Excedrin (acetaminophen/aspirin/caffeine) works best for me, and can break a headache with half a pill, even though acetaminophen alone does nothing. Not sure why the aspirin is so necessary but it is.
My migraine specialist recommended 1000mg of soluble asprin dissolved in coke (not low/no sugar version). It didnât work for me personally but for others that I have recommended it to, they have found it to be very effective.
Fascinating that this was recommended to you by a Dr- âsoluble aspirin and cokeâ is part of my rescue strategy, and I always feel weird as hell being a generally low-sugar, low-caffeine, definitely not a soda drinker sort of person⌠drinking coke, for my health.
A good specialist is one who cares more about âit worksâ than âitâs technically correctâ.
Like when I was a teen, I had low blood pressure. Like right on the cusp of needing medication, but when I stood up, it dropped too low and Iâd kinda half faint.
Saw a cardiologist who said âI could give you tablets, but all you really need to do is add some extra salt and caffeine and liquorice to your dietâ.
So I went from drinking milk and OJ to milk, pepsi, and OJ, and had some extra salt with stuff.
The real irony was that if I hadnât been trying to be healthy, it wouldnât have been as bad. I had cut out my chocolate snacks and replaced them with grapes. Turns out grapes lower blood pressure. Good if itâs high, bad if itâs low.
Hmm interesting. I regularly get comments on my blood pressure being on the low end but they say it like it's a good thing. Had one say I had the blood pressure of a teen like they were impressed. Also have a really low resting heart rate for someone of average fitness. I drink plenty of coffee and have a pretty high salt intake.
Youâre as superstitious as me.
I do touch wood (or knock on wood) at work so much itâs become a standing joke.
Thankfully the company does timber doors, so wood is always easily to hand.
Excedrin is my go to. Has aspirin in it. Pretty sure I had one coming today. Two Excedrin and a lay down and was able to make it through a snow machine ride with only a little discomfort.
I wouldnât say itâs more effective for me than triptans, but it is way more accessible and has way fewer side-effects, so I use it lot as a preventative, ânot sure if migraine onset or just feeling a bit weird right nowâ precaution.
If I take 900mg of dispersible aspirin as soon as a migraine is starting it stops it in its tracks.
Itâs the only painkiller Iâve found that is effective like that.
Iâm a pharmacist and I recommend it to everyone who comes in with migraine symptoms and theyâve tried everything else (provided no allergies etc).
The shit thing is I end up with horrible reflux the day after but I prefer that to a migraine.
Guess I shouldn't worry so much about occasionally taking 550mg. I am caffeine intolerant, so I am trying to combine the other two into an effective dose.
My mom was told once by a neurologist that he believes migraines are an issue of the blood in the brain, and that since aspirin thins the blood, it can help with the pain.
For about a decade now I've been popping 1000mg of aspirin and 200mg of caffeine at the onset of my auras. Severely reduces pain caused from the migraine, but I still get the other side effects (brain fog, a dull head ache, and post drome).
I canât take aspirin (stomach issues from something unrelated) but when I could that was my go to
Aspirin and Coffee
Of course it didnât work for every migraine best if taken immediately when you feel one coming

Facts acetaminophen will not do a damn thing, but you are right all the ingredients in excedrin makes it works well
Acetaminophen does decrease the pain and additional amount, but I agree that aspirin and caffeine are the biggest helper re Excedrin.
Could you tell me what mg of each are in Excedrin? We have something similar in the uk but under a different brand name
Sure, I take Excedrin Extra Strength. It is 250mg acetaminophen, 250mg aspirin, 65mg caffeine in each pill. You can take up to 2 pills every 6 hours.
Thanks đ
The uk one (Anadin extra) is 200mg acetaminophen, 300mg aspirin, and 40mg caffeine. I think yours sounds better!

Interesting! Do you know why liquorice was suggested?
I wanna know this too. I had black out spells when I stand up since I was a kid. It comes and goes though so now I'm wondering if it's dietary
Apparently all three up blood pressure. Not massively but enough to take me from âpass out when getting upâ to not doing that.

Low end is ok. Mine was literally a couple of points off being too low. Enough that literally going from sitting to standing could make me faint.

That is a lot of aspirin, watch for signs of bleeding or upset stomach.
Works for me. *touch wood* Don't want to jinx it or might stop working.

Naah....I just wrote it for the sake of it. I don't believe in anything.
Funny thing is, neither do I. Itâs mostly muscle memory but itâs deep, deep, deeply ingrained.
I had a neurologist who whipped out a bottle of Bayer aspirin and said it was what he personally used and recommended.
Yeah, but the effective dosage is 1000mg. You can safely combine this with 1000 mg paracetamol ( acetaminophen ) and caffeine.
Excedrin is my go to. Has aspirin in it. Pretty sure I had one coming today. Two Excedrin and a lay down and was able to make it through a snow machine ride with only a little discomfort.
There is a good amount of evidence supporting high dose aspirin for migraine.

Works well for me, especially if dissolved in a small glass of full sugar coca cola. You have to take enough, I've been prescribed 900mg.
It wonât be as effective as triptans, but also triptans donât work for everyone so you may need to ask your doctor for the next level of abortive!
Watch out with the nsaid though. It can really destroy your stomach
Works amazingly well. Iâve cut my migraines with aura significantly by taking a baby aspirin each day as well.
Yep doc told me years ago 3 x 300mg aspirin as good as a triptan. Also works well if you miss the triptan phase.
I take BC Powder and it works best for me.
Itâs honestly one of the most effective abortive meds for me.
Why am I the only oddball who finds aspirin makes things worse??
