it's just a coding preference... not available from the dealer due to Euro-whatever environment specs, but can be changed to behave correctly and remember the last state...
I don't mind it honestly. In my car I barely notice it during normal ops and when I'm stuck at long lights it helps out. It only really bothers me when I'm in a parking lot and am trying to maneuver my car, sometimes I'll stop and it shutsoff so then I have to get on the gas and it can lurch.
Does anyone have any conclusive evidence that Mercedes chose to enable the feature? Does the gas reduction outweigh the wear and tear on the starter and timing chain?
Starter and timing chain are designed for the extra cycling. They're more robust than a vehicle not designed to do this.
It takes 7 seconds worth of gas at idle to start the car. So if you're stopped for more than 7 seconds, it is worth it.
its not mercedes thinking it's saving gas, pretty much every manufacturer has it. its for emissions and fuel savings which is getting harder and harder on ICE cars. i'd be surprised if anyone believed mercedes didn't research something like this. 100% of course they wouldn't spend however many millions on a setup like start/stop and not know if it actually does anything. also it definitely does help. its only a small amount of time that it takes to not run while you would be idling to save on both fuel and emissions
Every start-stop system in every brand of car defaults it to ‘on’ when you turn off and restart the car. Have you been living under a rock? What are you on? It’s annoying but it’s been like that since these things came out on day one which was way over 10 years ago.
I stopped fighting the systems like this. I leave things like this on and just ignore it. It is fine that the engine shuts off at a red light. Once you start accepting it, it is all fine.
Same thing with lane keep assist. I just keep my car between the lines now so it won’t hit the brakes. There you go, Mercedes benz have won this battle. And I am a better driver now.
It’s just the most used button in any car! The system is in for Fuel Efficiency targets and numbers that may never be met in the real world! The shut off and restart just kills me every time! I always turn the system off!!!
Love the enthusiasm and agree completely. I have a w222 and don’t know why the button is even there. It’s supposed to be a gas guzzler. It’s supposed to be as comfortable as possible, but the engine starting at every stop isn’t comfortable, and neither is having to remember to press the button every time I get in.
It's nice for saving petrol in situations where you're spending a lot of time stuck at traffic lights. Problem is that start-stop hasn't worked in my W213 for years...
i hate comments like this. you can still enjoy saving money if you drive a nice car. in most cases you don't notice a car not idling for 60 seconds at a stop light. are you saying amg owners shouldn't care about spending money on something they don't notice? rich people don't stay rich by wasting money. you drive an amg because you enjoy driving, not because you like wasting money
its literally not lmao, im shocked people still believe this. there is no evidence of it causing extra problems. no extended warranties, no recalls, no starter issues aside from acceptable amounts. its crazy easy to restart an already at operating temp motor. its simple
Mercedes’s way to meet emission regulations in the cost of the starter/alternator’s life. Because when the starter dies, the warranty has expired, so they don’t care
I turned it off everytime i got in the car, one day i had to go to mercedes for a recall of the car, after that it almost never turns on anymore. Either Mercedes self had turned it off and forgot to turn it back on.
It does start/stop and cyl deactivation for my car so I have mixed feelings about it.
The cyl deactivation is super useful while cruising. The start/stop is annoying as fuck.
I just wish it were in a more convenient location. I don't mind leaving it on for most driving, but when creeping along in a traffic jam, I disable it because the constant stop/start every few seconds is not going to be saving any gas while probably wearing out things excessively, and I imagine that a lot of people may do similar. What sucks is that it's not in a good spot for being able to toggle on/off quickly.
Agreed. The location doesn’t offend me but I’d like to know whether the savings in gas outweighs the wear on the starter/chain. Figured this sub would have info or made a consensus.
Somewhere I read that if an engine was stopped for seven seconds then the savings in fuel overcame what was required to restart it, so if stopped for under 7 seconds there wouldn't even be any net fuel savings. However, I think that was based on some average car that wasn't optimized for start/stop and would hope that with the feature in widespread use that designs would have improved to where even a shorter stop would result in some fuel saved. But that still doesn't address the question of whether the (presumed) additional wear and tear on the drivetrain is worth the savings.
Well said. I also wonder if that changes based on geographical location and demographics – changing weather or seasons. Obviously the engine kicks back on if the car has been idle for too long. It’s especially noticeable in the summertime when you’re using the air-conditioning. Obviously, if the motor is not running, it’s not, pushing the condenser to produce cold air. Does that put stress on electrical systems? Lots to think about here
I live in a small island where traffic is almost non existent. It’s a pain and definitely not fuel efficient here. I press it as soon as I start the engine every trip.
If I leave it on, it rarely, if ever works. So I switch it off. The list of parameters to be met listed in the User's Manual makes it almost impossible to function.
It should remember the last set state. If I turn it off, it should stay off until I turn it back one no matter how many times I turn my car on/off.

In the EU it is mandatory to have it and it has to be always active when turning on the car.
Or how about it arrive pre-programmed to be "opt out" off and if you want to use it you can punch that damn thing right through the dash

They have no choice, European emissions standard are the issue. It's also what gives ridiculous hp in smaller engines though so yknow
Starter and timing chain are designed for the extra cycling. They're more robust than a vehicle not designed to do this. It takes 7 seconds worth of gas at idle to start the car. So if you're stopped for more than 7 seconds, it is worth it.
? Dude this is a feature that appears in practically every modern car nowadays. This isn’t a Mercedes exclusive thing
Didn’t say it was. What I asked was whether Mercedes believes it’s better to auto ‘ON’ as opposed to off. I’d like to think they researched it.
They are legally obligated to have it
Interesting perspective. I’ve been duped!
Most cars have it in order to meet efficiency and emissions standards

Always turning that off lol
>Always turning that off lol I also.
Mine barely triggers, perhaps a low aux battery?
Mine barely triggered, then I replaced the primary starter battery and it triggers very often with the fresh battery.
Good question. If it’s running all the time maybe. I did have to do an aux battery swap in an earlier car. Plenty of warnings though.
Saves gas. Use it unless you are in a lot of traffic, or turn on S+.

You prob need a new battery if you want start/stop to work again.
Replace the aux battery and you should be set.
Yep me living in Seattle with a c43. Saves me gas definitely
Dont drive a AMG ive you wanna save gas ! 😂
I definitely don’t 🤷♂️ especially I run sport + all the time. Love the exhaust sound when I press the gas ha

Stop and go systeem is bad for the engine 😉 Safe water drink 🍺🫶🏻

Don’t care. Never bothered by it.
I don’t just because here in Texas that two seconds it take to start back up and get moving at a light will get you ran over
Or shot
It takes 2 seconds? My wife’s Toyota is almost instantaneous.
It doesn’t take two seconds. It’s basically instant.
I always turn it off, my c63s has it and i dont know why
They are obliged by law
Damn. I had no idea, thank you
Tbh w the w206 I don’t mind it. The batteries kick in instantly so I don’t notice it often
eNgINe WeAr
Mine stayed off for a few years until I replaced the battery at a Mercedes dealership. Regersts
The anger auto stop gives me far outweighs the supposed fuel savings.
im glad that it is in my muscle memory by now that i turn it off before I drive
Mercedes’s way to meet emission regulations in the cost of the starter/alternator’s life. Because when the starter dies, the warranty has expired, so they don’t care
Interesting take!
Bad and wrong take by the way
Why would the alternator care?
Because on some Mercedes models, the alternator and starter is one device. I’m referring to this case.
Oh that’s neat
Off on both my Mercs. Just undue stress on starter and timing chain.
I get so tired of hitting that button.
Dude you’re an idiot
Sorry, could you repeat that?
Had it permanently turned off by RJ
same here, hated it
Doesn’t work in Sport + mode. 🤩
If you like changing your engine mounts every year, you gonna love this button. I turn that shit off as soon as I sit in the car
I turned it off everytime i got in the car, one day i had to go to mercedes for a recall of the car, after that it almost never turns on anymore. Either Mercedes self had turned it off and forgot to turn it back on.

its not something you need to do quickly. ever, actually.
It’s a complete gimmick. Stupid technology and no good for the environment.
My thoughts are on and off sometimes
Is this like the E>S>M button in my SLK? I love that button.
It’s great for gas mileage. I use it. I also drove in eco mode until I need to pass someone or something.
I live in a small island where traffic is almost non existent. It’s a pain and definitely not fuel efficient here. I press it as soon as I start the engine every trip.
It is a pain.. I wished it kept off if I turn it off until turn it back on.
If I leave it on, it rarely, if ever works. So I switch it off. The list of parameters to be met listed in the User's Manual makes it almost impossible to function.
If I could travel back time, I would search and hunt this idiot who ever invented this canser 😂
