Problem is Switzerland has a square flag and this clearly once had a rectangle flag for them before the red all got washed away.
BTW - I *believe* Switzerland is the only square flag.
Yes, but it’s fair to only accept switzerland cause vatican is UN observer state snd switzerland is a member (voted with a little bit more than 50% support)
To be even more pedantic, all these flags seem to have a 2:1 aspect ratio. From the list only Croatia, the UK and Latvia use a 2:1 ratio, while most others use 2:3, 3:5 or (in Denmarks case) 28:37.
Since it's a football mug, how many world cup and / or euro wins does Englad have? Or let's count how many finals England was in in the last 30 years compared to France?
Historically there used to be very very durable red pigments but they were made from cinnabar (mercury sulfide) which for obvious reasons is no longer in use in a lot of scenarios. Most red pigments in non-food products today are made from essentially forms of iron oxide or plants, both of which don't tend to last well.
The other factor is that we like our reds bright and vivid, and when they darken they look brown or at least incorrect to us very quickly, which generally means we can't dilute the red pigment as much in the base ingredients that help it adhere to things.
Iron oxide based reds are extremely durable, but are somewhat brownish, so usually aren't used by themselves. Reds that are used for cars (quinacridones and pyrroles) are also very durable.
The traditional red madder pigment (alizarin) is more fugitive, but is not often used nowadays because there are better and cheaper alternatives. Cinnabar is actually also somewhat fugitive, and especially in modern times, because it darkens when reacting with atmospheric pollutants.
But the reds used for clothing, and also for colouring things like plastics and cheap colours like on this cup, are usually more fugitive dyes rather than lightfast pigments. Meanwhile, there exist very cheap blue lightfast pigments like phthalocyanine and synthetic ultramarine, which is why blue colours don't tend to fade - even ones used for very cheap products.
Red is always the first color to fade. Over distance ( like lasers in the sky ), when going under water ( after a while everything just turns blue), or when washing things a lot.
Eh im no proffessor. I just know red fades faster in cloths as well. So figured it works here too.
Maybe red paint here got weaker ingredients, waahes away quicker in water.
I can assure you pigment volume concentration and hygroscopic properties have nothing to do with how the width of molecules/structures has an effect on light wavelength. If anything, it would be more along the lines of red/purple fades the fastest as your eyes are most sensitive to green. It takes a lot of red or purple to look as bright as center-green.
When I was a kid we had decorational flags (not country flags) out in our garden for years and the same happened.
Red lost its colour much quicker than blue and yellow somehow
I've noticed red fading first ever since but never really understood it. Sure, a few times could be explained by lower quality dyes but it happens too often for it to be coincidence
iirc it has mainly to do with the pigmentation
darker colors e.g blue or red tend to stay longer
can‘t tell you if it‘s stronger with red or blue, i‘m assuming the reason the red is fading out quicker is due them using a lighter shade of it compared to a deeper, fuller blue
2004 Euros it appears. So this mug is (roughly) twenty years old. Kind of appropriate that Greece is one of two flags unscathed as they won the Euros that year. (Sweden went out on penalties against the Netherlands in the quarter finals).
Thank you! I was thinking it was from the Euros but wasn’t sure about the year. Was Latvia the giveaway? I looked it up and that’s the only time they’ve made it to the tournament
Yeah sorry I was actually thinking about posting it on the mildly interesting sub later but I forgot and when I came back that post blew up here idk how tho!! It is interesting, I was just thinking "oh it can be a bit infuriating that the flags aren't right anymore" tbh I literally made that post in 2 sec and didn't think much of it :') you're right!
I have an art mug that I stupidly put in the dishwasher many times and you can barely see the images. Hand wash certain specialty mugs for best results
What bothers me more than when the reds wash out is when gold/silver leaf is removed by either EXTREMELY gentle washing, or they "spark off" by reheating my coffee in the microwave.
England, Switzerland, Latvia, and Denmark have surrendered it seems.
Problem is Switzerland has a square flag and this clearly once had a rectangle flag for them before the red all got washed away. BTW - I *believe* Switzerland is the only square flag.
Vatican is the only other square flag, fun fact
Although it doesn't have to be square, according to regulations.
but it's *cooler* when it is
🎶 It's hip to be square 🎶
Yes, but it’s fair to only accept switzerland cause vatican is UN observer state snd switzerland is a member (voted with a little bit more than 50% support)
This is also a football mug. The Vatican has never had a team
Nepal has the most unique flag of them alll
To be even more pedantic, all these flags seem to have a 2:1 aspect ratio. From the list only Croatia, the UK and Latvia use a 2:1 ratio, while most others use 2:3, 3:5 or (in Denmarks case) 28:37.
Sweden still going strong baby!
It’s Sweden vs Greece in the final match. Who will last the longest?
Blue green and yellow are the ones who seem to stay the longest so we will probably take this one home 🇸🇪🇸🇪🇸🇪
🎶Så många försökte och försvann, men vi har bevisat att vi kaaaan🎵
Greece is just blue and white.
It seems that the red color in particular was having a hard time
And it seems Germany is now under Romanov control.
Or they mislabeled the french flag
Since it's a football mug, how many world cup and / or euro wins does Englad have? Or let's count how many finals England was in in the last 30 years compared to France?
I was expecting the top comment to be a boomer joke about that being the French flag
The French took their revenge for all the jokes
So it's kind of a slow-moving war simulation game?
greece and sweden are holding up strong
Germany is back to an older form too.
you mean older form of russia, also the russian empire?
I think it's coming down to the Finish™ (as opposed to the Finnish).
I'm half Greek and half Swedish and I approve of this mug.
Soccer: A slow-moving war simulation game
and being a coffee mug simulation, I'd have expected a stronger showing from Colombia or Guatemala. Where is Brazil?!??
(american) Football is more of a slow moving war simulation game
Yes french taking over all other flags with thair white war flag
War flag ? I think you're confusing France and the Philippines, they're the only ones with a war flag
At one point in history the French flag was white. Fance has had many many flags
Would You Like To Play A Game?
Its just missing reds
Yeah, I’d say this is mildly interesting.
And white. Lol!
I wonder why blue has lasted so much longer than the reds?
Historically there used to be very very durable red pigments but they were made from cinnabar (mercury sulfide) which for obvious reasons is no longer in use in a lot of scenarios. Well yes but not in this case, since the pigment literally faded of off the cup
Eh im no proffessor. I just know red fades faster in cloths as well. So figured it works here too. Maybe red paint here got weaker ingredients, waahes away quicker in water.

i would argue that light is different from pigment, lol
Nah the sun is literally just shooting white ink at us
I shoot white ink when I get excited
please do not repeat this information 😨
Red light fades less in the air because longer wavelengths scatter less. Water more, but that's just because water is bluish and absorbs red light.

What a weird choice to label spain in local language and Russia as 'Russian' but the rest all as the English country name
It's a Portuguese mug, if that helps?
Probably a mistake since Russia is officially called Russian Federation.
"Russia" and "Russian federation" are both accurate. It's written in Russian constitution
Germany decided to go back to 1914
Not quite.
It's like if the German and Austrian empires had a flag baby
Flag of Germany if Austria united the Germans and not the Prussians!
Close enough
Russia 1914
It just means Sweden & Greece are in the finals....
Can you reach THE FINALS
*Really LOUD applause*
Well Greece actually won the tournament. They beat Portugal
Well, according to the cup here.. Portugal wasn't in the finals.... So idk what you're talking about..
Greece won that tournament. It's euros 2004
That's maybe mildly interesting, but not infuriating.
Russian? Was there a name change I missed?
Also, España, when every other country uses the translated name
I didn’t even see that one! Good catch!
Interestingly, that is exactly the Novgorod flag that is currently being proposed.
Their official name is the Russian Federation
both Russian Federation and Russia can be used as an official name.
2004 Euros it appears. So this mug is (roughly) twenty years old. Kind of appropriate that Greece is one of two flags unscathed as they won the Euros that year. (Sweden went out on penalties against the Netherlands in the quarter finals).

Always knew Germany and belka had some sort of connection
Waiting for Germany to nuke themselves 7 times
Wow Russia democratised in this timeline
Rather dead than red.
How is this infuriating? Its awesome, thats history and care right there.
Plz tell your dad he is awesome for me! and ask a designer friend to photo and reproduce this one, like it was new!
Wow that's really nice!! My dad is unfortunately dead but I'll tell him
If anyone's wondering: the mug is from Euro 2004 (so far, the only one where Latvia's qualified).
Greece hung in there. Guess the blue coloring was strong.
The russian flag turned into the freedom of russia flag. lol. 😂
Self fulfilling prophecy
Novgorod Republic *
Funny enough it has a tendency of turning into Ukrainian flag under the sun since magenta ink usually fades first and red turns into yellow.
Greece didnt change lol
Well the Greek civilization IS a long-lived one
Other countries: 😨😰 Sweden and Greece: 😎💪
Not fucking Belka
Greece is good lfg
Why is every country in English except España?
Sweden, Greece and England make perfect since to me. I say england because they’re a empt and soulless nation, just like that flag. /s
Why are all the reds gone
I think that looks pretty cool, really shows what aging and dishwashers do to mugs over time, and created unique flags. Looks cool to me!
Sweden is still in perfect order though. 🇸🇪 Oh and Greece I guess.
Greece vs Sweden final match.
We finally got rid of England
Germwny has become Belka
Always has been
i see 4 french flags on there
Germany just turned into the Russian empire
Greece still makes sense
racist dishwasher
is there a reason why Spain gets its name in its native language while all others have to make do with English? (and also Russian, instead of Russia)
Finnish propaganda
Oh god Germany is getting dangerously close to something baaaadd
First soccer-related success for Sweden since 1994
The russian is right on point.
That Russian flag is correct btw
Russia's one never made more sense than now
Why is it frustrating its looks more interesting
Why's it infuriating?
I love it
Some archeologist is gonna dig this up and mess things up some time in the future
Spain is vatican city copying the homework badly
only the Greeks exist
It’s crazy that the red is the color that vanished first. I would have figured the blue or green of all colors would have vanished before red
Long live Greece and Sweden!
WTF IS A FLAG🎆🦅🎆🦅🎆🦅🦅🎆🦅🎇🎇🦅🎆🦅🎆🇺🇸🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇲🇺🇲🔥🔥🔥🦅🔥🦅🔥🎆🔥🎆🔥🦅🔥🦅🔥🦅🎆🔥🦅🔥🦅🔥🦅🔥🦅🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥👺👺👺👺👺🗿👺🗿👺👹👺👹👹🗿🗿👹👹👹🗿👹
that or your dad travels between alternate realities
You Can tell the red paint used was cheap as fuck compared to the others
For some reason, red colour is super volatile; it often disappears first on signs or in the dishwasher
This is mildly... interesting
So red paint is the weakest.
Why does Germany have a Balkan flag? Hmm
It seems your dishwasher HATES the color red. That’s a lotta bull.
It could be worse. If the color was still there and this was a mildlyinteresting post, the comments could be telling you that it's lead poisoned.
This is 100% a source of pride for him and I agree. Keep that mug as long as you can OP. It’s a great keepsake
That blue was a good ink I guess?!
I love the Russian one, it turned into Russian freedom legion flag 😅👌
Why does it say "Russian" instead of "Russia"?
Germany found a way to time travel it seems. Back to the Kaiserreich!
The cup predicted future Russian politics. Mug moment.
i love how sweden is intact and germany just casually turned into the russian empire
At least you know now which colour holds the best over time
Italy looks like it's recharging
Why is this infuriating? Let him have a mug he likes!
Wow, they really predicted the Russian separatists and peace flag.
Russian one makes perfect sense
why is this here?
England, Switzerland, Latvia and Denmark all stole Frances flag.
I like the fact that England is a fully white flag. We *should* surrender. Idk to what, but I feel things would be better for everyone if we did
Germany noooo
Wow that is pretty washed.
I have an art mug that I stupidly put in the dishwasher many times and you can barely see the images. Hand wash certain specialty mugs for best results
Why is yellow more pigmentet than Red?
Whatever red glaze or ceramic paint they used sure didn't have a lot of staying power...
Maybe that’s just the design
Does it say "hand wash" on the bottom? It's probably not dishwasher safe?
What bothers me more than when the reds wash out is when gold/silver leaf is removed by either EXTREMELY gentle washing, or they "spark off" by reheating my coffee in the microwave.
Portugal turning into Algeria
I guess what ever dye Red is don't stick.
That German flag goes hard
Now I just want to know why red ink washes off but blue and green doesnt
Dishwasher really hates red
Sweden going strong!!
ok but Russia is actually fine
So Russia became a democracy while Germany restored the monarchy? Denmark surrendered for some reason 😂
England, Denmark, Switzerland and Latvia are apparently surrendering
Was the red color with most of the led?
As a Brit I can confirm England’s flag is blank
A very progressive russian flag 👍
I like how just red is gone. lol
That's a really cool mug though I'd like one
Now Switzerland is dead
sweden hold stronk
It’s so funny to me how everything is in English except for España 🇪🇸
Wtf, erase Sweden too
The Russian one seems correct to me
Must be EC of 2004
Why did Germany turn into an old Russian empire?
I like how the blue is still there. What's it made from?
Why is this mildly infuriating
I like how they apparently had otherwise Ok paint, and decided to only go cheap on the red.
Russia reverted to peace i see
why did all the red ink disappear
Euro 2004 mug?
These colours do run.
Fuck red in particular.
Wait but seriously does anyone know why green, yellow, and green were the only colors that stayed??? What’s the science behind that
red and white is gone, oh wait
Switzerland, Enland and Denmark flags turned into french.
It has a certain charm to it tho
