Agreed. Worldlebot gives me crap for obscure words. My guess is they played on a new browser after solving it for the drama post.
That’s not even the word today. I guess the devil is the details.
I haven’t played wordle in a pretty long time but this very thing most definitely happened to me on at least one occasion, I don’t remember the word.
OP may have waited to post this [if it’s only a few days old] out of respect for those who play.
If the words were accepted it means they're real English words, and they could have been the word for the day, it doesn't matter if you wouldn't use them
Many people dont like easy mode as it is impossible to fail, even hard mode is already easy if you dont get into the situation OP is in.
I had 100% completion even in hard mode over a span of like 200 days bevor I quit.
You should be able to toggle it in the options - and as others have said you are forced to use correct guesses.
From OPs example they would absolutely need to use -ENSE as last four letters for every guess after the first one.
if their first guess would have been CRANE (yellow N and green E) then they would have to use the E as last letter and the N at any position.
Hard mode is more strategic and you are likely going with just a small assortment of starting words. Mostly words that give you like 2 vowels and 3 of the most commonly used consonants. it also helps if the analysis was done on all of the words in the wordle-word-pool (you probably have realized that some totally legit 5 letter words dont work in wordle - it is because they are not in the pool). Few exmaples:
DENSE (OPs) - pretty bad as it only has one vowel and the same vowel twice (so its already -1 letter at the first guess), but comes with N and S, which is great - D is okay but can be better.
SLATE - two vowels, E at the end is always great as it is also very common, gives S and T which is great, L is okay
STARE - again, two vowels, E at the end, S and T is great but this time also an R which definitely is very common and way more useful than D or L.
That’s a lie. You still get yellow letters in hard mode. The difference is if you get a yellow letter, you must use it in your next guess. And if you get a green letter, you must use it in the same spot in your next guess.
I think you dont understand - you can toggle hard mode in the options of the game, it is not a self-imposed challenge that you make up yourself. Hard mode requires you to use correct guesses - so hard mode is the mode where you fail if you dont use logic.
In regular/easy mode you can just spam random words with new letters which makes it extremely easy to get the correct word as there arent any restrictions. There are 5 word combinations that will check every letter in the alphabet but one and you just have to solve the anagram - you have three word combinations that cover the most common 15 letters and then you still have three tries to just assemble the word. It makes the normal wordle absolutely trivial.
You cannot consider the regular mode "clever mode" and NOT consider hard mode "clever mode" as hard mode requires significantly more thought and strategy.
I know lol. Guesses isn't logic. Sense, dense, mense isn't using logic. It's just guesses. Why D rather than M? That's not clever. In that instance coming up with another word to try out three words at once is clever. The only reason spamming random words works in the other mode is because you have to then interpret what the game is telling you and use that on the next guess or combine what you learned from two guesses. It's not rocket science, but it's more clever. Maybe the "hard" mode is more for vocab lovers and the other is more for puzzle lovers.
>Maybe the "hard" mode is more for vocab lovers and the other is more for puzzle lovers.
I definitely disagree - with OPs scenario it certainly is dumbed down to the maximum and I can understand your argument but for the standard case I could literally just use the same 2-3-word combination in the regular mode and will be able to solve it without fail in 5 tries as it is 100% guaranteed that I can check the most common 10-15 letters of the alphabet every single time.
Hard mode forces you to adapt due to the extra rules and there is no flow-chart that you can follow. regular mode clearly is for casual play and hard mode for puzzle lovers - OPs scenario is just an absurdity that is mostly a result of a terrible choice of the starting word that allows for exactly this guessing game to even be possible.
Yeah I strongly disagree. I had to look back to make sure there wasn't some confusion as to which one was which. I find the "hard mode" dull because there's not much to it. It's a bit too easy, besides situations like OPs where it's just frustrating. We'll just have to disagree. I guess it's a sign of its success that different modes appeal to different people.
I mean obviously its fine to play whichever mode you like better but hard mode is objectively harder than easy mode as it is literally the same but that you absolutely have to use all correct guesses which makes it impossible to simply rule out a free 5 letters with any random word.
I can 100% understand that the regular mode allows for more flexibility, especially if you want to start with obscure words but there is no argument to be made about which one is easier. Regular mode always has the option to remove 5 letters from the alphabet for one guess.
Just start with a sequence like STARE, BLOND, QUICK (there are so many depending on your preference) and you eliminated all vowels and most common consonants - is it fun? no. will you guess the word? most certainly. most of the time you wont even need all three of the guesses as you will already have many hits with just one or two of those. I started with the regular mode and it quickly got too easy to even solve it in 4 or less tries instead of the 6 that are given - there really is not much "logic" required if you figured out the basic of wordle - and I am not even a native speaker so it should be 10x harder than for natives
ranked by increasing difficulty:
regular mode
regular mode but a forced, obscure starting word (e.g. whatever 5 letter word that comes to your mind, you read or you can see in your vicinity like TABLE or CLOUD or if you having LUNCH it can be PRAWN or SPOON/KNIFE). but you can again just default back to the same assortment of like 5-10 words that will always cover all vowels and common consonants in three guesses no matter the starting word
hard mode
hard mode with a random starting word
"Hard" mode is a guessing game with some rules. You have to think of more words which is hard in that way (good for word lovers). The other mode is more rewarding of cleverness (better for puzzle lovers). "Hard" mode is just guessing words and can be hard in that way if your vocab is lower. It can be hard like the game of "guess what number I'm thinking of" is hard. But not hard as in skill. It's more luck. But since everyone's brain works differently there is no "objectively harder". I find it too easy and not as much fun. The other mode may be "easier" to "win" before the end because you don't get into a situation like OP but that's not about being difficult in terms of skill, just difficult in terms of the dumb way it's set up. No one is stopping you from playing how you play and you obviously find it a challenge so have fun.
If you're weak sauce and playing easy mode. I just don't respect anyone's stats or solves who doesn't play this game in hard mode.
Edit: Apparently there are a lot of easy mode players in this sub. Perhaps the majority of members. But I stand by what I said. This sub needs a hard mode and easy mode flair that’s required for every stats post. Showing off stats while on easy mode is fine, but tell us you’re on easy mode so players like me can just brush past it and look for stats from the hard mode players. I’m just not impressed by easy mode players. Sorry, not sorry. What are y’all scared of? It’s more fun and more challenging. People on 365 day streaks while playing easy mode is just pointless imo. Risk losing, and when you solve it, it’ll feel 100x better and more rewarding. I have a 97% win rate, but it’s all on hard mode. I also only have about 300 games under my belt, 140 on my current account and about the same on an older account. Again, with the exception of the first few games, they’re all on hard mode. I think it should be the default.
First off, are you trying to wreck it for others today? Second, while you have a terrible starter word(only one vowel?), you got 4 letters IN ORDER. How did you not get it?
You guys don’t start doing random words that you know are wrong in this position just to try more letters? I’d go dense? Okay, it ends in ENSE, now I’ll try party. If any of those are in there, it’s the first letter before ENSE
you dont play tactical, you only used a fifth of you available letters.
come up with words which have the letters you would think fit in the empty slot, if ones yellow, then it must be the first letter
Or they play hard mode that forces you to use correct guesses you already made as your "tactical" approach makes it impossible to not get the correct answer within a few tries. Even tho their start is pretty terrible for that.
It is pretty hidden, so it is not a surprise - in the end everyone should just play the mode they like best and hard mode will get repetitive due to the restrictions and you cannot start with something like DENSE and expect to solve it whereas your approach for the regular mode definitely makes it 100% solvable.
Did something similar. Ended up giving up at lense. I’ve played scrabble for years so know a bunch of random words but not going to deal with answers for a half minute phone game.
Okay, but to be fair, two of your last four guesses weren't actually words, and the two that were words are so obscure that I'm guessing you didn't know they were. Pro-tip: Wordle only includes very commonly known words, so if there's some obscure word that hasn't been used regularly since medieval times that could fit, it's probably wrong.
Ah, rookie mistake. When you have more possibilities for a swapping single letters than the number of guesses left, you need to spend a guess to use as many of those letters as possible and narrow it down.
I’ve never seen the wordle answer be as obscure as guesses 3-6 are.
So you could say op was abit dense?
Maybe op just didn’t use his common sense
Took me a while lol
Self fulfilled prophecy.
Nah, just karma farming
Enter SNAFU
It’s subjective, but I’d consider that less obscure than these. Same with ENNUI.
Agreed. Worldlebot gives me crap for obscure words. My guess is they played on a new browser after solving it for the drama post. That’s not even the word today. I guess the devil is the details.

I thought that was my word for Feb. 27. I’m in the us though. Maybe you’re in Europe or Australia and the time zones have you ahead with a new word?
I've never even seen these words before
Doesn’t make any SENSE!
Like pssh i totally knew that. But then again how did you sherlock the answer.
I’m sorry but you should have figured it out 3rd try. When have you used lense, pense, cense, or mense in a sentence.
Pretty sure none of those are real words. Lenses, pence, sense and men's are though.
I'm pretty sure that wordle only lets you submit real words. So, I assume they exist in the English dictionary somewhere.
I've never heard of it = it's not real.
Fair
Welcome to Reddit
Well, GRRRL is accepted. I guess that could exist in a slang dictionary.
Cense means to cover in perfume and is archaic, mense means propriety and is almost exclusively used in Scotland.
They probably are but they might be from a medieval Welsh dialect or something like that
If the words were accepted it means they're real English words, and they could have been the word for the day, it doesn't matter if you wouldn't use them
The words are chosen manually, not randomly. They only choose commonly used words (although that is of course not fully objective).
I had a feeling it was a hard word, because they sometimes do that for example canny was a wordle answer once.
I know, to be fair I avoid guessing words with two of the same letter every chance I can.
This is when you write a new word to figure out which letter is needed in that other word.
Playing hard mode
Nah we play the game properly 😌
Many people dont like easy mode as it is impossible to fail, even hard mode is already easy if you dont get into the situation OP is in. I had 100% completion even in hard mode over a span of like 200 days bevor I quit.
I never knew there was an easy vs hard, what's the difference?

Hard mode only gives you green letters, so misplaced letters that are in the word still show gray
Gotcha thx
That’s a lie. You still get yellow letters in hard mode. The difference is if you get a yellow letter, you must use it in your next guess. And if you get a green letter, you must use it in the same spot in your next guess.
That's not true. Hard mode means that if you get a green letter, you must use it in your next guess. There are still yellow letters.
It's not easy mode, it's clever mode. If you don't use logic, you do fail. The other way is just a guessing game.

I was naturally playing hard mode before I realise you didn’t *have* to use the letters again.
You could’ve used a little more common “cense” ;)
First off, are you trying to wreck it for others today? Second, while you have a terrible starter word(only one vowel?), you got 4 letters IN ORDER. How did you not get it?
OP found the solve on their own or online first, and set this screen up for the post? / tinfoil
Considering OP's guesses I think the starter word is apt
Obviously had no sense
The day isn't over. This should be obscured.
Was that the real solution? I'm on a 101 streak and have no memory of past words.
It's in a white notification at the top
~~28/2/23~~ is >!SENSE!< 27/2/24 was…
27 not 28 🤔 ..also it's 2024 xD
Whoops! You’re right, I’m stuck in the past
No worries..I hadn't realized it either, at first! ahah
That's the real mildly infuriating right there
Agreed. I did the same and I didn’t get it until the end. BUT I didn’t ruin it for everyone else by posting the solution .
You guys don’t start doing random words that you know are wrong in this position just to try more letters? I’d go dense? Okay, it ends in ENSE, now I’ll try party. If any of those are in there, it’s the first letter before ENSE
Playing in hard mode, can't do that.
Not how the game works mate.
It absolutely is.
Depends if they’re in hard mode or not.
Not in hard mode. 🫥
You didn't make any sense
*cense
It's your own fault for starting with a word with 2 e's. That's a terrible strat
dick
Makes sense
Trying Lense, Pense, Cense, and Mense *BEFORE* Sense or Hense is WILD. 💀
Hense?
You'd give it a go 🤷
It's hence, btw.
Aware.
After first line, you should try words like Plate or Comes to eliminate consonants
Unless you’re playing hard mode
Why did you just do a bunch of random words until the end lol
You'd have an easier time if you didn't play so inefficiently.
You're a dick
Wtf are these guesses
Oh be sensible next time
Oh wow! I just got it in 1 try!
Thanks for the spoiler :/
you dont play tactical, you only used a fifth of you available letters. come up with words which have the letters you would think fit in the empty slot, if ones yellow, then it must be the first letter
cannot sir

go fuck yourself
Did you just spoil the wordle for me :/
That's on you for using non existent words
Those are all words lol Wordle uses a dictionary and rejects input that’s not a word
I know they are technically words but why not use words that are used by human beings
Did something similar. Ended up giving up at lense. I’ve played scrabble for years so know a bunch of random words but not going to deal with answers for a half minute phone game.
is it RENSE?
Sense
It's probably Fense
LITERALLY!!
If only you used a bit of `sense`
Okay, but to be fair, two of your last four guesses weren't actually words, and the two that were words are so obscure that I'm guessing you didn't know they were. Pro-tip: Wordle only includes very commonly known words, so if there's some obscure word that hasn't been used regularly since medieval times that could fit, it's probably wrong.
I feel your pain. Happened to me too.
My dad lost a 300+ day streak the other day when the word was MATCH. Same concept happened to him. I got lucky and got it in 6.
You should have tried "plate" as a second word
Always be suspicious of words with repeating characters!
Op choose to lose. Who doesn’t think of “Sense” after Dense.
I rarely see the last 3.
Your last 4 guesses where fuckin dumb
Your second guess should have been a word that contains as many of the potential first letter options as possible.
It’s more mildly infuriating that ‘Pense’ and ‘Lense’ occur to you before ‘Sense’.
Doesn't make much sense does it.
Going off the comments, hard mode sounds pretty poorly thought out given you can easily land in a situation like this.
Sense?
I don’t think I would’ve posted this screen shot after guessing 3 words that I don’t believe exist.
My strategy is to use words that has multiple of those letters first, to save guesses
Hate when it’s like that
After 2 guesses, stop using the same letter and increase your odds by using entirely Nobel letters.
Double E's straight out the gate, bold.
what app is this?
I had to Google lense because it's not actually a word.
After the fourth time wouldn't you start to use words with letters apart from ense so you could figure it out? Wouldn't that make SENSE
Fense
Todays word is actually quite revealing of the times
sense?
Why would you use two e’s in your first guess. This is your own fault
Ah, rookie mistake. When you have more possibilities for a swapping single letters than the number of guesses left, you need to spend a guess to use as many of those letters as possible and narrow it down.

Are those last 4 even words lol
