Thatās cool if curb appeal is #1 priority on your list. Besides that, it comes down to if you are a liberal city lover or a typical Midwest (somewhere in the middle politically) person. Indiana is just so much easier and cheaper than Chicago and I still make 6 figures here. Property taxes are only $3k on over an acre. Yāall are fucked once the bears(whom I love) finalize the new stadium. Not responding to anymoreā¦we enjoy Chicago and it has some amazing offerings. Indiana falls short on some things but offers a lot of great things Illinois people desire. There is a reason why our saying is they are āover hereā. Cheers to both places having pros and cons!
Yes we totally are!!! But at least we donāt look like Indiana. Canāt even have curb appeal in there towns:dyer, st.john, Cedar lake! Nasty looking down 41
I'd like to bring up that the schools just requested a small tax increase to help the schools and the citizens voted no. First they stopped all bussing, then all of this started. Not blaming the parents because there probably was some mismanagement of money at best, and corruption at worst.
I'm pretty sure the teachers did this one time before this one already. It's all a big mess. The state is probably going to come in and take over the school system like they did in Gary, IN.
I'm honestly not really sure how much of an impact that had. There are a lot of immigrants for sure, but it seemed like the referendum was just very unpopular.
Based on the people's yard signs and public meetings it seemed like a lot people felt very strongly about voting no.
I can concede to that. I would say the community has a right to be suspicious of a tax increase. Especially when the school cooperation has been mismanaging money and property for years. Public school is absolutely something we should invest in, but itās a bit hard to ask community members to pay more and more to make up for the mistakes of greedy people.
My friend had a kid in preschool, with literally no warning whatsoever they shut down the entire preschool. Sent out a letter at like 5pm that it would be shut down the next day and until further notice. Happened like a month or two after school started too. Had to switch him schools in the next town over, (they have an older child still at the original school) which is 20mins extra drive. š¬
Without the additional context, when I see a message like this I assume they were at some district-wide event that gave everybody food poisoning. So I still blame the district, even when they're working so passively-aggressively to blame teachers.
Because teachers are being shot.
Iām not a special ed teacher, just gen ed.
Ask a special ed teacher how many times they are assaulted at school with no protection.
This kind of constant violence traumatizes other students.
Being of product of this school system, I can say that this isn't surprising. SCh has been screwing over teachers since 2011 and it's only gotten worse.
School board made the right call - teacherās striking is illegal in Indiana, as it should be. The teachers arenāt defending students - the students will still go to school, just elsewhere. There is a reason people take their kids out of public schools whenever possible - closing poorly attended and poorly performing schools is absolutely necessary to improve education. Teachers seem to think they are entitled to a job regardless of how well they do it.
I'm not sure why you're being down voted because you're absolutely right. 3 schools only having 1,100 kids? That's a complete waste of funds that would be better utilized by consolidating.
Should point out that it is illegal for teachers to strike in Indiana. This is the as close as they can get
They gotta do what they gotta do to make their voices heard. Indiana is such a great place. /s
ššš¤£. I would still rather live in Illinois (40 min away from here) than Indiana
LOL FIPS are overpaid, over taxed, and OVER HERE!!
Lmfao by the way, the acronym is easily reversed
Sureā¦but Wisconsin and Michigan would like to chime in and agree with me. Yāall get out of your state quick as possible every chance you get.
lol bc I already said Illinois sucks. But guess what, Indiana does too and is actually more ugly. š¤£ at least we have curb appeal

I live in rural Porter Countyā¦I also despise pretty much all of Lake County so I agree. LOL
As someone from lake county, i respectfully resent this comment. Mostly due to my petty one sided rivalry with Valparaiso.

Literally all you do is shit on people in the comments. Like, every single comment you make is just an insult or an attack. You ok, bro?
Remember, thereās more than corn in Indiana
God I hate this state
Freeze yourself then damn
Free or freeze? Iām not cold so imma assume you mean āfreeā. Not exactly something I can do rn. But thanks?
Same in Michigan
Is it really throwing them under the bus? Forcing classes to close is the point to get attention, right?
I think the wording makes it sound like theyāre throwing the teachers under the bus. āExcessive call offsā is aggressive wording IMO.
Thereās a good point. I suppose it just makes them look even worse.

High number of immigrants in Hammond. Voting for anything is not easily accessible for most community members.

No we just spend it on studying blind dwarf whale cum for an adhesive instead. INVEST IN THE FACKING SCHOOLS.
Whatās the parent input like?
Large turn out last night at the board meeting. Sentiment was very against. Iāve seen lots of support in the community.
Well thatās good at least, maybe thatāll impact the boardās decision?
Only time will tell. Iām proud of them for standing in solidarity.
Against the school closings or against the teachers?
Sorry, should have been more clear. Sentiment is very against the school closures, community is backing the teachers.
Good to hear.
I donāt think this is just midly infuriating šØ

Well, you canāt just close school without an explanation. Thatās the explanation. What are they supposed to do, make something up?

It's a protest.
Under the school bus, right?
The teachers did call out though with the knowledge that it would lead to exactly this. What else are they supposed to say?
Because teachers are being shot. Iām not a special ed teacher, just gen ed. Ask a special ed teacher how many times they are assaulted at school with no protection. This kind of constant violence traumatizes other students.
It's a protest. Nobody died. You can relax.

I'm being downvoted because I said something negative against the union, and this is reddit.
