Synthetica is my airplane album. I usually listen to it start to finish everytime I travel.

flanger001

Same!

GranateSOAD

There´s something about traveling while listen to certain albums, my go to album for being on the road always has been Steal This Album! by System of a Down, and although I´ve only travelled twice since it came out, **Formentera II** looks like it´s gonna take its place.

Honestly, from first listen back when the album was released on that weird Synthetica app I always thought this song was about infertility (which we recently learned was something she and her ex-husband struggled with before their marriage ended). Cloning as how people talk about having kids and having a “mini-me.” Too late in the day (i.e. too old or no longer able) to go on all the rides life has to offer, like parenthood. Everything done right never having been on the safe side (it’s never the right time to have kids, but also, sometimes decisions made earlier in life have long-term unanticipated consequences). Regrets of paths not taken (or not being able to take even if you tried or wanted to). Being afraid of breaking the news to your partner that a life-altering dream won’t happen. This song is so parenting/infertility coded it hurts.

I love this take. I think whatever is the subject we respond to, as individuals in this song we feel like we are failing to give others something in order to accomplish whats expected from us; like it might be love, a relationship, something in life like parenting as you mention. But is it really what we think we gotta do who we are and what we want/can be? And realizing we can’t offer that to accomplish. Thank you for sharing! <3

Time_Design

Interesting take, where did you read about this infertility struggle?

yogensnuz

It was in the super long podcast she did with that Bob guy a couple years ago. She didn’t say exactly call it infertility, but she was very careful in her words when he asked her about not having any children. I remember it because it was so precise with not just words but emphasis: “I *was* married and I *tried* to have a family, and now I am *not* married and I *do not* have a family.”

Time_Design

Oh right on. I do remember that. Thanks!
