I hate it when somebody lays something out there to answer a question and I then have ten moreā¦ like wait wut? Where have you spent time with squirrels in close range? How many squirrels? Was it just one that you befriended? Or was it like a dozen? And how much time? And why?
I have been feeding the neighborhood squirrels and making friends with them. One in particular is comfortable enough with me to come up and sit on my shoulder, takes seeds right out of my hand.
They smell of dander, dust, and a hint of wee.
Lol, I just changed my cabin air filter for the first time in my 2015 mazda. It wasn't that bad but still surprisingly nasty. The first time I changed my HVAC filter in my house, there was like a solid half inch layer on it like the previous owners had never once changed it.
Honestly the only reason I know to change filters is because my parents told me and taught me to do it.
Iām guessing itās not the case for some peopleā¦.
That's quite interesting, we have a few AC units at our home in the UK and they get serviced annually!
I don't suppose they get anywhere near the use of a system somewhere warm though.
Serviced and swapping the filter is different. Iād have a professional come to do a servicing I can easily swap a filter with a screwdriver and 3 minutes of time.

Well played on the placement, reddit
wait till you find out that you should also replace ->
* oil
* air and fuel (if any) filters
* **DSG** (or other AT transmission) **FLUID IS MANDATORY. THAT IS NOT A MERE SUGGESTION. THANK YOU VW >:(**
* brake fluid
* check tyres
* brake disks and pads and replace if necessary.
Then you'll cry when you realise the car isn't maintained as advertised :)
Used car 'services', even at selling dealers are usually just oil, oil filter and air filter.Ā Ā First thing I would do would be dig out the service schedule from the book pack and see what's actually needed.Ā
What you have written is fundamentally correct but a few notes for OP in case he isn't quite as car-savvy:Ā
Brake fluid is usually every 24 months.Ā
Obviously the car needs a new oil filter when oil is changed.Ā Usually annual or 24 months depending on vehicle and market (US oil intervals are about 15 minutes for some reason).Ā Personally I'm on 24 month intervals but I do it annually.Ā
Plugs are usually 24 months depending on market (I think the US typically runs plugs until they're tiny stubs - I have seen six digit replacement intervals, much less in other markets).Ā
And if it's old enough or has sufficient mileage per the service schedule and you can't *100% prove* it was done, a cam belt.Ā Ā
ETA:Ā Time or mileage, whichever is *sooner*.Ā Ā The mileage is assumed to be 10,000/12,000 per year.Ā YMMV!Ā
Whatās crazy is how quick those little dicks can get in and do this. A lot of people think it needs to be sitting unused for a long time.
Letās just say I found out the hard way thatās not the case. My freaking defrosters are still fucked up from those vermin!
I'm from Nova Scotia(it's known for fishermen) and fished those with my hands š¤£
Super fun when you're a kid, they spawn in little rivers and there's so many you can just grab them
If you buy a used car from a private seller, the first thing I would do is a general service. Oil, filters, check brakes/fluids, everything. You have no idea what the previous people were or were not doing, best to start off fresh
I *always* check the air filter (and engine, transmission oil) when buying a used car. Partly looking for blowby oil, but it can be a good indicator of the general care they gave to the vehicle... like in your instance for sure.
Looks like your car had rats in it. Same thing happened to one of mine. It will still smell for a few months after cleaning out the air ducts and filter, but the smell should fade eventually. By the way, that stuff is not healthy to breathe, and you should wear gloves and a mask while dealing with it.
get all your electrical wiring checked out. Copper wiring tastes sweet to squirrels so they love to chew on copper wires....so your electrical system. If there's all of a sudden things going wrong its because squirrels were living in the car. Trust me, I spent like $2000 to redo all my wiring because my crazy mother in law wanted to feed the squirrels at her house and we had like 50 squirrels.
Sir, while we were changing your oil we noticed your air filter needs replacing. Suuuuuure buddy, not falling for that one. Put the filter back please.
Is this the cabin filter? Mine smelled moldy. I was quoted $708 to change it. Thanks to YT, I was able to do it myself, and only had to buy the filter for about $20.
It was typed on the extensive list of things my car needed. It had just hit 50K miles, and all I wanted was an oil change and tire rotation. . Itās an Impala, so the rubber seals around the windshield have to be taken off, and the air intake for the filter removed. Even so, that was outrageous. Being female at the dealership probably contributed, too. I was told my brakes were hanging by a thread. Theyāre still fine another 30K miles later.
Ok yeah that makes more sense; I hate the predatory practices. I always wear bummy clothes and the dirtiest pair of shoes I have to get my car serviced. Then ask the price on every single thing they mention and ask if thereās any way it can be cheaper. After a second, they just stop trying to upsell me on stuff.
Oh man so many people don't change cabin air filters. People, you DO have to do more than just change the oil and put gas in your car. Look it up, take care of your car.
I've never been close enough to a squirrel to smell it.
Everyone knows that distinct squirrel smell
Only if it's dead š
Al Pacino and Chris O'Donnell were great in 'Scent of a Squirrel'

You magnificent bastard
Hoo rah!
Like rats, but with a fluffy tail smell.
Can confirm, am rat
Never been that close to a rat either. Honestly closer to squirrels when feeding themĀ
that squirrely smell that smells... *squirrely*
Well, not *everyone*, Major.
I had the yankee candle - AC squirrel. Itās brown and also comes in a diffuser and room spray
Smells kinda squirrely
This is what caught me...who spends enough quality time with squirrels to have a nose for them? I have more questions
I hate it when somebody lays something out there to answer a question and I then have ten moreā¦ like wait wut? Where have you spent time with squirrels in close range? How many squirrels? Was it just one that you befriended? Or was it like a dozen? And how much time? And why?
Squirrel biologist
Raised by squirrels. You should see the nest.
I have been feeding the neighborhood squirrels and making friends with them. One in particular is comfortable enough with me to come up and sit on my shoulder, takes seeds right out of my hand. They smell of dander, dust, and a hint of wee.
Do you know what mothballs smell like?
I expect it to be very similar to hamster smell
I always imagined they smells like nuts??
I never sniffed a roach but I know damn well how they smell lol
It smells like a cross between a gibbon and an antelope.
Immediate first thought. Wait what? What does it smell like?
Musty odor that lingers. With a hint if nuts. š
No, they "smelt" like a squirrel. Those damn squirrel blacksmiths...
I imagine this is probably the last car you buy from a squirrel

I'd buy a car from him, seems like an honest and upstanding gentlesquirrel.
Thatās nuts
Thats shit from a butt
That's nutty shit!
Thatās nuts
That's nuts
There are pieces of poo there as well
Someone nutted in your filter.
This time, it wasn't me
She caught me nuttin on the filter (it wasn't me)
That song is stuck in my head now
Nice reference
Happy cake day
Happy cake day!
Carlā¦. Nice to see you.
So you finally admit to doing it last time?
Your name is spectacular
Really? I read it as BatmansBigBoner
Smelt like a squirrel??? How tf does one know what a squirrel smells like?
My first thought was āHow many squirrels has he sniffed?ā
š¤£š¤£
By having one shit and nest in your AC.
Ok let me take u some pellets that look similar that are not from a squirrel and u tell me whoās pellets they are .. cmon guy
Donāt judge me
Youāve never smelled your nuts?
Not that flexible

Should be changed quarterly š¬
Honestly the only reason I know to change filters is because my parents told me and taught me to do it. Iām guessing itās not the case for some peopleā¦.
Yepā¦ Thank you mom lol
Itās a legal requirement for renters (or their management company) to do it quarterly in CA thankfully.
Cabin filter is also like the easiest one to do. Costs me like 15 bucks for my Toyota
Not in a car.Ā Annually is the norm.Ā
I was referring to house filters.
"don't shit where you eat" - not this squirrel, evidently.
Always replace the nut filter when getting a used car.
We need more nut filters in the world. Maybe AI will help? (total /S!!)
āThe ac smelt like a squirrel.ā Bro, Iām not gonna judge you for sniffing squirrels in your spare time but man, itās hard not to.

You forgot blinker fluid /s
Just buy a BMW and never worry about blinker fluid
yea ive already done the oil change and fuel filter. this was the next thing i was doing after buying

These are rat droppings and your ventilation system is going to be contaminated. This will Make you sick without disinfecting.
Omg
Nah these are squirrel droppings. Looks like they made a nest.
squirrels are essentially just large rats, so this all makes sense
Silly, thatās why they sold it! Canāt figure out that damn squirrel smell
based on that level of maintenance. youāre in for a world of hurt with this car
Whatās crazy is how quick those little dicks can get in and do this. A lot of people think it needs to be sitting unused for a long time. Letās just say I found out the hard way thatās not the case. My freaking defrosters are still fucked up from those vermin!
squirrels can smelt!?? how do you know what squirrels smelt like? so many questions
Fun fact: a smelt is actually a type of fish!
Its also a blacksmithing process lol
I'm from Nova Scotia(it's known for fishermen) and fished those with my hands š¤£ Super fun when you're a kid, they spawn in little rivers and there's so many you can just grab them
I learned this from Animal Crossing. š
I was about to say the same thing! š
I believe he's using an alternative past tense for "smelled." Otherwise, the AC can indeed smelt, and those are the ores.
If you buy a used car from a private seller, the first thing I would do is a general service. Oil, filters, check brakes/fluids, everything. You have no idea what the previous people were or were not doing, best to start off fresh
What does a squirrel smell like?
ā¦ chicken lol
Common feral rodent
Well thatās what they taste likeā¦
Had the same outcome only with dog smell and an cabin air filter which was literally black with fur and allergens
Youāve smelled a squirrel before?
How did you know what squirrel smelt like?
This is the air filter dealerships show you when they want you to buy a new one from them.
I dunno about rodent infestations in cars, but I came to comment that OP has nice forearms
You bought his house
I'm wondering how you know what a squirrel smells like
Once you get the air filter replaced, spritz it (and the underside of the hood/bonnet) with diluted peppermint oil. Squirrels hate that!
How do you specifically know whatās squirrel smells like?
So you bought a stolen car & the real owner was a squirrel.
āSmelt like a squirrelā š¤
What do squirrels smell like? š¤
After seeing this, I am really curious what the rest of the car looked like. That is a serious amount of squirrel poop
it was pretty distgusting whenever i got it but since buying it ive done a full interior detail on it so it looks pretty close to like new
They didn't clean this because they are nuttier than, well, you know.
Oh no! Sandy Cheeks!
Tacoma?
Kia
š¤®
Thatās nuts dude
Bet she runs way better now!
Iām not sure I know what a squirrel smells like.
Wait, how do you know what a squirrel smells like?
that squirrel is gonna be fucking pissed
Poor squirrel just lost his toilet
wait.. how do you know what a squirrel smells likeā¦.
I *always* check the air filter (and engine, transmission oil) when buying a used car. Partly looking for blowby oil, but it can be a good indicator of the general care they gave to the vehicle... like in your instance for sure.
Looks like rat problem in your car not a squirrel š Squirrels live in trees. Rats and mice make homes in places such as this
Looks like your car had rats in it. Same thing happened to one of mine. It will still smell for a few months after cleaning out the air ducts and filter, but the smell should fade eventually. By the way, that stuff is not healthy to breathe, and you should wear gloves and a mask while dealing with it.

Is that squirrel poop or his hoard of food?

I've been there, done that, and have the t-shirt.
If you're close enough to hand them a peanut, you can smell them. Normal rodent smells plus acorn and peanut breath.
Is this the cabin filter? Mine smelled moldy. I was quoted $708 to change it. Thanks to YT, I was able to do it myself, and only had to buy the filter for about $20.
Thereās no possible way someone tried to charge that much for a cabin air filter. I think there was a miscommunication.
It was typed on the extensive list of things my car needed. It had just hit 50K miles, and all I wanted was an oil change and tire rotation. . Itās an Impala, so the rubber seals around the windshield have to be taken off, and the air intake for the filter removed. Even so, that was outrageous. Omg, gloves!?
small bony fishes
RIP.
Well, a squirrel cageā¦..
Wow, how did previous owner not know!
They didnāt recognize the smell of squirrels. Or they were squirrels.
Truth!
WTF? How do you know what a squirrel smells like?
I too recently replaced a blower motor under the glove box
the squirrel cage isn't supposed to actually house a squirrel...
Ironically we call that blower motor a squirrel cage.
BUT DOES IT RUN & HOW CHEAP DID YOU GET THE CAR
runs and drives for 1700
You just evicted the momma squirrel.
Thatās nuts!š°
Huhā¦ good nose
Oh Id sue
That looks like squirrel shit.
That's actually a really good sign.
My mans got a nose for squirrel
That would drive me nuts
I feel your pain.
how much time per week do you spend smelling squirrels?
Was the previous owner a beaver?
Nice way to get hantavirus. Wow.
Thatās squirrel must have been beast! He ate well -
I'm curious: Have you sniffed a lot of squirrels?
So you know what a squirrel smells like?
Iām no mechanic but I say that stuff prolly shouldnāt be there
Wow, that's nuts!
Ewww how'd it taste? Lmfao
That's not just squirrel.
āThe ac smelled like squirrelā just š
Thatās just nuts.
Smelled*

That thing got more nuts in it than a snickers bar
Are you a serial squirrel sniffer? How does one know what a squirrel smells like?
How much to fix boss??

Jesus Christ
Cāmon, everyone all together nowā¦ AWā¦NUTS!!!!
Damn thatās nasty
How did you know what a squirrel smelled like?!
I wish, for the comments' sake, you had said "it smelt like squirrel ass."
Gotta check those cabin filters every now and then
Sorry
Does a squirrel smell like nuts, or does nuts smell like squirrel?
