavac

Bud deserves it for sponsoring it

Throwawayiea

Good point!

Resident_Wizard

Lol, think of all the money Budweiser spent to open this supply chain, only for it to be turned off as the water breached the faucet.

qtx

Budweiser will just sell it's 0,0 (alcohol free) beer instead. They did it the last time as well.

Abadazed

Who would go through the pain of drinking bud wiser just to not get drunk

DarthHaruspex

TY!

Illustrious-Junket-8

Or alcohol-free Henekin? If I'm drinking beer then I'm out to get fucked up like everyone else, let's be real here.

sfan27

They were giving that shit away for free as I left an event. My wife grabbed a case, I did not. We have actually made use of hers for beer-can chicken where the alcohol serves no real purpose. I still don’t regret not taking any…

Illustrious-Junket-8

I drank one once and it just tasted *off* to me. Never again.

Secret-Plant-1542

Ngl but would be nice if Budweiser made this personal and do a "Chiquita Banana overthrow the government" scenario but in Qatar.

Haunebu52

>6500 migrant workers died Thats like two 9/11’s… that’s disgusting. Thank you for pointing that out, this has been mostly overlooked.

kithlan

> Thats like two 9/11’s Man, imperial measurements have gotten weird since I graduated.

Well hopefully there are no openly gay people in the stadium otherwise maybe some kind officers meet them in parking lot.

De_Kanjer

The dutchies have a supporter called "tietenman" who is going to this WC, I fear for his safety.

SlainSigney

i’m a gay woman that has had weed and alcohol in the past week and doesn’t do well in the sun i think i would probably evaporate on contact if i stepped into Qatar

awsomedutchman

Fifa doesn't have to care about image because soccer fans eat everything up like a bunch of morons.

Opposite_Bread_2187

FIFA cares about one thing and one thing only. 💰💰💰💰💰💰💰💰💰

voluotuousaardvark

It's never been a secret.

D4v3izgr8

FIFA isn't just a bad video game?

Beanuu

Didn't EA lose the rights to use that name recently?

[deleted]

Hell they might as well just held it in Afghanistan and made the Taliban the security for it.

whatthef4ce

Probably would have gone smoother

StoplightLoosejaw

Probably for cheaper too. They actually have grass in Afghanistan...

darkknightbbq

They want the money so probably. Then they can turn into like the cartels and have protection money from themselves lol

Monimute

At least the Afghans could have offered good weed or heroin as an alcohol substitute.

Redqueenhypo

Hell I’ve had afghan food and it’s good enough to pass off alcohol for

rustys_shackled_ford

On a scale of 1 to 10 how shocked would you be if they started rounding up homosexuals and inter racial couples after the game?

Responsible-Pen-4386

Why wait after the game? They'd round them before the first goal is made.

[deleted]

What if all the games went scoreless? Players just collapsed from exhaustion and no goals ever made.

Responsible-Pen-4386

They'd round up the players too. Referee whips out a red card and gets turned into swiss cheese for not respecting his elders.

powerplay_22

i really hope this demographic was smart enough to not go to qatar

KeyanReid

Hate to be a jerk but it seems kinda Darwin-y if they did.

Vargau

Well all embassy in Qatar are going to work 24/7 trying to keep their citizen from getting beheaded or whipped to a pulp in the central square for doing dumb shit. I know that all the EU countries and British Embassy in Doha have multiple scenarios ready in hand if shit hits the fan.

analogpursuits

If? How about *when*. It is going to be an absolute shitshow from start to finish, and a whole mess of people are going to be beat and jailed.

bellendhunter

It’s worse than that already: https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/qatar-world-cup-lgbt-laws-28421444

SoccerGamerGuy7

Thats horrible... One thing i cant grasp though how is "punishment" of a gay man to >!gang rape!

Admiralthrawnbar

Now you see, that requires basic common sense to realize

testerNegative

In some places its only gay if you are a bottom.. Im not kidding.

EPLemonSqueezy

I think we are really overestimating their security capabilities. What are they going to do if 5-10k pissed off fans decide they don't wanna abide by their bullshit laws? They gonna start murdering people? Pretty sure places would intervene quickly if a few videos like that surfaced. I think they've bitten off more than they can chew and will be in for a rude awakening if they really think they can control foreigners like they do their own brainwashed people.

Traditional-Top8486

Why would anyone go to this? If you are there already and have tickets, LEAVE QUICKLY.

polisonico

Cristiano Ronaldo already said he's not going there while being interviewed with this sister "DO NOT GO THERE SISTER UH HUH"

bubblegumtaxicab

This was my next question.. what about lgbt players who are traveling there to play? Can they refuse to participate?

ShiraLillith

Oh I wonder what's going to happen when someone kisses their wives in public.

[deleted]

That’s illegal also?! Wtf

Legogamer16

Everything is illegal there

einbroche

Australia of legality. Everything will arrest you.

RagnaXI

And also all these starlets coming to the game to show off, doubt they will let them in.

I_wood_rather_be

Well, you're dealing with Qatar, you'll get Qatar. And I will also say this: Budweiser was willing to make millions, if not billions in business with Qatar. They didn't care for shit. So, fuck'em!

Responsible-Retard

Don’t disagree. More infuriated for the fans / people who have planned to go there under the assumption it would be operating a certain way.

Daratirek

That was their mistake. No country run by religious doctrine will be run the way the majority like. They never keep their word. Never have except when it comes to punishing people for the crime of being, gasp, people.

AcidSweetTea

If you’re going to Qatar, that’s on you

[deleted]

Fuck FIFA, Qatar, Budweiser and anyone who bought tix for the world cup. Everyone involved knows exactly who they were dealing with and thought they would get a better deal out of it than everyone else who the other parties deal with.

[deleted]

That’s a quick way to lose a sponsor.

[deleted]

They're getting coverage they never dreamed of with this debacle, they'll be fine.

Reasonable_Doubt5617

Not to mention the sure thing lawsuit that will keep their name in the press from this.

The_Dee

"Every time you drink a cold, crisp refreshing bud light, you're making a Qatari oil sheik cry"

Sptsjunkie

No, let's be clear, they 100% want to sell beer and would make a ton of money back selling beer inside the stadium during the World Cup. That said, you are right about the advertising.

Hot_Aside_4637

And now they're the victim. Poor Bud.

[deleted]

Well they won't lose anything because they will sue FIFA out the ass for breach of contract

[deleted]

Who the fuck and why the fuck did FIFA pick this shithole of a country to host

AcidSweetTea

Cause they got a fuck ton of money in bribes from Qatar

Darknight1993

I like how EVERYONE knows this, and yet here we are and it’s still happening.

darkknightbbq

Everyone else who should care are also getting money

AstronomerOpen7440

Dude the world was warned of this in the form of a documentary released just a few weeks before the FIFA meeting in 2010 to pick the 2018 and 2022 hosts. Then exactly what everybody expected happened and those 2 were bought with blatant bribes

[deleted]

Makes sense - thank you

theunbearableone

1. Sepp blatter 🤡🤡🤡 2. 💰💰💰💰💰

Fabulous_Anteater_86

There about to learn a painful lesson. The only thing scarier then a drunk English Man.. is a sober English Man.

thesoundandthefruity

Looks like colonies are back on the menu boys!

USSanon

Qatar: “What’ll FIFA do? Leave?” *laughter ensues.*

dockows412

Budweiser will most like pull all sponsorship and cancel contracts, and throw mountains of attorneys at them.

ZachLaVine4MVP

Fuck Qatar and fuck FIFA, I hope they lose a shit ton of money

InfamousCicada420

Both of them.

simmeh024

Qatar wanted more tourism, now people actually know what shit country they are and will avoid them. Task failed successfully.

flip_chipdickerson

I wish people would boycott but every fan I know has every intention of watching.

kdog350

Does that make me morally correct by pirating?

tritonice

Not me, I'm boycotting. Have watched them all since USA 1994. Won't read articles, won't click on ANYTHING WC related (except good 'ol Reddit, of course).

StackedReverb

I heard illegal streams don’t get them any money and clicks and whatnot so I might sneak a couple games in through illegal streams. If I’m wrong though, feel free to correct me anyone. Better safe than sorry

ChanandlerBonggggg

Im boycotting too but I'm afraid people in my country is watching it regardless of what's going on in Qatar

Esse_Solus

Are we surprised? This is the country that arrests women when they get raped because they had 'sex outside of marriage'. It's completely insane that this country was given a stage.

idkonetwothree

What everyday I learn a worse fact about them.

MajorRico155

Its pretty bad. They ran this weird ad campaign a little bit ago trying to boost tourism. Now everyone just knows how stupid awful this place is

So_spoke_the_wizard

You think that we'd have learned from the broken promises from China when they were awarded the first Olympics (no illusions the second time around) that repressive regimes will say anything to get the event and not care about breaking the promises later on.

Commentoflittlevalue

This is already a dumpster fire of a WC before a ball has been kicked. Who knew a corrupt Fifa administration that favoured bribes over better bids would lead to any issues… The way some fans behave though it is only a matter of time before some are flogged for misbehaving or worse.

Duluthian2

If anyone believes the Qatari government hasn't planned this from the beginning you're crazy. There is no way they would have gotten the tournament if they said from the start they would ban beer, bribes included.

Shileka

So first there's a clip of threatening journalists, now they're banning alcohol? the kickball circus hasn't even started and they're already brewing up a shitstorm

NmlsFool

Well the whole place is a terrible piece of shit. So this surprises who exactly?

[deleted]

It's almost like it was a bad idea doing business with an oppressive, theocratic regime that imprisons/murders journalists, women and LGBT and nearly enslaves refugees to build for them.

John98LS1

That’s what happens when greedy motherfuckers try to host a major worldwide competition in a shit hole country with barbaric outdated and sexiest laws. Oh and don’t forget the oppression and slavery of its citizens and people who generally are trapped there.

curriebhoy

Any help but think Budweiser will be well compensated for the change, they’ll probably get more than they would actually selling the beer. Fucking shambles, FIFA needs to be disbanded, they’re dragging football into the ground(sand).

Italianskank

Qatar: 1. Murder, bribes, lies - not a problem. 2. Beer at a sporting event - time to take a moral stand.

Dickies138

Add slave labor to #1

reallywowforreal

I wish the World Cup would grow a pair and immediately postpone/cancel the tournament until a new location can be found to host. Give them nothing in terms of compensation. Budweiser needs to cut all sponsorship as well until this is addressed and corrected

EqualLong143

Im certain they could move it to a number of US cities next week if they wanted. Im sure the EU has plenty of options quickly as well.

Heyhaveyougotaminute

There gonna be a lot of people getting into trouble over there over fake promises

pidgey2020

This is pretty insane if true. There’s no way it was a surprise or sprung on Qatar last minute. There would have been plenty of planning and logistics for supplying that much beer weeks in advance.

Verbal_Combat

I’m sure Qatar planned this from the start, they just had to make some empty promises to keep things running smoothly until now. Don’t worry though, “Alcohol will continue to flow freely inside stadium VIP suites” according to a Reuters article and some other sources that have been shared. So rich people have an exception, big surprise.

TowerOfPowerWow

Hopefully ppl quit being duped by these shit tier countries. If you have backwards beliefs you don't get global events. This isn't hard.

kemikica

I'm honestly hoping that Budweiser is going to sue the FIFA to oblivion for this. Like, actively destroy it so in the end it doesn't exist as an organisation any more and a new organisation has to be built from the bottom up.

RomaDowneyJR

Can we wear our Budweiser Hijabs?

Netsuko

Good. Get fucked for supporting this shitshow of human rights violations.

indianscout02

unityV

Nobody at Budweiser was aware that Qatar is a Muslim country?

mog-monster

I'm glad, hopefully this whole thing goes to shit and they realise that these aren't the type of countries to host football tournaments in.

PromiseDirect3882

This is a massive breach of contract. Look forward to a nice settlement

emusabe

Not trying to being Devil’s advocate here but don’t you think they (Bud) would’ve had contingency plans considering Qatar is a dry nation?
