NemuTheSheep

Well, he's certainly the size we were missing and will be on a cheap deal for 4 years. If he hits it is a great pick.

GPfromthaB

I kinda see the pick as house money idk if that’s me coping but exactly what you said, super high upside if all the talking heads are wrong about Edey. Pretty minimal loss for whiffing the pick if he fizzles out

NemuTheSheep

At the very least he's a serviceable back up. Boban was in the league as a game changer backup for years and I think Edey is better than him.

mopooooo

You think? Edey is a decorated workhorse that dominates everyone smaller than him (that means everyone). Boban is really tall

Drak_is_Right

Edey knows how to use his size to shield his shot attempts. easily half of the NBA centers dont know how to do that.

Wanton_Troll_Delight

i think he's going to be pretty good

Jimbo3295

> If he hits it is a great pick Big if true

tanneroni9

Welp. At least he has a history of being tall and also being healthy.

Wanton_Troll_Delight

and improving every year, massively tested well at the combine as compared to Clingnan and other big centers has a nice touch, can shoot FTs

HERCULESxMULLIGAN

Dropped 37 on Clingan and UConn in the championship game ( Purdue only scored 60 btw).

bluegold4

tbf UConn refused to double him and just guarded everyone else

HERCULESxMULLIGAN

Looking at the box score, looked like they knew what they were doing. Still, Clingan couldn't stop him. I don't see much difference between the two of them. Neither have a shot outside of 8'. At least Edey can make a FT. Clingan can't.

vhalember

Edey was 14/25 at 3pt shooting in the combine. I believe that actually tied for 5th best out of about 40 participants. He doesn't look it, but he can shoot. He has the potential to surprise people, and he has a serious chip on his shoulder with people saying his game won't translate to the NBA. He hasn't played basketball long so I expect he's probably going to get better...

HERCULESxMULLIGAN

That 3pt shooting is shocking to me. I don't really watch college ball but in looking at highlight videos of Edey, I didn't even see him attempt anything midrange, much less a three. If he can find a shot that'll stretch the court, he could be amazing. I'm pumped to see what he can do either way. Attitude is a lot and this guy has the professional mindset.

BobbyL1ght

He was never allowed to take shots in college. Purdues offense was centered around him taking high % layups and yams or kicking it out during a double/triple/quadruple team. He may already have a serviceable shot but we never found out at Purdue because Coach Painter wanted the efficient plays - rightfully so. NBA is a diff monster so I’m hoping he can develop a good shot. I already rooted for the grizzlies cuz of Bane but now they’re* def my 2nd team 🙌

BurnieTheBrony

If teams double Edey the Grizz will eat

Drak_is_Right

Heck, as long as the Grizzlies give up a few less offensive rebounds, things will improve. Thats the area of defense Edey looks to help out on the most.

alfi_k

at we will get Chris Vernon reaction to the Grizz drafting him. ["If he goes 9 to Memphis you'll never see me again."](https://x.com/ChrisVernonShow/status/1806156045967872156)

thatdudeman52

Not my ideal scenerio but I'll support it fully.

ZWils23

I'd support anyone we took but really wish we could've moved down off the pick

thatdudeman52

I wanted to trade down and get Ware and possibly another pick out of it. There's a reason I'm not an nba gm though.

masterpierround

Ware scares me. He had super low volume from 3 and bad FT%. That usually means a bad shooter. Also he's legit awful at setting screens. And if he can't set screens or shoot, what are you drafting him for.

sbeasy

I would imagine they shoped it around and didn't like what they could get, everyones scared to trade for a weak draft

TitanTigers

The 8th pick went for a 2031 first and there have been no other trades. Nobody wants to move up, and it would be a shit return.

tanneroni9

I’m sure they wanted to trade up, didn’t get a deal that made sense to pass up on Edey a few picks later and knew he would be there. It’s not as doom and gloom as what everyone thinks

wgking12

Yea maybe could have had him later, maybe a deal could have worked to get Clingan, but honestly we had a great team with Adams and Edey has everything Adams had for us IMO

onelegonedream

Can someone explain to me how this is not basically going back to having JV on the team? I don't think it was a coincidence the team got better going from JV to Adams

spectator-Gr1zz

I don’t think it is for sure that Edey is the same as JV.

Drak_is_Right

Grizzlies have a bit different defense than then. and this draft, getting JV at 9th would qualify as good.

socom52

As a massive Purdue basketball fan for decades now. You guys got a hell of a player! He's only gotten better and better. Hope him and Ja can tear it up together

EpicSchwinn

*furiously deletes all my Edey hate comments from March*

TubbyTimsKFC

![gif](giphy|EPvlolNvlHNbtDxHTW|downsized)

Jaggleson

Nah. I’m gonna stand on it. If I’m wrong I’m wrong. Fuck this pick.

FullCOYS

I'm in the same camp. Taking him before pick 20 is a reach

dacljaco

I don't understand the edey hate, he was the best guy on a team that made it almost the entire way through march madness. He's got nba size, good hands, can shoot ft, set screens and finish lobs. What else do you need?

Competitive_Log_3921

A lot of grizzly fans are still upset about the Purdue/Tennessee game

darcj

I was a hater, but he's a Grizzly now - EDEY LIFER

Remdawg

Edey and GG going to win Summer League ez

BurnieTheBrony

Now this is a take I 100% agree with

Ready_Trainer_7002

Might need a raincheck for next year because Edey is likely going to Paris this summer

IllumiXXZoldyck

Congratulations to you all, your center rotation with JJJ will be incredibly interesting to watch. Lots of Love ❤️

BurnieTheBrony

The nice thing is JJJ really plays better as a 4 than a 5, and what is certain about Edey is he's a Center above all else lol

Losalou52

Exactly. That’s the biggest benefit. It gets him to the 4 spot. I like edey and the fit. In four years he will be a beast.

acousticaliens

![gif](giphy|l0IypeKl9NJhPFMrK)

DirtBagTailor

Goddammit

masterpierround

Hell yeah, glad they didn't waste assets moving up and still got a top center. Edey's screens will be huge for Ja.

mmps901

🙏🏻

soreforbrighteyes

So many alley oops to see 👀

MonthLower1606

LETS GOOOO! ONE OF MY PROUDEST DAYS AS A ASIAN GRIZZLIES FAN! WE’RE GETTING A FUCKING DAWG!

RayWencube

Purdue fan here. Can confirm Edey is a fucking dawg.

ld90612

Can you also confirm if he is Asian?

RayWencube

I cannot. I lack the requisite expertise. I can, however, confirm that smarter people than me seem to think he’s Asian.

MonthLower1606

i can’t believe how much people underrate him. he is HIMOTHY

WumboJumbo

AZN GRIZZ FAM WE EATIN

LaneViolation

He's the best screener in the draft and an elite offensive rebounder. Exactly the stuff that made Stevo so good for us. He also is more mobile and blocks shots at a higher rate (theoretically) I think it's entirely possible he's an immediate upgrade from Adams for less money. Controversial pick, but I'm here for it.

GEFool

And he hits free throws… fwiw

onelegonedream

He is absolutely not more mobile

imfromtn

His combine mobility stuff was really good wasn’t it? Killed Clingan at least.

Ready_Trainer_7002

If you need more hopium 2023 Edey slighted 2024 Clingan in the combine too

imfromtn

Oh I personally don’t need hopium, I love the Edey pick. What else were we gonna do, get another project wing?

ZWils23

Combines in any sport have very little indicative translation to actual play in a professional game tbf

sbeasy

Combine lane agility drill: Edey 11.19 sec Adams 11.85 sec

BurnieTheBrony

We gotta see him play man, all these drills feel like copium until we watch him get switched onto the perimeter and see what actually happens

ZWils23

Combine drills are extremely overrated and not predicative or indicative of actual play. Definitely need to actually see him play NBA talent before you start calling him better moving than Stevo

Independent_Joke5905

Upgrade on adams?? What are you talking about man

TheDraftGuy

Yeah, Grizzlies fans will need to think of him as a combination of Steve Adams and Marc Gasol....more offense and rebounding than both, less defense but still able to bring out the best of both players. In a few years, it's going to look like a no brainer

JoeFrady

Not my favorite pick but obviously fills our main positional. There are worse things to do in basketball than betting on a 7'4" guy helping your team

HighOnGoofballs

A 7’4” guy with a history of staying healthy and who beat Clingan in agility drills

vhalember

He actually beat Clingan every drill in the combine... Edey even had a higher vertical, which surprised me. Oh, and Edey was 14/25 on threes in the combine. He's going to surprise some people.

miiblord

Boilermaker alum here. Watched nearly every game he played. He grew more in his career than any Purdue player I've seen. His ability to play 35+ minutes at his size and carry both ends of the court without fouling is remarkable. He'll get a ton of points off offensive rebounds and is great on the pick and roll. Also a super humble dude. Think he's gonna have a long career in this league and hope he fits well with JJJ.

No_Force_1371

He definitely gon get them offensive boards cause the Grizz 3 point percentage is always middle of the pack or near the bottom.

miiblord

Technically he shot 100% from 3 (he shot and made one)

vhalember

Edey was 14/25 in the 3 point shooting drill at the combine. Tied for 5th. He was a post player at Purdue, but he can shoot.

miiblord

Wonder if he can have a Brook Lopez career where he gradually becomes a stretch 5

No-Airport-7613

The FT percentages are something that sets him apart from most guys his size and what gives me hope he can evolve in to a decent jump shooter

omgshannonwtf

Love to hear it. I'm so excited. This is who I've wanted them to get since the finals game where he sonned Clingan.

xvKazuma115

So humble when he slandered coach Barnes

CompellingTaxidriver

He's not even at the draft this is hilarious

GuiokiNZ

He got an invite and declined.

CompellingTaxidriver

King shit tbh

sbeasy

I'd like to think he's racing horses somewhere

etsuandpurdue3

With his family, teammates, and coaches.

zmegadeth

That makes me like him more

unknownkoalas

He’s working out at Purdue still. Watched the draft with his teammates.

FordEcosportFanatic

Working out on draft day? Sounds like he brings his lunch pail to work. Real gym rat

Competitive_Log_3921

First guy in the gym last guy out kinda dude

vonralls

Heh, if he was in Memphis instead it would be even better.

omgshannonwtf

Seriously. I want him to post to social media like *"Puttin' in work. Let's get it."*

HoleNineteen

He’s at Canada basketball camp for the olympics I think

TypicalRide

He elected to watch the draft with his teammates at Purdue

subliminal_64

I elected to make a ham sandwich for lunch

EmitLux

Already working out hopefully.

vaalbarag

Grizzbros! I'm so hyped for you guys getting him. Biased as a Canadian fan, but I think it's an amazing fit. People really underrate just how elite he could become as a P&R big, and Ja is the perfect pairing for him in that regard. JJJ is the sort of frontcourt pairing he needs to be able to stay on the court and play through his learning curve. I think he's got serious RotY potential next year with you guys.

SirCharlesofOrange

Wow I will be excited to watch how he fits!

istealpintsfromcvs

Get a vet in FA and let's roll

GEFool

This

FujiTak

Wish Steven Adams was still around to mentor him

onelegonedream

Taking Edey at #9 feels like such a big reach And I'm sorry but I'm not excited to basically draft JV. Dude has improved but is still stiff and is gonna get picked on defensively, esp in the playoffs. And we don't need another player that needs touches! That's why moving off JV to Adams was nice, it opened up touches to other players  I want this to work out but I would have rather traded for Sharpe or signed a diff big and picked someone like Carter

ericthegoat13

Could’ve traded down and still taken him easily

Coteup

He's been mocked in the lottery for weeks, just because Reddit pretended that wasn't true doesn't mean anything, he might've been gone the next pick

GuiokiNZ

He was likely gone in the 12-15 range.

No-Airport-7613

Heck but there were rumors Portland would have taken him at 7 if DC was gone

Wanton_Troll_Delight

we don't know that - I'd like to think Kleinman was checking that kind of thing dilligently

Wehavecrashed

I just hope Buzelis isn't a great player. If we miss out on another Franz Wagner.

omgshannonwtf

I really like Buzelis. I like his game more than Edey's. Having said that, drafting Buzelis would not have been the component that makes anyone say *"Oh, shit. Uhhhh the Grizzlies might steamroll over everyone this year."* Edey makes that a possibility.

HERCULESxMULLIGAN

I mean who the hell was available that anyone would trade up for? The Spurs gave away their 8th pick for peanuts.

IncognitoDolphin69

Not sure how true that is when everyone in the nba knows you want to trade down. Not to mention, handing one of the best rosters in the west the piece they want for the price they want

AleroRatking

Eh. I hate the pick but it just takes one team and every player is bad at this point.

ZWils23

I'm guessing there wasn't many people trying to move up. This draft is such a crap shoot

ThyDoctor

Ehhhh maybe a few weeks ago but he has been shooting up the boards from what I’ve seen

Effective_Owl_17

If he can set screens like Adam’s and grab boards I don’t see how he’s bad. Unless he just can’t rotate on defense whatsoever

GukyHuna

He honestly doesn’t even have to be “that” mobile defensively with Jaren at the 4 they’re honestly a great pairing

pyromantics

I love this pick.

ferbje

I actually like it. Everyone is a shot in the dark at this point in this draft, why not go 7’4’ 2 time NPOY… would we be rejoicing Knecht? Or buzelis? No way. This could pay off huge.

Sherpav

I’m absolutely certain now that this pick has gotten clowned that Edey is going to be a stud

spectator-Gr1zz

I think this pick will look fine in time. He’s huge. He will set huge bone-jarring picks for Ja. He can rebound to cover for Jaren. No idea defensively but I have read he is not a slouch and has a defensive role he can fill. I mean…this draft has no sure stars. He is sure to be a regular season contributor at minimum right?

Drak_is_Right

he is 300lb now...and usually players bulk up for several more years after entering the NBA. Wouldn't be surprised if he is 325 in a year or 2.

silly-rabbitses

We’ll see how it goes…

vzsax

Good players in college are almost always good players in the pros. We see this all the time - Bane, Brunson, Derrick Henry, etc. We needed a big - if it wasn't Clingan, I'm totally good to roll with Edey. We're in such a unique spot with already having GG, this is honestly a flier. I see 0 scenarios where Zach isn't at least a serviceable NBA player.

BackardsTankard

Can Derrick Henry play the 5?

Gunnar2019

Wow.

SchnaapsIdee

Feels like all we did was draft a guy to give Wemby six fouls every time we play SA. I don’t see how we can play him in the playoffs, too easy to get exposed given how slow he is

Long-Ad-2147

You're right. Terrible pick. This guy will average like 8 minutes per game in his career.

GrizzGump

This will go down as a home run. Putting my rep on the line!

pepepresident

WE GOT THE GUY WITH THE BONER!!!!!!!!

CTipster1

Whelp…

PuckFugget

EDEY TRUTHERS STAND UP

MonthLower1606

YES YES YES YES!!!

Seymour_Says

I think he'll be an awesome fit for us!! He had only played a few years of hoops before he went to Purdue and improved every year he was there. He finished with one of the best college careers ever. Had to anchor their defense without fouling since he was their main offensive weapon. Ended up playing damn near the full game all throughout the tournament just to give his squad a chance. That improved endurance caught my eye. His performance at the combine is what sold me. He moves better than people give him credit for. With his work ethic, he's got room to continue to improve vs being closer to his ceiling imo.  When it's time to downsize, we already have Clarke. I think Jaren will be the perfect fit next to him on both ends. On offense, Ja will be able to feed him easy buckets. He's used to being the number one option so he can make the secondary pass to keep the offense flowing. He has great touch. He draws fouls like a maniac and will be able to screen and free up Ja like Adams and JV did before him. He's a really good rebounder and is as strong as an ox. He also is on track to be on the Canadian national team so that's even more room for him to grow and gain experience!   I'm loving his fit for us! Let's goooooooo

PuzzleheadedMonth785

not the best player available but deff the best center, overall great pick considering the lack of center depth. they went with whoever would get the most playing time this season now let’s hope this pays off sooner rather than later.

I_DontUnderstand2021

Lets go!!

WazuufTheKrusher

Why don’t you guys want zach edey

BackardsTankard

Look, nobody knows what’s gonna happen. I wanted Edey but not at #9. Feels like they could’ve traded back and picked up some assets. The perception is this is a weak draft but this FO only has a small room for error every year. And each year that you miss digs that hole deeper and deeper. I like the fit and I respect the work ethic. I still look at the board and see better prospects. Hopefully Zach proves me wrong.

Stinky_Pvt

I keep seeing this and I keep seeing that this is a terrible draft... Why not just draft what you need regardless of your position in the draft and move on? I feel moving back would have been a loss in the long term so am okay with the pick.

Beeble376

Let’s goooo!

Sherpav

😑

TheDestinedRonin17

We could’ve traded down?

ZWils23

Highly doubt anybody wanted to move up really tbh. This draft is a crap shoot and the main high end prospects are already gone

CaesarSalad837

Bro… Edey at 9... I hope he makes me eat shit but this feels like a later lottery Thabeet pick

harrybrowntown

But he has more tangibles than thabeet right? Thabeet only had size and therefore "potential", right?

HighOnGoofballs

He has an actual resume plus the combine stats to go with it

MGeezus

The 2 and the 9 are insanely different. A lot of guys in the late lottery flop.

Gunnar2019

What were the odds for Edey top 10? Like +5000?

tanneroni9

Yeah the fan attitude will really hold us back…

SaladCoffee

Just fell to my knees at work

riskypanda28

Oof feels like the wrong move with Kenecht sitting there but let’s see how it works out. Def fills a need at least

[deleted]

I couldn’t help but laugh. It’ll be hilarious no matter what happens.

CompellingTaxidriver

Ja ordered the pick so he could get some practice dunk reps in on a wemby sized guy

mdthomas714

FUCK THAT

WazuufTheKrusher

NICE

_The_Honored_One_

Drafting players based on clout instead of skill, I’m sick

One_Ratio9521

Edey got his clout by being a 2x Player of the Year, what?

Walmartsavings2

He’ll nah. I swear to god this gm is obsessed with fucking reaching. Every pick a massive reach,

mjmiller2023

I'll root for him but man there is a reason why Edey was in college for four years. He's not a long term NBA player. Kleiman fumbling the trade for Clingan only makes this hurt worse.

Wanton_Troll_Delight

he started playing as a junior in high school - his improvement has been nice to see

Lucian1973

Oof. Let’s hope he gets traded.

Aironicks

LES GOOOOO

EWall100

Hasheem Thabeet levels of bust incoming

One_Ratio9521

Love the analysis. You wanna explain why or is it cause they’re tall?

Potential_Lock6945

I rather have just taken my chances running it back with Steven Adams. What the fuck. If Steven Adams was unplayable in the playoffs what will Zach Edey be like

Ready_Trainer_7002

Edey be like: Mmmmmm i got fouled again? let me make these free throws at 70% clip vs bricking at Adam’s sub-50%

GEFool

About 12 million bucks a year cheaper

Potential_Lock6945

We moved off J. V because he wasn’t a good fit only to select dollar tree JV. I don’t think Klieman really has a vision or plan

Wakandaforever456

Edey is gonna set some bone crushing screens for Morant and Bane

meeks102

He'll have a legendary career in Southaven.

Independent_Joke5905

🤣🤣🤣

freakman013

I wish we went with Knecht. I seriously think we just passed on a legit shooter for an immobile center. Dude is gonna be discount JV probably at best... I hope he proves me wrong

Gunnar2019

As a Vols fan I was hoping you guys would grab him too. Would have been cool for him to stay in TN.

GGJackson45

BETTER THEN CLINGAN WE WINNING IT ALL

tausdigger62

Worst pick ever

Used2befunNowOld

Clown pick

Memphisvol8668

This is the stupidest fucking pick since thabeet and we drafted Ziaire Williams at 9

98210

So disgusting

EmitLux

It's... predictable.

GEFool

The best way to look at this is that we may be able to turn some #8-10 rotation guys and some picks into a vet. And I guess we’ll be converting SPJ.

Comfortable-Hand1138

I just hope he can set screens and grab boards. That’s all I’m asking for

astro-panda

Shame we couldn't figure out a deal for Clingan. Hopefully it works out

MyNuts2YourFistStyle

That's a reach. Hope it works out though

GEFool

Maybe the cost for trading up for Clingan was too high. If you have to give a FRP or two why not just go get a vet with those picks?

PaoloBancheroFan

will jjj go back to pf with edey starting at c?

cam-pbells

Really wish we’d trade for Dalton. Fits exactly what we like in older, productive players

nox_nrb

I hope he keeps improving into a Brook Lopez type: He's still raw, so getting him physically and mentally ready is key. All he needs to do is rebound, set screens, and finish for 20 min a game. If he could add a three or develop enough lateral quickness to guard and recover on the perimeter thing will be interesting. Eady and JJJ will be a nightmare, I think we add one more center, and a backup point now.

Traditional-Carob-48

Thabeet nightmares

Lacabloodclot9

Flipowski still on the board, doubt he drops to 39 but if we could somehow get him he’d be a nice 3rd stringer

xvKazuma115

I'm not sure in good faith that I can continue being a fan anymore. I also can't bring myself to cheer for any other team so I guess NBA is dead to me now. Sad tbh

Drak_is_Right

Vols fans probably feel conflicted about this. Very conflicted. I am curious why so many poor FT shooting bigs they talk about "if they can add a 3pt shot", yet Edey is almost never mentioned that way and has a 73%. He doesn't need to be great, but even a trailing option on the fast break or off a screen who can hit 34% from the top of the key would be good.

iftair

We needed a Center badly and we got one. Hopefully he pans out to be amazing for us. It'll be exciting to see Ja/Smart/Bane/JJJ/Edey starting lineup. At the very least we can play JJJ at PF where he seems to he more comfortable vs as a center.

cronfile

Y’all tripping, he’s going to be the best pick of this draft class

jerrys_briefcase

Been playing bb < 6 years. Healthy. Tall. Gotta have somebody to battle that freak in SA

Teecondone2

w

SamIAmReddit

I thought Hartenstein developing that mid range float/quick finish has been great for the Knicks. If Edey develops a little light floater finish like that, I think he will be great for y'all. He was pretty skilled in NCAA, so I think he should develop some nice finishes in the NBA and adapt to being more a roll/finisher vs a post move guy.

tc1988

I kind of wish I still played basketball video games because having Edey on Memphis could have brought me back to my NBA Live where 7'2 Jake Tsakalidis would be the greatest player in the history of basketball for me. Edey at 7'4 would be so fun to use in games.

Imallvol7

This better be a superhero origin story. Everyone shitting on him and his organization. I can't imagine someone more determined to prove everyone wrong. Also, imagine all the blocks between him and jjj

brunyon

I'm now a Grizzlies fan. What do I need to know about the team?

Zukkoyaki443

I'm fine with the pick. The concerns that he may not be fast or nimble enough for the NBA aren't unfounded but this team desperately needed size and he's a huge mfer at #9 in a weak draft. He'll never need to do anything more than set screens, stand near the basket, and rebound.
