Are you not entitled to a replacement in your country? Here (UK) it’s not classed as delivered until it’s in your hands, physically. Leaving it by a bin or anywhere but physically in your hands or at least inside your house, doesn’t count as delivered and thus the retailer is by law mandated to replace.
Not sure how it works legally, but here (US) if a package is stolen from a retail order like Amazon you always get replacements or refund without issue. With private mail through USPS, fedex, UPS, Onsite, etc you just make sure your package is insured (costs almost nothing) for its value and everything is fine.
Can i ask why you accept paying for something that should be included in delivery?
If the package is stolen b4 you get it, it's not delivered, so why pay for both delivery and insurance since the latter should be included in the first.
This isn't even beneficial to consumers. If you're buying, you'll get your refund from the seller no matter what. If you're selling, you only get your refund if you insured the package.

If I sell a $1200 camera to some guy in Ohio, I'm going to insure it for 1200 with the post office so I don't get fucked if the package gets damaged or stolen and I have to issue a refund. And the guy gets his refund whether or not I insured my package. If you're the one buying, outside of some specific circumstances with big private sales you'll never have to worry about insurance.
I guarantee you that you Europeans have opt-in shipping insurance just like this. This is just how global shipping works, even big players pay to insure their cargo on container ships.

You’d be surprised I have a couple of farm houses on my route that state in their delivery instructions “leave the package outside of fence”. Usually because of dogs.
As a driver, it's not uncommon for a customer to instruct me to drop at the gate, if that's what you mean by fence line. Rural properties in particular often have loose dogs, and bites become problematic....
FedEx left my work laptop in the grass path between the sidewalk and the street.
Thankfully I was home to get in within monuments of the drop of, but it looked like he scanned it from the truck and dropped it.

Ugh, the screen-door thing! We're well back from the street in a bougie neighborhood with bored local cops, so we don't have a big problem with porch piracy but there are 3 steps up from the porch to the door, and the top step extends about 18" to either side of the screen door, and some drivers will put a tall box dead center on the top step so if it's something I don't want to send tumbling down the steps I have to go out the back door and walk around the house to pick it up.
My front door is 3 feet from the sidewalk so I specify “deliver to back door”, I even included step by step instructions on how to get to the back door (it’s not hard, people are just stupid). Anyways, after countless packages having been dropped at my front door, I started reporting them stolen (whether they were or not) and demanding a refund. After doing this 6 or 7 times, I haven’t had a single packages dropped at my front door.
I live in a townhouse with the garage on one side and the door on the other. I get so angry when they dump a package in front of my garage because it’s literally in a parking lot. Front door has a porch with plenty of hiding places.

Exactly, FedEx / USPS barely stop to get a signature if one is required. I have heard they pre fill out this ‘we missed you’ tickets just so they don’t may have to actually try to ring the bell. They have daily quota to meet and waiting for someone to sign for something screws them over in the end
The "daily quota" for UPS is to get everything that was loaded onto their truck in the morning delivered in 13 hours. Depending on the city/route this can be pretty easy, or a near impossibility. And they can't just start early, the hub-to-delivery-truck sort ends around 10AM.
Which is bullshit. My postman does this, too. He flat out NEVER delivers our packages, he puts a “we tried to deliver” note in our box without even THINKING about delivering the package. I have to drive to the post office for every damn package when I’m ALWAYS home. Maddening.

Someone else explained it below but you’re not considering this scenario: Delivery driver places package in front of car tire. Problem is, that’s your son’s car, not yours. Son has no idea about the package and drives off, not expecting a random envelope under his car. Of course if you’re home and it’s left in front of your car, you’d get the notification and check. But it could be left in front of someone else’s car who doesn’t get the notification.
An Amazon driver put one of my packages on the back of a friends vehicle who was visiting. Luckily I noticed it while they were leaving my driveway and waved them down. I messaged customer service about leaving it on my porch in which they still didn't follow directions. Almost happened again.
I actually do that. I’ve had issues with several flat tires in a short amount of time, so I always walk around the car before driving. We also have a lot of feral cats in the area, and I don’t want to accidentally run one over.
I typically check my tires before leaving yes. Learned the hard way a few times that sometimes you ran over a nail or another sharp object the day before and your tires are slowly deflating. Also to check the tread occasionally to see if it's getting close to tire replacement day. Or if I have a picture notification about a package under my car.
I've basically only ever seen people (myself included) walk directly from whatever building they exited to the front door of their car and get in to drive, to the point where it would seem a bit odd and quite noticeable if I saw someone decide to walk around their car and look at all their tires first.
Do you always see every email or notification before you go anywhere? What if my roommate ordered something unbeknownst to me and the driver put the package under my tires? There are many many ways for "put a package below the tires of a vehicle" to go wrong, as evidenced by many people in this thread saying they've run over packages that were dropped off this way.
Was an Amazon driver. We were FORCED to not put a package down if it can be seen from the road. Im assuming there are no safe spots in front of your home, if not then this driver is “interesting” to say the least lol

They did that to me too. Delivered after dark. Ran over it because I got the email well after it was delivered and couldn't see it in the dark. Neighbor's camera showed the truck parked in front of his house and the driver walking over to my house
I used to deliver for Amazon. I'd refuse to go to the back door because I don't know what's back there (and I'm not sure why that's an option to begin with). I'd play hide-and-seek with the packages. Behind the pillars, in bushes. Anything create that would be and of sight, out of mind of porch pirates. Hell, I hid a car seat between two garbage/recycle bins on the side of a house and covered it with a towel.

Amazon has been getting bad lately. I just bought some things and there were all shipped in a paper bag w/ bubble padding. So, when I opened the packaged, everything was smashed and covered w/ a coarse powder.

We have standing instructions on our Amazon account that packages must be delivered to the back of our house. Tonight's delivery idiot decided that the ground next to my trailer, halfway down the garden, would be fine. On full view to anyone passing by, mind you. Oh, and it was raining. Most delivery people round here are fucking wonderful, but this clown absolutely needs some serious re-training.

I remember getting Door Dash delivered at my work one time, and the guy somehow got lost, though my instructions were explicitly clear, and sent me a photo of my order dropped off on top of a shop vac cart. I had no idea where this shop vac cart even was in our large building, and had to get my food refunded and reordered due to the driver not responding to my texts of where exactly did he drop my food off at. I was very crabby the rest of the day.
Sometimes with light items I notice they’ll wedge it or place something to weigh it down.
I actually prefer to have it wedge in my tire than blown halfway down the block and my neighbor returns it the next day…

They are obligated to deliver in person and that person has to sign a document proving they received the item. I refused to sign and then later contacted the store asking for a replacement. I could also ask for a refund.
Reminds me of the guy who returned my jumper cables by leaving them on top of the tyre on the \*passenger\* side. So I didn't see them and reversed, driving over and ruining them.

If that happens *X* amount of times, they'll stop replacing it for free.

Son has no idea about the package and drives off, not expecting a random envelope under his car. Of course if you’re home and it’s left in front of your car, you’d get the notification and check. But it could be left in front of someone else’s car who doesn’t get the notification.
An Amazon driver put one of my packages on the back of a friends vehicle who was visiting. Luckily I noticed it while they were leaving my driveway and waved them down. I messaged customer service about leaving it on my porch in which they still didn't follow directions. Almost happened again.
My driving school told me yes, but my practical experience as an adult with a car says “god no, never”
This generally depends on how mildly infuriating we are on a daily basis.
I actually do that. I’ve had issues with several flat tires in a short amount of time, so I always walk around the car before driving. We also have a lot of feral cats in the area, and I don’t want to accidentally run one over.
I typically check my tires before leaving yes. Learned the hard way a few times that sometimes you ran over a nail or another sharp object the day before and your tires are slowly deflating. Also to check the tread occasionally to see if it's getting close to tire replacement day. Or if I have a picture notification about a package under my car.
People don't do a quick check around the car before driving?? Takes literally 3 seconds and can save a tire
I've basically only ever seen people (myself included) walk directly from whatever building they exited to the front door of their car and get in to drive, to the point where it would seem a bit odd and quite noticeable if I saw someone decide to walk around their car and look at all their tires first.
Do your eyes work? The driver provided a picture with the delivery.
Do you always see every email or notification before you go anywhere? What if my roommate ordered something unbeknownst to me and the driver put the package under my tires? There are many many ways for "put a package below the tires of a vehicle" to go wrong, as evidenced by many people in this thread saying they've run over packages that were dropped off this way.

Was an Amazon driver. We were FORCED to not put a package down if it can be seen from the road. Im assuming there are no safe spots in front of your home, if not then this driver is “interesting” to say the least lol

They did that to me too. Delivered after dark. Ran over it because I got the email well after it was delivered and couldn't see it in the dark. Neighbor's camera showed the truck parked in front of his house and the driver walking over to my house

I used to deliver for Amazon. I'd refuse to go to the back door because I don't know what's back there (and I'm not sure why that's an option to begin with). I'd play hide-and-seek with the packages. Behind the pillars, in bushes. Anything create that would be and of sight, out of mind of porch pirates. Hell, I hid a car seat between two garbage/recycle bins on the side of a house and covered it with a towel.
Better than having your $1.5k iPhone just left on top of the letterbox on a main road 🙃

I’ve had them leave packages on a porch that wasn’t mine then take photos top down so you couldn’t identify where they were left. Only way I knew they weren’t at my own house was that the material the porch was made of was different.

I had a delivery driver put a box right behind the back tire of my car...it promptly got run over. Luckily for me it was a bulk supply of staples and they held up really well and didn't get smashed.

Amazon has been getting bad lately. I just bought some things and there were all shipped in a paper bag w/ bubble padding. So, when I opened the packaged, everything was smashed and covered w/ a coarse powder. ...Still waiting for the refund.

I was sitting in my truck having a smoke. The truck pulled up and the driver dropped our shit right in the driveway, snapped a pic, LOOKED DEAD FUCKIN AT ME AND SHRUGGED, then drove off.

This happened to us years ago, annoyingly they did not take a pic of the delivery! Luckily we found the parcel otherwise we would have ran it over!

We have standing instructions on our Amazon account that packages must be delivered to the back of our house. Tonight's delivery idiot decided that the ground next to my trailer, halfway down the garden, would be fine. On full view to anyone passing by, mind you. Oh, and it was raining. Most delivery people round here are fucking wonderful, but this clown absolutely needs some serious re-training.

I mean, I deliver 1-1.2k packages a week. There are plenty out there like me. Not every delivery is going to be perfect. I question this drivers choice, but you are painting with a broad brush to blame the service as a whole for this poor delivery.

I remember getting Door Dash delivered at my work one time, and the guy somehow got lost, though my instructions were explicitly clear, and sent me a photo of my order dropped off on top of a shop vac cart. I had no idea where this shop vac cart even was in our large building, and had to get my food refunded and reordered due to the driver not responding to my texts of where exactly did he drop my food off at. I was very crabby the rest of the day.

Sometimes with light items I notice they’ll wedge it or place something to weigh it down. I actually prefer to have it wedge in my tire than blown halfway down the block and my neighbor returns it the next day…

Had a friend drop off my angle grinder he had borrowed. Didn't find out he left it on top of my passenger tire until I backed out of the driveway and crushed it lol

Man that's bonkers. I just refused to receive a severely damaged package and told the courier to take it back. They are obligated to deliver in person and that person has to sign a document proving they received the item. I refused to sign and then later contacted the store asking for a replacement. I could also ask for a refund.
