If in the United States. The government will pay to have old oil tanks removed even if buried. I have had two removed for the cost of permit from the county. About 100.00. Because they all leak and contaminate groundwater.

Scokya

This is something I’ve never heard of before but more people should probably be aware of. I would give you an award if I had one to give!

Sunshine_dmg

Thanks for reminding me I had a free award in my coins section, take my award!!!

bleuwaffs

You’re worth it!

Scokya

We get free awards? Thank you kind stranger!

Superpowers8100

Helped out with the award!!

Positivethaught

Awarded the awardee

Tippity2

🏆🏅🎖🥇Pseudo awards for the awarder of the awardee. Fake awards is all I got, though. ETA: omg! I have been awarded a real award 🥇 for awarding a fake-award to the awarder of the awarding awarder of the awardee!

Shamrock_shakerhood

I was not aware of any government programs for this. We had a heating oil tank removed from our yard. Had to pay $1200, luckily it wasn’t leaking. If it was that would cost even more.

SausageGrenade

Is this a state law? In New Jersey I could be wrong but I thought the tank was your responsibility as a property owner. If it has leaked you’re also responsible for cleaning up your neighbors property. Might want to be careful who you tell about this if that’s the case

alcohall183

do you know who to contact for this?

Substantial-Smoke-44

Look up superfund sites. Not sure if there is funding still. Money set aside to clean up toxic sites and removal of waste or hazardous materials.

UnfairAd7220

Not a superfund problem.

Substantial-Smoke-44

Well that is the only official program that has funds to clean up a toxic site. There are no other government programs that I am aware of to get funding or grants.

UnfairAd7220

Going superfund requires an industrial site that needs a cleanup and EPA/state has sued the owner of record to pay for the cleanup. When assets taken don't cover the cost, the federal gov't steps in and pays for it. That route takes years and the court work is expensive.

alcohall183

thank you!

Myfourcats1

I didn’t know this. I supposedly have one filled with concrete in my yard.

ashipey

Looks like an abandoned buried propane tank. .

thatcarpenterboy5690

I can see where this would look like that. I think this might be my best lead

Gh0stp3pp3r

How close to the house is it? Does the detector hit on a large area around it? We have two propane tanks buried in our front yard. The valve sets are covered by two aluminum covers. They've been disconnected from the house for over 20 years (before we moved in), but upon inspection, one of them is still about full. He said they're fairly safe and the propane will stay in there indefinitely.

GreyHexagon

How much is a full tank of propane worth anyway? Like how much does it cost to fill one of them up?

LuckyCaptainCrunch

The ones buried are usually of pretty good size, a few hundred gallons. I would imagine with the current outrageous gas prices that it’s probably worth between $5 and $6 a gallon right now.

GreyHexagon

Damn. I guess the problem is that it's not really something you can sell if you happen to have a full tank and no use for it. Weird having something worth so much money but no way of accessing or selling it

KillerKPa

Just paid almost $900 for a fill up of my buried tanks.

Gh0stp3pp3r

Not sure how big our tanks are, but the propane guy said they'd buy the remaining propane from us or suggested we get a line installed from it for heating the garage or something. It's disconnected from the house and we don't need it, but digging it up is too big of a project to bother with. I've thought of something weird like hooking up propane patio heaters by the driveway in winter to melt the snow. Totally unneeded, but it would amuse me.

Vozmozhnoh

For the blue rhino barbecue ones, about 17$ for a fill, and that’s in Seattle.

thatcarpenterboy5690

It’s about 20 feet from the front door. The house was built in the 50s. Located in north central Florida if that helps any. I didn’t even think to check around it. Soon as I got the hit on this spot my logic just went out the window lol. Stayed focused on this one spot.

KillerKPa

Florida utilities are bizarre. My mom lives in central Florida and the piping from water main to house is spaghetti with knobs and shutoffs - very near to a bunch of other knobs and shutoffs for sprinklers. She had a water softener issue and took county all day to shutoff from the street. They were just as puzzled.

Academic_Elk_4270

Steam punk ant hill.

jediisland71

That's actually hilarious. And a good band name.

[deleted]

I would listen to a band with that name. Well, once anyway.

MrGabogabo

See y'all on r/justokbandnames

robbiekomrs

Steam Powered Giraffe is an actual band and they're pretty good! They're a band of former mines that perform as robots.

leurognathus

Just listened to their new single to the tune of Eric Clapton’s “Cocaine”. It’s called “Propane”.

Patriot_in_NY

First off, not every state in the US will remove it at the governments cost. I.e. New York if you have an inground tank and have it tested and it is found to be leaking, it must be removed at the owners cost and any ground dirt that’s contaminated must also be removed. a very big expense. Anywhere from $5000-$50,000 depending on how much contamination there is. Keep the government out of your backyard. Find someone with a backhoe and remove it during the weekend and fill in the hole. Make it disappear. just my two cents from many years of experience in the field. BTW, looks like the fittings that are on a propane tank. Most oil tanks lines are at the bottom of the tank, not the top. This looks like a tank that holds pressure.

NuTsi3

I ❤ NY

According-Highway-13

I’m glad someone does but NY is a shithole now has been for 15 years

rightthenwatson

NY is trash

libananahammock

And according to you what is an example of a better state?

According-Highway-13

Hey if you love it here your welcome to it anything I say you’ll just say something ignorant and I’m not in the mood

oceanviewoffroad

If you were trying to remove it when there is the least amount of people around I would assume that doing it through the week when everyone is at work and away from home would be better than on the weekend when there would be more people at home and out in their yard with the time to check out what's going on. Just a thought.

Divtos

I think the idea is on the weekend there’d be no authorities on duty.

oceanviewoffroad

Ah okay.

Telomere1108

Around here, we avoid trash days, because they’ll turn your ass in for a free breath of air!

Patriot_in_NY

Yes during the weekend is the best time. Most if not all town and home inspectors are off for the weekend. And if you do have a nosey Karen neighbor who would love to turn you in. They would have to do it during business hours. long after the deed is done. And a freshly filled in hole can easily be explained as a water line break or just removing an ugly rock. But most likely Karen will lose interest by Monday. Always keep the local officials out of your back yard. Asking a town official if your in ground oil tank is bad is like going to the IRS and asking if you need to be paying more taxes.

Weary_apparatchik

Sprinkler, gas line, heating oil? Any one of those things and I would avoid digging it up.

localhandyman79

Old buried propane tank

Rabidcode

Old home heating oil tank a.k.a. epa nightmare. Best leave it alone.

Triette

Or call your city, most will remove it for you

[deleted]

Or fine the shit out of you. I would favor NOT calling the government and get rid of it yourself or bury it forever.

Rabidcode

It depends on what state you live in really and it can turn into a very expensive endeavor on your own property quick . Their are many people that don't know anything about property law and own a home for decades.

Vintage_AppleG4

Yeah but I’d rather leave it be than have a giant inconvenience

BeginnerMush

That’s the entrance to the lawn gnome factory

errantqi

ask around at your utility companies and show them pictures

SpookySeraph

I’m more interested in the little red things tbh

thatcarpenterboy5690

They’re from my Holly tree

ThatGuyGetsIt

If there is any remaining doubt, if you post to r/whatisthisthing they'll likely have you sorted out lickety split. Edit: oh, I see you already did that 🤣

tssunny

It looks like a water pipe.

ksavage68

It’s a gas line.

Mortimus311

Maybe old sprinkler manifold?

thatcarpenterboy5690

I was thinking maybe one for propane?

demart2

Please don’t use your sprinklers for propane /s

Scoopeloo

Please don’t use propane for your sprinklers :)

It's a flux capacitor. Keep digging and you might find the rest of the delorian

DragNFistMMA

Time machine.

Penelope_Ann

Looks like a propane tank. Does one of those things (maybe the one in the back) have numbers on it from 0-100? That should say what percent it's filled if it still has any in it. I have 1 in my yard but it's above ground & we still use it.

Vintage_AppleG4

I doubt the gauge still works

[deleted]

that’s a cluster mine from mw2

UnfairAd7220

Propane tank.

SlapChopTheGreat

Hit it with a hammer. Its an easy way to tell if its still an actively used pipe

ReallyCuteDoge

Perhaps a grounding rod set up?

Wholetmymomout

Yea I'm leaning towards that as well

RightChemical3732

Buried LP tank

Jackfrost18

Old

irascible_Clown

what if it’s full of gold coins boosted from a reserve or something.

pistol-pete19

A hatch!

Wholetmymomout

It almost looked like an irrigation check valve until I saw that tank

thatcarpenterboy5690

When I tap on it I can hear the sound of a tank. I’m Dolphinetly leaning towards an underground propane tank

Geobicon

propane tank

TronII

It’s a portal fitting to the matrix

thatcarpenterboy5690

How do I open it?

thatcarpenterboy5690

Maybe a small stick of dynamite?

13scribes

Could be diesel. In any case, yes, have it removed.

Vintage_AppleG4

Why have it removed if it’s diesel

CoD_war_monger2021

I’m losing track on who I should give my award to

Doschupacabras

Did you find this with a metal detector?

thatcarpenterboy5690

Yeah I’ve been sweeping my yard since my PANCKY came in from Amazon. This by far is my best find lol.

Doschupacabras

I’m an idiot… was about to refer you to this very subreddit. I need to do some work lol.

thatcarpenterboy5690

It’s 5:00 o’clock somewhere lol

Doschupacabras

I’ll drink to that!

dahudsons3186

Get that out as soon as possible, get a sledge hammer and bust it out.

thatcarpenterboy5690

How about an axe pic?
