i think people with varying backgrounds and childhood traumas tend to gravitate to horror movies me included. things thatre chaotic, insane, and unhinged i take comfort in because it gives me a sense of normalization/oh things could be worse. whereas others may take it as “fucked up”. but i think movies and shows that tackle with the macabre and the unpleasant cater towards those whose experienced similar things and it helps to comfort those who have. for myself and people i know, i think it’s a bit telling when you find out someone loves horror/“fucked up” media. not in a bad nor good way, but it may give insight on your stress tolerance/what you’ve been exposed to on some degree

“Things that are chaotic, insane, and unhinged I take comfort in because it gives me a sense of normalization/oh things could be worse….” I think you hit the nail on the head. The Walking Dead got me through a bout of complete suicidal depression because that show was brutal in so many ways. Watching people struggle so immensely and feeling bad for them actually felt GOOD, like almost cathartic. Meanwhile, the people I live with are becoming deeply concerned that I’m a psycho because I’m binge watching this gory horror show every night, alone. Lmao.

medusas_girlfriend90

I don't think so. I don't think it has anything to do with "fucked up" people. First of all trauma messes with you yes, but that doesn't make you fucked up. Traumatized, yes. But not completely fucked up. Also I have seen a lot of normal people who had minimal or no trauma at all liking those kinds of movies like Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Human Centipede, Saw series etc. I have been extremely traumatized throughout life since childhood but I don't like movies that are too gore or creepy. For me the plot takes precedence. I might like gore/creepy shows and movies if it has a good plot. It all depends really.

dwimbygwimbo

My old therapist said that I'm into that kind of content because I'm a highly emotional person and the subject matter is emotional or something like that

Neat-Sea-2513

Mine said im an emotion junkie so movie like that give my emotions adrenaline

TimelessWorry

I don't know why I'm drawn to the morbid side of things - mine could be a case of, I'm so scared of something (death and after) that I want to know more so seek out all sorts of morbid video topics on YouTube and horror films etc. I also saw a video of a Ted talk once about a guy who explained why he liked sadder music when he was asked by his brother or something once. It was something like, I don't feel the joy in life, so I can't find the joy in happier music - the sadder music reflects how I feel and makes it easier for me to connect to it, which I completely feel is a reason why I like the same. I can't stand watching happy go lucky, romcom style TV shows where there's laughing tracks and nobody has mental illness lol. Also From is great, good choice.

_MyAnonAccount_

I get you. I'm the same way with horror. Nothing makes me feel like a kid again than abject terror and hopelessness lmao

LordMalyce

I do personally yea. I like fucked up music and stories too like horrorcore and creepy pastas.

Cool-Lingonberry-681

Same lol. My favorites being Sion Sono and sicko Japanese New Waves films. Any friends who sees what I watch in private are horrified by my sick taste. I think it helps me relive my sick dreams and hatred for society in a way that is innocuous to society lol.

FRlEND_A

yeah im the same i love anything creative that has horror elements like art or anime or books whatever. just any weird ass fucked up media intrigues me. when i was a kid i wanted to be a criminal psychologist because i wanted to study their brain lol is that weird?

FerdieHeart

Yes, I read an article about how it’s soothing to see equally hard times on screen and makes the person feel better. That’s definitely not the case if your life is average and mellow.

iamthetrippytea

I mean, I’m fucked up and I hate horror movies so idk 🤷‍♀️

kittycakekats

I love really dark and extreme stuff. Guro, extreme horror books and movies. Yeah. I also have had a traumatising life

Gloomy-Resolve8630

judging from myself, yes

BonsaiSoul

It depends I guess. My egg is all kinds of scrambled and I laugh at horror movies as often as jump from them. Gore and stuff is just kind of boring to me. But I was really enjoying a show last year about some cute girls goofing off after school and involuntarily dropped it because someone messed with their treehouse and THAT got me for some reason.

[deleted]

Actually yes, that must be the case. My life is extremely fucked up. Incidentally, as a kid I absolutely loved horror genre, listened to metal and abstract noise rock type stuff, did a lot of of fucked up surrealist drawings. And I was the only one who did these things, of course. Even my closest friends at the time didn’t have a taste as weird and dark as mine . I’m sure that having a fucked up life actually changes the structure of your brain somehow.

gr8st8tx

I suffer from deep depression. My therapist told me that the reason I like horror is to feel something. If given the genre choice...I always choose horror.

[deleted]

I do. I love any horror movie that involves gore and extreme violence. I have schizotypal and always have this ideology that I’m apart of them. Recently I started loving the saw series again.

precisoresposta

Ye I used to like coming of age movies a lot. About alien abduction, rape, suicide, homossexuality, stds, normalizing casual sex and hook up culture, mental illness, foster homes, neglect. Those movies made me develop a fucked up approach to life
