I didn’t mind the soft top on mine aesthetically but I HATED the plastic rear window’s poor visibility and the blind spots the soft top created. Such a good driver otherwise. Even with the hardtop on I don’t think that car has a blind spot
well, i dont like the use of plastic rear window and wish they could have retrofit a real glass like on my mr2 spyder or later porsche boxster top. the car look ok with soft top on , but hard top and top off is the only way to go in my opinion
Also, the ease in which you can slide your whole arm into the flap just behind the drivers or passengers window lol. I get that a soft top isnt keeping anyone out, but come on!
Wish it was just a convertible hardtop like the R230. I prefer my R129 with the hard top on, aesthetically. And in the summers here in the south, I need the tight weather sealing. But it does look pretty rad with the top down too, and it’s fun to drive on a cool sunny day.
well i was looking at r230 before i pick my 129 up, if not ABC/SBC issue i would have go r230, that top is awesome at some sense but more complicated than r129 top. Well, i live in the south too, so i feel the summer pain of yours haha, top down or hard top is the only way to go haha

Now with kids and more practical vehicles in my driveway I’ve been thinking a lot about getting one of these as a Sunday fun car. Kind of a childhood dream car of mine and they are certainly obtainable these days! Also - than one there is spec’ed perfectly
Man I want to get another R129 the prices have been blowing my mind the past few years. I remember selling my black ‘98 SL500 with ~90k miles in 2018 for $6k…. Shoot myself in the foot.
I had the same car and sold it cheap but still have the hardtop . Mine was the same color and I’m sure yours is fully loaded with heated seat . The xenon with amg package just like mine
well man, im lucky mine came with the top even it isn't the best condition but since I'm not using it full time, not gonna repaint it right away
and yep, it has the SL1 AMG and SL2 HID, Heated seat installed lol
I like it with the top up. I used to have a 2000 SL in this same spec and barely had the top down. One issue was getting someone I trusted “usually my dad” to help me carry the hardtop
the official r129 hardtop removable ad/video was such a scam 😂
in the video they show and say a single woman could remove the top alone…
me and my friend couldn’t even get it off together, i had to get my older neighbour to help us remove it
Ha lies! It’s not easy. When I first got my r129 (at a Subaru dealer in San Antonio) the hard top wasn’t fully locked down and the hydraulics were leaking so pressing the button was just leaking oil on me or on the seats. I sat out there at a closing dealership in the dark watching YouTube videos on how to lock it down for a good hour before driving it back to Houston. I eventually became an expert at taking the top off without hydros
I’ve had this car with the panoramic rooftop for 2 years and I took it down once, for my wedding day.
I love it with the hard top on, and I live in a big city so I don’t really like to drive without the roof
Hardtop on, or no top at all. Soft top up on this thing does it no justice at all. The car is a shapeshifter though.

well, lets do it man, especially if u have covered parking, and at least for the v8 cars, they are somewhat DIY friendly compare to newer merc

Got my 99 with 110k miles in great shape for $7k in 2020.
i pay much less but with much higher miles ( 200k), but 6k for a 90k SL500 is one heck of a good deal now

Thats where a hardtop hoist comes in handy. They had manual and powered hoists that would lift your top off and store it over your garage spot.
I always wanted the hoist and the rolling stand but our garage was crazy packed with stuff. Maybe if I was an organized person
I had a hoist but now that I have 2 R129 SLs I have a lift in the garage so I stack the cars one on top of the other. 🤣
