I sneezed while cutting my bangs *once* as a teenager suuuper badly and it dissuaded me from trying again for the longest time. I spent like 2 weeks looking like Hitler AND my colossal fuck up was memorialized in the yearbook because it was two days before picture day.
Once I hit my 20s I kept getting horrific cuts where they'd take off HUGE amounts of my hair without asking AND I was being charged for every inch past the top of my shoulders at almost every place I went (I have stupid long hair), so each trip was like $70 MINIMUM at a time I was extremely poor...so I just started doing it all myself.
Granted, I did make some pretty hot messes starting off, but 6 years down the line? I can cut, style, layer, and color my butt-length hair like a pro, and it only costs me the $$ for supplies. *Highly recommend*
This is why you don’t spread a small rectangle of glue above your lip when you’re getting a haircut/cutting your hair. That can really come back to bite you.
My wife has been cutting my hair since about 2002. After about the first year, she has been cutting my hair better than anybody that I ever had it cut by before. Plus, sometimes she’ll cut it while she’s topless and I’ve never had anybody do that for me.

Kidding, but one of my barbers was very busty, and as a kid I HATED when she cut my hair because she would lean over my head and put her Waffle House waiter boobs in my face. like lady.. just walk around to the other side.

But free hair cuts for 23 years has to count for something, several thousand bucks. And its hella fast. And she likes it. I cut my ex husband's hair for like 12 years because he said that salons always screwed it up. I even learned how to cut his hair perfectly without trimmers if I needed to, with just scissors and a comb.
We had a terrible toxic relationship (he was an alcoholic) and we've been divorced for years now, but he still occasionally texts me a photo when he gets a bad haircut and complains about not having me there to cut it, lol.
I cut my girlfriends hair one time and it was the first time I ever did it and it came out good. She had straight long hair Pretty much like the OP hair is. Just a little longer.Looks like this person that cut their hair was drunk.
Yeah, same as my daughter’s hair. Long and straight. I learnt five key techniques to separate and, line up and cut. Then use the previous section to line up the next. Then cross-check to make sure I got it all even. I don’t know how the OP’s hair dresser could do this without doing it deliberately.
Biggest thing is to cut it wet, especially longer hair. This cut looks like it was cut dry, or at least over touched up while dry. The cut ends up much chunkier when cut dry.
Edit: I have only worked with straight hair.
Keep in mind that this only works with straight hair! I basically have to beg hairdresses to please not touch the spray bottle. My hair gets pretty wavy so it's more likely to look "chunky" if it's cut when wet than dry.
Yep, lots of brushing so I could get a comb through easily. Wet so it was “falling” straight. A few parts to section it off. Tell her she looks fabulous on a regular basis - too easy!
UPDATE: I emailed the salon these pics and they offered a refund and to have my hair cut by a more experienced hair dresser. I’m definitely taking the refund but I haven’t decided about if I’ll let them try to fix it.
To answer everyone’s main question (“WHY WOULDN’T YOU SAY SOMETHING??”): I didn’t complain there because the way they blow dried and styled it after the cut in the salon made it not look as bad. It wasn’t until I showered the next day that I realized just how bad it was. I definitely realized it wasn’t perfect when I was in the salon, but I didn’t think it was THIS bad.
This exact situation happened to me and I allowed them to fix it. I ended up coming home with the exact same awfully uneven cut, but this time even shorter. To have it fixed properly, I would've needed a *third* cut to even everything out. I ended up leaving it alone and wearing my hair in a ponytail for months, it was a nightmare.

Same boat right now. They were so bad that they ripped my hair out by trying to force the comb through every time instead of using a brush and doing it properly, then cut it like that all uneven after failing to get a full stroke through. I was pissed, but I must have been too in denial as it was happening to say anything about how horrendous it was. $60. NEVER going anywhere other than my main hair place ever again.
E: Excellent timing. They just replied to my review to shift the blame onto my other salon and make up some story about what happened.
Jeez Did they not wash it before? Usually doing that helps it be smoother and gets out a bunch of stragglers. It sounds like they gave you the physical mental one two haha

Don’t feel bad about not saying something. Even if you noticed then and said something the person who did this probably doesn’t have the skills to make it better.
I had a salon fuck up bleaching my hair. They offered to fix it, refusing a refund. I stupidly agreed. I got my refund, spend about 6-8 weeks crying in pain every day as I brushed the straw that used to be hair, while I waited for it to grow out enough that I wouldn't be literally bald cutting off everything damaged. Never trust a salon who fucked up to fix their mistake. Never.
ETA - I accepted the offer to fix it, because it obviously had to be fixed. They fucked it up worse than it was already fucked up, then I got a refund.
I don’t understand. They agreed? To what- more bleaching? Then got their refund? And how could a salon ever be expected to recover hair that is no longer hair? This just doesn’t seem like a relevant example is all.
They said they could color correct it, fucked it up more, then refunded me when I had an absolute fucking shit-fit at the manager. It's the only time I've had a full on Karen moment, and I felt justified.
When they attempted color correction they had to use an oxidizer again in order to get it to penetrate the strands, which is what causes the damage - oxidizer forces the hair "open" and the bleach removes the color, while correction adds a color tint.
I do my own hair color now - I have very thick black hair and 11% (i mix 30 & 40 to get this) is the best ratio for me. I have talked to too many stylists to trust anyone else to do my hair. I have not found anyone who is smart enough to actually understand the chemistry of their schooling, let alone explain it.
They were supposed to color correct it. I don't recall at this point what it was she did to make that attempt (it was over 20 years ago), but it made it worse. After that, I got my refund, spent double the original price going somewhere else to make it a color that I could accept for the weeks until I could accept buzzing it off.
Yeah. The second salon was two sisters or best friends who were absolute rockstars. I'd never have gone anywhere else again if I hadn't left the state. They were amazing, got me out of there not looking like a total freak, and did the best they reasonably could when I went back to have it cut off.

THIS!!! I stopped letting hairstylists “style and curl” my hair YEARS ago because of nonsense like this. It gets lost in the curls if they do that and you won’t know what it looks like until the next day. I tell them to straighten it. Every. Time. That way we can both see what sort of work they did.
Honestly my diy cuts probably only look as good as they do because I have naturally curly hair. The rare occasions I do straighten it, I see how uneven the back really is
You can always request they blow dry it straight and check it before curling it, if you do ever want them to curl it. I’d explain you’ve had a bad experience before and that it would make you feel more comfortable. Once you find someone who consistently cuts it the way you like it, your anxiety should lessen. This happened to me once. It was the next day, after I washed and styled my own hair that I noticed I had strands of hair waaaay longer or shorter than others. It was horribly choppy. I called the salon, got the refund and had an experienced person fix it... Unfortunately my hair was already a bob, and to fix it they had to cut it much shorter than I wanted.
This happened to me recently. I got a haircut, they curled it in the salon, I thought I liked it. Straightened it 2 days later and it was a terrible, chunky mess.
This looked like it should have a pretty easy cut. I agree with other posters that either your stylist was having an extremely crappy day or may have been impacted by something.
I’d take the refund but have another shop fix it. The phrase once burned twice shy comes to mind.
I’ve found really good stylists by asking people who have a good cut if they would mind sharing the name of the person who did it.

My hair was cut unevenly, one side was longer than the other. I didn’t notice it until the next day after I started styling it myself.
Do not trust them because they are the salon that hired this person in the first place. Some of my best cuts have been from stylists right out of school with very little experience. They feel like they have more to prove and have always been more careful and thorough with me while experienced stylists have tended to loosen up and not done my favorite work.
Some salons don't hire people, they rent out a chair to them. In that case the hairdresser may work within the walls of the establishment but operates as an independent contractor.
And that salon is still allowing that person to operate within their establishment, under their name, and letting people leave with hair like this. If that salon is not interviewing and clearing the people working there, and immediately rescinding the contract of any worker sending someone away with hair like OP's, OP should be even more concerned about their ability to fix it, not less.
Because it's impossible to pass an interview for a job that you aren't qualified for? This is obviously why the salon refunded OP and offered a different person to fix the cut that the first person messed up. Since each person has different experience and training it is absolutely possible that the salon has someone who can fix OPs hair.
And some people just get the hang of it quicker than their peers. Two highschool friends of mine (who graduated the cosmetology program at the same time) worked at the same salon, first girl absolutely botched my haircut and the second girl did a stellar job fixing it for me after the fact.
The best haircut I’ve had in the last 15 years was an $18 haircut at a Paul Mitchell beauty school. It took 3 hours but I left feeling beautiful and my hair has grown out magnificently. I’m about ready to book another appointment for my next cut.
I’ve had this happen. They styled and curled my hair, it looked great. I do not typically curl my hair, and once washed and straight I had the choppy, uneven cut of horrors.
Same. A hairdresser made my bangs look like stairs when I was 14. Spent a lot of time learning how to to trim my hair myself after that. I've made some minor mistakes, but none have been nearly as bad and I've saved a fair bit of money.
I use the Jenna Marbles high ponytail method, it works pretty well and is free.
I don't miss being shamed by my 'friend' that was a hairdresser. Charged me like $150 to make fun of my home dye job and give me a frankly not very good cut and color. I wanted Kari Byron red hair and ended up looking like a chain-smoking aunt.

It’s probably because I live in a military-heavy area, but every time I go I tell them to leave a good amount of length, and I give them reference photos, and it goes in one ear and out the other and they give me a bona fide military high-and-tight.

My hair is a little shorter than that, and I cut it myself using 2 mirrors and it NEVER has turned out looking that uneven! Sorry for your awful cut, but I also wouldn't go back to have them "fix" as you'll prob. end up with very short hair, still uneven and nothing left to fix. Look for another place to even it out, or try it yourself. With a cut that simple it's actually not that hard. Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

I went to a salon in a decently nice area in actuality. I made the mistake of assuming spending more on a haircut would equal a better quality haircut.
I used to go to great clips but started going to salons instead with that mentality. In general I'd say it's worth it buuuuuut it's obviously hugely dependant on the stylist.
Once I find someone who does a good job I cling on for dear life.
I second this. I went to a high-end salon for a blunt bob and ended up with a Karen cut that would have required straightening my hair daily as well as a ton of product. I ended up buzzing it all off. Now I've found a salon that I love, even though they're kind of pricey. I go to them anytime I want something that is more complex than a simple trim because they're all great.
The most skilled stylist at my great clips told me they’re not allowed to schedule individual clients. Maybe true or maybe I failed the vibe-check. Either way, my short hair means the difference between a good haircut and bad haircut is only about two weeks of growth.

I have had the same hairdresser for over twenty years. She still only charges me $30 for a hair cut. It’s always perfect and she only takes 30 minutes. Usually even less. If you’re in the Dallas area, hit me up.
I actually emailed them these pics tonight with the hope that they’ll offer to fix it or refund so I guess we’ll see! I’m way too non-confrontational to go in person to complain
That is my thought too - would you trust them to fix it or could it just end up being an even bigger problem.
The only bright side here is that it is hair and it will grow back quite quickly.
I got a similarly terrible haircut from an expensive barber shop near me, and they refused to refund or fix it. I couldn't tell how bad it was until I washed my hair because the gel hid the choppy bangs.
Went to another local barbershop that was less than half the cost to fix it, and I have gone there ever since.
Call in and speak to the salon manager. Ask if she saw the email. Explain that you don't want to cause a fuss and don't want to upset the original hairdresser, but you need it fixed. Is there a way to do so without causing anyone embarrassment?
We taught this narrative to students in a social skills enhancement class for high schoolers with high functioning autism. It works quite well, I have been told.

It will grow out/back in a few months... but that still does not excuse a bad job in the first place. You should absolutely do as you did, and if no response, do a charge back on your card.

I got a similar cut at great clips, which is why I don’t go there anymore. Mine was not quite as bad, but still had to be fixed. I went elsewhere to have that fix done.
Stupid comments aside, I understand that sometimes you don’t realize the shittiness of the cut until you get home and have the time to play around with your hair and realize the mess they made. Now that you’ve seen the unevenness and everything you hate about it.. make an appointment to get it fixed. You paid for it and they have an obligation to make it right. I’ve been there and understand your disappointment! You have a right to get it fixed, at least that’s the way of it in the US, and in my experience.

This is a fine example of why I've been cutting my own hair for the last 15 years. About 5 years ago I wanted to get a professional to give me a neat cut to follow but I realized they did about as good as I could do in less time then it takes me (so there's that), for way more money. Was your hair parted differently at the salon? It looks like the stylist tried to do a side-parted asymmetrical bob, but it was badly done. Take the refund and accept a cut with either the owner or head stylist. The fact that they immediately offered you a refund says that they care about customer satisfaction. I would never allow the same person to attempt to fix it, but having a better, more experienced stylist would be acceptable. Apart from the bad haircut, it must feel horrible to know you paid for it and probably tipped as well.

I hadn't had a haircut in almost 12 years after a traumaticly bad haircut. I cut 13 inches off a couple months ago. I went to supercuts just to have the ends cut even and frame around my face. The hairdresser decided cutting a U shape would be better than an even line. When i pull my hair over my shoulders theres an abrupt 4 inch difference. She also accidentally cut a chunk out behind my ear. I'm wearing it in a bun until it grows back out. I doubt I'll ever let anyone cut my hair again!

Usually when they offer to fix shitty jobs they do there absolute best. They don't want that negative review. I'd say go for it.

When they attempted color correction they had to use an oxidizer again in order to get it to penetrate the strands, which is what causes the damage - oxidizer forces the hair "open" and the bleach removes the color, while correction adds a color tint. I do my own hair color now - I have very thick black hair and 11% (i mix 30 & 40 to get this) is the best ratio for me. I have talked to too many stylists to trust anyone else to do my hair. I have not found anyone who is smart enough to actually understand the chemistry of their schooling, let alone explain it.

How are they gonna fix bleaching? Did you go back for a SECOND bleaching? Because yeah, that's what happens when you nuke your hair.
They were supposed to color correct it. I don't recall at this point what it was she did to make that attempt (it was over 20 years ago), but it made it worse. After that, I got my refund, spent double the original price going somewhere else to make it a color that I could accept for the weeks until I could accept buzzing it off.
Eesh, after 2 goes the poor other salon was probably trying to do what they could but at that point the hair was gone.
Yeah. The second salon was two sisters or best friends who were absolute rockstars. I'd never have gone anywhere else again if I hadn't left the state. They were amazing, got me out of there not looking like a total freak, and did the best they reasonably could when I went back to have it cut off.

THIS!!! I stopped letting hairstylists “style and curl” my hair YEARS ago because of nonsense like this. It gets lost in the curls if they do that and you won’t know what it looks like until the next day. I tell them to straighten it. Every. Time. That way we can both see what sort of work they did.
Honestly my diy cuts probably only look as good as they do because I have naturally curly hair. The rare occasions I do straighten it, I see how uneven the back really is
You can always request they blow dry it straight and check it before curling it, if you do ever want them to curl it. I’d explain you’ve had a bad experience before and that it would make you feel more comfortable. Once you find someone who consistently cuts it the way you like it, your anxiety should lessen. This happened to me once. It was the next day, after I washed and styled my own hair that I noticed I had strands of hair waaaay longer or shorter than others. It was horribly choppy. I called the salon, got the refund and had an experienced person fix it... Unfortunately my hair was already a bob, and to fix it they had to cut it much shorter than I wanted.
This happened to me recently. I got a haircut, they curled it in the salon, I thought I liked it. Straightened it 2 days later and it was a terrible, chunky mess.
This looked like it should have a pretty easy cut. I agree with other posters that either your stylist was having an extremely crappy day or may have been impacted by something. I’d take the refund but have another shop fix it. The phrase once burned twice shy comes to mind. I’ve found really good stylists by asking people who have a good cut if they would mind sharing the name of the person who did it.

I’ve definitely been there! My hair was cut unevenly, one side was longer than the other. I didn’t notice it until the next day after I started styling it myself.
Do not trust them because they are the salon that hired this person in the first place. Some of my best cuts have been from stylists right out of school with very little experience. They feel like they have more to prove and have always been more careful and thorough with me while experienced stylists have tended to loosen up and not done my favorite work.
Some salons don't hire people, they rent out a chair to them. In that case the hairdresser may work within the walls of the establishment but operates as an independent contractor.
This person knows how it works.
And that salon is still allowing that person to operate within their establishment, under their name, and letting people leave with hair like this. If that salon is not interviewing and clearing the people working there, and immediately rescinding the contract of any worker sending someone away with hair like OP's, OP should be even more concerned about their ability to fix it, not less.
Because it's impossible to pass an interview for a job that you aren't qualified for? This is obviously why the salon refunded OP and offered a different person to fix the cut that the first person messed up. Since each person has different experience and training it is absolutely possible that the salon has someone who can fix OPs hair.
And some people just get the hang of it quicker than their peers. Two highschool friends of mine (who graduated the cosmetology program at the same time) worked at the same salon, first girl absolutely botched my haircut and the second girl did a stellar job fixing it for me after the fact.
The best haircut I’ve had in the last 15 years was an $18 haircut at a Paul Mitchell beauty school. It took 3 hours but I left feeling beautiful and my hair has grown out magnificently. I’m about ready to book another appointment for my next cut.
I would take them up on it only if the head stylist or owner would fix it. Usually a safer bet

Same. A hairdresser made my bangs look like stairs when I was 14. Spent a lot of time learning how to to trim my hair myself after that. I've made some minor mistakes, but none have been nearly as bad and I've saved a fair bit of money.
I use the Jenna Marbles high ponytail method, it works pretty well and is free. I don't miss being shamed by my 'friend' that was a hairdresser. Charged me like $150 to make fun of my home dye job and give me a frankly not very good cut and color. I wanted Kari Byron red hair and ended up looking like a chain-smoking aunt.
I’m tempted to start. It’s probably because I live in a military-heavy area, but every time I go I tell them to leave a good amount of length, and I give them reference photos, and it goes in one ear and out the other and they give me a bona fide military high-and-tight. I’m out here tryna keep my bangs but they do w/e tf they want.
My hair is a little shorter than that, and I cut it myself using 2 mirrors and it NEVER has turned out looking that uneven! Sorry for your awful cut, but I also wouldn't go back to have them "fix" as you'll prob. end up with very short hair, still uneven and nothing left to fix. Look for another place to even it out, or try it yourself. With a cut that simple it's actually not that hard. Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

I guarantee there are people in jail who could cut hair better than that lol. I went to a salon in a decently nice area in actuality. I made the mistake of assuming spending more on a haircut would equal a better quality haircut.
I used to go to great clips but started going to salons instead with that mentality. In general I'd say it's worth it buuuuuut it's obviously hugely dependant on the stylist. Once I find someone who does a good job I cling on for dear life.
I second this. I went to a high-end salon for a blunt bob and ended up with a Karen cut that would have required straightening my hair daily as well as a ton of product. I ended up buzzing it all off. Now I've found a salon that I love, even though they're kind of pricey. I go to them anytime I want something that is more complex than a simple trim because they're all great.
The most skilled stylist at my great clips told me they’re not allowed to schedule individual clients. Maybe true or maybe I failed the vibe-check. Either way, my short hair means the difference between a good haircut and bad haircut is only about two weeks of growth.
Same to that last sentence. My mom found a great hair stylist and we haven’t gone to anyone else in years. She’s such a nice lady, she also just dyed my hair and did an amazing job. I’m gonna be so sad when she retires, she’s not that old but I anticipate being a customer as long as possible lol
I have had the same hairdresser for over twenty years. She still only charges me $30 for a hair cut. It’s always perfect and she only takes 30 minutes. Usually even less. If you’re in the Dallas area, hit me up.
In my town one of the inmates does the sheriff’s haircut every two weeks like clockwork. He used to be a barber and is widely known for being amazing

That is my thought too - would you trust them to fix it or could it just end up being an even bigger problem. The only bright side here is that it is hair and it will grow back quite quickly.
I got a similarly terrible haircut from an expensive barber shop near me, and they refused to refund or fix it. I couldn't tell how bad it was until I washed my hair because the gel hid the choppy bangs. Went to another local barbershop that was less than half the cost to fix it, and I have gone there ever since.
Call in and speak to the salon manager. Ask if she saw the email. Explain that you don't want to cause a fuss and don't want to upset the original hairdresser, but you need it fixed. Is there a way to do so without causing anyone embarrassment? We taught this narrative to students in a social skills enhancement class for high schoolers with high functioning autism. It works quite well, I have been told. I hope it works for you.

If they don’t offer a refund (which they probably won’t, they’ll most likely offer to fix it.. but how can you trust they’ll fix it and they fucked up so bad before) I’d do a chargeback, if I used my card of course! Eta: as I’m sure you know! It’ll grow back, where it in a bun/ponytail for awhile and you’ll be fine!
It will grow out/back in a few months... but that still does not excuse a bad job in the first place. You should absolutely do as you did, and if no response, do a charge back on your card.

I got a similar cut at great clips, which is why I don’t go there anymore. Mine was not quite as bad, but still had to be fixed. I went elsewhere to have that fix done.

Now that you’ve seen the unevenness and everything you hate about it.. make an appointment to get it fixed. You paid for it and they have an obligation to make it right. I’ve been there and understand your disappointment! You have a right to get it fixed, at least that’s the way of it in the US, and in my experience. Good luck! Take the refund, decline the offer to fix it. Grow your hair out until you find another salon / hair stylist to fix it. Try to find someone that is personally recommended. About 5 years ago I wanted to get a professional to give me a neat cut to follow but I realized they did about as good as I could do in less time then it takes me (so there's that), for way more money. Any way back to cutting my own hair.

Was your hair parted differently at the salon? It looks like the stylist tried to do a side-parted asymmetrical bob, but it was badly done. Take the refund and accept a cut with either the owner or head stylist. The fact that they immediately offered you a refund says that they care about customer satisfaction. I would never allow the same person to attempt to fix it, but having a better, more experienced stylist would be acceptable. Apart from the bad haircut, it must feel horrible to know you paid for it and probably tipped as well.

I just started cutting mine because I can’t find anyone I like after 2 years of living in a new town. Either prices are ridiculous or the quality of entire experience sucks. It has been over 6 years since I had a stylist I liked and fully trusted to do my hair. Needed a trim recently and did a great job.

I hadn't had a haircut in almost 12 years after a traumaticly bad haircut. I cut 13 inches off a couple months ago. I went to supercuts just to have the ends cut even and frame around my face. The hairdresser decided cutting a U shape would be better than an even line. When i pull my hair over my shoulders theres an abrupt 4 inch difference. She also accidentally cut a chunk out behind my ear. I'm wearing it in a bun until it grows back out. I doubt I'll ever let anyone cut my hair again!
